With Vick In Lineup And Kolb On Sidelines, McNabb’s Return Is More Complicated

Donovan McNabb-haters dreamed of the day when they would have a classic west coast offense in place, who would be able to clearly demonstrate McNabb’s deficiencies in the offense with the former Eagles quarterback playing on the other side of the field.

They thought Kevin Kolb was the right guy, but he flopped miserably in the role as McNabb’s predecessor, so Andy Reid had to replace him with of all people, Michael Vick.  Yes, the notorious Michael Vick.

Now McNabb will return, but the situation is too complicated for McNabb-haters to enjoy.  They’re not crazy about Vick and some are still mourning the castastrophe of Kolb experiment.

Reid has been expressing nothing but love and appreciation for McNabb, which is destroying the revenge image of the game.  He wouldn’t give the media anything to run with for McNabb’s return to Philadelphia.

You know Reid still feels a connection to McNabb, but he was honest when he said he doesn’t have any time for emotions.  The head coach has to get his football team ready for the Redskins.

“Listen, you can’t devote all your time into one person in this profession and in this sport”, Reid told reporters. “It’s a team sport. It’s not a great grudge-match sport, or any of that, that’s not what it’s about. It’s about going through the process, exhausting that process of all the situations and the personnel that you’re going to play against, and that takes all your time if you do it the right way, and you don’t just focus in on one guy. That’s not how this thing works.”

Reid also refused to say whether Eagles fans would cheer or boo McNabb.

This game was supposed to be McNabb versus Kolb. The fact that Kolb couldn’t keep the starting job and was unable to perform in the place that McNabb occupied for more than a decade, takes away some of the luster of the game.  If it were just Kolb and McNabb, everyone would compare those two quarterbacks and that would be the story.

The fact that it will be McNabb versus Vick with Kolb on the sidelines changes the story of the game.  It makes it more complicated and takes away some of the emotion.  The fact that McNabb helped to bring Vick to Philadelphia makes him a good guy in this scenario.

Is the number one story McNabb’s return to Philadelphia or is it Vick’s return to stardom?

Here in Philadelphia, the number one story is McNabb’s return, but in the country, it’s Vick’s return to stardom.

Kolb was supposed to be the anti-McNabb, who would show everybody the way to run the west coast offense.  Instead he showed that McNabb was able to produce behind an offensive line that wasn’t up to par.

This was supposed to be a happy time for McNabb-haters instead they don’t know what to think or who to boo.

McNabb will be cheered upon his return. Maybe not this return, but it will happen.

He never embarrassed the organization or the city. He won games and got the Eagles as far as they have ever gone. There will always be a group of haters and it rotates from game to game. With the pain of the Dallas lost still fresh in my mind, for a short while I wanted him or Andy gone. Somebody had to pay. Just like Jaws, Randall and Dick Vermeil. Give the Eagle fans some time and they not only will take you back, they will love you with all their hearts.

I’m cheering for McNabb. He did more than his share to win a championship. The coaches, front office and other members of the team came up short. Trent Dilfer isn’t anywhere near the QB Donovan was for this team and he won a Superbowl. If Donovan had begun his career with the team we have now (and an upgraded offensive line), he would have certainly won Superbowls.

We all knew Kolb was garbage and didn’t understand why Mcnabb was traded until the “bait and switch”. Reid knew all along if Kolb didn’t progress in his decision making Vick would eventually be his man. Kolb makes the whole team worse and while the national media would have loved to bury Philly as the national primetime media view another episode of “SCARED STRAIGHT” with Kevin Kolb at the Helm, they now have to switch gears and get report a comeback, hungry warrior poised to take the Eagles to the Top of the NFC and beyond against a great warrior in Mcnabb who helped a friend in need but now must war against him on the battlefield……That story sounds better.

Kolb is an overpaid clipboard holder and clean both their Jocks after the game.

