Like it or not, Phillies fans, the hometown baseball team seems to be interested in bringing back RHP Pedro Martinez for round 2. GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. confirmed that the team has talked to the 38-year old pitcher about coming back to a role similar to what he was in last year.
“We have talked to his agent, but there’s nothing so far,” Amaro Jr. said. “We are not negotiating, but we’ve been talking to him. It all depends on whether he wants to play or not.”
Sources close to Martinez have told ESPNDeportes that he is interested in coming back for the second half of the season. Apparently, he’s been working out in the Dominican and in Miami.
Pedro was very good for the Phillies in the regular season, going 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA. He wasn’t awful in the playoffs, but he wasn’t great either. His 3.71 ERA was fine, but he was 0-2 including two starts in the World Series against the New York Yankees.
According to Amaro, the talks began “a few weeks ago. We have talked to Pedro, but we don’t know [yet].”
Desperate times call for desperate measures…though Pedro pitched great last year and I hope they bring him back since Moyer/Blanton/Kendrick are not getting it done..(which really shouldn’t be a surprise to many fans)
I am still pissed off from the off-season when they didn’t go out and to get relief pitcher help when there was plenty of the market and didn’t re-sign Chan Ho Park, then they go out and sign a D Baez and Herndon… and still are counting on B Lidge and JC Romero after their injuries & surgeries…
then have Madson lose his cool and break his foot by kicking a chair … are you kidding me…
who is running this team anymore…
