This Eagles Offense Is Obviously Going To Be The Greatest Of All-Time

Get your plane and hotel reservations completed, then get ahold of as many Super Bowl tickets as you can get.  The young Eagles offense is going to rip up the entire NFL like nobody has ever seen.

I can’t wait until the Eagles offense gets on the field this fall.¬† After listening to and reading about what they’re going to do when the season starts, this is going to be the best offense in the National Football League.

Paul Domowitch writes an article on Philly.com about how the Eagles wide receivers are going to benefit from the change to Kevin Kolb from Donovan McNabb. It’s going to benefit them so much that they’re going to be up near the top of the league in YAC, “Yards After the Catch”.

Understand that with the McNabb at the helm, they were eighth in the league in YAC.

I agree with them that Kolb’s accuracy in getting the ball to them on the run could help them, but he’s got to get in there and do it before I am convinced.¬† Quarterbacking involves more than accuracy.¬† It involves reading the defense, avoiding the pass rush, and throwing the ball to the right receiver. I would advise all these young Eagles to slow down with all the talk and just let it happen.

“The yards after the catch are going to be a big part of our offense,” Kolb told Domowitch after the mini camp. “I know this group [of receivers] will make the plays if I give them the chance to do so.”

It’s as if they haven’t had the chance to do it yet.¬† Remember that DeSean Jackson was in the Pro Bowl this past season.¬† He was 10th among wide receivers in YAC.

“Because of how accurate he is, we’re going to be able to catch the ball in stride and do something with it,” said second-year wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. “Now that he’s behind the center, I definitely think there are going to be more opportunities for those types of [YAC] things.”

This has to mean that Maclin along with Jackson will be in the Pro Bowl after the season.¬† Aren’t they putting the cart before the horse?¬† They’re talking more than the Saints and Colts who were in the Super Bowl earlier this year.

Eagles tight end Brent Celek was ranked behind only two tight ends, Antonio Gates and Jason Witten in the league in YAC, yet he says there’s going to be a big difference when Kolb gets behind center.

“Kevin’s accuracy is going to be the biggest factor [for more yards after the catch],” Celek said. “If you get it there accurately, the guy can catch it and turn upfield. If it’s not [accurate], you’ve got to turn your body and it slows you down and the defense can catch up quicker. Getting the ball out fast and getting it to you in a position where you can cut up the field quickly is what it’s all about.”

Look, I am impressed by the talent the Eagles have put together in this group of weapons, but I would encourage them to keep this to themselves and go out and do it when the season starts.

All of the talk is raising the expectation to a point where anything less than greatness is going to be a letdown.

If they keep their expectations and goals to themselves then go out and tear up the defenses in the league this fall, everybody will see and acknowledge it.¬† What they say now isn’t going to help them.¬†¬† So why all the talk.

Personally, I think this shows what the offensive weapons see in a young QB. I think this speaks volumes on the talent they believe Kolb has.

I love it that they are so confident. You know that famous quote, “Confidence breeds success.”

Well that didn’t just come from no where. I believe it does, and I would rather have every single one of these guys believe they can win a Super Bowl and believe they are the best in the league. Screw the Saints, or Colts or the other teams in the league, who cares what they say or do or believe. This team needs to believe that it is a winner, and right now it isn’t disappointing. This confidence WILL translate to the field.

5 Keys for Eagles for Succesful 2010 Season Offensivley

#1) Obviously the play and maturation of QB Kolb
#2) The play of G Stacey Adrews, if 100% and productive, then a big boost to the O/Line
#3) The continued maturation and play of RB McCoy and WR Maclin as they start their 2nd season
#4) The play of TE’s C Ingram and draft pick C Harbor… Do they play and contribute in 2010
#5) Utilzing QB M Vick more and allow him to make some plays
#6) Overall play-calling by AR and MM to strive for a more balanced, and unpredictable attack

garry, your boy is in DC. Give it a rest.

Paulman, Stacey Andrews? What about the Left Tackle who played poorly in some key games. THis is why people like me deride the nonsense you write. You like to read yourself on a website.

How about a 2011 mock draft for us? I hear it is heavy with good corners.

The young guys are supposed talk up Kolb and say all the right things. From the amount of talking they’re doing, they really seem to believe it and are anxious to get on the field. I think they should pull a Paterno and say “We have a lot of work to do and hope things work out this year.”

McNabb talked up his other recievers when TO went down the Super Bowl year. That was the correct thing to do. TO took it as a slap in the face and went psycho. McNabb seems to be the guy overreacting this time around. He’s not here and the current players have to rally around each other. He should be the wise veteran and let the games play out.

