McDermott Says His Defense Must Show Up Ready To Play At The Start

Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott didn’t have a lot of complicated solutions for the Eagles run defense problems.  He simply said the boys have to show up ready to play on the first play of the game until the last one, as well as get off blocks quicker and tackle better.

He felt they got pushed around by the Redskins and he was right. McDermott explained that Redskins running back Ryan Torain got up under Eagles safety Quintin Mikell, when he ran him over on the goalline.  On that same play, Redskins fullback, Mike Sellers flattened linebacker Akeem Jordan.  Torain went into the endzone standing up.

Unfortunately on that play both Mikell and Jordan didn’t look like they belonged in the NFL.  It showed they weren’t ready to play at the start of that football game.

Mikell said he didn’t think the Birds defense had played poorly against the Redskins.  He said they didn’t get the job done on a few plays.  The veteran safety said he thought the media was overreacting to their loss to the Skins.

I disagree with him and I’m concerned about this football team.  Mikell is supposed to be a leader, but he’s saying the defense played well despite showing up late for the game, then getting the ball run down their throats in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.   They’ve got an awfully tough road ahead if they can’t stop the run.

Defensive end Darryl Tapp thought the defense got so caught up into Donovan McNabb’s return that they were trying too hard to make plays.  He feels it’s why they made mistakes in their assignments.

I talked to an NFL source who looked closely at the coaches video tape of the game and he thought the Birds made a ton of mistakes versus the Washington running game.

Weakside linebacker Ernie Sims thinks they need to play harder and give better effort.  The Birds are seeing quite a few misdirection runs this year and I think the guy that they’re aimed at, is Sims.  The former Detroit Lions is prone for biting on play-action pass fakes.

Skins tight end Fred Davis beat him deep last Sunday on a play action fake.

Middle linebacker Stewart Bradley said he had a “brain cramp” or two and we all know that one of them occurred on the touchdown pass to Chris Cooley.

The Eagles will be starting Moise Fokou at the strongside linebacker this Sunday in San Francisco as a way of getting bigger and more physical.  I think Fokou is going to be physical with the Niners, but is he going to play smart football.  If he will keep the mistakes and penalties to a minimum, then I say let the young fella play.

On the other hand, if playing Fokou means a couple of stupid and costly roughing or holding penalties, I say leave him on the bench.  I think the main reason they want to get him on the field is my belief that Akeem Jordan is really a Will linebacker.

Fokou is going to have a tough battle with Niners tight end Vernon Davis, who is a physical specimen.  Fokou didn’t emphasize his size or power, he stressed his ability to get deep.

The Eagles strongside backer will try to hold up Davis on passing plays to prevent Davis from getting deep and putting pressure on the safeties.

The Niners are a tough football team that will put the ball on the ground and pound it with the best of them.  It wouldn’t surprise anybody if that’s their strategy against the Birds.

McDermott says the Birds have to bring their toughness every week.  They’re going to get a heavy dose of Niners hard-running halfback Frank Gore this weekend.   Like Ryan Torain and Clinton Portis of the Skins, Gore will run a defender over if he’s not attacked.

Former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook is another weapon, who hasn’t played very much so far.  The Birds defense will have to be aware of where and when he lines up.

He did note that the NFL haven’t had many consistent teams this year, regardless he’s hoping his defensive unit we find a way to get the job done on Sunday.

..and not just the start of the second half when we’re down by 2 scores either.

My quick solution for this Eagle Defense facing F Gore and struggling 49er Offense with 2 starting Rookies alond the O/Line who wil attempt to run , run and run some more against the Eagles is to employ a 5-2-4 defense out of the gate and in obvious rushing downs.
5 DL (Cole,Bunkley,Dixon,Patterson and Graham) across the line of scrimmage.
The 3 interior DL line up right the C & OG and the 2 DE line up outside the OT’s
Go with 2 LB (Bradley and Fokou) spaced 2 yards off the line of scrimmage opposite the OT’s
McDermot’s Comments are all similar to all the Coaches AR/MM and Special Teams Coach April’s that all seem to have “excuses” built in and I am tired of hearing about them..
This is the team that was put together with everyone’s imput over the last 5-6 months, stop the crying and coach these guys up or let someone else do the coaching…

I hate to say it: the Eagle’s defense hasn’t look that great under Sean McDermott. Since the passing of former coach Jim Johnson, the defense has looked confused. The constant turnover in linebackers, new-found inability to stop the run…it’s been a disappointment.

