Don’t buy into all the hype that Eagles are an outstanding football team. They’re getting better but they’re not there yet.
For about a decade, the Eagles would enter the season with holes throughout the team, but Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb would some how get them to the playoffs and find a way to win a game or two. Then the Reid and McNabb’s limitations as well as the team’s shortcomings would surface and the season would end.
It wasn’t that McNabb and the team choked, they just weren’t good enough and we knew it when the season started but forgot their limitations after they won a few games.
Before the season, nobody would have been jumping up and down because the Eagles had beaten the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars. Now everybody should cool out and stop themselves from talking about the Birds winning the Super Bowl just because the Eagles beat two bad football teams.
This happens every year. The Eagles win some games and immediately the fans start thinking and talking Super Bowl, despite huge problems on the football team. The Jacksonville Jaguars defense totaled 14 sacks last year, but they pressured Michael Vick most of the day and got three sacks against the Eagles offensive line, so what does that tell you.
Think about it, if the Jaguars defense were to get three sacks a game for the season, they would lead the league in sacks.
With that in mind, will this Eagles offensive line going to be able to stand up to the better pass rushing teams in the league? I don’t think so.
I know the Birds have run the ball fairly well against the Lions and the Jags, but will they be able to run it against good defenses with a game on the line, or will Vick have to win the game single-handedly.
As productive as Michael Vick and the offense were on Sunday, he and his receivers could have played much better. Vick just flat out missed a few throws.
DeSean Jackson cost Vick about three or four completions by either dropping the ball or not getting his feet down in bounds.
Jeremy Maclin failed to bring down one of Vick’s best throws of the day.
Jaguars quarterback David Garrard was benched the week before. He’s terrible and his receivers are worse. Maurice Jones-Drew was limping around on a bad ankle.
Bottomline, the Eagles are playing well but must get better. They haven’t arrived.
I don’t want to see Vick set up, so that when something goes wrong, everybody can blame everything on him. The same offensive line that everybody was crying about Kevin Kolb being forced to play behind, is the same line that’s blocking for Vick, or not blocking for Vick.
The hits on Vick will take their toll just like body shots to the torso of a boxer will eventually take their toll.
If the Eagles are going to win a Super Bowl, Vick must continue to play great and the rest of the team will have to step up their games and that begins with that offensive line. As the weeks go by the Birds will get into the teeth of their schedule, then we’ll find out how good they are.
Before the Eagles pass some of those tests, don’t believe the hype.
Biggest surprise besides Vick to me is Ellis Hobbs. The Eagles hit another home run with releasing a aging veteran in Sheldon Brown. I havent read 1 we miss Sheldon comment. But the biggest surprise is how good Hobbs is. Hes every bit as agrressive and a better cover corner than Brown. Dare I say he is better than Asante? I never knew he was this good. WR have had no impact thus far this season. Is it that opposing QBs are killing us with throwing to the RBs and TEs and no need to challenge our corners or are corners that good? Probably a combination of both.
Super Bowl ….way to early to tell. Playoffs i think is a very good possiblitly for this team. If the offense can continue to gel as a whole (mainly the oline) i think this defense will get alot better as the year goes on. We do have a very young D and they r undersized but they r an extremly talented group this year. This is going to be a weird year around the nfl anyway with only three i bleieve undefeated teams left in the nfl as of week 4 two of which r the bears and cheifs ……who would have thought.
For the Record the Eagles Traded S Brown and C Gocong for a 5th Rd Draft pick and LB Hall (Who was released by the Eagles in the 1st week of camp)
I was watching some Browns highlights and Brown was beaten many times by the Ravens and Bucs
WR’s the last couple of weeks.. He was a good solid Cover Cb in his prime But age and minore leg injuries have caught to him as he’s lost a 1/2 step which is huge when you try to cover these big,strong fast WR’s of today…
Hobbs has played well and even plays where his Receiver has caught the ball, the coverage has been tight and he’s made a sure tackle right away.. He is aggressive and will bite on the short outs and get burned deep once in a while, but from 15 yards and in, he’s a good cover guy…
P man question for you. What do think the chaces are we resign Vick and ditch Kolb next year. I mean we r cheap and Vick is prob going to want about 5 years worth about 60 – 100 mil what r your thoughts?
About the Jaguars Def/Line G,
I think there is little doubt that that is their strength of their Defense for this 2010 season..
They have lots of Young talent along the D/Line so their Sack Totals will improve..
(it’s a much different front than they has last year.. Kampman is in his 1st year as a Jaguar
, Ayulua is their #1 Draft pick and a rookie who looks very active, and T Knighton is a 2nd year player) so comparing them to last years Jax Squad is irrelevant…
I think one thing the Eagles Offense does well when they are playing good is to have a quick tempo
and after throwing the ball as much as they do, they will tire out the opposing teams D/Lines and especially those teams with little depth (like the Jags).

