Vick Leading In Pro Bowl Voting And Will Likely Battle Brady For MVP

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is chasing the ultimate prize this season as the Birds try to win it all and he tries to capture the league’s MVP award.

Right now Vick is leading all players in Pro Bowl voting.  He’s got 729,838 votes, while the struggling Peyton Manning is second with 691,146 votes.  New England quarterback Tom Brady follows Manning with 623,074 votes, Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson is fourth with 591,598 votes and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers rounds out the top five with 547,340 votes.

I think Vick’s number one competitor for the MVP award will be Brady, who is having an amazing year for a 10-2 squad.  The Hall of Fame bound quarterback has thrown for 3029 yards with 27 touchdowns, only 4 interceptions and a 109 quarterback rating.

Vick has thrown for 2243 yards with 15 touchdowns, only 2 interceptions and a 105 quarterback rating.  The Eagles quarterback has also run 467 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Brady’s Patriots lead the league in scoring average per game at 31.6, while Vick’s Eagles are second and averaging 28.7 points per game.  The Eagles lead the league in yards per game with an average of more than 400 yards per game, while the Pats are averaging a little over 350 yards per game.

“It’s a great honor, a great position to be in right now, because I haven’t made the Pro Bowl yet, but it’s a credit to my coaches, a credit to my teammates, Mike Kafka, Kevin Kolb, guys who just helped me get through this season,” Vick said. “I can’t do it without my team, I can’t do it without my teammates, I can’t do it without the offensive line, (wide receivers) DeSean (Jackson) and Jeremy (Maclin), can’t do it without them. I’m just thankful to have these guys in my life, these coaches in my life.”

I think Vick’s redemptive story could give him an advantage over Brady, but that’s only if he can lead the Birds to the playoffs.  Brady has the Patriots in better position to make the playoffs and possibly get the number one seed in their conference.  Still Vick is becoming a fan favorite because his personal story is so compelling.

I would imagine that Vick would sacrifice that MVP award, if it meant beating Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

The Birds quarterback has also won over the judge who presided over his case and sent him away to jail for 23 months.  Judge Henry E. Hudson spoke positively about Vick when he asked about him by a Washington Post reporter.

“He’s an example of how the system can work…. He’s having a terrific season…… I’m very happy for him. I wish him the best of success.”

One award Vick is sure to win: NFL Comeback Player of the Year — quite possibly Offensive Player of the Year too.

I guess this shows everyone that Vick is as popular as ever. The next step Im sure is how endorsers such as Nike can market Vick. Vick is a marketing gold mine about to erupt. Vick is the most popular player in the NFL. His fan base is strong and he is winning over people. We are a forgiving society.

He’s the story of the NFL this season no doubt, Comeback Player of the Year and possibly the Offensive Player of the Year too, but with 4 games left and a NFC East Crown to win, The Eagles need to win the East and make the playoffs first, before I think Vick is the NFL league MVP..
The award would be kind of hollow if the Eagles team isn’t a winner once the season is complete..
Does this make me a hater…

In Jeff McLane’s article, Cowboys To Meet A Different Team, a portion of which is below, he references Dallas’ play-calling in the two final losses last year. In effect, it slowed our pass rush and allowed Romo to complete 68% of his passes.

Cowboys to meet a different Eagles team

POSTED: December 9, 2010
By Jeff McLane
Inquirer Staff Writer

The Eagles were dominated in nearly every facet. The most glaring disparity was along the lines. The Cowboys’ offensive line manhandled the Eagles’ front seven in both the run game and in pass protection. Dallas gained 377 yards at 4.9 yards a carry and scored three touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Tony Romo, meanwhile, threw for 523 yards, completed 68 percent of his passes, and was sacked only four times.

The Cowboys preyed on an overaggressive defense with draws, screens, and hitch passes.

Paulman if the Eagles dont make the playoffs I would be upset but not devestated. Maybe its that I know this team has a bonafide stud qb in place for the next 4-5 years with weapons galore. Maybe its because I know this team just needs to be tweaked on the oline and just needs 2-3 players to emerge on defense to make this team a bonafide perennial superbowl contender. I have a sigh of relief that the most important position on the field is taken care of with Vick. Im not hoping Kolb can play, Im not in Miami, Cleveland SF, Ariz etc with no qb and no hope. I just know that this team is a few players away from bringing home the bacon. I WILL not hold Vick accountable if he falls short this year. How dare I! Vick gets a FREE PASS! Nobody expected him to be this good. He has started 6 games in 3 years. He has given us hope. Thats all he needs is for Philly fans to bash him if he falls short and he isnt even signed yet. lol. Hees not the finished product. Just imagine if he gets even better next year. Vick GETS A FREE PASS!

