I was at the Cliff Lee news conference this afternoon and I love the fact that he’s so plain spoken. He made it very clear why he signed with the Phillies and it all made good sense.
He wanted his family to be happy with the place he settled in and he wanted to go to the place which gave him the best chance to win championships.
The left-hander said he never wanted to leave Philadelphia in the first place.
“From the moment I got here from the first day, I knew it was something that was special, something I enjoyed”, Lee said earlier today. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to get another opportunity to come back or not but, the way things played out, I got that opportunity.”
General Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phillies never wanted to part with Lee.
“We all know what kind of impact Cliff had for us,” Amaro said. “He was extraordinary for us. Did I want to move him? No. But I’m certainly pleased that we had the opportunity to get him back.”
The dominant lefthander talked about loving the fans and the energy that was in the stadium here in Philadelphia. Lee talked about there being something special about playing here in the City of Brotherly Love.
Lee rationalized that there’s not a big difference in the lifestyles of a person making $120 million as compared to somebody making $150 million. Personally I wouldn’t know, but I will trust that he knows what he’s talking about.
“When you get a certain point, enough is enough. It’s just a matter of where you are comfortable, where your family is comfortable,” Lee said earlier this afternoon. “This is about winning championships.”
The plain spoken lefthander denied the story that a New York Yankee fan spit on his wfie and that’s one of the main reasons he decided on being a Phillie rather than a Yankee.
“This is about winning championships.”
