Shanahan Benches McNabb For Rex Grossman

Chaos has erupted in Washington D.C., as head coach Mike Shanahan has benched Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman in the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys.  I would understand Shanahan making this move if the Skins had a young talented quarterback who might be their quarterback of the future, but the fact of the matter is Grossman isn’t even a capable backup.

This obviously signals a parting of the ways for the Redskins and McNabb.  It also shows that the whole signing of the contract a month or so ago was a joke.   Why did Shanahan and the Skins sign McNabb to an extension despite the knowledge that they were leaning toward going in a different direction?

McNabb hasn’t played consistently well and has thrown 15 interceptions which is the larger total of his career.  They’ve lost quite a few close games and this eliminated any chance for them to qualify for playoffs.  The absence of a playoff chance has put McNabb’s starting job in jeopardy, but Shanahan isn’t in a position to bench McNabb because he doesn’t have a capable backup.

Nobody can say with a straight face that the Skins are trying to accomplish anything by starting Rex Grossman and letting John Beck back him up.

McNabb needs to get out of there as soon as he can.  He should ask to be released as opposed to being traded, but we’ll have to see what happens because the Skins will probably want to try to get something for him in a trade.

Now they’ve got a serious mess in D.C.  On the offensive side, they don’t have a quarterback and will have to give away McNabb.  They don’t have a decent offensive line.  They’ve got some old running backs and their wide receivers are even older.

On the defensive side, they’re going to be forced to give away Albert Haynesworth.  Their linebackers are old, but I will give them credit for have some quality cornerbacks and safeties.

Daniel Snyder and Shanahan have got their work cut out for them because this is a total mess.

Fans in D.C. are going crazy. Alot are at their limits and are requesting that Snyder takes his act to L.A. and a new owner starts a new team in D.C. Shanahan is on a power trip and is having some conflict with the front office. Bruce Allen and Snyder are high on Mcnabb and Shanahan wants his own protigy to groom ala Cutler. Shanahan and his overwhelmed Son are pushing back at Bruce Allen with the disrespectful demotion of Mcnabb to 3rd string by saying I do not want Mcnabb around so lets get the point and try and start looking for teams that will give up a 3rd or a 4th for the Qb. Mcnabb deserves much better. He was also on pace for 4,000 yds with average weapons and a pitiful O-Line.

This depacle also makes the eagles trade look even better. I am starting to wonder if the benching of Mcnabb has anything to do with the pick the Skins owe us? Maybe if he has a certain number of td’s yards or games started we get a 3rd if no then we get a 4th or a 5th? Does anyone have insight on the details of that trade?

Side note Lee said passion of fans brought him back. Congrads Philly sports fans you are truely the best that there is. Eagle Nation the closest to us is the Steelers fans in state baby, there is nothing like us. Hell we got fans out there studying and watching over previous game film. Godbless you Eagle Nation, Phillies fanatics flyers fans, and yeah Sixer fans.

And now back to this post, I feel for McNabb a stand up guy, that put the best he had out there for us. I wish you the best Mac as long as you are not in the Division then I am going to have to root against you and send you my bad Karma.

Finally to my Eagles who are set on a collision path with the NY football Giants, i say with full force and fury “GET ‘EM’ then “GET ‘EM” some more until they beg for mercy.

Personally, I love this. Now we don’t have to hear about how the Eagles trading McNabb was the worst thing in the organization. Hell, depending on how things turn out this season, it may have been the single BEST thing Andy Reid has ever done.

Either way, sorry phillywill and Songs.

Well Mcnabb get 3.5 million walking….so I wonder if he’ll take a couple Million next year to back up Vick after Kolb is traded. He can bring a veteran presence in a familiar offence to help us repeat..I said it.

He’ll get his chip backing up Vick and with the defensive weapons we get in the draft from the Kolb trade..this could be a dynasty ……mcnabb retire in style after being welcomed back to the team he helped become respectful since he was drafted…For those who think this is out of the question? Before you deny this possibility …..Did you think Vick would be signed with the Eagles? Did you think he would be an MVP candidate and a better quarterback than Peyton Manning this year?

LMFAO! How did I KNOW you were going to say that? Do you really think he would come back to be a backup man? Be real, his ego won’t allow him to be a backup and his diminishing skills won’t allow him to be a starter. He’s stuck between a rock and hard place.

I just have a question, real talk — no offense to real talk.

If Vick could correct his many deficiencies (more deficiencies than mcnabb imo), if he could correct them in one offseason after coming out of prison — what does that say about McNabb who had offseason after offseason and practice after practice to correct his own?