I’m happy to see Kolb starting and willing to see if Kolb can make the team go. There are no gurantees and it’s time to let Kolb drive. Kolb has been running this type of offense since he was 14 years old. It’s obviously much more complex at this level, but it’s what he knows.

G, I think it is good to point out that the young Eagles avoid overconfidence, but I don’t know if they have yet reached a level that is unhelpful. I don’t think any of the quotes that you have cited are examples of guys putting some benchmark or concrete expectation (i.e. winning the super bowl or being the number one offense) on what they are going to achieve in 2010. I think that most of the comments are for the sake of showing their serious support for Kolb and that they are not planning on taking a step back this season. That is exactly what I want to hear from them. Go Eagles!

This offense has the tools to be big time, but you have to do it on the field and not in the papers. All these weapons won’t mean a thing if KK is running for his life so the offensive line starting with whoever the center is better be just as good as the young guns. Please folks I don’t want to hear how fast KK will get rid of the ball you still need to time to read the defense and get it to the right receiver.

To Reid above,
Jason Peters at LT is fine and will have a better season in 2010,
Did he perform as expected out of the gate, absolutely not, did he improve as the season went on,
yes he did, his conditioning is critical at the start of camp this year and will tell me how serious he is about being a Dominant LT, as he as the talent to be… ( I expect a legitimate Pro-Bowl type of year from him in 2010) Stacey Andrews is the wildcard among the OL where RG has Andrews,Cole,Jean-Gilles all playing at one time or another…If he underperfoms or isn’t heatlhy, then the depth along the O/Line is very thin…
It’s also funny you mention a 2011 Mock Draft, I am working on it and should have done by Friday
My 1st prediction is the Eagles will trade down and out of 1st and 2nd Rounds and accumulate
11 picks in Rounds 5 & 6 & 7…

i think a lot of these quotes are non-sense to begin with. a member of the media is fishing for stories right now and all these guys are saying have to do with displaying confidence in their current roster. nothing more nothing less. it is a fact Kolb is more accurate and does not have as strong of an arm as mcnabb, which will translate into a shorter more precise passing attack. no slight against mcnabb and nothing more than displaying confidence in kolb. this is a non story by a member of the media trying to dig up some garbage to keep a job. Paulman i agree with you about peters, sub par season for a player of his capability, should be able to expect more from him and a lot of question marks on the oline are pointing toward stacy andrews.

I just want them all to shut up and play. Period. Does anybody really need them to express “confidence”. No. We need them to play. They aren’t doing any good by talking. All they are doing is talking about how good they are going to be and then look like fools if it doesn’t. In front of the media and fans, just play it safe. Behind closed doors talk about how good you are going to be. We will see how good they will be when Mike Jenkins is jamming Jackson out of bounds and Ware and Spencer are chasing Kolb around. Other teams read these quotes and say “wait til we play them, we got something for them”. They the young guns are going to go out there with no bullets because they will play a team that can play defense. Just be quiet. No need to raise the bar any higher than it is since they’re not rebuilding. Or so they say. Just keep your mouths shut and play ball. NONE OF THEM ARE IN ANY POSITION TO DO ANY TALKING. THEY ALL STILL HAVE TO PROVE THEMSELVES. Maclin will have to prove he will take a step up, Celek will have to continue to prove if he’s one of the best TEs in the league and Desean will have to prove that he’s not a one trick pony and can do other things besides the deep ball and punt returns.

I didn’t say J Peters is a dominant LT right now, but I think he can be if he comes to camp in shape
and has a full camp of practicing with the rest of the OL and of course new reps w/QB Kolb,
Remeber he startied off slow last season, missed some camp time, wasn’t in the best of condition and
also had no LG T Herremans for the first few weeks..
The new strength and conditioning coach is getting these guys strongler and more explosive from all reports which should play well with the O/Line.. .

The one thing I don’t like about this team is that we don’t have a heathly mix of veteran leadership. We spend all last year talking about leadership when Dawk left and so on and so on but all of a sudden it’s irrelevant. The vets we do have on the team, aren’t take charge guys and guys you’d expect to talk to the media about the team and help keep players in line. I’m excited but the future when some of these guys grow up. Right now, they just sound like a bunch of high school kids that’s “gone sting dey ass”.

scorp, maybe you should become a Cowboys fan with the praise for Mike Jenkins and Anthony Spencer. You praise these cowboys who have been in the league the same amount of time as DJax. But these guys are proven to “bump receivers out of bounds” and chase qb’s around. Give me a break. How about you show the support for your own TEAM? Give DJax credit because he has done a lot in 3 years, just like Jenkins and Spencer have.

