Can Michael Vick Really Run The West Coast Offense From The Pocket?

The Eagles chances this Sunday and in the near future of the Eagles, along with Michael Vick’s future in the NFL all revolve around one question.  Can Michael Vick consistently and properly run the west coast offense from the pocket?

Andy Reid says he couldn’t do it in 2005 when the Eagles kept him in the pocket and for the most part shut him down when the Birds played the Falcons in the 2005 NFC Championship game.  Reid believes through focused hard work over the past year, Vick has developed to the point where he can stand in the pocket and run the offense.

“We did corral him (talking about the NFC Championship game), so it’s important that he focuses in on being in that pocket and throwing the football, and he’s done that since he’s got here”, Reid told an auditorium full of media yesterday. “He’s really handled that very well. I feel very comfortable with him, if he doesn’t have to run, standing right there and playing the game.”

“I will tell you the system that we’re running here, he’s done very well at picking it up and he’s working very hard”, Reid explained. “Not only condition-wise, I think you saw that part on Sunday, but also just the fundamentals of playing the position. Getting back into the swing of building a nice, solid platform that he can throw from and be consistent with his throws and his reads and film study and all the things that are very important to playing the quarterback position in this system right here.”

Vick talked about how he has tried to develop his all-around quarterback skills, while focusing on the fundamentals.  “Well, since the day I got here I’ve been working as hard as I can and as diligently as I can to just try to get better”, Vick told a media throng at his locker. “You want to strive to be great and you want to be perfect. We all know that you can’t be perfect, but you can strive for perfection. That’s what we try to do as players and that’s the ultimate goal. You give yourself the best chance to perform on a consistent basis when you do that.”

Vick’s been working tirelessly on his footwork and throwing motion since he .  It’s starting to pay dividends.

“I think, as far as accuracy, I’ve gotten better in that department”, Vick said yesterday. “I still have a lot of work to do. I still have the tendency sometimes stand too tall in the pocket and not bend my knees when I throw. So, as a quarterback, you’re always a work in progress. There are always things you can get better on and you just have to have the attitude and the fortitude to want to get better.”

The Lions are probably going to run defenses which dare Vick to beat them from the pocket.  They’re not going to try to duplicate what happened to Green Bay in the second half of last week’s game.  Many times it forces team into a standard zone defense.

Blitzing, which is usually accompanied by man coverage and straight man-to-man defenses require the secondary to be focused on the man their covering, which prevents them from coming up and making plays on scrambling quarterbacks.  The secondary is focused on the quarterback in zone defenses.

That’s why most defensive coordinators play much more zone against guys like Vick.  Most of the time, they can’t force themselves to play man-to-man and run the risk of seeing a speedy quarterback getting outside contain and running down the sidelines with the football, while their secondary has their back turned in pass coverage and has no knowledge of what’s going on behind them

Still Vick will have to prove to everyone that he can consistently within a matter of a few seconds, recognize the pre-snap reads. Identify the coverage he’s facing.  Make adjustments in the blocking and the formation they’re in.  Then get the ball snapped, drop in the pocket, slide to avoid pressure, yet keep his head down field, while finding the open receiver and delivering him the football.

Reid and Vick says he’s developed to the point where he can now do all of that play after play, now we will all find out if they’re telling us the truth.

If you want to get up to the minute reports on how Vick is doing in practice today, tomorrow and each afternoon, find me on twitter at Garry Cobb and on Facebook at GCobb.com.

We will see. McNabb wasn’t a traditional WCO QB and I think he did well even with his flaws. This offense is built to be explosive and strikes down the field. Not little short dump off plays every down. With Vick in there they need to go back to calling plays where Vick can utilize his strong arm and make plays down the field with Maclin and Jackson and Celek up the middle.

I heard Coach Andy and MM have the following 3 plays scripted to open this week’s game
The Eagles receive the ball first and have a great kick-off return by Hobbs to the Lions 25 yd line.

