Comeback Performance Has To Help Vick In MVP Consideration

The discussion concerning this year’s NFL Most Valuable Player has heated up this week and I don’t think there’s any question that Michael Vick has made progress against Tom Brady with the comeback win over the Giants.

Vick’s magnificent performance in the last eight minutes of the fourth quarter against one of the best defenses in the National Football League looked like the heroics of an MVP, but does it put him in position to win the award with two weeks remaining in the season.

Vick’s numbers were again outstanding as he threw for 242 yards with 3 touchdown passes and one interception.  He also ran 10 times for 130 yards and a score.  The Eagles are 10-4 and on their way to the NFC East Division championship and a first round bye.

Brady didn’t have an historic weekend but he did lead the Patriots to victory again, as New England came back to beat the Green Bay Packers and push their record to 12-2.   Brady threw two more touchdowns and he still hasn’t thrown an interception in forever.

He was 15-24 for 163 yards with 2 touchdown passes.  The Pats are on their way to the AFC East Division Championship and a first round bye.

With the way Vick and Brady are playing, there’s no question that this will be a tight competition for this MVP award.  Brady was thought to be ahead, but I hear more and more talk about Vick.

Ashley Fox wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer that she will vote for Vick as the league’s MVP, despite the great year Brady’s having.  She emphasized his role as the catalyst of this dangerous football team.

If you need to get a good glimpse at his importance in the win over the Giants, check out what Giants coach Tom Coughlin had to say after the game.

“That’s as frustrating as it gets to anybody, a defensive team or anyone, to be in position and to be doing what your responsibilities are, and the quarterback just slithers his way out of there or he ducks down, or however he did it,” Coughlin said. “He made huge plays against us and put them in position.”

William Rhoden of the New York Times writes in an article that he’s leaning toward Vick in the MVP voting.  He says the fact that Vick doesn’t get any where near the level of offensive line protection as Brady makes him want to give it to Vick.

Rhoden quotes Vick in an interview on Sirius NFL radio on Monday.

“I just go out and play my game week in and week out,” Vick said. “I don’t want to sit here and say, ‘Yes I should be a M.V.P. candidate based on my play.’ I really don’t get caught up in the personal accolades. I think just to be mentioned in that category is enough for me.

“If I win it, I win it, if I don’t then I’m still thankful that my name was even brought up in the discussion with such a great quarterback as Tom Brady. I’m just thankful that I’m playing football and good football to a point where people are recognizing what I’m doing.”

I’m starting to hear more people talking about it coming out in a tie.  It’s happened before and could happen again.

I found this post (from another site) well argued:

He has Welker, since joining the Patriots prior to the 2007 season, Welker leads the NFL with a total of 346 receptions (112 in 2007, 111 in 2008 and 123 in 2009) and leads the NFL with 7.5 receptions per game.

Branch was awarded the Pete Rozelle Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXIX. His 11 receptions in the game tied the Super Bowl record, also achieved by Jerry Rice and Dan Ross.

Just let Moss go – HOF

Even Woodhead has an impressive resume
Won two consecutive Harlon Hill Trophies honoring the best player in Division II.
Finished his college career with 7,962 yards, which was the most in NCAA history at the time and 9,749 all-purpose yards, which was second all-time.
He rushed for 200 yards in 19 games and scored 654 points with 109 touchdowns.
His 2,756 rushing yards in 2006 is an all-time NCAA record.

Not to mention one of the nicest offensive lines!

Any NFL qb can pick you apart if given time, I’m not questioning the greatness – but what would he do when faced with the Giants front four breathing down his throat – Oh I forgot we did see what happened – a Super Bowl loss

My Blue Print to the Eagles ofseason/Draft
1. Trade Kolb receive a 1st and 3rd
2. Trade a 3rd and Patterson or Bunkley to get a high Second
3.Sign a WR, TE, OL and backup QB in free agency. Plus we have (2) 4th round picks

Draft
Rnd 1 – Top CB
Rnd 1 – Best Avail DE
Rnd 2 – S or CB
Rnd 2 – OL/or S or CB
Rnd 3 – LB/DL
Rnd 4 – RB
Rnd 4 – Best available Def. Player

If Eagles do something simmilar to this and load up on young defensive players in the first 3 rounds our team will be set. We especially need to hit on a DE and CB so that is why I would draft 2 at each of those positions.