Hallow award? Vick doesnt have to win another game and it would still be amazing. To be out of football for 2 years. Come back and learn how to pass in basically 1 year is amazing. This team is 4-8 with Kolb lets be real. MVP of the league.Only in Philly would it be hallow. Vick does his job. Vick isnt the one giveing up 500 yards every week on defense. Vick played well enough in chicago to win. Ask the defense to try to stop someone.

Remembwer the days when this team with McNabb would go for long stretches with the 3 and outs and punt. Them days are over. I would like to see a stat on how many 3 and outs Vick has. Not many. Just imagine if this defense would actually hold a tem to a field goal every once in a while instead of a td. we probably would be 10-2.

@bsm

Offensive- attack the middle of the field with runs and the TE, account for DeMarcus Ware on every play so as to avoid any big hits on Vick, DJax and Maclin MUST get better seperation at the line of scrimmage compared to the last 2 cowboys games, keep turnovers to a minimum (common sense)

Defense- hopefully Assante will be back and sure up the D-backfield, pressure-pressure and pressure Kitna, blanket Austin & Whitten, tackle better than the Texans game (especially that 3rd qtr), RED ZONE defense needs to keep the pressure up and not play back on their heels

Special Teams- Coverage on kick-off’s and punts needs to be solid to keep the cowgirls in poor field position. We cannot afford to give them a short field after every kick-off

I dont think Vick will be comeback player of the year. He played last year. That award has to go to Wes Welker, who shredded his knee, and missed 0 regular season games. Incredible.

eliminate the Dallas pass rush and give Vick time to survey the field. Create a pass rush on our end, Kitna will throw picks if hurried and he has not a mobile enough QB (like Romo) to make plays with his legs. Very simple, create havoc in the backfield and Dallas won’t score, remember they beat the Colts on two lollipop picks six from Manning. We need to keep T. Choice in check, he has been playing well and seems to also do damage against us.

stopgoat, the same point you made about Vick is the reason why Welker probably won’t win the award…… he didn’t miss any games. I don’t think Vick would win that one either. At worst he has to be offensive player of the year because he’s either throwing or rushing for TDs. There’s no other player in the league that can put on the offensive onslaught that Vick can.

December 9, 2010 9:23 am

If I am concerned about anything, its special teams. I know our secondary is still suspect but with Asante back we should be much better and I expect to get a lot of pressure on Kitna to keep pressure off the DBs. But we know our special teams coverage has been dreadful all year. So we have to keep Choice and Jones in check. Because a couple big returns (which is highly possible against us) will give them great field position which translates to easy points. Special teams has to come up big this week.

Thanks Green.

Everybody is an expert after the game. It would be interesting to see which diehard eagles fan really knows football.

Offense – The unexpected. Pull a Bill Parcels for the 1st half.

Shady and his back up are explosive. Run to the left behind our best linemen. Use the draw to run in the middle and slow down the dallas pass rush. Use celek in the middle and shady on screens to bring up the safety. The key would be patience. Go no huddle to prevent substitution packages and wear down the defense early. Peyton Manning did an excellent job calling a play so quick that dallas could not get their subs on the field.

Defense – Bill Walsh vs Miami (superbowl)

At the time Dan Mario was dubbed unstoppable. His release was to quick. So they said.
Walsh brought heat up the middle. No stepping up in the pocket and a lack of vision. Use Ernie Sims on stunts and take advantage of his speed and strength. Since the hot read would be in the middle have coleman cheat up from his safety spot. He’s more physical than allen and the dallas recievers need the be hit early and often and by somebody who knows how to do it.

The people have spoken, and up to this point, Michael Vick is THE Most Valuable Player in the NFL, regardless of what Paulman or any other person in the minority opinion thinks.

The people have put no stipulation on their thinking. Michael Vick doesn’t have to win the Superbowl to be the most valuable player. He doesn’t have to dance on tables and he doesn’t have to kiss tu-tu.

