Not Manning, Favre Or Brees, Brady Is The QB That Kolb Should Emulate

While thinking about what awaits Andy Reid’s football team and his young quarterback Kevin Kolb, I thought about which quarterback currently playing in the NFL that I would like to see him emulate and the guy that jumps at me isn’t Peyton Manning, Brett Favre or Drew Brees, it’s Tom Brady.

I’m always surprised when I don’t hear Brady’s name come up, when NFL fans and experts are talking about the NFL’s best quarterbacks.  I thought it was all about winning Super Bowls, Brady has won three of them.  Is there another quarterback in the NFL who can say that?

Brady is the most disciplined of all NFL quarterbacks.  He plays to win.  He’ll throw the ball 50 times to win or he’ll throw the ball 20 times to win.  If he’s got a good defense and nothing’s there on a play, he’ll throw the ball away.

I’m amazed that I haven’t seen his ego get in the way of winning a ball game. I can’t say the same about most of the other big name quarterbacks.  I think he’s the best at executing a winning game plan in a big game.

Brady is still the guy I would want to hand the ball to in a big game.  I’d like to see Kolb emulate Brady this year and the way this future Hall of Famer puts winning above everything else.

It was Brady and Bill Belichick who I thought about when looking over and thinking about the best way for Reid and Kolb to handle their business this year as they try develop a young quarterback and win at the same time.

Yes, you can begin by letting a young quarterback throw the ball all over the place, but if you want to win now, you teach him to take care of the football and gradually loosen the restraints.  Belichick, Brady and the Pats have shown they’re willing to throw on every down if that’s what it takes to win.

In a way, I’m not just talking about Kolb, I’m also talking about Andy Reid.  If the Eagles indeed have a good defense as we’ve seen in training camp and in the preseason, the wise thing to do would be to stay away from the high wire act and keep the kid out of too many must pass situations, while throwing the ball around 30 times a game.

Look at Brett Favre, he’s got all the records but after being a starting quarterback for 18 years, yet he has one Super Bowl title.  I hear people rave about what a great year he had a year ago, but that season ended for the Vikes in the NFC Championship game after he threw a costly interception.

He is the classic throw the ball all over the place quarterback, who has taken all that time to finally realize a year ago, that you don’t win by throwing for a million yards and throwing costly interceptions.  He has thrown away more playoff games than he has won.

As great as Manning is, and he is a great quarterback, he’s played twelve years and won only one Super Bowl.

Brees is entering his ninth season as a starter and went to his first Super Bowl a year ago.

Think about it, Brady is entering his 11 year in the league.  He sat the bench for a year and missed another one with a knee injury.  He has played eight seasons as the starting quarterback of the Patriots and he’s been to four Super Bowls, won three and lost one.  Even in the one the Pats lost, Brady had them in the game with a minute to go, because he wouldn’t throw the ball up for grabs.

Brady is the guy to emulate because he’s the biggest winner in the NFL.

G:

I couldn’t even read passed Reid calling 30 passes a game. To change my view on Reid, he’d have to hand the ball off more than he does. But any discussion of that is groundless to this point of his administration. I’d love to see more of Eldra Buckley, frankly. Seems like he gets unleashed in the back field more than running a play. The only way that happens is because McCoy needs a breather from running alot, and Weaver and Buckley share the load on some plays. But that’s day-dreaming, G. Show me the running!!!

I disagree about Tom Terrific about being the best Current NFL QB
2-3 years ago before his injury, I would say hands down he was the best, but not anymore..
Saints D Brees is the best right now and has been over the last season or 2 and will probably be again this year with all the weapons, talent, play calling, that the Saints have plus playing 1/2 games in that Dome is a huge advantage to the Saints where many a opposing QB have rough outings with the noise..
As far as watching footage of all the great QB’s like Montana,Brady,Manning,Marino,Fouts,Moon, etc, etc,… the one thing in common they all have is having great footwork and nimble feet (besides an accurate arm)
I believe the next Football Stadium thats built for the Eagles in 2030 (by Mrs Lurie) will be named
the Kevin Kolb Stadium…

nsidious…..” I’d love to see more of Eldra Buckley, frankly.”

Come on. The guy is an ok back-up. I also want to see more of a run game (as does most every birds-fan after years of the pass happy offense run by big red), but you want more of your best running back, not a backup that is doubtful to make the team (chances are that Mike Bell is the back-up to Shadey and Buckley doesn’t even make the team).

Yes, agree, show me the running. But do it with our best backs.

I say keep The Hammer Mallett (I know it’s pronounced Ma-Lay) he looked good and has a chance to shine again tomorrow night.

