As predicted by everyone, Team USA made it out of pool play undefeated. However, they did encounter a slight bump in the road when they faced Brazil (USA 70, Brazil 68), but other than that game there hasn’t been too many problems for team USA.
But now they enter the quarterfinals, where the competition will be somewhat harder for this very young team. The next squad that stands between them and the finish line is Team Russia. The Russians are playing excellent defense right now and have the ability to play man-to-man defense along with a matchup zone. Granted, Team USA has guys like Eric Gordon and Kevin Durant who can hit a jumper, but if one had to choose between allowing the Americans to shoot jumpers or giving them lanes into the paint, they would choose the former.
The Russians are a solid team that has a lot of size. Of course, they do lack the big names and star power, but they still exude tremendous passion with their gutsy resiliency. The Russians should look to try and attack Lamar Odom and company with 7’1″ Timofey Mozgov (who will be a rookie for the New York Knicks next season). Mozgov is skilled and knows how to use his size effectively. Against New Zealand, he finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
With all that being said, the Americans should be able to withstand whatever team Russia throws at them. Yes, they lack size, but they have excellent guard play, and are also guaranteed to have the best player on the court anytime Durant checks in.
America should look to use their extreme speed and athletic ability to their advantage. The fast break/transition baskets should be their best friend after the quarterfinal matchup. They are more talented and have the best coaching staff in the entire tournament. However, if they take Russia lightly, they may find themselves coming home sooner rather than later.
Look for Team USA to advance to semifinals after Thursday’s match with Russia. However, if they struggle with Russia’s big men, look for their next opponent, either Lithuania or Argentina to try to finish what Russia may start.
I am pulling for Russia,
They have better women’s tennis players than the US…
