Rookie Middle Backer Chaney Must Answer Challenge Vs. Giants Run

Eagles rookie middle linebacker Jamar Chaney will get the first start of his career against the Giants on Sunday and he knows that he has his work cut out for him.  New York has a rejuvenated running game, which saw both Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw run for over 100 yards and a touchdown against what is a tough Minnesota Vikings defensive front.

Bradshaw is more apt to take a run outside, while Jacobs will put his cleats in your chest as he runs over you, if you let him.

I like this youngster because he can run, but I don’t know how tough and aggressive he is.  He won’t have a problem versus the pass or against outside runs but he has to prove to Giants and the rest of the league that he can stand up against plays right at him.

Chaney has got to play downhill this week when he sees Brandon Jacobs in the game.  If Jacobs even looks like he’s going to come his way, the young middle linebacker should attack him.  If he hesitates for even a split-second, it will allow the Giants to succeed with their power running game.

“Jacobs, you definitely want to hit him before he gets started,” Chaney said to Philly.com. “Once he gets started, it’s hard to tackle him.”

The Giants are going to test Chaney immediately when this football game begins.  New York head coach Tom Coughlin is going to have his big, fullback leading up inside on the rookie middle linebacker.  He’s got to step up and make the play.

The young linebacker will also have to strike the offensive linemen who approach him with a forearm, then get rid of them so he can make the tackle.

“I just go out there and try to give it my all every time I’m out there, 100 percent on every play”, Chaney said. “One of the guys I like to watch out there on our team is [DE] Trent Cole, because he goes 110 percent every play, and that’s what I like to try to do when I go out there, just go fast and something good’s going to happen when you’re out there going fast.”

Chaney will be leaning on the veterans to keep him abreast with what the Giants are doing to him when he comes off on the sidelines between plays.

“I would say [LB Omar Gaither] and [LB Stewart Bradley]. [Gaither] has a good overall view of the game”, Chaney explained. “I mean, he’s really smart, so he does a good job of helping me. The last game we played on Sunday, he did a good job on the sideline, telling me what they were doing, what to expect and what to do in certain situations, so I mean [Gaither] does a great job out there.”

Chaney’s biggest advantage will be defensive tackles Antonio Dixon, Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley.  They can make Chaney’s job much easier by not being single-blocked and keeping the offensive linemen off of him

As you watch the game, take some time to focus on number 51 in the middle of the Eagles defense.  If he can step up and make some plays, it will  force the Giants to throw the ball much more than they would like to do.  They want to put the ball on the ground and pound Birds and their young middle backer.

Will Chaney step up and answer the challenge?  We’ll find out on Sunday.

Side note – The Giants have lost starting wide receiver Steve Smith for the season with a knee injury. He was a Pro Bowl receiver a year ago with over 100 catches.  Now it will put pressure on the Giants younger receivers to produce.

He will be better than Omar….The Giants ended omars starting days but stomping a mud hole in his chest. Antonio Dixon will be huge in stopping run also. Jacobs and Bradshaw are due for their normal fumblitits.

Thanks for the article G. I see the play of Chaney as a key to the game. If we are able to do a job on the Giants run game similar to the last meeting, I think we will win the game. If not, we will be looking for making some turnovers. It will be a war, but I am looking forward to seeing what the rookie can do!!

GO BIRDS!!!

Couple of odds and ends about the Giants
Giants Strarting FB M Hedgecock has been out over a month, Giants have Converted 3rd String TE
(Bear Pascoe) as their lead FB.. (he’s still learning the position but has been praised by HC Coughlin)
RB B Jacobs has rushed over 100 yards in 3 Straight Games
RB A Bradshaw has rused for about 200 yards in the last 3 Games..

The Giants are hurting at WR with S Smith out and both Nicks & Manningham still hurtign and no where 100 %, so the Giants are going to run, run, run and relay on there OL who now has
LT D Diehl back and will possibly see the return of C S O’HAra and Reserve OT S Andrews..
This is the healthiest this GIants OL has been all-season and they will pound the rock,
HC Couglin has told OC Gilbride to dial down the Offesnse and play GIant Football with meat & potato running plays to wear out Defenses, then hit the big plays on Play-Action
HC Couglin is not going to have Offense rely on QB Eli any longer and throw the ball 30-40 times per game for when they do, they lose and Eli ends up making some crucial mistakes..
Expect a much lower scoring game and the team that can control/establish the line of Scrimmage offensively and Defensively will win this game… I am predicting a 23-16 Giant Win

with Vick at Qb we are avg about 30 pts a game. We arent the team that is one dimensional (maybe we are, but its by choice!). Anyway, i love our attack and let’s not forget we left a lot of points on that field the first time around. Go Eagles.

Chaney will do fine…… As a matter of fact he will get 10+ tackles in this weeks game……. I have faith in the kid…. He’s fast…. And seems to have a ball hawk state of mind…….. He did notch 7 tackles in which he lead the defense last week against the cowboys………

@Paulman……. What is wrong with you….. Your predicting a Giants win……. Let alone they have alot of men hurting and our offense is putting up 30pts. on an off night…….. I just dont get it……. A giant win…….. I hope you mean a giant win for the eagles to take 1st place!!!!!! THe nerve of this GUY!!! LMAO!!!

The guy is a rookie, so we have a two fold problem. Having not seen him play we don’t know if he is good or not and he has a lot to learn to be able to react in time and space without thinking too much. I hope he is equal to the task and that the rest of the team rises to the occasion to kick some Giant butt
for 60 minutes or more if needed.

