Can Michael Vick Continue To Play Great Football?

Can Michael Vick continue to play the great football we saw him play earlier in the season? Was his performance at the beginning of the season a mirage?

Can he continue to pick apart defenses from the pocket with better efficiency than any quarterback in the National Football League?

Vick sat in the pocket earlier in this year’s campaign and threw darts to all of his receivers with great command of the offense and great accuracy on his throws.  Will he be able to keep it up?

Or will he come back to earth and start to make mistakes, throw interceptions and commit costly turnovers?

Can he continue to use his legs to extend plays and find the open receivers?  Can he take off on runs for first downs, yet give up the dare devil stuff?  That’s a big one after being sidelined with this injury.  Can Vick stay healthy?

He’s confident he can do all of the above and we’re all going to be right there watching all the action.  In fact the nation will be watching because the Eagles have some big games ahead and we all know how Vick draws attention when he plays.

This team believes in Vick.  I don’t know how he’s going to play the rest of the way, but these guys believe in him.

Did you see LeSean McCoy following him around on the sideline, near the end of the Eagles-Titans game?  What do you think they were talking about?  Possibly Vick’s return to the starting quarterback job?

Who do you think McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin want to see playing quarterback this week?

Last year when McNabb was here, it was very popular to make observations about who the team believes in McNabb or Kolb.  We heard how much these young guys believe in Kolb.

Who do they believe in now?  I’ll tell you who they believe in.  The name is Vick, Michael Vick.

That brings us to what Kolb has shown us so far this season.

He’s definitely not capable of putting a flawed team on his back and carrying them to a title, at least not, yet.

We saw in the Atlanta Falcons game that he can be the same quarterback we saw last year when he threw for 300 yards in each of his two starts, as long as they have a great game plan and everybody around him plays very well.

He’s not the same guy when the players around him aren’t playing as well and the opposing defense puts the pressure on him. Kolb’s decision-making suffers greatly when he’s under pressure.  His arm strength is limited, so deep passes can become an adventure.

Kolb hasn’t had a great deal of playing time, so he might be able to improve with playing time.   When he gets that playing time is uncertain.

Of course he can continue to play great football Gary. I believe it at least. Mike seems to love Andy Reid and Marty and he has said several times that he enjoys playing the game to get the win for his coaches. He said it makes them feel good, therfore making him feel even better. Plus, in his most recent interview, Michael said that he doesn’t know how to slide down as a QB. But he says within 2 weeks, he will come up with a bunch of skeems to protect himself. Gotta love it. Lets go Vick!

They way I look at it, he’s starting over..
Those great games versus te lions and Jags a month ago were like Pre-Season games and mean very little moving forward. As Long as Vick doesn’t try to do too much, or run at the 1st sign of trouble
and let the game come to him and read defenses and go through his progressions, I think he will be fine and give the Eagles their best chance of winning this season to make the playoffs. After 5 weeks off, he is going to need a game or time to get his timing down and adjust back to the speed of the game which I don’t think is going to be that much of an issue with him.
If he tries to do it all, and runs all over the place and takes too many shots, he won’t last 3-4 Weeks before he’s injured again and would really in my mind, prove to not be the long-term answer as the
Eagles QB, but if he plays smart, practices and studies hard and follows his Coaches games plans, then I think he will not only be good for the rest of the season, but then should become the long-term answer for QB for the Team
I am really interested to see how he plays and responds after he get’s hit which has always been the knock on him that he can be intimidated when you play physical against him and hit him around

Mancini, great points. Everybody else too. I dont expect to see many Kolb Lovers on this article commenting. Haha.

It was definitely obvious who Jackson, Maclin, and McCoy want as their QB. Thats why Michael has to be that. Give the players who they can trust, therefore giving them the confidence to exceed expectations week in and week out. Ya dig?

Wait. The question posed is Vick able to continue to play “great” football. Almost in the same breath, you then switch to your opinion of a developing quarterbacks weaknesses and ascribing his successes to the game plan and the supporting cast around him. What is your agenda? What has been your agenda for some time?

Vick only has 61 passing % which is 19th among QB’s. It does not mean much but it was against bad teams, and we do not have a great D or O-line so Qb play is more important now. Kolb is stinking too. If Vick would go against a good AFC team, i believe he will only complete half his passes and they would stop his running like we did him as a Falcon. I hope i am wrong, Vick takes us to SB and i eat my words.

jake seriously if u watched the games ud know

of course kolb has made a few nice throws but for the most part vick has been threading it
that throw to celek up the seam was ridiculous the corner route that ur boy kolb is scared to throw vick put it on the money over the defenders outstretched arm a perfect pass djax catch turn and td
numerous throws have been perfect the deep ball to djax that split 2 defenders 50 yards down field was crazy
kolb vs niners started out with hitch to maclin got a playaction to celek no1 within 15 yards of him
this is what g means by gameplanning there was no1 within 15 yards of the guy it dont take a great throw and its ur a read (meaning 1st option) not to much qbing involved on a play like that thus the gameplan comments

