Nate Allen opens camp as starting free safety

It looks like the Philadelphia Eagles could have another rookie at safety this year (not that anyone is shocked). Second-round pick Nate Allen impressed the coaches enough to be the starting free safety heading into training camp, according to Andy Reid.

“He did a nice job,” Reid said per Geoff Mosher of Delawareonline.com. “He’s a smart kid. He’s got a nice football mind. He’s a fast learner.”

He better be. Allen starting running with the first team after oft-injured Marlin Jackson went down with an Achilles injury.

Allen’s performance could go a long way in determining how good this Eagles defense will be this year. If he is out there blowing assignments and getting torched, it’s going to be a long season. But we haven’t even seen him in pads yet, so we can’t really say one way or another.

I do know that if this pass rush is markedly improved, then he’ll have a lot less to worry about. From what I’ve heard, QB’s aren’t nearly as accurate when they are flat on their backs.

That’s what I’m most interested in right now. With the inflx of pass rushers in the OTA’s and going into camp how are they doing? Are they being played out of position? How Graham doing? I know we can’t tell much during the “passing camps” but there has to be some report on their condition and how they’re responding to the rigors of camp. And new info on rookie performance wuold be great. I’ll go ahead and nominate Micah to write that one, I like that kid…no homo of course…

yeah okay… and macho harris impressed them last year… What does that say about this front office? G lets see some articles about andy reid? I wanna know what are the expectations for him to keep his job this year? say if they win 5 games is he most likely fired? what if they make the playoffs but lose in the first round?

umm get real macho wasnt givin a true shot..same with sean jones..what mcdermott did thatt JJ never did was pull guys our prematurely..like our horrible linebacker situation and shuffling..he actually had gocong play the middle…it was too funny..16 games is what u need to evaluate a player off of..u need to see if guys can correct mistakes, make the adjustments , see if they can translate film to the field. you need to see if they have short memories and dont get too worried about stats and accolades..big coaching error on mcdermotts part..

I think we got Bobby Boucher from the South Central Louisiana State Mud Dogs for our backup safety.

Boucher is a linebacker and his mama won’t let him travel north…so no deal

This kid (Nate Allen) is going to do great. Macho Harris was a rookie CB playing Safety. Nate Allen has been playing safety for awhile and seems rather intelligent (as opposed to all the other people we’ve had playing safety – besides Mikell and Dawkins). Don’t worry about him, the focus needs to be on the d-line and CBs. In light of Mikell tweaking his knee, I wouldn’t mind seeing them bring in a veteran safety as a backup, but I’m not sure who is out there that is good.

Sounds like Demps might get some looks as a 3rd safety/CB hybrid in some packages. If he keeps his head out of his ass he might actually contribute.

I think the Eagles should bring in S K Hamlin or C Hart for some work-outs and interveiws
It would be smart to have an experienced Safety in the event that Mickell is out longer than expected or if Demps/Harris are not ready for Prime Time or if there are any other injuries…
The Safety and CB positions are looking a little thin right now with a lack of experienced players..

Paul – we have experience at CB. Patterson, Hanson, Hobbs, all are vets.

schill…you left out Assante as a veteran too. otherwise I agree with your point that we have veterans at the CB positions but not the Safety positions.

As weird as it may sound, I think alot of the defensive backfield play this year will be determined by how well our DL is able to get pressure. If we are able to get good, consistant pressure on the qb it will make the defensive backfield’s job alot more simple, otherwise a lack of experience or talent is exposed and exploited in this league. With the upgrade in DB coaching this year I believe that it should not be an issue with scheme or technique but rather overall talent and performance from the other positions on defense.

wait a min we went from troy and bobby with lito and sheldon in on nickel and dime packages to sheldon and lito with rod hood to now assante (whom i do like) to i guess ellis hobbs lmao joselio hanson lololol and dimitri patterson rofl awe man i love this site u guys will tell me how trevard lindley is the next deion u know what this whole trading and cutting the eagels i rooted for stuff has really opened my eyes. i have alot of friends all over and they use to give me hell like u eagles fans r really crazy like u guys r blind yall have so many glaring holes and yet u think u r great and sadly this was in the midst of our nfc chip after nfc chip yrs and now that im not too fond of this team i see what they mean like yall will say something positive about any bum wearing green unreal i guess i was guilty of that myself for 20 yrs just awful

Green – I figured he was obvious. Really the only inexperience at CB is Lindley and both G and the team website guys are saying good things about the rook. Sure Sheldon leaves a hole, but that’s how we all felt when Taylor and Vincent left – Sheldon and Lito came in and we were all like ‘sure they drafted them high, but who are these young stiffs?’ – look how that turned out. Lindley was said to be a 2nd rnd talent. We’ll see.

Philly will – who said anything about comparing Trevard LIndley to Deion!? If someone did, that’s utterly ridiculous. But Hanson is a lot like Rod Hood btw. He was a no name who excelled in the nickel and then developed. Hanson is starting to play well more and more. Remember, when lito and sheldon came one, everyone doubted them. Now you’re doing that with the new young guys. I’m not saying they’ll be great, trust me. But if history tells us, we’re wrong to doubt before they get a shot.