And songs give the kid a break for f%^$ sake. We get it vick is your god and kolb is less than trash. Those are your feelings and your entitled to them …but serioulsy while i do agree vick is better you dont know what your going to get out of kolb one way or the other. Your right he is holding a clipboard that is all so try focusing more on vick the starters and the games that matter instead of our back up qb. The way you talk about kolb on this site youd think he wronged you personally.

The local media here are jokes. They are arrogant and pompous and ask the most softball questions to this coach and FO. The question that has not been asked (at least I didn’t hear) “Coach, with the failure of Kolb was trading McNabb a mistake?”. Not one of them empty suits asked that question. In my eyes it shows that it was a mistake. I know they cant admit it publicly but someone should ask that question!

This is what a I love about the NFL,
It’s a week to week season, and a “what have you done for me lately” type of Sport with so much hype, time (a week) to anticipate and get jacked up about your next game/opponenet.
On a personal Note, I harbor no ill feelings against McNabb (he is the Eagles Franchise All-Time Greatest QB), but now he visits as an opponent and I hope the Eagles make him run for his life and force him into poor decisions and throws so the Eagles can win…
This is a huge game for both clubs and will go a long way to determining who does what in the NFC East.. A Eagles Win puts them 3-1 Overall with a 2- 2 1/2 games lead on everyone else which is huge after only 4 weeks. All the NFC East teams have similar schedules and have tough schedules
so a fast start and a good record within the Division will probably determing the winner.
A Redskin Win pumps them up and gets them back to 2-2 with a 2-0 Record within the Division.
Should be a great match-up and we’ll see how good the Coaching, preparation and execution will be for both squads…I am sure both coaches realize what’s at stake and the peripheal stuff about the McNabb/Vick/Kolb QB relationship, and the fans reaction for McNAbbs 1st Visit back cannot be a distraction for either team… should be interesting…

Don is a legend ..all there is too it…respect his game. The fact that Vick is a bonafide stunner now might compilcate the whole revenge game aspect. But i could care less…it’s b.s. soap opera garbage that is not talking “EAGLES FOOTBALL”. Vick will dice this team….there undisciplined in the secondary, can be gouged in the rungame, and lack offensive punch when they need it. Don’t give me Cooley…he gets everyone…and watch last nights game…TIGHT ENDS int his league kill every team. Olsen beat Woodson like a drum on a few plays.D MVP. So its the weak link in most secondary’s.Just smack 5 in the mouth early and make him think about the rush.

If they play sound andkeep thecrowd in the game Eagles 40 Skins 21.

It amazes me how so many are “haters” or “lovers” of a certain player. The truth is that McNabb was a very good player here for a long time, but he never got us to the promised land. The truth is that we started the season not knowing how good Kolb could be, but we *thought* we had a good idea of what Vick was. Now, we learn that Vick may exceed most people’s expectations. His upside is “Steve Young” and you have to play him to find out if he can be that good. He looks good so far, but admittedly the competition was subpar. So, you gotta play him, and maybe -if we are lucky- he has grown into the QB that he never was in Atlanta. If not, Kolb may be the answer down the road, but we owe Kolb nothing. Best player gets on the field. Just keepin it real. No need to hate on any of these 3 QBs.

It is very ironic that people wanted McNabb out for a “traditional” west coast offense type QB who can throw more accurate short and intermediate passes. Instead they got a younger and faster version of McNabb. Quite funny in a way. I just care that we are winning. But G, you’re right so many people aren’t enjoying it because of their personal feelings toward Vick and unwarranted love for Kolb. Vick and McNabb are friends so it’s actually quite funny for them that they are playing against each other. I can imagine that text conversation

