Something Must Be Done At Right Guard, Cole Should Replace Andrews

The Eagles have a problems at their right guard position and it’s going to require a tough decision.  Starting guard Stacy Andrews isn’t getting the job done and I don’t know that he’s ever going to be able to get it done.

Andrews doesn’t seem to have recovered from his knee injury.  He doesn’t have any explosion when he hits opposing defenders.  The older brother of Shawn doesn’t move very well when they ask him to pull on run plays or get out in front of screens and pick up linebackers and defensive backs in space.

Andrews can’t get any movement when the Eagles run the ball.  He doesn’t seem to have the strength and movement in his knee to push big defensive linemen off the ball.   Andrews also struggles to pull and lead running backs around the corner on power plays and sweeps.

His lack of mobility makes it tough for him to get off the ball and block linebackers in a 3/4 defense.   In a 3/4, the two middle linebackers line up off the ball about four yards and head up on the guards.  They’re good athletes who can move, so it’s not easy for the offensive linemen to get to them, but misdirection in the backfield usually slows them down.  Unfortunately, Andrews can’t get to them even when they’re slowed down.

They’ve got to make a decision about this former Cincinnati Bengal.  If he doesn’t start he’s not the kind of guy you want backing up because he can only play one position.  He used to be able to play tackle but there’s no way he can do that with his limited mobility.

That brings us to Nick Cole, who got some work at the guard positions at yesterday’s practice.   He may be the answer at right guard, again.   He stepped in last year and did a good job at the position, until he had to move back to center when Jamaal Jackson went down.  I think he’s a better guard than he is a center.

Cole worked out yesterday with the football team as he recovered from knee swelling.  I don’t think it was a coincidence that he worked out at guard and not at center.   Cole missed just about all of the training camp, but he won’t have a problem getting up to speed at guard because he’s familiar with the position.

One of Cole’s strengths is his athleticism.  He does a good job of getting out in front of the screens and he can run very well.  He’s built low to the ground and is as strong as a bull.

Remember the Eagles made the playoffs last year with him at right guard, so expect to see him there again before too long.

Mike McGlynn has increased his value because he’s shown he can do a decent job at center and at guard.  The backups on the offensive line have to be versatile.

Bottomline of all this, don’t be shocked if they release Andrews.

Nawwwwwwwwww..we can’t release Stacy Andrews..We were told he was a great addition…Value at the position.

This cheap organization went after an injured fix..why?

They cost less……Pay a healthy player to come in during free agency and stop going after someone elses injured baggage.

I agree 100% G and have been stating this for the last 2 weeks, but I don’t really think it’s a difficult decision, Stacey has not lived up to his billing at all since the signed to an inflated Salary last year, I think he will get flat out released for they are not going to pay him his large salary to be a back-up
player.. Once J Jackson is back at Center, then Cole/MJG/McGlynn will all compete for the RG spot
N Cole is a much better Guard than Center…I would feel better with anyone of these 3 than Andrews.
The next move I see potenially down the pike is Tackle A Howard pushing RT Justice for playing time
I can see Howard replacing Justice sometime earley in the Season if Justice doesn’t pick up the pace but I think the real problems at Center and RT this preseason has been the fault of no blocking by Andrews at RG which has make the players either side of him have to do double work..

we need to pull a trade for Jared Gaither asap while he is on the trading block. I would give up a first for him.

P.S. LMFAO @ songs post. I love the sarcasm

To Songs,
Stacey Andrews did not come cheap, in fact, the Eagles way overpaid for his ability and talents.
Don’t fault them for being Cheap on this one, Fault them for being stupis or naiive in not doing enough homework on his playing abilities, work ethic and committment to being in the best of shape while playing for the Bengals…There is no doubt that Stacey was brought in to help be a calming effect and the hope of getting his brother Shawn Andrews committed back to playing football which didn’t work either… They took a risk and gambled and lost on this one, tim e to cut the chord and move forward with hungrier players who have more of an upside like N Cole,MJG, McGlynn…
on him

I agree that Cole is a better option at RG. He is a better guard than center, and certainly an upgrade compared to Andrews play for the birds.

Is no-one concerned about the irratic play of Peters? He is going to get Kolb killed.

Guards out there are the Disgruntled one up in New Englans who is looking for big $$$ (Mankins)

Alright, since the friggin panic button is been hit,the D-Valley is on Defcon 5 ,and the season is gonna be a total wash i think we should look at the positives. The negatives are obvious and will be worked on this week.

Stew is a beast..our run D is goin too be better. Cowboys…bring it.
Sante still is a bawhawking s.o.b…do what u want as long as u make those picks look effortless.(Busch league refs)
Kolb can get it done and some of his throws seem easy.Mac will learn from the drops.
Mccoy runs hard and i think Bell will run even harder.
Short yardage,Weaver bllloommcrackilackah!!! Good sign?

No,bringing Jon Runyan back is not an option. They will sign noone and will roll with the soldiers they have. Give the Eagles a week too prepare for a teams blitz packages and that doesnt happen. it’s preseason. Yes they coulda been better, but i think it will look better week1. My opinion. And Joe Banners shirt looked like a dishrag. Dudes paid out the frame and he cant wear a polo thats crispy? He is a such a d-bag. Everything about him says…d-bag.