I wonder if San Fran offered us a 2nd and a 3rd for Mcnabb. They would be at least 2 games better and in first place in the NFC west. Mcnabb would be a great fit with the 49ers. Mcnabb loves throwing to the TE and V. Davis is as good as it gets and they have a solid defense and good run game; also Arizona is always a possibilty

McNAb bwill bereleased and get his $3.5 Million buyout and be a free-agent in which the Arizona Cardinals,San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins will pursue him for his services..
I think he ends up going to Arizona (his off-season home) and signs a 2 year Deal with an Team Option for a 3rd year for about $20 Million with about $5-#6 In Guaranteed-signing Bonus $$$$
I called this over a month ago for Washington was not a good fit for him from the get go, for Shanahan and the Redsksin team.
As far as trade return the Eagles will most likely receive the Redskins 5th Round Pick this upcoming draft instead of a 4th Rd Pick since the Redskins will miss the playoffs and win less than 10 games.

When the Eagles Traded Feeley to Miami for a 2nd rounder it did not work out for miami. Now McNabb does not work out for Washington.

This points to Andy Reid being a heck of a QB coach. (I think he coached Farve in his prime) His starters don’t throw a lot of ints and are productive.

As much as Banner and company have gotten on my nerves, this season proves they know a little something about business and football.

Sorry fellas, I checked the tv schedual and I will be getting the detroit vs tampa game not the Eagles – giants..

But I thought trading the old qb to Washington was the last nail in Reid’s coffin? He was going to go south on 95 and then cruch us like Godzilla twice a year for the next 3 or 4 years, while we plummet to the bottom of the NFC east. He is a choker and maybe now people will give Reid some credit for propping up and coddling him for the last decade. If Akili Smith had come here, and the old qb had gone to Cinci out of the draft, Smith would have succeeded, and Whatshisname would have been out of the league in 2 years. He is Bobby Abreu, a stat compiler who will next win anything, I am glad he is gone.

garry, I expected a stronger article about this since you along with Scorp is a McNabb groupie. This Shanahan guy is a dunce!! Not because McNabb is playing lights out, but its more than one descision! Brian Mitchell was on with Mike Miss a few weeks ago the first benching, and talked about how the team is down on the Shanahans, as well as the fan base down there. Power trip, idiot moves, like continuing to put Joey Galloway out there at age 50. At some point if you have Albert Haynesworth you might want to use him in a way that in good for your team instead of making him do something takes away from his strengths. Last year, the Redskins were one of the best defensive teams in football! This year, with Jim Haslett..they suck ass! You have one of the best Pass Rushing D Tackles EVER, and you tell him to 2 gap in a 3-4, which you dont have the personell for..lmao!….you have ZERO running backs!….Zero threats on the outside…ZERO O Line…but its McNabbs fault???,,lmao…im amazed he has THOSE numbers with Ryan Torrain and the rest of those undrafted bums…NOW WE SEE why he got fired from Denver!

Mcnabb would be a perfect backup for us next year after Kolb is outta here. He’s a better option to come in a game or two if Vick get dinged. This year have humbled him and if he want to come back to a winning organization for less….this would not surprise me. McNabb would be the worst backup ever. He’d be sniping in a passive/aggressive way at the starting qb, Wilma would be yapping about “bittersweet” wins, playing up the whole martyr role that they do so well. The only truly bad thing about the mess in DC is that it did not happen sooner. With him gone I did not realize how much tension he brought to the whole city of Philadelphia the last few years. It is like the sun finally came out after 4 years of rain. “Will Don be back at the end of his contract?” “What will we do without the franchise qb?” “Are 5’s feelings hurt that there are other qbs on the roster?” The drama is over here, I never feel like they are completely out of a game now, with him you could tell when it was a “bad Donovan day” just by his actions on the sideline and his posture. I am not sure at all that he is simply not a creation of a dead on solid qb coach, Andy Reid. With his security blanket taken away, he is melting like a snowman in July. He thinks the city of Philadelphia did him wrong? How does he like DC and the Deadskins now? Kolb is a perfect backup guy, or might yield a pretty good draft pick in a trade during the offseason to shore up the right side of the OLine, maybe a RCB.

Vince Young gets pulled while the Matt Hasselbecks of the world get blown out and has sucked for the past 3 years. But somehow keeps his job. Jason Campbell, nothing special, Hell hes pulled reguarly. a HOF QB among the Top QB’s to ever play in the NFL, no way and not ever close…

“But then I looked at the quality of the defenses the Eagles played and the intensity of the schedule.
Sure, Michael Vick’s numbers aren’t as good. There is no denying that.

