Collins Says All The Starting Jobs Are Open, They Should Be

New Sixers coach Doug Collins wants to make it clear that nobody has a sure starting position on this basketball team.¬† Yes, they expect Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner to start in the backcourt, but if Lou Williams can win the job, he’ll be the starter over either of the forementioned two.

The same is true at the forward position with Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Elton Brand and Andres Nocioni.  The best players will start.

Collins says that honesty is the backbone of his relationship¬† with his players. “The best players will start'” the head coach said again last night.

He said he talked to Williams for an hour yesterday to make sure he understood that he could win the job as a starting guard.¬† In addition, Collins wanted to make sure that Williams would be willing to give the team everything he had, if he doesn’t win the starting job and they asked him to come off the bench.

Collins has said more than one or two times that they’re going to battle and compete at their training camp and at practice throughout the year.¬† It’s going to be work, work, work for this team and that’s especially true on the defensive end of the court.

The head coach wants to see Iguodala going head-to-head against Turner, while Williams and Holiday battle.¬† Collins said “attitude” is the main reason he wanted Nocioni brought in here.¬† According to the former Sixers guard, Nocioni has the type of nasty, competitive attitude which he wants to spread to the rest of the team.

Collins  believes this team needs to compete at all times in order to get better.  I agree with him.

Maybe I was the only guy who saw this last night, but Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski looked like somebody had taken his lunch when he and assistant GM Tony DiLeo at the team’s announcement of drafting Turner with the second pick in the draft.¬† He looked like he knew something that we didn’t know.

Maybe he’s concerned that he might get relieved of his duties.

i love the turner pick wish we could get cp3 now for iggy we need a pg badly
i just hope the people of philadelphia understand that jrue holiday was put into the starting role by ed stefanski last yr because the season was over and he wanted him to grow. in no way is he is better than lou williams or anyone. obviously there was going to be a pg battle when the 2nd leading scorer on your team was lou will and your starting pg avgs 8 and 3ast 2.5 to’s. i know your going to say he’s young and if he’s so young and not ready he shouldnt be on the floor. there arent many starting pg’s wit 8ppg avg’s and if u compare him to other rookie pgs jrue plays more min than lawson maynor and just 2 less min than collison and his numbers are worse than all of them. I hope dougie really means its an open battle cause if it is no way jrue holiday is beating out to many nba pgs.

Pwill, its obvious you’re only looking at stats which is just plain silly for the pg position. Jru is a pass first guy, court general…and he was playing w the sammy and broken coach/system issue last yr. You are all kinds of wrong on this.

jrue a pass first guy cause he cant score
women and men lie numbers dont
umm andre miller played with sammy allen iverson played with sammy so what
philly cracks me up ai avgd 22 a gm rookie yr scored 40 4 times in a row and was criticized
this kid cant crack 20 twice in a row if u let him score he cant get 10 asts if he was on the dream team so what he hustles on d so did eric snow e snow all over and schill for the record and dont lie how many sixer games did u watch this yr well i wantched about 70 to 75 im well aware f what jrue hoilday can do and i followed him at ucla where he stunk it up for yr he was #1 prospect coming out hs and was posed to a be a top 5 lock until gms see how limited he is offensively. who else do u consider floor generals chauncy billups 19ppg stev nash 18 ppg cp3 20ppg rondo 17 and 10 deron will 20 and i dont know any 8 ppg floor genreals

phillywill…it is obvious you don’t know the game of basketball….that’s all i have to say about that….
Rondo’s rookie year: 6.4 ppg
Nash’s rookie year: 3.3 ppg
Billups: 9.3 ppg in his 5th year in the league
Deron Williams: 10.8 ppg his rookie yar, 18 ppg this year…

You are obviously just ignorant and dont know the game of basketball…and the fact that you watched 70 – 75 sixers game this past year has actually poisoned your point of view of the game as Eddie Jordan ran the team horribly and played one of the worst schemes I have ever seen…stop commenting if you’re gonna be like that

i know the game of bball better than u
i know jrue holiday was a top 5 lock prior to his freshman season a top 10 lock after his freshman season
but after workouts and 1 st hand views from gm’s only 1’s that liked em as a 1st round player were the sixers
nugs stil were takn lawson utah still maynor
3rd ur talkn about their situations deron and rajon was the only 1 to get significant mins and rajon mins rookie yr were inconsistent
jrue plays 25 min a gm so u go back check ur dumb ass stats and u compare jrue to players who play 25 min a game notice i didnt mention tyreke evans johnny flynn also in his class cause they avg 30 min but since we talkin rookie pg numbers i guess tyreke had more talent around him i guess flynn has more talent i guess stephen curry has more talent surrounding him
obviously ur wrong ur best bet would have been to say his stats r worse cause he has better players around him he was 17th pick not a top pick he came to a playoff team
only thing ur rite about is eddie jordan i will give u that worse coach ever

When Jrue Holiday wins the starting competition over Lou Williams, Phillywill will be saying that he knows more than Doug Collins. No need to listen to this moron.

My take is that J Holiday has a lot of improvement to do in his shooting and his overall game.
I think L Williams is the better point guard at this time to run an NBA Offense. Holiday does have more upside and far more athletic ability, but he has to put in a lot of hard work and practice his shooting so he can live up to his potential.. I do agree with PW that Holiday has been over-rated a bit and hasn’t lived up to his potential at UCLA or the Sixers as of yet, but he’s young and has the next 2 years to figure it out.