I hope Celek starts practices with the passing machine, for he’s dropping the soft tosses from Kolb,
What’s he going to do when VIck is zipping them in there…
The TE position needs to be addressed this Off-season, Celek has lost a half-step and has taken a lot of hard hits the last 2 seasons and is not really a downfied threat due to his lack os speed and is a below average blocker.. He is good for 6-10 yard routes between the #’s in the middle of the field and thats about it…

And this Eagles team under Reid struggles more with bad AFC teams than good ones. Besides the Colts and the Patriots (whom we can never seem to beat) and the never beaten the titans even when they weren’t good we are usually ok against everyone else.

PW, that is a good point that a lot of people are disregarding. Andy Reid made Vick the starter. Not the fans or Gcobb. Andy Reid did. So he must see something from them everyday that made him go with Vick as the starter right? It would have had to take a lot for him to go with Vick after giving Kolb all that money and trading away McNabb presumably for Kolb to be the guy. Some of you trust Andy for all his decision making but not for this. What gives?

I with Dizzy,
Colts are struggling with injuries to their 2nd/3rd/4th WR’s (Garcon,Collie,Gonzales)and their top 2 RB’s (Addai,D Brown) and lost their All-Pro TE (Clark) for the season.
On Defense, Colts lost their best DT in A Johnson, MLB G Brackett out with a sore knee,
All-PR Safety B Sanders out for the Season, his back-up M Bullit out for the Season.
This Colt team is beat up, and does not have the overall talent of years past, it also doesn’t have the overall coaching as it did in the past and P MAnning is another year older and still a very good QB, but not playing All-World like he has over the last 6-7 years..Key to beating the Colts is simple,
Contain Freeny and Mathis and don’t let them go wild and double Team WR R Wayne and hit him and P Manning as much as possible for neither of them like to be hit and are really affected when they do get hit.
They had a bye week this pass week and play a Monday Night game versus the Texans in Indy.
So they will have a short week to get ready to play the Eagles at the Link.

If Eagles can’t beat this 2010 version of the Colts, they may never beat them;;
Eagles should win this game going away rather easliy

The reason for the McNabb trade was to give Kolb the chance to play and prove he is the quarterback the team invested so heavily in, a second round pick and big money on the extension. Last year he showed the promise worthy of the investments. This year he has shown tremendous upside, although it is expected that he will have good games, not so good ones, maybe NFC player of the week accolades and so on. We need a season or so to see if he is the quarterback the eagles brass thought he was and may still think he is.

With everything invested, with the promise of a great future, the eagles have capriciously changed directions with Vick, a quarterback with a proven record, troubles off the field, and a quarterback that any prudent owner would not want to wear the face of the franchise. He is no McNabb in that role, who represented Philadelphia very well.

I am tired of playground football. We traded Mcnabb to see if Kolb can run the system. He has shown that he can. There is promise for more. Why waste it or possibly go backwards with Vick.

jakedog, you are talking about something that’s been argued back and forth when Reid made the change. No need and discussing it again. It’s over. Reid made the change. We have to deal with it whether we want Vick or Kolb. No need in arguing whether the Eagles should waste a season to let Kolb “grow”. Been there done that.

scorpiodsu

October 26, 2010 2:12 pm

Yeah give Kolb a whole year so he can get our entire WR corps killed and then what? Win now, or go home. It’s quite simple. Reid doesn’t have the luxury of time. 2 years on contract after this year. Not time to wait for Kolb who MIGHT be good enough. The NFC is nothing special and with Vick we can beat anyone in the conference. Go back and read the threads from a few weeks ago. The topic has already been exhausted. Reid made the switch and that’s it. Tell him why you’re mad.

The decision was made probably because of Reid’s contract status, the impatient fan base , exacerbated by the phillies success. Lurie and Banner will not tolerate second fiddle status. Reid is feeling the heat for the first time.

While recognizing the amazing talents of Vick, I think it is a huge gamble. You are probably right though that the argument has been decided. Then why do Cobb and others continue to critique Kolb’s abiliities if the point is moot?

That’s the $64,000 question. If I had to guess, I’d say that he will continue to play great football.

I was completely surprised by Vick’s play, based on his his tenure in Atlanta and his poor showing in the pre-season.

However, once the season began, his play was completely elevated. To my pleasant surprise, I saw him stand tall in the pocket and deliver the ball with accuracy and touch. And despite what other people thought they saw, he didn’t bail on pass plays. In fact, I’d bet that Kolb ran as much as, or more than, Vick.

