Report: McDermott Gets Defensive Coordinator’s Job In Carolina

ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is reporting that recently fired Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has been hired by his former colleague and new Panthers head coach Ron Rivera to be the defensive coordinator.

It’s good situation for McDermott, who is only 37-years old.  He’ll be able to work and continue to learn with a coach with whom he is very familiar.  McDermott will have the defensive coordinator’s title but Rivera will call the defenses and run the defense.

In the secondary, Rivera will have another former defensive coordinator, Ron Meeks running things.  Meeks was the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis for a number of years.

I’ll be talking about it tonigh, Mondayt on 610-WIP from 10pm-2am.

Good!

another 5 years of obscurity for the Panthers. At least that’s one team in the NFC the Eagles don’t have to worry about.

The north carolina fans here in charlotte are happier than a pig is S&$@…….. WOW……. Like Meeks didnt have that defense going in a right direction…… That was the only bright side here in carolina…… A no blitzing dropping defensive lineman back in coverage freak……. Thats all mcdermott is capable of doing…… He’ll be out within 3 years……

They say the world will end Dec. 21, 2012…… Will we ever see the eagles hoisting the Superbowl Trophy?????????? GOSH!!! Just a thought

Congrats to McDermott,
Carolina Panthers is a good fit for him, lots of young players on Defense, Low expectatons and
a solid new HC in Ron Rivera who will bring some Energy and Passion to that Franchise..also working with Ron Meeks who is an old=time steady as you go gut will be a nice balance for McDermott..
The Fuinny thing is, Does anyone want to make a bet with me that the Panthers Defense’s after
the 2011 Season is ranked better statistically than the Eagles will be.. Whose in…

carolina is a waste land until the owner decides that he is committed to winning. Wonder if the assistants are getting more than 1 year contracts (which is what the old regime had as I understand it). But agree with Paul, congrads to McDermott – he certainly put forth the effort.

he has better linebackers and secondary in Carolina….he should fair better than Philly where the linebackers sucked and the DL was worse. stop blaming opie….he didnt draft the garbage he had to put out there….

Paulman I’m with you buddy. Looks like a good fit for them, plus they have a really nice DE in Johnson to build around. So, as for the bet I wage 3 internet dollars!!

i’ll take that bet paulman!!!!

no way the panthers rank better than the eagles next year … they have six games against the saints, falcons, and an up and coming TB team!!! Carolina has no offense, meaning the D will most likely be on the field the entire game getting worked

This hire was simply about now knowing the eagles defensive schemes and how to defeat them. I ‘ll say this, Ron Rivera is no dummy…now he has an inside track as to what the eagles are doing on defense. you can believe that.

I will take the bet Dr Bridge…
Let me know which categories you want to take..

Total Yards allowed per game average,
Total Points Allowed
Red Zone Scoring %
Rushing Yards allowed
Passing Yards allowed
Turnovers Created (forced Fumbles and Int’s)
Total Sacks

i think the eagles will win in:

– total yards per game
– total points allowed
– rushing and passing yards allowed
– turnovers created

we have a very young D and it is probably only going to get younger through the draft … I really hope that they improve their red zone scoring % … it would be hard to do much worse!!! if we can get pressure on the QB from the front 4 (which hasn’t happened recently), we can definitely turn it around though! we need Cole to stay consistent throughout the season … i also think graham can be a GREAT player, he just has to come back strong and healthy! we most likely will upgrade through FA or a high draft pick though

How do you figure they’ll know our defense? JJ and McDermott are gone and somebody new will be the DC; you can’t expect a good DC will come here if he has to run same defensive schemes for Reid… boy, I hope not!! Spags & Harbaugh aren’t running clones of JJ’s defense. The next step after getting a new DC is to draft/acquire some axmen who love to chop wood!!!

Do NOT expect Graham or Allen to be playing much, if at all early, with those serious injuries.

To Talon
Rivera needs to learn nothing about how the Eagles Scheme..
The Chargers have had better Defenses consistently over the last few years than the Eagles so what does he need to learn from McDermott.. Your comment makes no sense..

u know what’s intersesting. out of all the Superbowl winning DTs since 88 the highest sack total was Warren Sapp with 6. their main job is to stop the run.
