Eagles Trade Rookie RB Scott To Cards For Rookie CB Calvin

Anybody who is familiar with the way Andy Reid uses his running backs, knew that LSU rookie running back, Charles Scott was going to be a long shot to make this football team.

When the OTA’s started the Eagles coaching staff worked with him diligently concerning his pass catching and route running skills.   They knew he was starting out far behind in regards to the passing game, so they were trying to get him caught up.

He was big power back like the Eagles under Reid don’t seem to value.  To no one’s surprise Scott was traded to day by the Birds to the Arizona Cardinals for cornerback Jorrick Calvin who was also drafted this year.

The LSU Tigers ask their running backs to run hard and courageous but they don’t ask them to catch the football.  Scott came here with a tremendous disadvantage.  He didn’t know much about catching the football or running routes.

Scott quickly showed us that he couldn’t catch the football, consistently.  He fought with the ball more than catching it.  He also struggled to pick up the terminology.  I saw something in Scott’s troubles, that I’ve seen for years when players try to transition from a simple college system to a much more complicated system in the NFL.

His mental struggles in mastering the system sapped his aggressiveness to the point where he wasn’t even running hard with the football any more.  Anybody that saw this kid in college knows this young man knows how to run hard.   He wasn’t even doing that.  Every knew he wasn’t going to be here too much longer.

Colvin was a sixth round draft choice of the Cardinals.  From what I can see of this rookie corner is that he has good size.  He looked like a safety when I saw how big he was.

He also has kickoff return ability.  I think his height and return ability was what got Eagles GM Howie Roseman’s eye.   Currently the Eagles have two quality kickoff return guys on the squad, Ellis Hobbs and Quintin Demps.

Hobbs is the starting right corner, so they wouldn’t mind relieving him of that responsibility if they were able to without having a big dropoff in the effectivenss of their kickoff returns.  Demps is a quality return man but they have no faith in him as a safety.  He makes too many mistakes and isn’t getting any better.

Calvin’s size is attractive to the Eagles because they know the NFC East is stocked with nothing but big and physical wide receivers.  The Birds need more size at the cornerback position to counteract that size.

If this young man can return kicks and show promise at cornerback, it will totally eliminate any chances of Demps has of keeping his job here in Philadelphia.

By moving Macho Harris back to the safety position, the Eagles front office put Demps on the outside looking in and the arrival of more competition isn’t a good thing for him.  I see Demps being released and picked up by another team which values his return skills, more than the Eagles do.

Wasn’t Demps Dawks replacement?

We were told how Demps progression helped the FO make the hard decision to allow Dawk into Free Agency.

if that was so, maybe this years picks could have been used to actually help in other places of need.

A very good move,
I like C Scott but unfotunately the Eagles don’t run the ball enough to warrant carrying a big back
who would be good in shiort-yardage,red zone situations (they’ll use the highest-paid FB off all-time L Weaver for that)
This move tells me a few more moves are on the way…

#1) Return Man/6th WR Chad Hall will not make the 53 Man roster.
#2) I think the Eagles will now trade Nickle Back J Hanson with another player or draft picks to the
Baltimiore Ravens (who are desperate for DB’s) for unhappy OLineman J Gaither
The Ravens also lost 3rd WR D Stallworth for 2 months with a broke foot and may be intersted in
re-acquiring WR/ST K Washington back since he is familiar with the Ravens system
#3) M Harris will be the 4th Safety (behind Mickell,Allen,Coleman) and Q Demps will be released

Ha Songs, yep they made a mistake with Demps. I think it’s hilarious though, that their first attempt to replace Dawkins, Cj Gaddis, was completely forgotten by everyone. Anyway, yeah, they f’d up in picking a great safety and didn’t really get a good replacement until now (Nate Allen). Suck it up, teams make mistakes at draft picks, and Reid and the Eagles staff are no worse than the other NFL franchises at it. You love to wallow in the ‘what if’s’ and ‘why can’t they just be perfect’s’ songs…. you’re wasting your time and only doing yourself harm. But suit yourself.

So we all knew C Scott was a power back and not the best pass catcher coming out of LSU. His hands are suspect at best so, why did we waste a draft pick on this guy in the first place?

Paulman – just because they traded for the rook doesn’t mean he’s the nickel CB now. Hanson is the starter at Nickle and the team likes him. They’re not trading Hanson. Kelly Washington makes the team because Reid and April love the guy. And I think Macho will not make the team, but Demps will. Just my opinion. But Paulman, you’re basing your predictions off of what would make the trade (because you love transactions more than anything else), not based on what the coaching staff tends to do and expresses. They love hanson and washington so I don’t see any reason they’d trade them. They just fit well into your trade fantasies, so you put them in.

