The biggest surprise of this year’s Eagles training camp was the progress of the Eagles defense. They could be much better than anyone thought and become a good defense at the start of the season. Don’t get me wrong the Eagles offense should be explosive, but they’re young, the offensive line is banged up and this is Kevin Kolb’s first year at the helm.
As much as everybody talks about how having deadly targets like DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Brent Celek and Jason Avant will make life easier for Kolb, a good defense would help the youngster more than anything else. There’s nothing better that can aid Kevin Kolb and his development than a good defense.
Think about the young quarterbacks who have won championships and each of them had an outstanding defense. Two come to mind immediately, Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger.
If the Eagles defense were to give up 30 points a game, it would force Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg to have Kolb throwing the ball every down, exposing himself to every blitz in the book and forcing him to take a high number of chances throwing balls into the teeth of defenses. It would be a recipe for ups and downs, and a good number of turnovers.
On the other hand, a stingy Eagles defense will give Reid and Mornhinweg room to be more patient and it would give Kolb the freedom to play more conservatively as he gets his feet wet. I think this is the best way to develop a young quarterback. You don’t put them out there and throw the ball 40 plus times a game. You try to keep that number at 30 and below, and you throw the ball on your terms and not on the defense’s terms.
You don’t want Kolb and this young offense in 3rd and ten and above. You want them in 3rd and six or less. It will keep the threat of draws and screens on the defensive coordinators mind and limit the defenses Kolb will see.
A good defense is a quarterback’s best friend.
This Eagles defense has the potential to be better than we thought they were going to be. If they are it will allow the offense to develop over time and won’t force Kolb and the offense into situations where they have to score 30 points every week.
The pleasant surprises I saw on defense were the rehabilitation of Stewart Bradley. He really looks like he’s playing close to full strength and the knee isn’t bothering him physically and not limiting him mentally.
I like the physical attitude Ernie Sims has brought to the football team. There’s nothing that sends a more powerful message to an opposing offense than helmet under the chin. Still, Sims needs to prove that he has mastered the defense and can anticipate plays early enough to make some big plays, i.e. fumbles, interceptions and sacks.
Rookie defensive end Brandon Graham farther along than I expected. He’s not just a speed rusher. This youngster can beat you inside as well as outside. He’s got great handwork which is rare in young pass rushers.
Second round pick Nate Allen has also been consistent in the secondary. He hasn’t played a lot of all out football during training camp and the first game, but he’s nearly always in the right place on coverages and he doesn’t give up the big play.
Trevor Laws has stepped up his level of play, which will give the Eagles a better inside pass rush on third downs.
If this defense can start the season strong, it will give the Eagles a great chance to start off with some early wins and give the offense a chance to gain their timing and get into a rhythm.
Damn right a solid defense would make Kolbs life easier. Just take a look at McNabb’s first couple of seasons and the defense he had.
True.
well shoot we should win sb then
solid defense apparantly best offense we ever had finally have a qb that can throw a 5 yard slant in stride
finally have a quick decision maker and he is just so accurate and by far this is the most weapons i have seen on an eagles team since i have been alive
so if the d wont be our weakness this yr we should win sb or at least be right there when all said and done cause clearly our offense wasnt our weakness last yr and since we wont miss a beat because we actually improved at qb then i guess we will be playing for it all
yea rite
Well yea G. Everyone loves to point out that McNabb took the Eagles to those championship games early in his career, but they neglect the nasty defense the Eagles had. Could be the same thing for Kolb…
How about letting QB M Vick run an entire series each half (besides the Red-Zone and Wildcat sets)
Wouldn’t this be a good idea for Kolb to watch the other teams Defense from the sideline once in a while and be a nightmare for opposing Defenses and D/Coordinators to gameplan vesrus the Eagles and
prepare for both QB’s..
no not same at all
nasty d yea
torrence small and charles johnson at wide out na brown in the slot
duce staley in back field wasnt bad his back up darnell autry lol
not the same
no djax no maclin not even an avant lol
ok te was a wash chad lewis vs celek
but clearly not the same lol
Like if we have a stingy defense , Reid ISNT going to throw ever down?
hahahahahaha d could be like ravens
and andy will still run a mike martz o ozz lol
Ey, the great defense pass all the time mentality got us to 5 NFC Championships and a Superbowl….hopefully the QB we have now will make better decisions when it matters.