@Pauly, We should build a dome with a retractable roof that way we can still let the weather in and just name it “The Nest” however I think my old High School has already changed their name from Henry C Morgan Stadium to Kolb Field…

This 1st half versus the Bengals Friday will be the best Defense that the Eagles face until they play the
Redksins in week #4. The Bengals have a very active LB groups (R Mulauaga,K Rivers, and yes Dhani Jones) plus the best CB Tandem in the entire NFL in James Joseph and Leon Hall so it will be very interesting to watch how Kolb reads the coverages and how the WR/TE/RB’s can get out free into their routes… Both teams Starters will play approx the 1st half.. If you only watch 1 Pres-Season Game this year and you really want to get the sense of this Eagles team for 2010, then watch the 1st half versus the Bengals Friday eve and we should learn a lot about this Team (on both sides of the ball)

Man these threads are brutal lol whats with all the bucley haters. This kid has done nothing but play his ass off since we got him. As far as mallet yes he has looked good so far BUT you know what your getting with buckly. Granted he is a C running back maybe B quality in certain situations but the kid is a flat pout stud on speacial teams. Mallet has shown me nothing on specail teams nor do i honestly even know if he plays special teams.id take buckly as our third string any day. And cant really argue to much with the article. I think that knee hindered Brady quite a bit but i would still give him the edge over brees and manning and not just for the three rings. The dude has always had decent waepons but he makes most stuff happens on his own.

Ill take manning anyday over any of those QB’s……. Superbowls are a team sport. Manning has litterally carried his team all season every season. But the TEAM is not good enough to win in the playoffs. There defense has always been suspect. Thats why mannings playoff record isnt as good. In the playoffs one man cant carry it. Manning did all the way to the superbowl last year. But saints were a better team!

Yes, and as Birdobeamen pointed out – THEY FRICKIN CHEATED! I can’t believe people in Philly still gloss over that. THEY CHEATED AGAINST US IN THE SUPERBOWL! That team was a fraud and they have been bad, with the exception of that 16-0 season which only put them equal with us when we lost the superbowl. Frankly, I think the spygate thing tainted any Brady accomplishments that suggested he is excellent. He’s definitely a good Qb, probably top 15, but without cheating, he’s not that amazing at all.

I have too agree with Gary. If you look at how long these other guys have been in the league compared too Toms tenure,i’d take him over the rest with the game on the line. Manning won a title cause the NFC flat out stunk that year.BEARS WITH REXY! That soft version of the Saints. Come on? And the backs won the game for him with check off after check off. Hey it’s a title so i won’t hate,i’m wishing for one in 10′. And look at how he choked last year in the bowl. Don’t give me the db made a nice play…ok…how come Reggie and Manning didnt make a better one. Brees..i like his game alot but i wouldnt rank him over Tom.Brees having a title makes him a legit superstar but im putting him there with Rivers.Kolb has the moxy…but he has alot too prove and has some big shoes too fill. Regardless of coming up short of a title,Don is the greatest q in Birds history. It’s a show me league…show me your on that level.

Eagles need to keep an eye on the Waiver wire for another RB
I don’t mthink M bell is motivated enough or a godo fit for the EAgles…
Buckley is hard-woker but doesn’t have the size, speed to make people miss or outrun anyone
I hope draft choice C Scott gets some carries this week to see what he can do..if C Scott does not look like he’s ready, then Eagles need to pick-up a veteran RB who is versatile and can catch, run & block… Check out 2 RB’s that are buried on the depth chart for the Panthers behind Williams and Stewart and Goodson, I ve been watching these 2 all camp and like what I see.
Tyrelle Sutton is more a scat back 5’9 215 lbs and built like a young B Westbrook
Josh Vaughn is a monster at 6’1 230 lbs who moves the pile and had a great career at the University of Richmond, both these guys won’t make the Panthers 53 man roster but could be a good fit for the Eagles off the waiver wire..

QB (3) Kolb,Vick,Kafka
RB (3) McCoy,Bell and ? (Mallet or Buckley or possibly another player off a waiver wire)
FB (1) L Weaver
WR (6) D-Jax,Maclin,Avant,Cooper,Washington,& Hall
TE (3) Celek, Harbor and a veteran off waiver wire (Ingram gets a mysertious injury and placed on IR to hide him for 1 more season of Rehab)
OL (9) Peters,Herremans,Jackson,Andrews,Justice,Cole,MJG,McGlynn & Howard

With WR’s Washington & Cooper, problably LB’s Clayon,Cheney,White,Gaither Safety’s Coleman & Demps TE Harbor, CB’s Patterson,Lindley,Hanson and DL Teo,Parker,Tapp,Laws ..
How many Special Teamers do you need…
I would rather have a C Hall make the squad since he offers versatility in returns, coverage teams, at WR and maybe a little RB.. What’s Baskett going to provide moving forward.. I always thought his Specail Teams play was way overrated and maybe part of that is that the Eagles didn’t have that many other good players on their Special Teams before.. Paulman, agreed on Baskett, but I don’t think cutting baskett means they keep Hall. I understand you points on hall, and agree that sounds nice, but I also think the Eagles want to get Cooper involved in the offense, that basically means that you’d have to dress him, and I doubt you’d be able to dress 6 WRs – they never do that for gamedays. It just seems unlikely to me that Hall makes the team.