1st Down play) Vick in shotgun, then goes in motion, bull is snapped to new fullback O Schmitt who attempt to pass downfield to a streaking wide-open D-JAx.. (ball falls approx 20 yards short)
2nd Down play) Kafka comes in and takes the snap who throws to ball back to WR Vick who then throws the ball back to Kafka who then gets tackled for a 12 yard loss by Suh and gets injured on the play.
3rd Down play) Vick in shotgun, pitches back to Maclin who was in motion and then stops and punts the ball into the end-zone give the ball to the Lions at their 20

Good Grief.. I could be a O/C for this team….

I would think we could see more roll-outs for Vick, that would play to his strengths. Allow him to keep mobile as well as letting plays develop. Suh and VDB played really well last week, VDB had something like 11 tackles and Suh had a sack and a bunch of pressures, he’s everything we heard he was. OLine will have their hands full come Sunday.

Paul…w..t..f.. and I know you’re joking. I’ve been wondering something and maybe some one here can illuminate me a bit…If we have John Dorenboss (sic) as a long snapper..can’t he play center as well? Might take a bit of coaching but he knows how to snap and block right? I understand the center needs to be a bit smarter about blitz pick up however..did we even try to coach him up?

by mixing it up i meant run sometimes stay in pocket and go through your progressions sometimes
just dont get tunnel vision and either want 2 stay in the pocket to much or vice versa want to take off and run every play
basically mix it up

To WWW,
Donebros only goes about 250 lbs and is not physically big or strong enough to play C at the NFL level
(he would get killed to be honest with you)
Suh had 2 sacks by the way in his debut.
I would expect the Lions to HAve VDB play RDE and stay wide when rushing versus VIck forcing him to stay in the pocket.. Everyone knows that Vick as a lefty loves to roll out to his left so the Lions will prepare and force him to his right as much as possible

Just to put it out there — I will support Mike Vick in becoming our new starting QB if, and only if, he plays well enough to win in these next couple of game(s). If he does, then I have no problems with him being my fav. teams new QB. If he doesn’t, there’s no reason to throw three years of preparation down the drain (Kolb) based on one half of football.

listen listen vick will be good at the qb spot we do have to mix it up with a good run pass ratio. if we look like when jeff garcia was starting for us a few years back than you what… andy reid will stop all that and say “you know what guys”, “we look wayyyy to balance out there”! lets go back to 80/20 football and we’ll lose it by 1yrd.”! and when kolb comes back healthy we’ll let him pass it for 0yrds for the whole first half”! Because andy reid doesnt have a killer instinct!!! i call him smokey the bear because he prevents destruction!!!

Vicks arm is the right match for the speed of our recievers. We can now include the big play in our option to become the threat to opposing defenses before Mcnabb chose to become a pocket passer. Cunninghan, Mcnabb, now Vick…what excitement…We just need the right coach to put this together…and we can ship Kolb the hell out of here.

Now we have an exciting team

schill, why all the doom and gloom? Remember when you asked me to just get on board and enjoy the season and stop being so negative? I’m on board buddy.

Come with us to support Michael Vick as a team leader and get our team in the winning column. That’s the least we can do after that atrocius first half of ball exhibited by “diaper boy” last Sunday.

Ha songs, I shouldn’t take your bait but I will.

First, my comment wasn’t doom and gloom, at all. So nice try, but bad aim. Paulman makes up BS news that hears from ‘sources’ that pertains to eagles players, real situations, and often injuries. If you don’t get offended by him making up ‘news’ about how are injured players are injured far worse than the reports and facts say they are, that’s troubling and if it isn’t troubling to you, then who da hell ARE you rooting for.? In the past he’s done it and people believe him.\

Anyway, as for your second and entirely unrelated paragraph, I AM on board with Vick and for our team to get in the winning column for the detroit game. Vick is the best QB we have available for the detriot game so of course I’m on board for that. I’m not on board with your negative, hating of Kolb and you’re jumping to conclusions against what all the analysts and experts say. I’m not for your divisive BS either.
