I can’t say enough about the quality of the acceptance speech by Magic Johnson for the 1992 Olympic Dream Team as they were inducted into the Basketball Hall of Famer this weekend. He made a great speech because it was graceful with a light-hearted jabs and compliments to his teammates. Johnson was both a great player and great leader, who showed why he’s been so successful in just about everything he has done.
Johnson handed the mic off to Larry Bird, who came up with a great one-liner, then had some fun taking a shot at their predecesors in the sixties who had talked about all the hardship they had been through to play in the 60’s Olympics.
He went through the list of people who had a hand in their triumph: Chuck Daley, David Stern, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, John Stockton, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, and finally Christian Laettner, who was the only collegiate representative.
Take a few minutes and enjoy his message.
An All-Star Line-up that won Olympic Gold in 1992 when favored by 25 points a game makes the HOF,
what a stupid, irrelevant idea. They were expected to win and they did, great, but HOF worthy ???
Yes Paulman. You make the HOF because you are the best or one of the best ever at what you do. This was the most dominant Olympic team ever hence making them HOFamers. If an NBA player was great but didn’t play against great competition they would still make the HOF because of how good they was.
Only one thing kept me out of the HOF… Talent….
If only they had HOF for incessant posting. You’d be a first ballet shoe in! 🙂
