Marty Mornhinweg Went Through This With Steve Young, Now It’s Michael Vick

You know what player flashed in Marty Mornhinweg’s mind when Andy Reid let him know that the Eagles were considering signing former number one pick in the draft, Michael Vick.  Mornhinweg had coached a quarterback in San Francisco who like Vick was also left handed and also a great athlete.

“They’re very similar”, Mornhinweg told reporters yesterday in talking Vick and former Niners quarterback Steve Young. “The makeup is there on the field as far as talent and ability. Mike has really worked hard to [get to] the level that Steve worked hard at. Steve ended up being one of the most accurate passers ever in the history of the game; first ballot Hall of Famer.”

Mornhinweg had to be having deja vu when he saw Vick’s amazing ability but poor quarterbacking mechanics.  He also had to remember how great a quarterback Young became.

People forget that Niner superstar came to San Francisco in a similar situation which Vick came to Philadelphia.  Young hadn’t spent two years in a Federal Penitentiary for two years like Vick but he had felt like he was being punished in Tampa Bay for two years of losing every week and being labeled a bust.

Mornhinweg and the Niners coaches worked with Young on his fundamentals for years as he backed up Joe Montana.   They corrected similar problems that the Eagles coaches corrected with Vick.  Athletic quarterbacks who are prone to scramble, make the mistake of throwing the football without resetting their feet to throw.  Many times they unbalanced when they let the ball go.

You can’t throw the ball with accuracy if your feet are set to run, but not to throw.  You must reset them before you throw the ball.  Balance is the key.  Quarterback coaches refer to it as the “platform”.  It’s just like a great shooter in basketball, they must be balanced when they let the ball go.

The other issue is their eyes.  They must keep their eyes downfield as they give the play a chance.  Young and Vick talked about this issue after Monday night’s blowout.

Athletic quarterbacks can be prone to playing street ball, which means taking their eyes off the receivers downfield and scrambling without giving the play that was called in the huddle a chance.  Street ball can work against inferior teams but you don’t beat quality teams that way.  Think about the earlier version of Vick and the young edition of Randall Cunningham.

Vick and Cunningham both had great success in the regular season by playing street ball but neither were able to get to the Super Bowl by playing in that manner.

You must be able to play the game from the pocket.  Young was taught by Bill Walsh, Steve Mariucci, Mornhinweg and others to play from the pocket, now Vick has received that instruction from Reid, Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach James Urban.

The Eagles coaches are starting to reap the same success which the Niners coaches were able to see, but we’ll have to wait and see if they can win it all with Vick at the helm.

Young was labeled a guy who was great during the regular season but couldn’t get San Francisco over the hump, after a number of years of losing NFC Championship games to that great Dallas Cowboys team of the 90’s.  Eventually they put it together, beat the Cowboys, then blew out the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

That annihilation of San Diego helped Mornhinweg get a chance to be an NFL head coach.  If he can figure out a way to keep Vick and the offense going, he could might find himself getting a second chance to be an NFL head coach.

The way Mike manages the game now and his ability too get outta trouble really makes him unstoppable. He’s faster then any spy and even if the spy is a quick safety he has a 15 yard cusion too make the guy miss usually. You gotta really respect Andy and Marty for there work with Mike. Seems like Mike is just on a mission in his life…right the wrongs..repay society…repay the Birds…with top notch qb play. And his eyes on W’s week in and week out. Far beyond driven.

Word too Birdgame…and Ninja Qb’s on a mission.E-A-G-L-E-S.

Coach MM will be the Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns without a doubt..
President Holmgrem & MM go back a long ways and Holmgrem is letting Mangini go out on a high note this year and will bring in MM to work with Colt McCoy and maybe even have Kolb next year in Cleveland..
Coach AR will promote QB Coach James Urban to Offensive Coordinator and promote Doug Pederson to Quaterbacks Coach

Landry had a similar problem with Rodger Staubach in Dallas
Initially the Dodger was too quick to run and Landry had to reign him in

Seeing highlight reels of Staubach at Navy you can see why

“Young hadn’t spent two years in a Federal Penitentiary for two years like Vick”….

This is a double negative…. does that mean Young DID spend 2 years in prison??? Gary im just playing. Great job on this one.

stevo – FYI – that’s actually a perfectly grammatical sentence, there’s only 1 negative – “hadn’t”.

Sure, he could of said “like Vick HAD”, but either is grammatical….

Just sayin, Gary makes tons of mistakes but you chose to target one of his correct sentences….(I’m also ‘just playin’, but stil…ha)

Birdobeamen – YES! Thank you!

Paulman – as to your response on another post, I find it funny that you say you also don’t listen to Eskin, and then you claim that you still have the authority to compare him to someone. That’s by definition BS (though nothing ever deters you from BS…). AND then you say it’s cause he ‘whines’ and so do I. THAT is hilarious because all you do is whine about Celek these days (amidst your pathetic stupid predictions)…

I’m not trying to be an adversarial dick here. But you are so consistently annoying.

I grew up in Phila area Schiller and listened to Eskin years ago when he 1st came up…
I moved away in 1988, but my family still lives in South Jersey so I come up once or twice a year and am familair with the local radio talking heads shows and characters..
I am not whining about Celek, I am merely are telling it like it is..He’s a average TE nothing more,
nothing less, I like the guy, he’s an overachiever but last year eveyone got on the Celek as a Pro-Bowler and a future HOF and I just never saw him being much more than a godo, decent TE..
And when I mean “whines like Eskin”, I don’t mean analyzing a players performance, I mean it in a
way that you can’t seem to take another person’s opinion seriously,if it doesn’t agree with your own
or think that a different opinion has any merit, you know what I mean, but that’s ok with me, your a passionate, knowledgeable Eagles Fan who wants to see his favorite team do well and I can respect and appreciate that..

Can you block out this Birdobeamon guy?

He comes on to the site and disrespects everyone, calling people names and attacking them for no reason whatsoever. He does it every time he posts.

Otherwise, I suggest you just ignore this clown, fellas.

Eskin (and his predecessor Steve Fredericks [?]) are/were annoying but occasionally knowledgeable. I am relucatantly agreeing with Paul about Celek – he certainly has not progressed from last year, which may indicate that he is an overachiever rather than a developing stud. I hope I am wrong, but so far this year he seems to have dropped more than his share of passes. Vick seems to have little confidence in him, compared to McGiggles who probably saw him as a way of padding his stats after Westbrook was unavailable.e And yea… that was a dig. I was tired of seeing passes to Westbrook in games when they were down by 20 in the 4th quarter.