Vick: What’s going on man
McNabb: Nothing man just chillin, getting ready for yall
Vick: Yeah we getting ready for yall too
McNabb: Congrats on being the starter. I can’t believe they actually thought Kolb could replace me
Vick: I know man. Once you left, I knew I was about to get another starting job
McNabb: Yeah me too. Maybe Kolb can become the starter in Cleveland or something
Vick: Doesn’t matter to me, this my team now
McNabb and Vick: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH

richcow, I can understand some people disliking a player because of they way they play or something but all this personal stuff is ridiculous, a lot of which you can only find in Philly. We bash players that have personalities that we don’t like or we feel don’t demonstrate “philly”. This town cares entirely too much about stuff that has nothing to do about the game probably more than any other town. That’s the thing that makes it hard to play here. Not only do you need to perform good, we also have to like you to and just isn’t right. I know we have some of he best fans as well that truly support our team but sometimes, I wonder why any high profile athlete would come here if they have other choices. And the love comes from years of watching a player that done a lot for your team and organization. Now where the Kolb love comes from, I have no idea.

McNabb bored me, couldn’t win a Superbowl, and was a passive aggressive annoyance. I was glad when he left. McNabb should be cheered at the beginning, he gave Phila. some great years. I can’t believe it was ALL his fault there is no super bowl championship here. After that, OK he’s a Redskin now and he’s here to beat our team so he becomes fair game like any other QB from another team, for that reason ONLY. Not the reason those BIGOTS on wip morning show and the nitwit 30 have. Cataldi and Rhea are just generating hate for all the wrong reasons. McNabb should get some level of respect, nobody can truthfully say he did not give it. He did not ask to leave. Thank God MOST people are not like them, and will direct their efforts to cheering the Eagles on, and not on stupid hate.

Mcnabb played his heart out for this team. Gave it his best effort and did it better then anyone in our history. Hes he throws some worm balls but seriously….. the man did all he did without really having weapons around him. Then we gave him a weapon and he played like the MVP of the league…. then that weapon left and he had nothing again. Then we got him weapons to fit his style and we trade him away. Im fine with the trade….. its over BUT…. i dont get the hate. I never did. Get a job you losers.

I don’t see how this game is going to be more “complicated”..are there going to be different traffic patterns to get to the Linc? I’m thinking McNabb can make it without GPS on his own even so I don’t think it’s going to be a more “complicated” game. Perhaps a bit of a buzzkill from what this week was hyped up to be back in April when the sched came out. Everyone though then it was going to be the prodigal son returns home..McNabb versus Kolb, maybe the beginning of some sort of great rivalry between them. But now it’s McNabb versus Vick, ..to that I say so what?!? To me it’s Eagles versus Redskins..a division opponent and a must win game for us just like any other week. What makes it complicated is all the stock the hype-machine media and fans put into it. The game will happen either way…nothing complicated about that.

And do we really have to go through the fact that no-one here really blames McNabb alone for not winning a SB here in Philly? It was a combination of factors, deficiencies, what have you from the entire team from the top down that put our backs to the wall. From missed draft picks to defense not showing up to offense and redzone problems, coaching/playcalling, execution..it all adds up. The fact that we don’t have a Lombardi in Novacare is not all 5’s fault and we ALL know that. The dead horse is sufficiently beaten..put the bats down people.

People are gonna Boo and people are gonna cheer when McNabb’s name is called as the QB of the enemy. Don’t worry about other people and what they do. Boo, cheer, go to the bathroom during the intro’s, do whatever you do and stop worring and bitching about what someone else might do because it doesn’t agree with your views on the situation. We’re all Eagles fans to some degree and no matter what our team needs us behind them. GO BIRDS.

Also, we call ourselves a “knowledgeable” city of fans. Yet, so many people place the failure of the Eagles on one man, despite all the evidence to the contrary. When it comes to Kolb, however, those same people Kolb didn’t have this or that.

If you compare Marino to Dilfer, who’s the better QB? Did Marino fail to take Miami to the promised land? Did Dilfer lead the Ravens?

Steveo, I agree with you 100%. For years, everyone said he needed receivers. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that if you pass the ball more than every other team in the league that you should have the best receivers in the league.

