Eagles Full Roster Gets In Their First Training Camp Workout

The Eagles got in their first full squad practice under the leadership of Kevin Kolb.  He threw the ball very well and was very sharp.  It was a short practice with the offense going up and down the field, while working against the scout team.

You could hear Asante Sameul’s voice above the crowd, as he talked trash to any and everybody who was on the field.¬† The offense ran a double-move route and Kolb hit DeSean Jackson on a deep route.

Samuel let Kolb know that he’d better not run that route when he’s in there.¬† He called out young rookie quarterback Mike Kafka and let him know that he wanted him to throw the ball in his area, so that he, Samuel could work on his ball skills.

It’s a bit quieter at practice now without McNabb around to get into it with

On the second play from  scrimmage, Kolb hit wide receiver Jeremy Maclin with a bomb as he got behind the coverage.  They worked on quite a few pass plays with Kolb getting the ball to Jackson, Maclin and Brent Celek.  There were some screens to LeSean McCoy and draw plays with Mike Bell.

Jason Avant made a great one-handed catch on a deep pass by Michael Vick.

You can see that they’re putting together an offense for Kolb and another one for Vick.¬† Many times they have Vick rolling out and putting pressure on the defense at the corner.¬† Most of the time, Kolb is throwing out of the pocket.

Rookie quarterback Kafka had a tough time in the workout.¬† He didn’t complete many passes but it was understandable since he was running the scout team.

Eagles traded Joe Mays for J.J. Arrington. Not that big of a deal both of them probly wouldnt have made there teams. At least Arrington gets to learn the system during traing camp.

Yeah, worst case scenario, Arrington doesn’t make the team and the Eagles get a 6th round pick in 2012 for Mays who would’ve been cut. Howie sure is making good on his promise to stay aggressive and continue making moves to improve the roster. But I gotta admit that the Kelly Washington signing is puzzling. Doesn’t seem to bode well for Baskett eh?

And of course another health case in that Arrington is recovering from microfracture knee surgery???!!!! How is this guy remotely going to make the team with those already here? Seems like a round-about move just to acquire a pick next year.

I expect O Gaither to be traded to the St Lous Rams for a Futre Draft pick also if the Eagles like their young LB’s and in paticular J Cheney…(If Eagles think Cheney is the real deal then Gaither is a goner)
One thing to keep in mind about Arrington, he’s was a very good Kick-Off/Punt returner out of COllege and a very good receiver out of the back-field… They probably picked him up as insurance for the Return Team… I am not so sure how much longer they want D-Jax handling Punts for the fear of injury and I also don’t think they will have Hobbs returning Kick-offs since he’s a likely starter
The key is Q Demps, if he stays as a back-up, then he will probably return Kick-offs, if he plays poorly like last camp and gets cut, then who is going to return Kick-Offs…

The Mays trade is a no lose situation. Arington was a good player before the injury – if he works out – great – a 6th rd special teams player that wasn’t going to make the team (I didn’t think he was) was all it cost us.

If he doesn’t – we get the draft pick back we spent on him – like driving a car for a couple years to see if you like it, getting one you may like more – and if you don’t like that – pick a new car – sounds like a decent trade (and no – it is not going to be the trade that makes the difference in winning the SB)

I think they keep Gaither because when healthy, he’s a solid backup at Mike and Will and he surely knows the D. They usually keep 7 LBs and I say Gaither is the 7th – assuming that both draft picks make it at LB. If Bradley has anoher injury (just knocked on wood), they’ll have a vet backup MLB and not be forced to go with Cheney – a rook there. But with Roseman at GM, who da heck knows.

Gaither defintiely has good experience & knowledge at all the LB’s positions.
I am thinking the final roster will have 9 DL, 6LB, 5 CB and 4 Safety.. for 24 Defensive spots.
The Rams have a need at LB and Gaither and Rams Coach Spags have some good history together,
the Eagles could probably get a 4th Rd pick in return and Omar would probably have a legitimate shot at being a starter for the Rams. I think it’s a matter of how quick these young LB’s develop thru camp but would not be surprised to see this occur witin 2 weeks.

Paul – if your so set on 24 on D, knowing that there’s 3 ST spots – Akers, Sav and Dorenbos, where is your extra O guy? 4 RB? 4TE? 11 OL? 2 FB? you seem to be sticking to random restraints there – ususally they keep 25 D…

For the Offense– 25 Roster spots

3-QB ( Kolb, Vick, Kafka)
4-RB ( Weaver,McCoy,Bell, and ? )
5-WR ( D-Jax,Maclin,Avant,R Cooper and K Washington)
3- TE (Celek,Ingram, and Harbor -this is the additional roster spot for the Offfense)
10-OL (Peters,Herremans,Cole,Andrews,Justice,McGlynn,Jean GIlles, Dunlap, J Jackson and
1 other player though a lot depends on Herremans and Jackson’s rehab and return to the
active roster)

25 Offense, 24 Defense and 3 Special Teams make the 52 Man Roster
( I think with the O/Line having Herremans and Jackson still recovering, they may open the season with an extra OL, plus I really think they like both Ingram and Harbor which will give them 3 TE where in years past, they have carried 2 TE’s, but now they can use Harbor as an H-back,FB,WR and move him around different formations which AR loves to have those versatile players who can move around)

Paulman, there’s no ’52 Man Roster’ – it’s 53. Hence, I say Gaither makes it. I also don’t know that they keep 4 DTs – they don’t need it with Tapp and Teo’Nesheim going inside to DT…. too early to tell, but if you’re counting, get the total # right – it’s 53.

Panthers started Sunday and already have 6 players on the PUP list,
They do have all their draft picks signed but this year will be a difficult one to call for them
A young QB in M Moore, only proven WR is Steve SMith who is out to the 1st week of the season with a broken arm..A very good O/Line and great RB’s..
Similar to the Eagles, their defense is has lots of young players and lots of inexperience..
Their DL is unproven, LB’s & CB are the strength and they are very green at Safety…
My guess is a 7-8 win season which may not be good enough to retain Head Coach J Fox who is in his last year of contract and is on the hot seat..