If Brady gets it..that award should be split with his offensive line….Period.

Brady does nothing spectacular and he do not play well with a suspect offensive line. Brady would not excel behind our offensive line yet Vick would do even more if those studs were in front of him that blocks in New England.

Brady have a genius as a coach and while Reid is good..he’s no where near belicheck. Michael Vick is the MVP of this team…..

If any other quarterback in the league was playing behind our center, this team would probably be a 6 win team and that’s including Brady.

Michael Vick MVP

I’m just happy that Andy Reid made the right decision Week 3, going forward with Vick as the starter…Everything this man has been through to where he is currently, is reward in itself..with or without the hardware, Vick will be the MVP of this season…

The offensive line is not outstanding in any one faucet. But individually guys excell at certain things. Dunlap was a liability,Justice was really playing the most consistent ball.So we missedhim there. Defenses are bringing zero blitz’s,5-6 rushers. You can only bottle that so much. The o-line has had its momments this year but i think they get ragged on too much. They’re not great and do i think they need and can improve ,yes. Bradys o-line is much better as a unit and i think they’re sched is softer.Jeremy Maclin has been bringin it weekly, wouldnt call him soft. Djax is a Ferarri, cant expect that too be hard-core.. And Avant blew that dudes face up and knocked himself out.Receivers soft?

Drummer, are you actually saying (or agreeing with the article) that Brady has better skill position players than Vick. That is insane. He has a much better offensive line than Vick, but that is about it. Do you think that Welker is that much better than D-Jax? Do you think that Branch is better than Maclin? Do you think that Woodhead is better than McCoy? Take a look at the comparison to where these players have been drafted. And please don’t count moss, because 1) he hasn’t had him the whole season and 2) he gave up long before he left NE. This article leads you to crazytown.

That being said, I agree with the overall opinion of Songs in that Brady wouldn’t be as successful with the Birds O-line and Big Red. Even if you break down the stats, Vick is averaging more yards from scrimmage per game than Brady. If Vick continues to excel, I think that he wins the MVP if the league doesn’t wimp out because of his past transgressions. Brady will probably sit the last game, but Vick will play both securing the NFC East and the #2 spot.

Bugsy

First of all, this is someone else’s post (from another site), not mine. Honestly, I don’t follow the Patriots, so I don’t know. But I do know this, no one can succeed without weapons. How can anyone determine who has the better weapons? We can look at stats, while sometimes deceiving, they’re probably our best barometer.

December 21, 2010 12:15 pm

Bugsy,

Doesn’t the offensive line give the QB time, which in turn gives the players the opportunity to make plays, which in turn increases their stats.

What were Jackson’s stats with a poor offensive line and Kolb at the helm? They were terrible. Is that because Jackson is a bad receiver?

I guess “crazytown” isn’t such a bad place to be, after all.

Obviously, as an Eagles fan, I’d love to see Vick win it. However, I try to take an objective look.

There are more than a few arguments for Vick, but if Brady wins, it would probably be on the strength of his interception rate. He hasn’t thrown a pick in quite a while (don’t know the exact number of games). Turnovers lose games.

If Vick plays solid the final two gamesand Eagles can wrap up a #2 seed with a Bears loss (which will come against Jets) then he will get the M.V.P.
Green Fan – there are alot of GM’s high on Kolb. He is very similar to Schaub. I can see San Fran, Seattle, Minnesota, Buffalo, Cinncinnatti all be interesested. If 2 or 3 teams are interrested that is all it takes to start a biding war. Mortenson also mentioned that the going rate for Kolb would approxinatly be a 1st and 3rd.

