I know my realm of sports coverage has been more driven towards the Philadelphia 76ers and the NBA, but after witnessing such a masterpiece by Roy Halladay in Game 1 of the NLDS, I felt compelled to share my thoughts with you guys.
I have to admit I was on the edge of my seat after the 6th inning. The the smell of a possible no hitter was overwhelming, similar to aroma of breakfast cooking and arousing your nostrils as you wake up on a Sunday morning. I could hardly sit still by the time the 9th inning came around. And every time the announcers on TBS would mention his chances of making history, I would give the screen a look similar to the monkey that hides in Chris Griifin’s (Family Guy) closet . However once the final out was recorded I immediately jumped for joy and shouted “wow, a bleeping no hitter.”
Now I know I wasn’t the only person to react like that, but what’s odd is that I stopped abruptly and got focused on Game 2. However, I could not stop the hundreds on text messages and twitter updates (@jerv215) I received about Halladay’s performance,
One guy texted me asking me about the magnitude of the game and was quite shocked how i responded.
Guy: “How does it feel?”
Me: “Well it’s only one game and the big prize is so far away.”
Guy: “I get all that but doesn’t it feel good to see history”
Me. “It was cool to watch, but the World Series is still out there”
Guy:”True! But that no hitter is history man and any sports fan has to respect that”
After reading that line I sat there and took it all in for a second. I turned on the radio to see if I was alone with how I was thinking. Within seconds of hearing more fans react to the game i realized I was. I realized how historic of a night it was, and how lucky I was to tune in and witness it myself.
Wow! A no hitter in the post season! And it involved the Phillies! The same team that was the first to 10,000 losses. The same team that was once the butt of all jokes, now finds themselves in the history books for something that has only happened twice in the history of the game. That’s major! And to think it’s only Game 1.
One of my best friends has been telling me since the start of the season “every fifth day is a Halladay” and I would just laugh. However after watching his dominating performance, I have to agree with his logic. Game 1 felt like Thanksgiving. I guess all we can do now is sit back and wait for Christmas.
A great outing by a true pro. A world Series win is the true prize though even if it comes ugly I want another Parade.