McNabb finally gets a No. 1 and he becomes a record-breaking QB. The coach’s pass-happy philosophy had the man getting murdered in the Superbowl – from the very first play!!! Yet, our “knowledgeable fans” blame the QB.

Why didn’t they blame the QB when Kolb didn’t have time to throw?

I don’t like Kevin Kolb. I don’t have any confidence in saying he will come out of this situation as a good or potentially great QB. But those of you who think we know his future, or think he sucks, or think we should trade him, or think he’s done in the NFL – did you know McNabb was going to be traded from the Eagles to the redskins or was that a huge surprise to you? Did you know Reid would eventually have such quality at WR that people would be complaining about a guy with 4 TDs in 3 games? Did you know that we’d get TO back in the day (or was that a surprise)? Did you know the Vick experiment would turn into this? Did you know Laws would make a resurgence? Winston Justice?

No, you didn’t. And Paulman – Braves….. same deal…

So JIMMY MAC IS RIGHT – we don’t know anything about what Kolb will do for the Eagles in the future. It’s utterly foolish to think otherwise. Gonzo of the inquirer – (who is probably the lowest form of Philly media filth in philly) wrote an article “RIP Keven Kolb” the other day, and maybe some of you read it. But that’s just utter foolishness to write a guy off after less than a half season of play in the NFL. Vick was written off as nothing but an athletic improviser who could barely pass the ball effectively, after several seasons in the NFL. He had the legal case… jail time… and then he was back in the NFL. And people wrote him off as a slow, overweight, gimmicky-project, can’t QB for his life mistake. And now……

So if you are going to learn anything from this Vick thing (and maybe you don’t want to or you just wont), it’s that you really shouldn’t write people off too early and you should keep an open mind on players who show sparks of talent.

I like McNabb – and would cheer if I was there at the intro or when he first comes on the field – then I want him to endure a 6 sack, 2 int, 2 fumble shutout humilation in front of his former home crowd…

Schill hit an improtant point – why isn’t Reid and the FO getting more credit for the ressurgence of Mick Vick, the development of Mike Vick, the risk taking of bringing him in. When someone doesn’t work out (say Stacey Andrews) we get 100 posts discussing how stupid and cheap and everything else about this FO – but every team in the league had a chance to sign Vick, and at the time the eagles had McNabb, Kolb, and Feeley on the roster, the team took a shot.

Also like the thoughts on writing people off – many in the fan base are way to qucik to declare players ‘busts’ or worst ever.

Schiller, I poke fun at Kolb all the time, but only because it was done to McNabb.

During the entire off-season, I said that I couldn’t understand how ANYONE could determine what Kolb would be. He simply hadn’t played enough. While he has certainly regressed, things could turn around for him. It’s my opinion that the coach set him up to fail – not intentionally – but there’s no way we shouldn’t have addressed our offensive line during the off-season. After all, we had 13 picks.

I’m not a huge baseball fan. Don’t know much about the game, but after reading so many comments about Charlie Manuel (prior to winning the Series), I thought he was the Rich Kotite of baseball. My point is, we’re often quick to judge.

Before we all nominate and place QB M Vick into the HOF,
Let’s keep in mind that his awesome performances were against the Lions & Jaguars..
I am taking nothing away from his games, for he has far exceeded my expectations as a QB/Leader of this Offense and I hope he can continue this journey ride this “Vick Train” for his remaining years
as an Eagle QB…
But I caution many of you, just like 1 terrible half of Football does not make Kolb a bum NFL QB,
either does 2 great perfomances against some pretty bad teams and defenses make Vick a HOF QB
Let’s pace ourselves for it’s a long 16 weeks and enjoy the ride…

What Vick does is open things us for the Wr’s to run around and get open…using their speed. Will that happen all year?? We will see. So far so good but its a long year. I want to see what happens over the next 4 weeks or so. If he is still doing well, then lets give that man a new deal. No more promises going forward. The best qb will play.