BSM…
I have to disagree…DJAX has had 2 fumbles on the year, the one you saw this Sunday was the only lost fumble on the season…That was also the first fumble Maclin has had and lost all season (which really did look like a catch, didnt see a football move)…granted they do play a bit cautious at times, but to call them soft is a bit over the top…

I want to be clear that my opinion of Kolb is not a bad one. In the right system, and with a strong defense, he could possibly succeed. Also, if Vick went down, Kolb could potentially get us over the hump. It’s all about play calling (as in Atlanta).

With that said, he has some weaknesses that can exploited.

I think the MVP is 2 man race between Brady & VIck and that it’s neck and neck with Vick getting the slight edge..(remember the Eagles TV Ratings are Sky High with VIck and I mean National Ratings so the NFL may want to repay Vick and the Eagles back and name him the MVP)
I still think It comes down to the last weeks and see how both players finish

To Godson,
I like your approach to off-season and the early draft selections
I don’t Kolb will fetch a 1st & a 3 Round selection in return though
(more likely a 2nd and a 4th or a 5th is probably more realistic)
I do like packaging one of the DT Patterson or Bunkley with a Draft pick to move up

This is a very deep Draft this year for CB/DL/OLB/WR & QB
It’s so-so with OL & S (at least at the coveted OT position) which the Eagles in good shape there, but need help/depth/upgrades with Interior lineman at the Center & Guard Positions
(remember that Cole,MJG and Wells are all free-agents after this season and will probalby lose 2 of these players)

Paulman’s Top 5 Players at CB

P Petersen- LSU (A Stud at 6’1″- 215lbs who may be moved to Safety, stron,,fast & with an attitude)
J Jenkins – Fla (A pure Cover guy at 5’11”-190 with speed & who could also contribute in the return game)
P Amukamara – Nebraska (Strong, 6’0″-200lbs who reminds many like a Revis,Asamogoah did)
A Williams – Texas ( 3 year Starter, well coached and a real playmaker at 6’0 – 195lbs)
B Burton – Utah ( 3 year Starter, 6′-1″-190 lbs who is long and rangy and a solid cover guy)

I forgot to address this. I don’t see anyone trading a 1st and 3rd rounder for Kolb.

Then again, I didn’t see Minnesota giving up their entire draft for Herschel Walker. I don’t think Kolb is worth a 1st and 3rd rounder. He might be worth a 2nd round pick, with so many bad QBs in the league.

I hear you Drummer…….. I guess AR had high expectations on Kolb to run this offense the same as the likes of a young Matt Hasselback……. Or a Matt Shaub……. But this offense is based on speed and players who can explode at any given time…….. If this were setup with players such as wr’s.. Like what the Seahawks have…. I believe Kolb will be successful…… But with this core that we have now……. Vick is the right pick……… BY FAR…….

After that game it has to be at least tied with Brady. And if he leads us to a first round bye and puts up the same stats he’s been doing, he should win it. He has the opportunity this week to put up some great numbers on a weak Vikings secondary. I hope he goes on both them and Dallas and it’s gotta seal the MVP for him. Also, the Bears lose to the Jets this week and we clinch as well.

With even many of the the top teams fielding statistically poor defenses, it is certain that pass defense is the key to winning. I should point out that I felt the league was slowly changing into that of a running one. Boy, was I wrong. The pass remains the number one way to win, although play diversity and some semblance of balance are also required.

JROC, you know thats right! Lets ship Kolb up and sign a veteran back up while Kafka develops for 5 years! Mike Vick is the BEST Quarterback in this league. I said it before, like I say…Tom Brady cannot win games in the fashion Mike Vick has. Say what you want, but Michael Vick is the best Quarterback that I’ve ever seen. He is simply amazing and I love the fact that everyone is finally seeing what I was talking about. All the Kolb lovers, Howard Eskin, everybody! The MVP race is not even a race to me. And with all the bias aside, Mike Vick is definitely the MVP of the NFL. If he does not win it…Its a combination of RACISM, HIS PAST DOGFIGHTING HISTORY, AND HIM BEING BIASED AS A RUNNING QB. Michael Vick can do anything Brady can, but more!

I think you’re over the top there. I like Vick for the MVP. However, Brady’s accomplishments can’t be ignored.