As far as the leadership, to me how long do you have to be in the league before you are a “veteran leader”? That’s bullshit. Akers is a veteran leader. Who cares that he is a kicker. Jason Avant has been in the league 5 years, is he a veteran leader? I’m tired of this “veteran leadership” stuff.

Listen, you DON’T have to be a veteran to be a leader. Leadership is a character quality, some guys have it and some don’t. It has nothing to do with being a veteran. A leader can become a leader after being in the league 2 years. It’s about showing the will to succeed on the field and encouraging your teammates to go to battle with you. Not about how long you’ve been in the league.

Veteran leadership is a term coined because guys that have been in the league for 7 or 8 years have been leading for 5 or 6 of them. When did Dawk become a leader? I’d like to think it was 1999 when McNabb became the starter. That would be his 4th season in the NFL.

Scorp, you speak with wisdom. I think “our youth is showing.” Don’t get me wrong. I hope everything falls into place and we win the Superbowl. However, it’s only May 12th. We’re not even half-way through May, and I’m reading about how “We’re such good friends on and off the field; We’re the young guns; We’re gonna get YAC, etc.”

Never mind the fact that each year, there is at least one key injury. If that injury happened to be DeSean Jackson, it would probably change the offense in dramatic fashion, not to mention the return teams. If there is no one to stretch the field or draw double coverage, the entire offense is altered.

An injury on the offensive line (God forbid) could be critical. I think we learned that last year with Jamal Jackson. I’d never seen an NFL center repeatedly hike to the ball to himself before.

Also, there is a learning curve for any rookie QB. In many ways, Kolb is a rookie. Obviously, he knows the playbook. However, playing against defenses who know your strengths and weaknesses is quite different than coming in for a game or two as a sub.

Most importantly, as far as I’m concerned, Reid’s play calling leaves much to be desired. By calling so many pass plays, it is my opinion that he sets his QB up for failure. In the NFL, every advantage is needed. When teams know what you’re going to do, it makes the QB’s job more difficult. I believe Reid is much too predictable and his offense too imbalanced.

In conjunction with play calling, there’s the execution of plays. Dick Vermeil used to say that getting the timing down on running plays is much more difficult than getting it down on passing plays. I doubt that Reid places the proper emphasis on practicing running plays.

There are equally as many arguments to support that our offense could be great. Time will tell.

Only in December, when players are banged up and the season is on the line, will we find out about this team. At the end of this year’s schedule, we’ve got Dallas, the Giants, Minnesota and Dallas. That’s when I want to hear “We’re such good friends on and off the field; We’re the young guns; We’re gonna get YAC, etc.”

I agree drummer. I have no prob with the confidence. I just don’t need to hear it. I need to only see it. That’s all. And you’re right about the injury. Jackson and his frail little body has already had groin, ankle, hamstring and a concussion from being hit on the shoulder. So I don’t need anyone talking about what they are gonna do. I just want them to go do it. Period.

Eaglesbeliever whatever you say man. Just like everyone was crying about leadership when Dawk was gone and blah blah blah the same is true here. We don’t have good veteran leaders right now. Not saying someone won’t emerge later, but right now we don’t. Last year everyone was looking to Sheldon Brown and Mikell to be that leadership. Well Brown isn’t here and Mikell may be a good leader on the field. But EVERY teams needs that guy that keeps the young guys grounded and steps in front of the camera because they know that everything doesn’t need to be on record. We don’t have that now. And you may be fine, that’s ok. That’s one thing that I don’t like about the team. And just because I’m not overly positive of this team right now doesn’t mean I’m not a fan. Ask the eagles that as I pay my invoice for my season tickets. Excuse me for not being exciting about WHAT I’M PAYING FOR.

You can go with your blind faith all you want but there is no history with any of these players to put all your faith in and act like this is the next coming of the “Greatest show on turf”. EagleBeliever
EagleBeliever

I never said they would be the “greatest show on turf”. But you have to give credit where credit is due. Jackson has done nothing but impress since he entered this league. When he was drafted, most said, you can’t expect a rookie to contribute right away…expectation exceeded. Then it was “how is jackson going to get over the sophmore slump?”..i think it’s safe to say that there was no slump.

The team has set franchise records for points scored the past two seasons. Yes McNabb was here and you can argue that they have a brand new QB now, but the same explosive WR’s are there and they have a good group of RB’s. Not to mention our TE emerged as one of the best in the league.