Banner’s personal dress code doesn’t get squat done on the field. Runyan is not coming back; he’s into the political scene now/future. He’s always had a strong interest in govt.

Every year people go berserk with what they see in pre-season. Relax. If the Eagles go 6-10, we get nice higher draft picks (though I think this team will markedly improve in 2nd half assuming no major injuries. Incidentally, a big, rousing BOOOOO on an 18-game season!! Terrible deal for all players’ longevity/health.

Well they bought Trotter back after he was out the league for like 2-3 years and he had a few business. I wouldnt count it out if this becomes a situation where Andrews is cut. I remember a post that Gary had about how our Defensive front was dominating our O line and the thought came up was our D line that good or was our O line just that bad. I think these last few games gave us our answer.

PW its going to be a long season. I do think we can beat the packers
but looking at history we never win our first preseason game. Why is that?
do you think its how we approach our preseason games?
is it because we always start off on the road?

Not too much interest for the white guys in the NBA PW..
They can’t run,or jump…
On New Addition J Calvin from the Arizona Cardinals in a trade for RB C Scott..
He’s 5’11” about 185lbs and can run, he’s more of a Nickle back but does have experience in
Kick-off/Punt returns which tells me 2 things..
#1) C Hall does not make the final Roster.
#2) I expect a trade of nickle CB J Hanson to the Batlimore Ravens over the next 48 hours and may inclue a draft pick or WR (since Stallworth is out) for a package of OT J Gaither from the Ravens

I will keep all posted from what I hear..

I dont think Shady will ever be a good back because what brian westbrook did well was catch the screen pass and line up at WR. Shady cant do that from what im seeing. all though he has potential I dont think we he can thrive in our offense.

yeah chad hall is getting cut for sure. If we do trade for Jared we would have to give him a new contract. I think he’s holding out in b more. If it came down to it if the ravens said we want one of your WR’s I would say take your choice besides Desean Jackson with Hanson and its a done deal. Too bad we could have gotten him in 2007 in the 5th round

Brian Westbrook is not a guarantee to make the 49ers in the first place, and he’s 3rd or 4th on the depth chart there. And as far as what has shady done special, well the rookie rushing record for the franchise is one thing. Watch out for Shady, I’m not objective on this, I’m a Pitt alumn so I’ll give you that, but he is a better inside the tackles running back than Westbrook ever was – just a different player alltogether. Shady will be Shady – not another Westbrook. And as for him catching screen passes – he’s really good at that, just not when Kolb has 0 time and the Oline stinks it up – Kolb miffed the throws to Shady v. KC the other night because the Oline miffed the protections/screen manuevers. It’s the OL problem. Shady will be more than fine, if the line can at least be average.

To PW,
Westbrook already did play for the Eagles for many years, his time was done
Players are not going to rework their contracts for less $$$ to return to a team just like most teams
are not going to re-work a plyers contract once he’s under under contract..
It is what it is, Westbrook is one damaging hit away from serious issues with his head/brain and I hope he stats healthy
Did anyone see Westbrook give some of that $$ back for all the games he missed over the last 2 seasons … of course not…

Ah yes, Pillywrilly will only be satisfied by an all-star lineup for a franchise – because it’s not only ideal, but it’s practicle and realistic. He can list a bunch of teams that have ‘starters’ according to him, at every position.

phillywill….your callin Mccoy a back up? Kolb a back-up? Hobbs a back-up?

Only back who even comes close too the entire package Shady is is Feliz Jones.Division wise.
Kolb is not a back up toolshed.
Plenty of lines in the NFL have back up level guys on it. We’re no different. And last time i checked we’re getting healthy.
Thats what 4th and 5th corners do,compete to be a nickel.
Seriously,Mccoy is a back up who we got in the 2nd round and rushed for howmany yards in his rookie year. The dude has skills.
Stop being a homer and holding onto Westy and Don. Beasley Reeses interview…wtf cares?

I do like his moxy, his confidence, and his accuracy. Are you still writing D-nab too see if he’ll come back too town or are you gonna cry like a f’n old women all season about not having him.Scouts and gm’s around the league would tell you Mccoy is a bonafide starter. So do some research before you start spewing your negative garbage.IN run on sentence form i may add. Jeezz sonion….use a period. LMAO….kiddin me dude.Do you text lol too your friends when they make you chuckle?Dude your a negative Philly sap like the rest of them.

Right now Mccoy IS better then all but one back in the division in my opinion. I base my opinions on research and factual evidence. Like those bums did jack last year. Portis body of work is in the past? Brandon Jacobs?Dude.Barber…nice player. Gets hurt cause he runs like a bull.

Philly Will’s logic for claimina guy is a starter – he is fully established in his career and is proven to be a well known name that Philly Will recognizes as a great FB player. Formula for a rookie becoming this – warp the rules of time so that a rookie can be a seasoned vet with years of seasons and stats to impress Philly Will. Yeah that’s right, if the Eagles got the first 10 picks in a draft and did a great job of chosing them, he would claim that 10 starting players on the team are atrocious because they aren’t ‘starters’ in his opinion.
