Reid Now Has 4 Former Assistants With Head Coaching Jobs, May Add Another

The guy hasn’t won a Super Bowl ring as a head coach, but Andy Reid must know something about developing an NFL coach.  Yesterday another former Reid assistant coach has garnered a head coaching job in the NFL.

The Carolina Panthers named former Eagles linebacker coach Ron Riviera as their new head coach.  He was an Eagles assistant coach a number of years ago under Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

Earlier this off season, former Eagles defensive back coach Leslie Frazier was promoted to head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.  He had taken over for another former Reid assistant Brad Childress, who had been an Eagles offensive coordinator.  Reid has said that he would welcome Childress back if he wants to return.

Riviera and Frazier join St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo and Baltimore Ravens head man John Harbaugh as former Reid assistants, who have head coaching jobs in the NFL.  Spagnuolo had been a linebacker coach here and Harbaugh had been the special teams coordinator for a number of years.

The number of former Eagles assistant coaches who are head coaches in the NFL may grow in the near future because the Cleveland Browns are leaning toward making former Eagles quarterback coach Pat Shurmur their new head coach.

I like Ron Rivera,
I think the Panthers got a good Coach with the energy and pasion to help turn that Franchise around..
Hopefully he can get a good Offensive Coordinator to bring some excitement back to that Offense which has been horrible for years..I am going to reach out for him to see If he will hire me to work for their
Scouting Dept and to help out with their Draft.. .

I think Coach AR is very organized Coach who has his program humming like a machime..
The Problem I have is his lack of adjustments as the games unfold and his game time coaching ability is atrocious as far as clock,time-out,beanie bag management which is why he’ll never be a
Championship Level Coach like a Belichek,Dungy,Tomlin,Peyton and eventually like a Harbaugh will be.
His preparation is great, schemeing and game planning is solid, but when the opposing teams are on to waht your doing, then it’s up to you to make adjustments and he’s never been good at this part of Coaching which is what wins you games come playoff time when your facing other good Coaches..

Hopefully he didnt teach them his clock managment and never using fake snap counts to draw a defense offsides. Whens the the last time you saw an eagles qb go to the line and give a snap count to try and draw defenses offsides?

Did anyone else love the new wrinkle vs the Packers early in the game where J Peters lined up in the backfield, then went out in motion to the left and then went around the end with no one to block.. he looked like a whale out of the ocean What was that all about… Pure genius…

In fairness, if the coaches aren’t successful and get fired what does that show about “Reid knowing how to develop an NFL head coach”? I mean there are always plenty of very good coordinators thatgo on to be head coaches and suck at it. I don’t think the coach they were under should get the credit for “developing” them or get the any blame when they flop. Look at Super Bowl coordinators Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis. Great coordinators. Garbage head coaches.

Coach MM may fall into that category also Scorp..
Wonder if the Eagles can bring Dick Vermiel out of his 3rd Retirement…
If Merrill Resse can still do his Job at a high-level, then why can’t Vermeil take the Eagles back to the Super Bowl

Not Childress, the Viking team was loaded with talent before Childress got there and he/they added some nice pieces in recent drafts..But there are many in Minnesota who feel that Childress didn’t utilize RB A Peterson enough and continually coddled and gave in to QB Farve too often and too easily in which Childress eventually lost the Viking’s Locker room and respect of most of the Players and then when Farve starts playing his age, all shit hit the fan for him…
Now Harbaugh is a differenct story.. This guy is a very good Coach (runs in his family with his Father and Brother) he’s very competitice and a strong passion for doing his job as well as being a good communicator (which Childress is sorely lacking) I think Harbaugh has Champioonship Qualities in him and I thnk the Ravens are one of the best run Organizations in the entire NFL from their Ownership, GM Newsome and his Scouting team are outstanding in evaluating talent that fit their schemes (Lewis,Suggs,Ngata,Reed,Rice,Flacco,McClain,Oher,Heap,Mason, etc, etc) and are not afraid to spend $$$ to upgrade positions of need (Boldin/TJ Houzamzada). They do need to upgrade their CB position…
Being Physical on both sides of the ball and being able to run the ball and stop the other team from running the ball have been a Ravens staple since coming back into the NFL.. It shows that these basic schemes do work in this day and age of high-scoring,all about the QB,WR’s and TD passes that many in the media would have you believe.. Remeber the Ravens have to play the Steelers twice a year and know than any Super Bowl run for them has to go thru Pittsburgh so it’s no real supreis that the Ravens are carbon copy of the Steelers on how they go about their Football operations

I was hoping the Eagles head coaching job became available so they could’ve pursued Rivera. Just wishful thinking.

It seems like almost completely apart from what Childress was doing the organization put together a stinging defense for Frasier to work with, that’s the strength of the team not the offense and that’s what made Brad Childress expendable. I don’t think that Childress is a bad coordinator, but that’s based on the the kind of calls he made while he was in Minnesota, if he actually even called the offense there. He never made any play calling decisions during games while he was the coordinator in Philly because AR was doing that so he gets little credit for those successes.

Harbaugh is definitely a success. I mean Brian Billick was supposed to be an offensive genius and he never created a notable offense in Baltimore over what was it five or six years? Harbaugh maintained the quality of the defense through loss of some players and coaches while simultaneously making Baltimore’s offense at the very least relevant. At the end of the day Andy Reid is a good organizer, but he and the GMs have made enough small errors in talent evaluation to keep them from winning it all. All of the former Eagles coaches have been rightly evaluated because you can absorb organization skills, but each individual will manage the small intangibles of where and who to draft or where to get a free agent and which free agent differently and that’s important and will lead one or more to winning a Superbowl before Reid does if he ever does.

You win Super Bowl with both. Why is andy reid coaching here yet. 1) Does not run 2)does not get missing pieces(wr’s in past) LB’S, QB’s(needs pocket passer no interceptions in playoffs), 3)don’t use players well 4)clock management
Andy, as a offensive genuis, should know running opens passing game, Super Bowl teams run(allstot,Dillon,Faulk ran over us) even Manning only won when Colts ran Brady lost (SB against Giants)cause they did not run,Saints no chance this year without it

Before TO and Stallworth we needed a 1# WR, more players to stop the run was needed all of Andy’s tenure(lol can’t win SB if they are running over ya)
he destroyed Westbrook.Scary thing is he could have been better longer. knowing Westrook is injury prone from the start. he should have had a bruising back plus even with the $ west got doesn’t mean u play him every down and get hit all of the time.
game of inches , clock management enough said

Isn’t Peyton Manning a pocket passer who throws picks in the playoffs?

Bring back Buddy Ryan! At least he was entertaining and our defense smacked people in the mouth.

Better yet, keep Reid and bring back Buddy as defensive coordinator. When Reid refuses to run the ball, Buddy will put a Kevin Gilbride on him.

And let Buddy pick personnel, too. He was pretty good with that.

Ha, I’m right with you drummerman. Just keep Buddy away from coaching the offense!