But is it Vick’s fault that the Eagles’ defense has allowed 24 or more points in five of the last six games? Vick didn’t allow 31 points to the Bears. He led the team to 26, which should be enough to win every NFL game. In fact, he’s led the Eagles to at least 26 points in every single game this season.

I don’t believe Tom Brady has done that. Peyton Manning hasn’t. Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers haven’t.

When your offense is scoring, you’re winning games. Vick’s Eagles are 7-1 in his eight complete game starts.

It’s not like he’s along for the ride either. He has been the single most important offensive player in every game he has played in this season.

Vick’s slight dip in numbers is not a cause for concern.

The number of hits he takes per game? That’s a cause for concern.”

Throw that race baiting crap somewhere else. The Seahawks brought in a bunch of guys, couldn’t get anyone better or with a clue or Hasselback would be long gone. If I recall correctly they blew a 2nd round draft pick to get a guy from the Chargers and he can’t play dead. Clausen is the 2nd or 3rd qb the Panthers have used this year, he is only playing because of injury, same as Delhomme, the Browns brought in Wallace to qb and he is hurt too. Vince Young had surgery, that ended his season and he is hot and cold at best, do you think they want to rely on 38 year old Kerry Collins? He is a cigar store Indian, OLinemen run faster than he does. No NFL coach in the world would sacrifice a single win to a racist agenda, they are hired and fired based on wins and losses. Benching a decent player for a lesser one could very likely get them on the unemployment line. Carson Palmer sucks but they did win the AFC North last year, who else should they play? They have not got anyone else, and Mike Brown is not going to pay for a quality backup regardless of race, they are the cheapest org in the league. They throw around money like manhole covers. Those teams all suck because the players are not good enough, they draft poorly and sign old, cooked free agents, not because they are racists. G does not want racism to be a topic on the site, that is fine, I usually try to respect that. But if you are going to call organizations in the NFL a bunch of KKKers, don’t make a sly innuendo, say what is on your mind instead of tapdancing around. Stupid, badly run teams are just that, it does not make them racists when like 75% of the guys in the league are black.

Drummer I dont believe that at all. I dont know what it is but I hope it changes. Defenses cant do shit about Vicks legs. Vick can run anytime he choices to. I have watched play after play where he has opportunity to get out of there and for some reason he doesnt. It started in NY and has continued. He has changed. At first they were saying he hit a wall and not use to playing this many games. Doesnt Vick understand that running and putting pressure on the defense is what makes him special. Its eerily similar to when McNabb stopped running. I get all the staying in the pocket and make plays. But when they are pounding you like NY and Chicago were doing I was yelling at the TV and saying run the damn ball MV7. You know what slows down a Giants pass rush and blitz? How about a 40 yard scramble.

All great points Drummer,
A big reason is now teams in ther 2nd half of the season have more recent game tape of earlier season games and can plan better to defense against him instead of relying on outdated notes and schemes from a couple of years ago when he was a run first QB for the Falcons, Vick’s been more difficult to defend because he’s become a better QB in the pocket and has utilized his playmakers
so well, but Vick has taken a lot of hits and has been a little hesitant to run these last couple of games and also the Eagles have played better Defensive Front 4’s the 2nd half of the Season as opposed to earlier in the season and teams like the Giants,Bears,Texans,Cowboys have the atleticism to really get after a QB than do teams like the Jaguars,Redskins, earlier in the scheule..

Before this season began, everyone talked about how brutal the 2nd half of the season would be, and has been. During the off-season the focus was on our defense. That focus has bore some fruit, while at the same time, it has revealed our youth. We’ve given up a lot of points, but we also lead in turnovers.

Nevertheless, Vick is 7 and 1, and as the article highlighted, “[Vick’s] led the Eagles to at least 26 points in every single game this season. I don’t believe Tom Brady has done that. Peyton Manning hasn’t. Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers haven’t.

BSM

Sometimes people try re-write history, but those numbers are indelible.

I post as the game is being played because people often post something totally untrue the next day. I chart the plays because people want to blame one person and disregard many of the facts.

After 12 years, there’s a lot being said that simply isn’t true, but again, the numbers don’t lie. In my opinion, McNabb was a franchise QB, who, along with Westbrook, carried this team. While McNabb had faults, I believe Reid had many more.