And pWhilly – dude Nate Allen was going to start – when they drafted him, everyone knew he’d be starting this year. He was deemed as an NFL ready safety coming out and Marlin was signed with the injuries as a ? mark – the team didn’t deny that. He was signed before they drafted Allen. This is not a default move. They were just going to have Marlin be the ‘starter’ in OTAs and maybe the beginning of camp, with Allen coming on gradually. Now Nate’s just getting more work earlier.

No doubt in my mind that N Allen was going to be a starter this season..
My concern is the Mickell while consistent is another year olders and perhaps has lost a 1/2 step..
I hope that Demps/Harris will be ready to replace him for I think Mickell doesn’t have a whole lot left..
Can anyone name a DB who over the last 3 seasons has dropped more potential INT”s than Mickell..
He is a solid player but has lousy hands if you ask me…

Philly Will – fair enough if you want to call that hypocrisy, though I was following football common sense – you can’t argue the timing – Jackson was acquired pre draft and look what happened with Sean Jones, Demps and Macho Harris – they brought in vets, but started rooks/first year guys. Also they penciled in vets, only to have rooks beat them out in camp.

and seriously phillywill, your whole angle here with the Marlin Jackson => Nate Allen thing is you just cherry picking to find something negative to say. Most people, even the ‘haters’, those who think reid sucks or the Eagles are cheap, agree with me there. When they signed Jackson they were saying ‘if he can stay healthy’… etc. or ‘when healthy he was…when healthy he can be…’. When have they drafted a guy that high recently and not given him a chance to start?

Philly will – there was a chance that he stayed healthy, then they could have benefited from his play – you can’t understand that? In today’s NFL, you have to sign some players in FA that are risks, and maybe cut them before the season (or in this case put ‘m on IR). It’s worth the risk, potential gain and what did they lost from it? And you keep on talking about the CFL guy Mallet – and now you say they only got bums U ‘neva’ heard of – you never heard of MIKE BELL? Running back for the SB champs last year (albeit by committee)!? They also drafted an RB genius – and Mallet is behind those guys and Buckley for the love of god. You’re so negative that you’re picking bones about our current 6th string RB! Do you realize how ridiculous that is – every year every team needs to sign scrubs and long shots to be camp bodies. You gotta run someone against the #3 defense in camp. But you don’t get it, you treat every offseason signing as if they are paying the guy starting money and promising him a roster spot. Westbrook was DONE DONE DONE – who does he play for right now? If the skins didn’t get McNabb, there’s no way they’d be sniffing around 36. You know that, you’re just holding on to emotion there.

To answer you ? – Charles Scott – dude I didn’t know him prior to the draft and I watched tape/read up on him then. But fact of the matter is, you’re haggling about backups – McCoy, Bell and Weaver are your running backs, and they are all proven and accomplished enough to have faith in our RBs, especially considering that Reid usually doesn’t run much. Yeah, I can’t understand that you’d take BWest over 40 over Bell. I never compared our RBs to Washington – here’s a comparison of the Eagles backs last year to those Wash. guys – Weaver – 463 yrds, 4 TDs, McCoy 945 yrds, 4 TD, Mike Bell 666 yrds, 5 TD. That’s 2074 yrds, and 13 TDs – for the Eagles RBs that will get the ball this year. Notice I didn’t include ELDRA Buckley – he most likely won’t make the team this year or if he does, won’t carry much. Parker – 453 yrds, 1 TD, LJ 661 yrds, 0 TD, Portis 651 yrds, 2 TD. Added up for the skins – 1765 yrds, 3 TDs. Factor in that Washington is a running team first, the Eagles aren’t. Also factor in that you feel guys coming of injuries are worthless – or at least Jackson – that applies to Parker and Portis too Genius. And for Westbrook – who’s not on a team right now – 455 yrds and 2 TDs last year. You see you’re living in the past, falling in love with big names. And confidently making comparisons that in reality argue very strongly AGAINST your point. And for the record – you not knowing who a guy is has nothing to do with how good of a player he is. You’re very familiar with Reno Mahe, Jamarcuss Russell, and a lot of other crappy players’ names, doesn’t make them good.

Man, stop wasting your time arguing with Phillywill. He cant even type on a 5th grade level, and doesnt even know players names. Hes obviously one of these Negadelphians who make it embarrassing to be an Eagles fan, bc people who dont know would think real fans who know and understand the game are all like him. He’s obviously maybe 15 at that (now he will come on saying hes in his 20s which would make it all the more embarrassing that he still doesnt know how to properly communicate with another human being) and he argues points that either make no sense or show his COMPLETE lack of any kind of knowledge of the game. I wish people like him actually had a life and didnt come on Eagles websites commenting on things they have no idea about, on a beautiful Saturday in the summer, and comments all day. Its pathetic and your feeding into his ridiculous comments that give you a headache trying to read the babbling, one-sentence paragraphs that end up saying absolutely nothing in the end. He would make a GREAT politician…Cant speak right, complains about things he doesnt even know about, and can babble on for a long time without actually saying ANYTHING of substance. Nothing annoys me more than uneducated, ignorant people who try to argue with lame arguments that arent even true most of the time.