Game plan should be similar to the one used against Atlanta. We have the weapons. There’s no need to change the plan, unless a defense has a particularly weak point. We just need to mix it up, with off-tackle runs, screens, ends-around, short and intermediate passes, reverses, hitch passes and the occasional down-field strike.

Forgot to include the draw play, but I’ve been saying the same thing before and after every game. With out weapons, there’s no need to deviate. The only thing that needed to change was a counter move to the right-side overload on defense, which Reid has already done. He’s put receivers into the pattern on Vick’s right and has begun rolling Vick out to the right. Now, no defense can overload on Vick’s left.

We don’t change anything until a defense comes up with a plan to stop us. I would like to see us develop a power running game for the red zone. That’s about it.

To BSM&Y

I posted some Keys for Eagles to be susccesful versus the Cowboys on another thread, but to recap

Offensively
#1) Exploit the Middle of the Field with TE’s Celek/Harbour/Avant/Cooper and backs out of the backfield. The Cowyboys are struggling with injuries to their ILB position with Starters B James.K Brookings and S Lee all injured and with a Cover 2 Deep Safety formation that they will employ,
there should be ample space in the 5-15 yard rang in the middle of the field most of game..
#2) Having a better balance offensively and running the ball up the middle has a better chance for success.. Remember that the Cowboys are awful quick at LB/Secondary positions, so running to the edges,end-arounds,wheel routes and screens to the outside may not be as succesful against them as opposed to other teams, but screens and outlet passes in the middle of the field should be open and have some big play possibilities.
#3) Have a few more designed roll-out pockets to negate Ware’s/Spencer’s pass rush and use some max-protection for Vick on a couple of deep routes to D-Jax/Maclin
#4) The biggest key is to convert in the Red-Zone and score TD’s and not settle for FG’s so play calling and the ability to run will be important
#5) As a no brainer for every game, minimize turnovers and the negative plays (Sacks and Penalites)

Defensively

#1) DE’s/OLB’s must stay lane disciplined for Cowboys RB’s (Jones/Choice) like to cut back and look for the big run..He Entire Defense must run to the ball and gang tackle for these RB’s are quick and strong (they are also prone to fumbling if you can put some hits and hands on the ball)
#2) CB/OLB/Safeties must all be prepared for the Bubble routes, quick slants and bunch formations that the killed the Eagles with last year.. CB PAtterson will probably see M Austin most of the evening and the key to containing him is to play physical, close and don’t allow him the space to get to top speed.. Samuel will most likley have R Williams on his side.. 3rd/Nickle CB Hanson or LIndley need big games and watch for Ogletree on the slant, curls, middle of the field routes
#3) Safeties need to be active and agressive versus Cowboy TE’s Whitten (whose dinged and not a full speed) & TE M Bennet who is a big target with more athleticism that WHitten but not as sure-handed
#4) The Biggest key of the Game is the performance of the Front 4, WIth PArker back and having some fresh legs, the Depth of the DL really needs to start shining.. They must pressure up the middle (Dixon/Patterson/Laws& Tapp) and get QB Kinta moving laterally where he is uncomfortable and not edffective throwing the ball. The DT’s must take away the “Step-Up” zone in the pocket where Kinta is most comfortable and where he likes to operate from..When Kinta Gets into a rhythm,he throws a very accurate and nice pass to catch, his best throws are the deep sideline routes, the back shoulder routes and the intermediate tthrows down the middle and I think is very similar to Titans K Collins and Lions S Hill on how he releases the ball and overall arm strength..
If Eagles can sustain pressure up at his feet and make him move around, he is very succeptible to throwing the ball up for grabs, so when this occirs, the Eagles Secondary must make the plays and come up with INT’s.. He throw a few ill-advised passes a game into tight covreage and when he does the Eagles need to pounce on them when he does..

Special Teams
Eagles have the advantage here and this could be a very important factor in the game.
Cowboys Kicker has been shaky, they lost one of the most dynamic return-men in D Bryant for the Season so K Ogletree/ F Jones will take most of the returns and are still dangerous in the open field
I would like to see D-JAx be more aggressive and attempt returning some Punts, the last few games he’s been contetnt on Fair-Cathching when it appears he has had some room to run. Eagles could use a big return or 2 from D-Jax or Calvin on Kick-offs..