It all depends on what the D tackles do. If they play a bad game Chaney will have a bad game. They get penetration and not let the offensive lineman get off blocks and move to the next level, Chaney should do fine against the run. We will see what happens in the passing game. Each week is different and with a different team they will surely try to make him cover at times.

Lol Greenfan…… He just pisses me off with his predictions….. How can you pick against your own team….. Its just NOT COOL!!!!!…….. It’s like he expects failure……. We are the hottest team in the NFC besides ATL…….. Who we beat without Vick…….. Let alone if Patterson was the starter over Hobbs in the Titans game we will be10-3…….

BigE, I agree. I can’t say whether or not he’s going to play well. I think it will depend on how everyone around him plays which will make his job easier. So the real leaders on defense will need to step up big time. Everyone thought Joe Mays was going to be a beast because he could attack the ball. Well look at how that turned out. So I hope the kid plays well. Most importantly I hope our dline plays well.

jroc, he does it all the time. And not because he’s doing it on purpose because when he says we will lose we actually win. I think that’s how he feels. All week, he just points out everything that’s so great about the other team and points out our weaknesses. He talks about all the stuff we did wrong even after we win and hype of the next opponent. Don’t pay him any mind. Seriously.

Who is going to cover TE K Boss who has made all the big catches for the Giants over the last month and always seems to have big games versus the Eagles (as most teams TE’s do) ..
Stop him and force Eli to throw to the outside with hurting WR’s and some good chances for INT’s
this is an importatnt key to the game I believe…

paulman, I agree. We can’t cover TE for anything. I think the Giants are going to have their plays. But if we stop the run and contain the receivers they have left, Boss won’t be enough by himself to beat us and I’m fine with that. I have just learned to accept the inability to cover TEs. Pick your poison. Rather the TE than the running game.

Pman, although i disagree with your prediction. I do like think devils advocate side of your analysis. Giants are a good team, i think we will but they do pose some problems for our team in certain areas. I think we can overcome these issues very easily but who knows what will happen. I like this Chaney guy, he seems to be a pretty cerebral player and has some athleticism to go with it. We should have smoke the Gmen week 11, lets bring the wood and go earn the division title.

TO Jroc,PW,Jakedog and the other regular Posters
I am as big as an Eagle Fan as all of you, I support my team and want them to win every game they play.. but I am a bandwagon fan who doesn’t drink the Eagles kool-Aid and run blindly with all the hype that usually comes out after every win..I have been a fan since the early 70’s and have been let down way too many times before, instead I tend to follow the tendancies of the team,it’s coaches, players and of course their opponents to gauge my feel for a particular game
and in this particluar game, I like the Giants for their D/Line is playing great and now their O/L is heatlhy and both RB’s are running hard and confident.. Bradshaw had a terrible game vs the Eagles 1st time around with a couple of fumbles, Jacobs never got going and was a non-factor..
I fear there will be a double doe of these guys all game long as HC Couglin will run the ball 40-50 times this game and put the onus on the Giants OL wearing down the Eagles Smallish DE’s
Vick is still playing at a high level, but has appeared a little tentative, when he’s had the chance, the last 2 games in running with ball when the protection or Receivers aren’t open, he will need to be more decisive and make some plays with his legs for the Eagles to win this game.
Besides, someone has to be the Devil’s advocate and it may as well be me..
This site would be pretty boring it we all agreed every week about every game..

Which shows how important this game really is this week….it really determines how (or God forbid) if our playoff run will develop…probably the MOST improtant game of the regular season…win and we win the NFC East and possibly get a bye in the 1st round….lose and we “might” make the playoff’s wildcard and would have a longer and harder road to the SB, worst case we could be left out of the playoffs…..this game is EVERYTHING this week….I CAN”T WAIT!! Some things about the 1st game:

On successive plays near the end of the first half, Joselio Hansen made a great play for a near-pick as he wrestled the ball from Derrick Hagan. Then, Asante recovered a fumble by Ahmad Bradshaw. On the fumble, Stewart Bradley stood Bradshaw up and Brandon Graham stripped him. At that point in the season, Bradshaw had already fumbled 6 times. So, he’s susceptible to being stripped.

In the next Giants series, Asante intercepted Manning by baiting him brilliantly. Who was that guy that said Asante is traded next year? He needs to watch Asante’s play. I was never a big Asante fan because of his inability to run support. But he’s 6another player who has changed my mind. He gives this defense some swagger, not from a physical standpoint, but offensive coordinators must ALWAYS account for his whereabouts. You can’t just say okay, don’t throw to whomever Asante is covering, because Asante comes off of his man to make picks anywhere on his side of the field. Who else does that?

paulman

Samuel is the master of laying back and getting to the open spot before a Receiver does,
He is able to do this for he watches a lot of tape and knows QB’s/Recivers tendancies and routes
from certain formations, down and distance,etc,etc.. He always watches the QB’s, where most CB’s
watch the Receiver.. (Dmitri Patterson is starting to learn this as well)
The downside is, that you are succeptable to a double move and pump and if you don’t have deep Safety help coverage, then it’s an easy TD for the opponent..
The other factor is that you have to be playing back a few yards (6-10 yards) off the line of scrimmage to get a clear look at the QB which leaves Samuel vulnerable to all the underneath routes/bubble screens, etc, etc…
This is the Trade-Off of a High Risk/Reward style at it’s basic level playing the CB position and Samuel does it better than probably anyone playing in todays game