If Vick plays well over the next 4-5 weeks (which there is no indication that he won’t)
then I believe the Eagles will re-sign him to a 3 year Deal and annouce it by Nov 15th (just in time for the stretch run and just prior to their Monday Night Game with the Redskins)
$$$ wise, I am sure there will be a good bonus $$$ up front and probably a 3-4 year deal worth about $45-$60 with $12-$15 in Guaranteed Dollars would be my best guess and a yearly Salary of $10-$12 per year deal
Being Age 30 for him is not like other players for since he was out of Football basically the last 3 years, he’s body is not beat up and he never really sustained any serious injuries during his career, so he should be physically fir to play at a high level for the next 4-5 years easily (barring any leg,knee injury)
As far as Kolb, I am not sure, there is interest in him by other clubs, If Vick playes well, stays healthy and the Eagles lock him up for the next 3-4-5 years, then Kolb will definitely be moved after this season… I really think the performance and play ove rthe next 4-5 game/weeks by Vick will determine Kolb’s future as an Eagle.

Great article G, I talked to you on the radio a couple of weeks back. Trust me I enjoy the excitement. I appreciate what Vick brings to the ball club. I am NOT a believer in this TEAM! We all know how this movie ends. This team is flawed. As much as I hate Dallas they have talent at every position. Yes they are nut cases but the talent is there. This FO for whatever reason does not evaluate talent properly. Bringing in these injured guys has not worked. Vick has made us take the focus off the issues that we have. I’m tired of it, personally. Yes this coaching staff deserves credit for helping to bring Vick to a better pocket passer. They also have to take a MAJOR hit in the bust Kevin Kolb. Yes I said it! All these apologist for this guy. 4 years and we still have to baby him! Please this is the NFL.

“G”, I don’t think anyone is thinking Superbowl just yet…..It’s just the excitement of actually having a chance of a season we fans thought was wasted waiting for Kolb to actually catch up with the rest of the talent on offense. Now that we have a proven fiery option at the QB position it takes the sting away from losing a franchise QB in Mcnabb. We’re riding the excitement of a season with a chance to do some damage and if we get enough wins….a home game in the playoffs could do wonders for our chances…
Now would we rather have a season with expectations in a weak NFC or throw away a season and expect losing because the quarterback needs time to learn ?
They learn in the offseason and preseason…We want a chance!

I don’t even know what hype G is referring to. Everything I’ve heard has been people more skeptism (which is should be) than optimism. All of the hype as been going towards Vick and not the team which is understandable right now. But who is proclaiming this team a Super Bowl team?
@daggolden, are you kidding? Hobbs is nowhere near the corner Sheldon is. His “turnstyle” coverage will not work when we start playing the good QBs and receivers again. It didn’t work against Rodgers and Jennings and it won’t work against Romo and Austin x 2 Manning and Nicks x 2, Ryan and White, Schaub and Johnson, Manning and Wayne. Please don’t get all hyped on Hobbs after playing against teams with bad QBs.
Paul, you are exactly correct. He is fine in the short and intermediate routes because he’s not afraid to tackle. But he’ll get abused deep especially when we face some of the top QBs in the league that know how to attack downfield and have receivers who can play the game. He’s ok, but that’s about it.
WWW – howgozit – I disagree on the perspective – I think the perspective in this article – as with many eagles fams, is the super bowl or bust mentality. If you show any – lets us the word – happiness or satisfaction, with the fact the eagles are 2-1 and in first place and the team just played a very nice game, you instantly get the ‘don’t book the tix yet, don’t annoint them yet’ – the proper perspective is that last week they played a very solid game – but that doesn’t matter come Sunday – Come Sunday its a whole new game – and proper perspective is we do that every week until 1) the seasons over and they didn’t make the playoffs 2) they lose a playoff game or 3) they win the SB. You book your tix after the NFCC game – which is also the proper time to ‘place them’ in the SB – and you don’t annoint a team – they win the game. As a fan – a true die hard, bleed eagle green, go crazy on Sunday fan – I always have the eagles winning the SB. I look at teams like the Red Sox that went how many years – but every year they hauled themselves out until finally they got over the hump.
Looking for wholes in a football team is kind of like looking for hypocrisy in a politician. Not that hard –
And for all the folks busting on Kolb – many had written off Justice, many had written off Laws. Kolb is an eagle and deserves our full support –