Paulman…people believe you are a hater that makes totally pathetic untimed comments based on your constant “wait and see” approach applied to Vick and your reluctance to have that same approach for all MVP candidates across the board. You’re willing to give others who have not locked up anything the benefit when it’s clear Vick is the only player of all mentioned who have yet to have a bad embarassing game to date.

You should hold out opinion on any candidate then…. for if any of those teams like the Patriots or Atlanta lose a few games within the next month they will be knocked out of consideration for the MVP.

That should not only apply to Michael Vick.

You constantly give others the benefit of the doubt and when it’s clear Vick is above others, you place the”wait and see” tag behind every accolade.

Where was your wait in see approach for Philip Rivers before his stock dropped like lead against the average Raiders, or the “wait in see” when Rodgers was lighting things up? Yes, 2 players you immediately had over Vick and gave credit before they proved anything. If you clearly are willing to give credit to others but have a “wait and see” approach for Michael Vick, then we can read between the lines and officially place you in the “hater” category.

You are a Carolina Panthers fan living in football purgitory hating on Vick with your evasive swipes to point out every fault when the going is tough, but is not willing to give credit when things are well.

We see you..Loser.

stop playing the middle to jump on board when the team gets “hot” and act as if you were on board the whole time.

Support Vick while he’s on top. We have the best quarterback in the league right now who’s setting the whole nation on fire and even Tom Brady make it a hobby to follow Michael Vick games.

With Vick I’m all in. With Kolb you were all in.

And your continued hating reveals your true reluctance in supporting the best player in the league right now.

I Love it!!!!!!!!

To Drummer,
I support Vick and think he’s had a phenomenal year and is great human story as well.
But unless the Eagles make the playoffs, I can see him being the League MVP and with 4 games left and tight playoff races, it’s a little pre-mature to be stating League MVP for any player I think..
If Vick continues to play at the high-level he has been and the Eagles continue to win, then we can all talk about who deserves what, but with 25% of the Season still left, I will reserve my vote until the final game of the season is played
There are many good players having very good years in leading their teams from the QB position
to very good seasons. Players like Brady,Rodgers,Ryan,M Cassell and even J Cutler would all have to be in the conversation if their teams continue to win and their play is good.
There are also some indidual players at other positions having great seasons like RB’s A Peterson,
A Foster, MJ Drew , J Charles, and WR’s like R White, G Jennings,B Lloyd
The Criteria to me besides playing at high level and having great stats, is being a leader and leading your team to the post season which Vick is well on his way of doing, now let’s see how he and the Eagles perform in these final 4 games as they march towards the Playoffs..

To Songs,
You are way off base as usual and I am really not sure why you are so fixated on Vick being MVP
I hope that he is, for that would mean the Eagles had a great season, but I have never stated a
winner of the award, but as the season has progressed I have mentioned “Candidates” in the running for the award.. and aas of last week, QB P Rivers & M Sanchez were viewed as “candidates”, now they and QB P Manning have played themselves out of the running leaving the QB’s I mentioned in the above posting still in the running..
Let’s talk after 16 Games and see how all these Players and Teams shake out
If the Eagles don’t make the Playoffs, then there is no way Vick should be MVP over another player whose leads their Team to the Post-Season , Why is that so hard to understand for you…
MVP awards go to players who are on winners and the Eagles are not quite there yet..
I hope and anticipate that they will be, but until they are, I reserve judgement on any awards for anyone on anyteam..

Phillywill you have a point. You know Andrew is going to pass no matter what. Normally.

But the Eagles loss to Dallas 3 times last year, and heads rolled because of it. Front office people let go (heckert) coaches let go (strenth, db) and franchise qb let go. Remember when Andy hesitated to play rookies? Not anymore.

Banner meant what he said when he made the quote about the definition of insanity. Andy is under pressure to win. That is why he had the tirade he did and why starters are being given the hook faster than usual. They will have to do something different to beat Dallas. I am just curious to see if anybody who follows the team so closely could figure out what.

We lost to coach du-fuss 3 times. Their current coach is smart and knows if he wins this game he will lock up the head coaching job. It will not be business as usual. Just don’t know what.

That’s why I am asking the experts.

A few years ago there was a all-american LB drafted by the Jets. He had a reputation for being a big time hitter. When asked by a reporter what was his greated hit, he replied that he had yet to deliver it. He said he’ll consider it a great hit when a medivac helicopter has to airlift his opponent off the field.

That’s the kind of hitting I think we are going to see sunday night, from both teams.