Case in point, where would this team be without Vick?

Better yet, where would this team be with Kevin Kolb, Charles Johnson and Torrance Smalls?

drummerwinslow
drummerwinslow
December 18, 2010 6:35 pm

Reid’s being praised for putting this all together. While, I give him high marks for teaching Vick how to play the position, I haven’t forgotten that he tried to trade Vick during the off-season.

What would have been said if Vick had gone to Minnesota and won a superbowl? Let’s take it a step further. What would have happened if Vick had won the superbowl and we finished 4-12? I believe Reid would be on his way out the door.

In what I consider our best game, against Atlanta, Reid ran the ball 54% of the time. Yet, since that time, he’s passed the ball as much as 93% (during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of each game).

The lowest percentage wasn 77% and the highest was 93%. Let it soak in – 93%!!!

Everyone’s talking about Vick taking hits, but few are looking at “why” he’s taking those hits. I contend that he’s taking those hits, in large part, because of Reid’s play calling.

I listened to Didinger today who said that he thought Reid was doing his best job at play-calling. In my opinion, that’s laughable.

Again, I give Reid high marks for play design, and high marks for the first 15 scripted plays, but after that, he goes into a passing frenzy that would get any QB killed. Think about it. Why would someone with Vick’s escapability and speed take so many hits?

Reid likes to call pass plays that take 4-5 seconds to develop, as opposed to 3 second patterns. It would seem that Reid would shorten his routes and call more diverse plays if his QB were taking so many vicious shots.

Reid did the same thing to McNabb. Regardless of defensive pressure, down/distance, weather, even if we were having great success running the ball, Reid called those pass plays.

Regardless of McNabb’s health (broken ankle, broken ribs, sports hernia and the myriad of other injuries), Reid called pass after pass. McNabb stayed getting chased and stayed getting hit and stayed injured. Despite that, he played with courage.

When McNabb was QB, wouldn’t it have made sense to have the best receivers, considering that we threw more passes than anyone in the league? Instead, our receivers couldn’t even have been considered “good.” Sure, we could beat mediocre teams (on the strength of McNabb and Westbrook), but against the upper echelon, we sucked.

Case in point – Ricky Manning!!! I have never seen a situation where a team’s wide receiver couldn’t even get off the line of scrimmage. How is a QB supposed complete passes to him? Then to add insult to injury, we owned them running the ball — couldn’t be stopped. But what does Reid do . . . you know the story.

If Buckhalter’s averaging 6 yards a carry . . . time to pass.

And how many times have we seen post-game interviews where the defense said they knew exactly which play was coming? This didn’t happen occasionally. It happened repeatedly. And it happened during crumch time. Why call a huddle?

When he finally got a No. 1 receiver, McNabb broke league records and went to the Superbowl. Never mind that no one else did anything during the game, somehow, it was all McNabb’s fault.

Westbrook did nothing. The defense did nothing. Offensive line, nothing (especially Hank Fraley). McNabb had pressure up the middle from the very first play.

It’s ironic that when Kolb faced pressure, everyone and their momma pointed at the offensive line. When we lost Jamal Jackson, Kolb had yet another reason to give him another year.

When Richard Seymour “owned” Hank Fraley in the Superbowl, that was completely ignored. It was McNabb’s fault.

When Peyton Manning throws a ton of picks, it’s attributed to his lack of playmakers.

When McNabb throws them, it’s because he’s a bad QB. I’m sure McNabb would trade his entire receiving corps for Reggie Wayne.

For years, Peyton was known as the QB who couldn’t win big games. He finally won a superbowl and he was suddenly the best in the game. Last season, he threw a pick to lose the superbowl. Did he revert to the QB who couldn’t win the big one?

What about his 11 picks in 3 games this season? I’m confused. Is he the greatest or the worst?

I told myself that I wouldn’t waste my time posting, but after reading some of the “opinions,” it became a necessity to weigh in.

drummerwinslow
drummerwinslow
December 18, 2010 8:06 pm

That’s why I’ve been charting plays all season. During and after each game, I point out the trend. For the first 15 plays, we’re great. After that, it’s the passing frenzy. Once the defense sees that, they start pinning their ears back and begin blitzing.

Fortunately, we had two QBs with superior escapability, McNabb and Vick. But when you leave the pocket, you leave at your own peril, especially when they’re expecting you to run.

Defenses sometimes deploy spies and everyone is told to look for the opportunity to take a killer shot on the QB.

