NHL Salary Cap Raised 5% for Next Season; Flyers Fans Rejoice

The National Hockey League Player‚Äôs Association (NHLPA) elected today to increase the salary cap by 5%.¬† The salary cap next season will be roughly $59 million, raising the Philadelphia Flyers’ available cap space to $10.2 million ($10.7 million if you waive enforcer Riley Cote).¬† This grants the Flyers more freedom to sign recently acquired defenseman Dan Hamhuis (likely at $4.25 million) and defenseman Braydon Coburn ($2.75 million), leaving $3.2 million to sign a starting goaltender, a top-six right winger, and restricted free agent Daryl Powe.

Obviously, there is still more money to move to make this team a Stanley Cup Champion. Still, it’s a start.

The NHLPA also elected to extend the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for another year.  All you need to know about this extension is that another NHL lockout was avoided for another year. Flyers fans, rejoice!

Good, now we’ll have something to talk about when the NFL strike is going on.

If they manage to sign both Hamhuis and Coburn, it will be a good offseason. Even Leighton in goal wouldn’t be that bad if they have 5 good defenders and a young 6th (Syvret or Bartulis) in front of him.

Any chance Ray Emery can come back, or is he done? Lots of athletes have been permanently finished by that kind of injury… he’s no Bo Jackson, but he might be following in his wheelchair…
