Collins Is Talking The Talk, Now He Must Walk It

I enjoyed listening to Doug Collins today at the news conference because he said all of the right things.¬† He talked about the Sixers having to shoot 55% to win because they didn’t commit themselves to play well enough and hard enough on defense.

It’s what I wanted to hear and it’s what everybody wanted to hear but talking and doing are two different things.

Collins may not realize it but the Philadelphia sports town he played in during the late 70’s and early 80’s doesn’t exist.¬† The success of talk radio and the ability for fans to voice their discontent there and on the internet has made the town a much tougher sports town.

“We’re going to be a defensive-minded team, speed, quickness. You have to have young pieces to do that, high energy. We have that. And we have some players on the team that I’m going to have to revitalize a little bit and get their joy of the game back.

I wonder who he’s talking about, maybe Andre Iguodala or maybe Elton Brand.¬† These guys have to exert more energy on the defensive side of the floor.¬† If you get the chance watch the Boston Celtics and the way they work on the defensive side of the floor.

Collins singled out rookie point guard Jrue Holliday as a defensive-minded point guard who could do a great job of playing pressure man-to-man defense on the ball.

I loved it when he said Iguodala has the ability to be an All-NBA defensive player.¬† He’s never going to be a great offensive player but he can be a very good one and combine that with being great on the defensive end and you have an All-Star.

You’ve got a guy you can win with.

Brand can’t jump the way he used to, so he has to be physical inside in order to get position both defensively and offensively.¬† He’s got to be an effort first guy or he can’t be a good player in the league any more.

Collins has a lot of work to do but I’ll give him credit for talking the talk.

I’ll give Ed Stefanski credit for doing a lot better with his coach selection than he did on the last one.

I don’t think Collins will be here past three years.¬† He’ll hopefully get the franchise going in the right direction then hand it over to somebody who can take it the distance.

Collins has been in the Media for the last 10-15 years G,
He knows things are different today with the Internet,Blogs,Talk Radio,ESPN,TNT,etc etc in Philadelphia like they are everywhere from back in the 70’s & 80’s when he played…
His biggest challenge will be to educate the public and fans of Sixers about how to play the game of Professional Baskeball which hasn’t been played too well for a long time in Philadelphia…
The next 6-8 weeks will tell the tale of where this Franchise will be in 2-3 years time
I do wish him the best for he will give his best effort and be honest about going about building the Franchise back to where it belongs and used to be…
(Now E Stefanski and Ed Snider are another story… I am not so sure about their effort and honesty)