Do you think Kolb would have enjoyed the same success, with the pressure Vick’s gotten? Of course, Kolb’s limited with his down-field passing. I won’t go as far as saying that Brady wouldn’t succeed, but he certainly would have taken a lot more hits. There were full seasons when Brady and Manning barely were touched, and it had very little to do with a quick release. Regardless of how quickly you release the ball, you still have to wait until the pattern develops.

drum sounds like he is running for pres of 5 fan club on Gcobb, listen to what he says or forgets to say, vick taking hits bc of reid, bs, vick takes hits bc he runs the ball, to his credit, with below average oline, drum trashes hof rdiddy, yeah right drum, alot of people agree with you there, reid develops longer plays to take advantage of 7’s unique skill set with big play recievers, with 4 at helm, different gameplan, played to the strenghts of 4, excusing 5’s play, pandering to the crowd here, there is no question among the enlightened that this team, this o, far better off with 7 at helm, would be better with 4 at helm instead of 5, see atlanta game, talk to players, talk to hopkins, fighting for light heavyweight championship tonight, really patehetic, crying for 5, the millionaire, now 3rd string qb by some dumbass q who won sb

Every time I go back and look at Supe XXXIX, I can’t help but see that Brady’s jersey stayed clean while McNabb was running for his life from the very first play. Not the 2nd, but the very first. He was taking some vicious shots!

And it kills me when people say he puked. I’m not saying that he did or didn’t, but you have to ask yourself, where’s the video? At the Superbowl, there are more cameras than on a movie set. Why is there no video of him puking?

But even if he did, he threw a TD immediately following the play in which he was supposed to have puked. The 2nd time he reportedly puked, he also threw a TD. With that percentage, we should have been feeding him rancid meat before each game.

I’ve seen many players puke, including DeSean Jackson. That was shown repeatedly, but no one said a word.

I blame a lot of this stuff on WIP. When I was growing up, WIP was the bomb, but it’s slowly morphed from sports, to sports entertainment, to gossip. I rarely listen and when I do, it’s just to catch some of the guests, i.e., GCobb, Didinger, etc. After that, I turn it off. It’s pure garbage, but a lot of people actually believe the stuff they say. Most of their talk is based on personal dislikes of players because of differences in personalities.

Look at the way they treated Charlie Manuel. It went way beyond criticism. I was thrilled when Manuel snapped out on Eskin and threatened to kiss his butt.

Then when the Phillies won the Series, they all had to do a complete about face. I give Manuel credit, he didn’t hold it against them. He went on and gave them a show (the smart thing to do because of the money). But the fact remains. . .

They did the same thing to Vick, but they obviously learned a lesson from Charlie. Angelo quickly changed his tune after Vick’s first two games. Before that, Angelo made Vick out to be the worst human on the planet, someone with no redeeming qualities, and it was a slap in the face for the Eagles to have even picked him up.

They hold onto stuff like that for months at a time, i.e., Barry Bonds. One would think that Bonds was a mass murderer.

How can say Reid’s a great coach, then say he’s got the wrong guy playing QB? Which is it?

Yes, Vick gets hit when he runs, but he runs because he has to (because of the play calling). Everyone agrees that me makes his reads, and runs only when he has to.

Against Atlanta, Reid ran the ball 54% of the time. He has never run the ball more than he passed it.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. In fact, I’m saying just the opposite. That’s been my whole point, better play calling is needed (and not necessarily more runs), just more diverse. Too many straight drop back passes.

Who throws the ball 93% of the time? No one who wants to have their QB at the end of the season

I didn’t trash Diddy. I disagreed with him about one thing. If you read my post, you’ll see that he’s one of the few I listen to on WIP. Of course, because he’s big animal lover, so he vehemently dislikes Vick, but he does his best to stay professional.

Try reading what I post instead of making it up.

Why would I cry for any professional athlete, least of all someone with McNabb’s resume?

I keep the game in perspective. It’s a source of entertainment. That’s it.

I just try to keep it real.

Out of the 1.5 million men currently living in America, probably half have dreamed of playing professional football. Out of those 750,000 men in America, less than 2,000 actually accomplish it. When you multiply that by 12 years, the figure increases exponentially

Of all of those who actually made it past high school, junior college, and college, how many have started at QB in the NFL.

How many have played in 5 NFC Championships?

How many have gone to the Superbowl? The number who haven’t is astronomical.

McNabb has made more than $100 million of “your money” doing what he loves to do.

Yet, in some people’s minds, McNabb is a failure. If he’s a failure, what does that make us?

Don’t fool yourself?