Paul, we hear you about letting Vick run an entire series or 2 every game. Do you really have to post that same thought in every article? Sheesh. I mean, we like your thoughts and suggestions here but we get it about haveing to prep for 2 QB’s It’s a good idea.
well if your qb cant make the right the decisions with these weapons he’s a complete scrub
G:
The key Eagles’ defensive stats this year for me, especially in the NFC East, will be TO’s, rushing yards given up per game, and receiving yards given up to the opposing TE. From just those stats, I believe, we’ll know if this Eagle’s defense is any better.
Defense wins. Everytime. End of story.
3 Areas of Concern
The TE postion is not deep or expereienced (can Harbor block and Ingram may end up on IR and is not had a godo camp at all this year and is not fully recovered from his knww injury)
Back-up RB position — Is M Bell for real or is this just another short stop in his carreer where the enigmatic Bell is not heatlhy or focused on playing football.. Who else emerges as a legitimate RB who can catch, run and block.. (C Scott/Mallet I would like to see if they can step up and do)
CB Position — Hobbs has had an excellent camp, can Hanson at 5’9″ really mask up versus the bigger WR in today’s NFL.. can Patterson or Harris make an impact or even make the team…
I think T Lindley will turn out to be a very good CB but will still go through his up & downs as a Rookie..
I look at the LB corp and basically see 4 players battling it out for maybe 2 spots (Cheney,White,Fokou,Lawrence)
I think Bradley,Sims,Jordan,Clayton.Gaither are 5 players that are locks
25 Players on Defense for Eagles for 2010
DE (5) Cole, Parker,Tapp,Graham,Teo
DT (4) Bunkley,PAtterson,Dixon,Laws (J Owens to Practice Squad)
ILB (3) Bradley, Gaither, Cheney
OLB (4) Sims,Jordan,Clayton,White
CB (5) Samuel,Hobbs,Hanson,Lindley, Patterson
S (4) Mickell, Allen, Demps, Coleman
Abriami remains on PUP list and then to IR and is not a factor for 2010 and quite possibly ever again.
Fokou,Sapp are cut M Harris gets a mysterious injury and placed on IR (to hide him for a season)
That’s it for now
I hope to see better special teams play especially on kick coverage. Giving the defense poor field position is not the intended result. The depth of our kickoffs is a little short. I don’t think the little guy from Air Force is going to be an upgrade in the return game if he is kept. This upcoming game will be a test for the offense and defense. I hope to see better redzone offense and a pass rush. Tomorrow night will tell a lot about the team’s progress.
Regarding linebacker Simms, I remember Matt Millen saying he hit so hard he sometimes knocked himself out. Words of football wisdom.
Millen must have done that to himself a few times as a player, for once he became GM, he lost his marbles on some of his 1st Round Draft Selections.. Words of Wisdom, Let it Be….
Phillywill, good god man, you are seriously the biggest douche on this board. You remind me of that jackass that everyone hated in high school and college. Do you ever contribute anything of substance about the Eagles? All you do is bash them and make sarcastic comments. We all realize the Eagles, as of today, don’t look like a superbowl caliber team but we still route for them and have hope that they will surprise us.
btc24…give PW a break, he has taken the McNabb trade hard. He can get negative at times but can also add some good insight. Let the season begin so we can actually start talking about games and players performances before you write him off.
Well said greenfan…
Thats some good stuff right there greenfan..peaceful, insightful and wise. But yeah btc24..pw’s a douche, no doubt.