This isn’t blind faith. I’m tired of every offseason the fans and media trying to find some way to say that this team isn’t good enough. Well listen, we won’t know if they are good enough until they actually play a game. I understand you have a problem with things that are being said off the field, understandable. I just don’t understand how all of these Eagle fans are saying…”yea well we will see how Desean does when he crosses the middle and gets his clock rung” like you guys secretly want it to happen. Just because we have a new QB that knows the WC offense doesn’t mean he is going to get slammed like you believe.

Fans in Philly NEVER give the player the benefit of the doubt. It’s ALWAYS “we know this and we know that” and we like to believe everything the reporters have to say. Fact of the matter is, that most of us, don’t know shit.

drummerwinslow
drummerwinslow
May 12, 2010 12:45 pm

It’s got to be fairly obvious by now that I don’t believe McNabb was the biggest problem with our squad. Undoubtedly, I had to scratch my head whenever he threw gofer balls or made poor decisions. McNabb took a lot of punishment on the field, which would make any QB gun shy. Don’t believe me? Check out Tom Brady since his injury. Remember, McNabb threw 3 TDs on a broken ankle, was repeatedly sacked with a sports hernia, and played through various other injuries.

I believe it was time for McNabb to move on. Like me, he’s a sensitive guy. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being sensitive, but let’s face it, Philly is tough!!! Only in Philly do you get killed for puking, despite the fact that each time McNabb puked he thew a TD, and despite the fact that many NFL players puke. In fact, DeSean Jackson was seen puking on national TV, but I never heard a murmur. I digress.

I believe Reid was the bigger problem. He’s such a perplexing coach. The guy is absolutely brilliant in many ways, i.e., game planning and motivating players (especially at the end of the season). At the same token, he has certain blind spots that make say, “What in th World . . .!!”

For years, everyone and their mama knew this team needed top flight receivers. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that the team who throws more passes than any other would need the best receivers. Can you say Ricky Manning, Jr.? Shall we talk linebackers, punt returners, fullbacks, TEs (LJ Smith?), a running game, etc.?

It has been a painfully slow change for Reid in his 11 years. We now have receivers, though I wish they were bigger. (Honestly, I wanted Dez Bryant.) We also have a FB and some size at MLB. At the beginning of last year, Reid showed signs of running a more balanced offense, but he later reverted to his pass-happy ways.

Hopefully, he’ll give Kolb a fighting chance by employing a more balance attack. Football really is the ultimate team sport.

I never said you said they were. I’m sick of hearing about all the hype from FO apologists and the players. Just play ball. Period. Who cares what you’re tired of? Seriously? Just because you refuse to look at the deficiencies doesn’t mean others can’t point them out. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Period. And you’re right Philly fans never give them the benefit of the doubt, but none of these guys have earned that yet. So excuse me for not feeling warm and fuzzy just yet. These guys have proved nothing and talking big like they will set the league on fire. Once again, I love the confidence I just don’t need to hear it, I want to see it. Talk is cheap and I’ll wait until the season starts and actually see these guys play before I get warm and fuzzy about them. It’s ok for you to be positive about everything. That is 100% fine if that’show you. But everyone doesn’t feel that way and they have valid reasons and are liberty to express it just the same as you. You just have to face the facts that some people are jaded toward the Eagles until they prove otherwise.

It’s like someone that hates the opposite sex because of their past experiences. They are very negative towards them until someone proves them wrong. Same thing here. People have been so disappointed by this organization and the fact that you still have Joe Banner and Reid still make people have doubts about the team. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t like it move on, but so what everyone doesn’t view things like you? Are you that sensitive that it pisses you off so much that you feel you have to say something each time? The truth of the matter Philly fans, we swear we are the most passionate and tough fans ever but deep down we are the most sensitive. Not sensitive in a punk way but sensitive in a way where it’s too easy to get our emotions going. As soon as someone says something negative about philly fans, we start crying and do the “Woe is me” routine because the national media slams Philly. Dude just get over it an move on. Seriously.

I’m going to be positive by saying Kolb will go down as the greatest quarterback to strap up. When he’s through names like Brady, Manning, Montana, will be after thoughts. The change I’m hoping for is Jake Locker in next year’s draft. If he gets pulled after game six for throwing a ridiculous number of interceptions all of this stuff is going to look players in the midst of pure delusion. What’s worse is that it’s sounding like they are putting so much on Kolb that if a change does have to be made it’s going to blow a huge psychological hole in the brain of the offense.(that’s way too much weight for an unproven player) What’s going to happen when a ball sails slightly high, is tipped into an interception and Kolb starts pointing fingers? McNabb really wouldn’t argue with players on the field, but I don’t think Kolb is going to have that level of composure.