Vick’s Ascension Magnifies Racial Divide
I was talking to an ex-NFL player last week, guy I hadn’t seen in a while, and eventually we got around to Michael Vick. The ex-player is African-American, from the rural South. His take was that Vick’s prison term for dogfighting was way too harsh, and that people should let that go, as Vick remakes himself as the quarterback of the Eagles. The ex-player recalled seeing Sunday afternoon dogfights in a park where he grew up, witnessed (and presumably wagered upon) by the local police.
This was not an isolated occurrence. I think if you surveyed the largely African-American Eagles locker room, that guy’s take would be the perspective of a huge percentage of the players.
Race is such a tricky, hot-button thing, so many of us just try to pretend it isn’t a part of the issues we deal with, even when it obviously is.The Eagles’ locker room shocked much of the (white) fan base by voting Vick the Ed Block Courage Award last year. Hmmm. What do you think that was about?
Another conversation last week, with a (white) agent. He was talking about going to a Super Bowl party many years ago, when Vick was near the start of his career. The party was largely African-American, and the agent remembered being surprised at how Vick’s presence resonated with other famous players and guests — “it was like Michael Jordan had walked in,” the agent said.
One of the reasons Roger Goodell was so interested in Vick’s rehabilitation was Vick’s standing in the African-American community. Predogfight scandal, by 2007 much of white America might have seen Vick as a sideshow, a quarterback who never took his craft seriously enough to win anything. Black America saw an artist, an elegant, unstoppable performer. (They now see him as an elegant, unstoppable performer who has been persecuted by white people.)
This was much like the split that surrounded Allen Iverson in his prime. (A guy from the exact same background, a few neighborhoods over.)
So, here we are, with Vick starting for the Eagles, and playing well. All over the Internet, people (mostly African-American) argue that he has paid his dues and should be embraced. Other people (mostly not African-American) argue that torturing and killing dogs over a period of years isn’t something you just shrug off because a guy went to prison for a while and is now playing real well.
I don’t see any easy answers, an unqualified yes to one and no to the other. Obviously, I didn’t grow up black in the rural South. I grew up white in the suburban South. I think I understand a little of the “cultural” argument. I never saw a dogfight, but in my family, dogs were not cuddly little foo-foo things; they lived outdoors, didn’t come in the house. One neighbor had a kennel of hunting dogs, and gave us one who couldn’t hunt.
Still, I found myself wanting to ask the ex-player last week, “So, after these dogfights in the park, did you watch the dogs being hanged and electrocuted? Did you think, ‘Gee, that looks like fun, I’d like to kill some of those dogs myself!’ Over and over and over again?”
Vick has been nothing but decent and courteous to me. I can’t reconcile what he has done with the guy I talk to in the Eagles’ locker room. I’m really hoping to get a better handle on that as we move forward. And as a sports reporter, I can’t let my discomfort with what he did make me discount what he does on the field; if I let that happen, I am not doing my job.
But I’ll admit, I find the idea of Vick “sticking it to” his critics by playing well a really perverse, obnoxious notion. He can throw for 100 touchdowns this year, and he still did what he did, and it was still really, really, really wrong.
The only hope for something good coming out of Vick’s ascension that I can see is that maybe Vick will gain a greater platform to somehow explain himself, that he can give us a better notion than he has so far of how these things can possibly happen, and demonstrate through his words and deeds he is really a different person now.
But I think it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
And for those who just can’t let it go, here’s some food for thought:
It’s very easy to hold resentments, but forgiveness is vital. If the African-American community held resentments for slavery, racial murders, hangings, Jim Crow, and the many legal injustices committed against it, we’d be in the middle of a civil war. How many times have white racists gotten off for murders committed against blacks? How many times have whites been slapped on the wrist for crimes committed because it was reasoned that their television exposure or lost of of a job/income was more than enough punishment? What Vick did was despicable, but there are many more despicable crimes committed by whites, i.e., those committed against the American Indian. The list goes on and on. I was taught that holding a resentment is like going to the bathroom on yourself. You’re the only who feels it. I’ve learned that it’s not necessarily true, because we share each others’ pain in one way or another.

scorp i can only go by what i have seen up to date. All i know is Hobbs has been solid and has given no indications of being a turnstyle. Please let me know where you have gotten that from in these 3 games. Now you are predicting that he isnt gonna be good in the future which is ridiculous. Lets see how it plays out. All i know is that Palaxico and others abused Sheldon for years. Sheldon was ok never a pro bowler as evidence of never being there. So lets not make him more than he was. A few big hits is all it takes in Philly to make you forget he was a avg coverage guy.

NAVY-itogezfine- Trust me, on the inside every year we’re going 16-0 and winning it all but I try to balance that with a dose of reality. I want us to go deep into the POffs but with this OLine..the Jag type teams won’t be there..or the 49ers or any other really bad team. Week in and week out it’s the best of the best and I pray we hold up with a bit of luck but I don’t set myself up too much. That way, when we do get to the SB…all the more reason to go bird crazy brothah!