To Schiller,
I think Eagles only carry 3 OT (Peters,Justice,Howard) since they can utilize Herremans at LT if something were to happen to Peters, they have plenty of depth at Guard with Andrews,Herremans,MJG and N Cole and even McGlynn all able to play the Guard spot)
If J Jackson is good to go by the regular season (which we don’t know yet but I am leaning that he will be) than I think the Eagles only carry 9 O/Lineman. If Jackson has a setback then they may have to carry 10 OL , which means OT Dunlap probably makes the roster and they reduce the WR position from 6 to 5 which means C Hall goes to Practice Squad and does not make the big squad…
A lot of the final roster make-up for the O/Line will hinge on whether J Jackson is a go or not…

Minus the some of the deep passing Brees has in him that’s the only guy Kolb can really attempt to model himself after without trying to completely transform himself and style of play (which always fails.) Brady isn’t really discussed ALL of the time with the best QBs because his whole career has been mired scandal, backroom deals etc.

Drew Bledsoe was traded for him (6th round pick, 2nd year player) to start which made no sense until years later when the Patriots were exposed as cheats. Then the year Brady had an overwhelming amount of talent on offense they won all of the regular season games and lost the SuperBowl. There are, understandably, a lot of suspicious ideas floating around about Tom Brady and his success. I don’t think anyone would say that he’s a bad QB, but there’s so much stuff floating around the guy it’s difficult to say too much about him. Even having said that I still think most people view him as a top 5 QB.

schiller

See Paulman, that’s the thing – you’re saying that behind our starting O tackles, you have an undrafted rookie (sure, I’m excited that he looks so good in camp… ), and that’s it!? Herremans has proven he can stay healthy…uh… when? What if Herremans misses time? Then you have to fill in his spot at Guard. And then what if peters gets banged up – that happened last year, both of them down a bit, then you have VERY LITTLE to work with. We’ll see, but you’re suggesting nothing but an undrafted rookie at an extremely important position to have backups for…..

schiller
schiller
August 19, 2010 10:00 pm

As for the Brady stuff – look, the guy had a solid run game and great D (made to look much better by all the cheating), and a very good coach (made to look better by all the cheating), basically a pretty complete ‘system’ around him, (save for WRs, go figure, he has less success with the great WR corp…). That’s why Brady isn’t the automatic #1 QB in the conversation, because Manning has been consistent no matter what was around him. The great D came around and he got a SB, but Brady isn’t that great all on his own.

Paul Mancini
Paul Mancini
August 19, 2010 10:53 pm

To Butch,
Brady was a 6th Round Draft pick by New England while Bledsoe was the Pats #1 QB.
once Bledso was injured, then Brady, who was a 2nd year player by that time, took over and never reliquished the Starter’s Position, then Bledso was traded to Buafflo BIlls that off-season.

To Schiller
Who do you think the Eagles keep along the O/Line,
I can see a scenario they they keep both Dunlap & Howard as the back-up OT’s,
then who else do you cut on the Offense if you carry 10 OL… Do you only keep 2 TE’s or 5WR’s..
What’s your thoughts on this…

Gcobb, You are exactly right. Favre example is key. I hope Eagles O-line and Running game is good. This wins most Superbowls. Emmit ran through us. Eagles would have beaten Patriots with a running game. Patriots took the game over with Dillon.Garcia threw costly interception in 07 playoffs(I believe that was also the game where Eagles were 3 and 1 and of course passed and failed ) Should have won that game. Vikes and Colts would both have beaten Saints if they ran the ball more in the 4th but both ended with costly inteceptions. Teams are too pass happy. Two questions. Will we have a good running game? and most important…. Will Reid use it?

Pman, it’s pretty simple in my book – they either cut Hall or Ingram. They were absolutely fine at the TE spot last year with Celek and, well they barely needed smith. Unless they can stash Ingram on IR again, I say they would cut him or hall. I don’t think hall makes it first off. But who knows? They could keep baskett for all we know. I just doubt they go light at backup OT position – that’s a bad risk to take.

Paul Mancini
Paul Mancini

I don’t think you can expect to have Celek be the ony legitimate target at TE for the whole season
He took a lot of nasty shots last year and Harbor is not really a true TE.. I think they place Ingram on IR
to stash for 1 more and go out and get a veteran TE to help in the Redzone or Blocking in running formations in 2 TE sets.
Schiller, who do think or like to make the the roster along the O/Line.. (9 or 10 and which players)