Pman, quick slants to the TE and WRs beat that all day. But nice attempt. Do you think Asante beats Crabtree allday? Do you think Vernon Davis is a bad TE?

Meanwhile Singletery will go back and employ the 85 Bears D and just pound Kolb into cream corn. The OLine will not block and Kolb will not be able to get out from under it. Too bad…

TE V Davis is a stud no doubt and has actually had to stay in and help block quite often due to the inexperience of their OL, but he needs to be chicked off the line of scrimmage and covered at all times.
WR Crabtree has not done a lot so far, but with a year under his belt now, he’s probably ready to break out and have a good season (if QB A Smith can get him the ball)

To FS1960,
The Eagles Defense has been on the slide for the last few seasons..
I think when the signed CB Samuel and aging of Dawkins, the secondary has become more timed and less agressive and physical… The LB Corps has a merry go round for the last 5 years and the
DL draft whiffs of McDougal,Abriami,B Smythe,G Cogong, and free agent signings of
M Reagor,D Klecko have been out and out disappointments and busts…
combine this with the Def Secondary Draft whiffs of M Ware,Jack Ike, Q Demps,CJ Gaddis,M HArris have all set this Defense behind…
Sooner or later, poor drafting and reaches on injured draft picks/free agents catched up with you as an organization (Marlin Jackson,Jack Ike,Stacey Andrews,C Ingram, are good examples)
and the Sooner and Later just happen to come together now in 2010

Kolb scrambled for 21 yds on 2 plays and had a 32 yarder called back for a holding penalty
He is far from a statue BUT you can only avoid rushes for so long ( unless you are Fran Tarkenton) and if the O line doesn’t get it done or if they get another injury we may see Kafka

Mancini – they don’t know what to do in thier own base defense. How will they be able to keep their assignments in your 5-2-4?

The run D for the Eagles has been bad since ’05, only really improving in the ’08 season when Bradley came in. He’s only a few games into a season off an ACL tear, which if you remember slowed McNabb and Westy both down for a year at least when they had similar injuries. I hope that Bradley improves as the year goes along.

With that said, I’d almost suggest that a few 4-6 or 3-4 looks might throw enough confusion into the game that a 49ers team with a new OC and a bad QB might just make a few mistakes that we can capitalize on. Why aren’t we seeing more Dixon at DT in obvious run situations? How about mixing up the DT lineup a bit more? Why do we always think that the LBs are the problem when strong pressure up the middle will throw a big wrench in almost any running game?

I also have to admit that I’m worried that we’ll have another season of McDermott’s constant weekly adjustments with players. It’s hard for players to buy into a vision when the DC changes his mind every week, and increases the chances of mental mistakes, coverage breakdowns, etc…

Show up at the start? It might be good if they showed up at all. I am tremendously disappointed in this team so far. Nate Allen is possibly the only bright spot.

Sean MCDermott will be out of Football a year from now.. He is overmatched and not up for the challenge and the scheming, game planning that is neccessary for a top D/C in the NFL…

G:

The Birds are a young team. The defects in this defense can be fixed over probably two years – maybe one if we hit on a stud DT and a maniac LB in the draft. I’ll hang…and try to be patient. But watching the Eagles get ground up is BRUTAL! I can think of nothing worse than that as a football fan. And because of it, I’m going to lose it and write EVEN MORE stupid comments on your website this season.

you’re kidding me right??? AR even has his D coordinator shoveling shit!!!!! this team is too small and all they know how to do is blitz. the defensive scheme is simply awful. we have undersized players. Has anyone noticed when the eagles draft a player for the defensive side of the ball he has to play 3 or 4 different positions??? How about when eagles players leave and go to other teams they seam to do well and this is because other teams ask you play the position you were initially drafted to play. How much longer as Eagles fans are we going to have to put up with this garbage???? FIRE ANDY REID NOW!!!!!

Talongrip that’s exactly it. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more discussion in this regard. I’ve commented on it breifly on other forums but , Eagles players nearly always seem to do well when they play with other teams because they use them in the positions that they were accustomed to playing in school. The Eagles nearly always force them to play in positions they are vaguely familiar with resulting in defensive chaos . I have no faith in the Eagles dysfunctional coaching cadre to teach anyone to successfully switch positions full time.

Ha-ha-ha, WellWellWell. That’s funny but, I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened. That’s the story of our lives with the Eagles. Success at last then disaster.