Sorry but when you tell the world that you have been watching this guy since he was in college. You draft him with your first pick in the 2007 draft. You trade your franchise QB to a division rival. You give the guy a ten million dollar extention. You tell everyone who will listen that this guy can perform in this “west coast offense”. He is so accurate. He will get the ball out quicker.
Justice and Laws were not brought in to lead this franchise. I don’t know Kolb personally. He may be a great guy. I just don’t get why we can’t blast him and we had a QB here who took plenty of fire and accomplished much more. I don’t get that.
BTW when the smoke clears I still want Reid fired! Getting rid of McNabb was suppose to be the sign of change. Doesn’t this movie just repeat itself with a new starring role now!!!!!!!!

The key with having Hobbs playing a solid CB gets back to having a consistent Pass-Rush..
If Eagles can sustain a heavy Pass rush aginst the good QB’s & O/Lines,then Hobbs and the rest of the Secondary are a lot less likely to give up big plays down field since opposing QB’s won’t have the time,
Then again, you can say this same thing about every team, and every CB or Safety…

Hobbs is a solid CB – I think he is better then what Brown would have been. Give him a little help deep and this has the makings to be a decent defense –
Remeber the Eagles are traditionally slow starters that pick up steam as the year goes on –
navy, also remember that the one ‘giving hobbs a little help deep’ is Nate Allen. The kid has proven that he’s reliable back there, so I’m comfortable with Hobbs handing off to him deep if he must sometimes.

Eagle co 32, How is this a movie repeating itself? Did Donovan have these weapons? Not until last year when we were too injury plagued to do anything. And it seems like the DL is better than it has been with Donovan.
And again, you seem to be closing the book on Kolb. The kid has still played less full games than Brandon Graham will have when we face the Falcons. He had a horrible first half v. Greenbay this year, a bad concussion, and (wait, I have to take a huge deep breath to spit out all the rest of his resume this year)…. oh nevermind, that’s it.
He played that horrible half against one of the best Ds in the league…. the man is still on the Eagles and very well may be called upon to fill in for Vick this year. He also might develop into a solid QB for us in the future. To say you know otherwise is false and ridiculous.

Hate to beat a dead horse, but my bigger point is that this NFC is Wide Open and even the supposed good teams (Cowboys,Vikings,Giants,49ers) all have issues and flaws as every team in the NFL does.. SO whay not the Eagles, If Vick can continue to play at the high level he’s been playing and the Def/Line can get after the godo opposing QB’s they will start facing, then they have as good as chance as anyone ….

More Kolb bashing…how Droll. As for the Superbowl talk…I dont see why looking at this conference it is totally out of the question. We still have a few games to get things working properly before we get our real tests. This is Philly so we will go overboard of course. That being said The talent is young but can get the experience needed to help when the games are on the line late this year. Superbowl isnt likely but the possibility is always there. I like the speculation lol.
I believe most if not all the pundits have Green Bay going to the big dance this year. I’m sure Indy fans and NE fans..even Baltimore have been talking February in Dallas.

BTW to all the weapons we have now. Yes we have weapons! We had them last year. The trenches is what kills us. This DL that you speak of is too small to be effective in big games. Hey I hope you are right. Its just my opinion.
PW. I think EB could be a good RB. I don’t think 1 fumble should’ve put him back on the bench. He was fighting his ass off for those extra yards when he put the ball on the turf. Mike Bell can’t get 2 yards on 2 carries and he’s still the #2??? I remember..was it 2 years ago..Philly versus Dallas game 1…36 fumbeled when we were driving to go for the win…game over…And we still have 5 RB’s on the roster and only 4 WR’s…

Now can you tell me that if you polled every winning/successful/HOF/SB QB (how ever you want to classify them), along with coaches and QB coaches, do you think they’d tell you that being ‘in a system for three years’, without a full season of actual playing time is enough to get a guy ready to perform at a high level in the league? Or forget a full season, how about a half a season? Has Kolb had that yet? Nope.

I am just thankful that Omar Gaither was deactivated. Cut him now and free up a roster spot. Too slow, and to soft. If the Patriots have an offensive lineman on their practice squad, the take him.
Eagle co – who says that Reid ‘gave up on him’? Reid put Vick in as the starter because he was playing so well. He did demote Kolb to #2, that’s different from ‘giving up on him’. Remember, Reid benched McNabb for Kolb once, didn’t mean he gave up on McNabb, he started the rest of that season and the next…

schiller, I agree but one can argue that Reid went back to McNabb because Kolb didn’t play well against Baltimore. Who knows what would have happened if he would have or somehow came out with a win. We weren’t down by a lot when McNabb got benched. Then there’s also the theory that Reid never wanted to bench McNabb in the first place. So I don’t think we can accurately compare Reid’s loyalty to McNabb and put in the same conversation as his loyalty to Kolb. Just my thought.