Google the guy. This CB seems to be a good pickup. check out his Youtube punt return and the CBS sports (I think it was) scouting report – the guy seems like a viable return man and a good prospect to play like a lindley/asante hybrid – anticipates the ball, makes athletic leaps that are well timed, and shows good run support (ala LIndley, not samuel…)…. It’s worth a bit of optimism considering scott was a cut-to-be. Worst case scenario is we get to check this kid out and he doesn’t make the team. – high potential reward, essentially no cost.

***********Trade Alert and Roster Update ***************

Eagles Trade CB J Hanson and WR K Washington to the Baltimore Ravens OT J Gaither

Eagles then promote CB D Patterson and CB Trevor Lindley to the 3rd/4th DB’s and Nickle Backs in Dime packages.
The Eagles then release RG Stacey Andrews, and slide W Justice to RG and insert J Gaither at RT
once he is up to speed by week #3/#4.
The Eagles then utilize new CB J Colvin as the Kick-Off return guy and a back-up for Punt Returns
in the event that D-Jax gets hurt, dinged or just needs a break from returning Punts

schiller, After Hanson’s PED issue, he’s been below average. Don’t think they haven’t noticed. Patterson has shown that he can play on the inside and outside (started the Bears game and did good). Along with the fact that Patterson and Lindley have just out played Hanson this preseason, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him released, if not traded.

Ummm…McNabb not making the start of the season cause of injury not getting its own thread? As always the Eagle’s FO is one step ahead of the curve when it comes to dropping dead weight. Always.

I like the move. As everyone else said, Scott wasn’t making this team and at least they got something in return. What kind of player the CB is remains to be seen. It does sort of seem that as the injuries in the pre-season mount, some teams are desperate for a quality veteran and are more than happy to move their own dead weight in return. One team’s trash is another team’s gold in the NFL. Sometimes a player just doesn’t fit and fans misdiagnose this as the guy can’t play. Then he moves on to the right situation for the player and “magically” the guy can make an impact. It does kind of beg the question what the Eagles saw in Scott that made them take a chance on him. Hadn’t we already gone down this road with Tony Hunt? I admit that I have a lot of faith in the Eagles FO (I think their track record has proven that faith to be properly placed). However, they do come up with a few head scratchers and although I was hopeful to see something out of Scott, I am not left wondering…what were they thinking? No, not quite as bad as the year they went through an entire pre-season giving Jeremy Bloom every rep as the PR only to cut him and have no one else on the roster with PR experience, or the year they went into the season with Tony Hunt as their FB. Biggest head scratcher from last Friday’s game is why on EARTH are you running in the Pre-Season a WR screen with your most dangerous weapon on your team and perhaps the NFL (DJax) against a team that has an absolute WIG SPLITTER at the Safety position! Andy/Marty almost got DeSean killed last week from that hit by Eric Berry. WTF!

Vricchini, while I believe Reid makes things very hard for himself, he could luck up and win a bowl. Sometimes, luck is all you need.

Drum, as much as I would like to believe that, even if he does, it might not be with the birdz. He’s to nice for this city and fans all over. Were too passionate about our ball club and Reid isn’t. Not saying he doesn’t care, but if he gets offered more money and control elsewhere hell be gone in a minute. We need Cower and Rex Ryan attitudes around here. How many draft picks is he going to keep on wasting anyway? We never utilize the run. What does it matter, same ol same ol. We add depth and become better on defense, only to subtract from the offense and make the team even out to a mediocre team at best. Reid has no balance and he’s going to end up regretting the biggest trade of his coaching career (though i really hope that wont be the case) if we don’t come out swinging and winning. If it ain’t the offense, it’s the defense and vice versa. The same ol reid-morningweg year in and year out crap.

I am not a big AR fan, but do keep in mind that the decision to trade MCNAbb was not his but from
Banner/Roseman, who has actually been running the show as far as personnel anymore..
Since Ar had his Family issues, part of the deal was he giving up some duties so he could concentrate on Coaching and maintaing a staff sinec many have moved up for bigger and better things like
former coaches Childress,Harbaugh & Spagnula. The job of roster procurement whether thru Free-Agency,Draft,Undrafted Free-agents,etc,etc has been up to Banner/Roseman for the last 2 years. AR has always been loyal to his players and sometimes to a fault…Thats’s they way it’s set up I am ok with it, as long as AR improves his game planning and most importantly, his game-day on the field adjustments which I think he has always lacked in to be considedred an Elite Coach
The next head coach that Banner & CO hire will be a younger, no name guy who tows the copmany line and goes with the program, not a big ego type of Coach who wants control or has that TV type of Personality that a Gruden,Cowher,Dungy type have. The Eagles Front Office is a well-greased machinne and as long as the turnstiles and merchandise ar a churning and the $$$$ are rolling in,
they are not goign to cahnge one iota..

A draft choice Schiller was not crazy about, but now is correcting Paulman on spelling. Some coaches make more mistakes than others and are slower to recognize or admit them.
