I know you are all heartbroken that the Dallas Cowboys have gotten off to a 1-5 start this season. It must hurt even more to see Tony Romo go down for the next 6-8 weeks, with some saying he’ll be finished for the season.
With all of that talent, the Cowboys are officially a train wreck.
Some think that the team quit on head coach Wade Phillips this past Monday night in the disastrous loss to the New York Giants (a quick aside: has anyone ever seen a team look that horrific and still put up 35 points? Not sure how that happens). But, anyone that pays attention to such things knows that it’s career suicide to quit on any team or any coach at any time. That’s why they have film. If you are on film dogging it, the rest of the league will know. It’s a bad idea.
At the very least though, you’d have to think that Wade’s voice is wearing thin on this team. Sometimes that happens. Has he lost the them? I don’t know that. But I do know that this team was a hot mess even before Romo went down, and someone has to be responsible.
So, how long does Wade have in Dallas? Randy Galloway of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram had a pretty good idea today. He says they should just fire Phillips today and see what Jason Garrett can do with this disaster for the last 10 games. No promises, just make him the interim head coach. After all, he was supposed to be the next hot assistant a couple years ago (yes, I’m aware the bloom has come off that rose).
I think that’s a brilliant idea. The season isn’t going anywhere and the Cowboys would have a chance to see if Garrett is indeed head coaching material. What’s the worst that could happen? They lose football games?
I think Wade is a very nice defensive coordinator, but it’s probably safe to say that he’s shown that he shouldn’t be the lead dog. It’s great that the players love playing for him, but this team has no discipline. When you play this poorly and stupidly with this much talent, you can point the finger at coaching.
If it wasn’t time for Phillips to be fired a while ago, it’s clearly time now. But, what do you think? How long will Jerry Jones give Wade Phillips?
Phillips really does suck as a coach but as a Defensive Coordinator, he’s really good. He always had great defenses. Can we get rid of kid McDermott and replace him with Phillips WHEN he gets fired from Dallas? (Or at least next year?)
Do I recall correctly, songs and philly willy asserted that the cowboys would definitely be the class of the division and the team to beat. Funny how offseason predictions go.
I believe J Jones fires the enitre Coaching staff (Phillips/Garrett and everyone else)
Paulman’s List of Coaches that Jerry Jones will look to hire
#1) Bob Stoops from the University of Oklahoma
#2) Gary Patterson from TCU (Texas Christian Univesity)
#3) James Jones from SMU (southern Methodist University)
#4) Houston Nutt – Mississippi and former Arkansas Coach
#5) Jon Grueden – Former NFL Coach/TV COmmentator
Jone’s will most likey want to hire a younger coach who is not a re-tread and one with local support and knowledge of the local Texas Football scene who he feels he can groom his way to be a long-term coach, most former NFL Coaches (who have had success) would probably have a tough time coaching for a President/Owner who is as meddlessome as Jones is.. (Cowher,Dungy, etc, etc would not work for an Owner like him)
I though Jerrah Jones has added head coach to his title on the Cowboys website. It now says;
Owner, GM, Head of Pro personnal, Head of College personnal, Cheerleader Selector, Head Scout, Eagle Scout, Master of the Universe, Head Coach and World Record Holder of the most Plastic Surgeries.
Micah,
I think we’re all missing a very vital point when talking about the state of the Cowboys:
With all the talent they have at the skill positions if they split there remaining games they will have a pretty high pick come draft time. Look, we all know that Dez is going to be a beast yet with all the players we picked up our seconday is still questionable and our O-Line needs to be retooled if we are going to continue to compete in the years to come. My point being is, though Dallas’ season is shot to hell the future is bright in big D and our window of opportunity may be getting a little tighter.
