If you weren’t already starting to have concerns about this Philadelphia Phillies team, you may want to start soon. Yes, it’s still early and there is a lot of baseball to be played, but this bullpen is just not up to where it was when they won the National League the past two seasons.
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com tweets that setup man Ryan Madson will miss a minimum of eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his big toe.
But accidents happen, right? Nope, not in this case. Madson busted the toe when he kicked a chair in frustration after another poor outing.
“I went downstairs to cool off and I slipped on the way down and that just set me off,” Madson said. “There was a chair at the end of the stairs and I tried to kick it over and I caught my toe underneath the chair instead of on top.
“I’m frustrated. I’m embarrassed,” said Madson. “I let down my teammates and the fans that want us to all be out there and playing hard for them. I feel terrible about that. It’s the worst part.”
The Phils desperately need Brad Lidge to return to form. If not, this is going to be a very, very frustrating season. The back end of the bullpen isn’t settled and neither is the middle. Throw in some shaky starts from the likes of Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer and you have a recipe for disaster.
Paulman predicted that this season would be a struggle back in Febuary. They will finish in 2nd place
in the NL East and struggle to make a Wild Card spot and then go down quietly in the playoffs
I like some of the additions on this team byut hate the make-up of the bullpen (and I have since Febuary)
and too many other teams have improved in the NL like the Braves,Cardinals,Reds,SF Giants to name
a few…
Madson should be donate his Salary for the next 8 weeks to some local Charities
for kicking a chair and breaking his toe… (for being stupid if nothing else)
