As G. mentioned in a previous post, Philadelphia sports has sacred cows. One of those sacred cows is Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley. So when he goes in the tank and hits .257, there must be something wrong, right? He couldn’t possibly just be stinking up the joint, right?
Well, it comes out now that maybe something is wrong. Like a knee injury?
In an interview with Baseball Prospectus, first base coach Davey Lopes was asked about his team’s aggressiveness (or lack thereof) on the base paths. He noted that Rollins has been hurt, Victorino is starting to come around and Jayson Werth has been uncharacteristically patient. Then, he got to Utley.
“Chase [Utley] has been hampered by a little bit of a knee injury,” Lopes said.
Utley is a tough read when it comes to injuries because he’ll never talk about them. He could have one leg missing and he’d react like the black knight in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
Usually, Utley injuries stay quiet so I’ll be curious to see what the team has to say about this one. But, this would explain a lot.
