Mornhinweg Talks About Kevin Kolb’s Strengths And Challenges

Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg talked to the media this afternoon and he answered quite a few questions about the team’s new starting quarterback, Kevin Kolb.¬† Marty talked about a number of goals that he has established for the young signal caller.

The first goal concerns him having a high completion percentage.  The second goal concerned him staying away from interceptions.

I told you earlier that Kolb’s biggest challenge will be running the offense yet, staying away from turnovers.¬† The number of interceptions he throws will be a key and when he throws them will be important also.¬† Interceptions that create immediate scoring opportunities for the other team when games are on the line will have to be avoided.

One of the reporters asked Marty about whether he was open to Kolb throwing more picks than McNabb did since Donovan has second lowest interception to attempted pass ratio in the history of the game.¬† Marty wasn’t willing to say he was open to Kolb throwing more picks.

“Every quarterback‚Äôs a little bit different. Some don‚Äôt anticipate as well as others early in their career, and that could lead to a few more turnovers. I‚Äôm not sure Kevin‚Äôs that way. And he‚Äôs built up some time in the league, so he‚Äôs seen a lot. Maybe he hasn‚Äôt had quite the experience. But I think he‚Äôll be just fine. We may go through some more ups and downs with him, especially early. So you can anticipate some of that. But he‚Äôs a quick learner who will learn from his mistakes and move on.”

Next up, Mornhinweg talked about the positive qualities of his starting quarterback.

“The best qualities that Kevin has, and there‚Äôs many of them, is quick decision-making and his accuracy and his timing. He‚Äôs got a good amount of skill and ability. And he‚Äôs got some guts. And some gut-instincts as well.”

Marty expects Kevin to make his share of mistakes but he believes he will quickly learn from them and not make the same mistake twice.

“He got into some regular-season games last year and played very well for the most part. There were 2 or 3 critical errors that he made and he learned from them. I can remember there was a play early in his career, there was a blitz and he just did the wrong thing. A year later in his second game last year, he was in the same spot. Similar play, similar situation. He did the perfect thing and we gained 16-18 yards. So he learns quick. He learns from his mistakes.”

Marty talked in detail about how he will judge Kolb’s performances but there’s one stat that the offensive coordinator didn’t talk about which I believe will be the number stat he will be judged by and I’m talking about wins and losses.¬† Like a pitcher in baseball, Kolb can play great but if the team doesn’t win, fans will look at it negatively.

Many times a quarterback’s best weapon is a good defense or a quality return man.

Giants just picked up Alex Hall – college DE turned Browns LB turned Eagles cut turned Giants signing. Sure, he probably won’t make the team. They’re listing him at DE there. But this shows again how certain players are hard to fit into the NFL systems in a 4-3 but are really not pure DEs or LBs. It’s not only the Eagles who try to mess around and take some chances with this type of thing.Scorp……

Good job by the FO getting Graham into camp quickly. Was happy to see the report on CSN.

schiller, what does this have to do with this article? And no one ever said that the Eagles are the only ones that do it. Frankly, I don’t care what other teams do, when the eagles do it, it doesn’t usually work out. As I stated in the other post, some guys can make the transition but MOST guys don’t. The chances are very low and I can give a flying flute what the Giants are doing. All I’m worried about is what the Eagles are doing AND I DON’T WANT THE EAGLES EXPERIMENTING BECAUSE THEIR TRACK RECORD ISN’T THE BEST. So what’s your point again?

I am more concerned about the Giants pick-up MLB K Bulluck who is getting up there and coming off knee injury, but can still play the run, red-zone & short-yardage Defense as well as anyone which was a real need for the Giants Defense… (Good pick-up by them)

I don’t know G, this kid could lose a lot of games for the team and I doubt there will be the amount of scrutiny that other QBs have had to endure. Given all of the local articles on Kolb and his great ability without experience the media at least is sure to give the guy a pass for a long time…until think people have forgotten about the articles they wrote over the last couple of weeks.

Butch – uh, where have you been all our lives? What world do you live in? You really think that the media will go easy on Kolb? It’s Philly. You seem to be assuming that they’ll hold to their opinions, maintain integrity and be patient as opposed to reactionary. YEAH FRICKIN RIGHT. Don’t put stock into what they write now, it’s filler, busy work for their employment. The philly media is as fair weather as some of the fans here – remember a few weeks ago when the Phillies were doomed and had no hope? And now (even pre-Oswalt!?) and that’s still without rollins utley and victorino. If history tells us anything it’s that the Philly media will burn cobb mercilessly if he sucks it up, (save for a few allowances for first year ups and downs that Donny got himself) or anoint the kid a stud if he plays well. Hey, I could be wrong, but I think most would agree with my assessment of their track record.

The Cowboys won’t use Bryant’s injury to cry and moan about any loses sustained.

Oh how clever of you bigE. I might have to agree with you there as losing a wr, in an already productive passing game, isn’t nearly as costly as losing your 1rst and 2nd team MLB and starting center. You may like to make yourself out to be a ‘tough guy’ who tolertes ‘no excuses’ – congrats, your ego must be doing great. But football people (and I believe G recently wrote about how you have to hope for a lack of key injuries) will tell you that it can be fatal to a season for a team. If you don’t get that after watching Donny with injuries, AND SO MANY OTHERS, just in the course of the Eagles – then you’re not tough, you’re just plainly in denial.