Other reasons for my optimism are:

1. Vick played very well despite the terrible offensive line play at the time.

2. He played well despite the fact that the offense was set up for a right-hander (no small thing).

3. He played well despite not getting the reps during training camp (Kolb was being prepared)

4. He seems to be tremendously motivated. His stint in jail and the loss of so much money has left him hungry. Vick has admitted that he did not study the QB position while in Atlanta. Further, he promised himself that he would learn to the play the position correctly once he got out of jail.

5. He learned from McNabb how to prepare himself (with film study and caring for his body).

6. He’s playing for a contract.

Time will tell.

As for Kolb getting time to grow as a QB. Since when did the NFL ever hand out starting jobs to 2nd best players on the team?

You say playing Vick is a “huge risk.” Does playing Kolb present some sort of certainty? I see more of a risk playing Kolb. He obviously is NOT the complete package, and it seems there would have to be many changes made in the offense to try to play to his strengths. Kolb is not a down-field passer, but we have down-field receivers. These guys will get killed playing the short game. They’re not big enough.

Jake, for the same reason that people keep hyping up his abilities and making excuses even though he isn’t the starter. People people critical has nothing to do with whether we again need to argue the reasons why Andy went with Vick over Kolb. 2 totally different conversations. On one hand, for the time being, the issue is settled about who the starting QB is. On the other hand Kolb’s proficiency as a starter is still debatable. That’s why.

phillywill, i think it was already determined that Vick had a nice game against GB, albeit GB was playing prevent and obviously did not game plan for Vick. Only time will tell, but i think the best case scenario for Vick is that he gets hurt again. Imagine, he readily admitted he still does not know how to slide. I appreciate his story and wish no ill harm, but i think most of you are ridiculous. Three games, GB (note above explanation), Det, and Jacksonville. Its a small sample size against lousy teams. here we go! do you believe truly that GB, did not have certain schemes for Vick when we was on the field! They knew they were going to see Vick! Maybe the didnt game plan for Vick as much as they should have! Also the same can be said for Kolb with the start at the Falcons and the Titans…Andy Reid didnt make it totally clear that Vick would not start! Which means the teams had to prepare for both of our QB’s! Titans coach said that he would be doing his team an injustice if they did not prepare for Michael Vick! That says alot!!! So think about this, the Titans game planned for Vick, not Kolb, why didnt Kolb have a 300 yard passing game and 4 TD’s??…sicne game planning is your excuse!! Game planning for Vick is much more difficult than game planning for Kolb!

Now the Eagles are in 3rd Place behind teams with better NFC COnference schedules and better NFC East Divisional Record .. Only 2 teams will make the playoffs from the NFC East at best, so they need to almost win out in the games versus their NFC East & Conference opponents
If the go 6-3 but lose to COlts,Texans and let’s say the Giants once, it doesn’t really hurt them

Jake

I disagree that Kolb “ran the system.” I believe the system was grossly adjusted for him. For example, Andy Reid ran the ball 52% of the time Has that EVER happened? Further, it was reported that Reid designed plays where Kolb would lock onto and throw to only one receiver. There was no “read progression.” This was supposedly done so that Kolb would throw the ball downfield. It wouldn’t take long for defenses to figure that out.

I’m sorry, but 4.8 yards per pass play does not show “tremendous” upside, nor the “promise of a great future.” On the other hand, those poorly under-thrown balls thrown up for grabs remain a matter of concern.

Contrary to your statement, there was not a lot of money invested in Kolb’s future. He’s signed only through next year at $6 million. It’s not like he’s getting $20 million. Vick, on the other hand, is earning $5 million. Is that also considered a huge investment?

Besides, Reid invested a ton of money in the Andrews Sisters, Reggie Brown, etc., but they’re gone. If you make a mistake, you cut your losses and move forward. You don’t stick with that mistake.

Let’s not forget that Vick was also named player of the month.

I know, I was rooting for the Cowboys to pull it out! With Romo out though, I think our chances have increased against the Cowboys! Although I think we would have beat them with Romo regardless …I think the Redskins are going to do us some favors down the line! I haven’t really been to impressed with them, especially their offense! If Cutler takes care of the ball on Sunday, they lose that game! The Giants are definitely the team to beat! Vick will give their defense fits, they aren’t going to be able to send the house like they like! If they do, they will open theirselves up to big plays!

drummerwinslow
drummerwinslow
October 26, 2010 3:41 pm

In my opinion, Kolb has not exhibited enough ability to warrant another extended “learning” period. At best, his play has earned him a “wait-and-see-what-Vick-does period.

If Vick continues to play well, the team will have no choice but to sign him to a long-term contract. If he’s signed, Kolb will either accept a back-up role or be traded.

On the other hand, if Vick fails to “grab the brass ring,” or gets seriously injured, the team can extend Kolb. Right now, it seems that Kolb’s future is in Vick’s hands.
