Eagles Need To Hire Jauron For Their Defensive Coordinator Position

First of all, the three candidates who are contesting for the Birds open defensive coordinator’s position don’t have resumes like Rex Ryan or Dick LeBeau.  The Eagles need to select the coach who fits best in the situation when you consider the logistics.

That’s why I feel that Eagles secondary coach Dick Jauron should be the leading candidate for the Birds defensive coordinator position.  Unfortunately for the Birds, they’re not the only team that’s interested in the veteran coach, so he’ll have to make a decision.   Jauron is the best choice for the Birds right now because he knows the defense they’ve been playing and he knows the Eagles personnel.

Former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora is reportedly very close to signing with the Denver Broncos. Paul Domowitch of Philly.com spells out personal reasons why Mora wouldn’t be interested in coming to Philadelphia to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

The other candidate whose name has been mentioned is former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis, but he doesn’t have a lot going for him.

Continuity will be a major issue this offfseason.  Due to the fact that there isn’t a CBA between the owners and the players, nobody knows when the season is going to start and how much if any OTA’s and mini-camps are going to be conducted.

Teams that are playing the same system next year that they were playing last year will have an advantage.  It will be nearly impossible to successfully put in a new system, since March 4th will be the last date that players will be able to work out at the team’s facility and with the organization’s coaches.

Hiring Jauron would also be the best answer for the Birds from an economic standpoint.  They wouldn’t have to break the bank to get him inked to ta multi-year deal. and you can believe that the Eagles are fully aware of that.  I would go a step further and say that the Birds may have a clause in his contract which gives them the option of resigning him as long as they match the offer he gets from another organization.

I don’t know it for a fact that the Birds have this option in his contract, but I wouldn’t put it past Joe Banner and Howie Roseman because they’re rather sharp at covering all the bases when it comes to working with contracts.

Agree G – of the three, Jauron is the best choice. Has the experience, knows the personnel, and a Reid guy. I wonder if they brought Mora in, would there be a RIF between him and Reid as was the case when the OTHER Ryan non-linear was coaching in Oakland? I don’t think this defense needs to be blown up, just needs a corner and OLB as well as to get everyone healthy.

Isn’t Jauron a 3-4 guy?

Doesnt matter. 12 years of deja vu why would next year be any different? We had a HOF D coordinator and didnt win. Reid has to go. Only solution.

Jauron is a 4-3 guy… he had the #1 ranked defense in 2001 with the Bears, but struggled in Buffalo….his defenses were very good against the pass, but struggled against the run…I would rather see Mora because the team needs a young, energetic fireball to wake them up….all in all, it doesnt matter since Reid still calls the shots…they will never win with him

Jauron coached the defensive backs who allowed 31 passing TD’s (most in Eagles history) and were a key part of the worst red zone defense the NFL has seen in 25 years. In addition, part of the reason McDermott was fired was the complexity of the coverages which prevented Lindley from getting on the field. I thought we were trying to improve!

Too bad Ryan went to Dallas. We need a no BS attitude in the new coordinator. Why isn’t Singletary being considered?

But Coach AR is not calling the shots..
If he were, MCDermott would still be the DC, and he wouldn’t have fired him unless he had JAuron
in the bag to announce as the next DC.. by not announcing Jauron, that means they are going outside the Organization to hire someone and tells me that GM Roseman is making the call here and not AR

I Look at GB Packers Def Line Coach Mike Tgrovac as a Candidate, He was DC for the Panthers under John Fox for about 5 years, before moving on to the PAckers where he has been the last 2 Seasons.. HE is familiar with both the 3-4 and 4-3 and personality wise is one of the quiet coaches who just goes about his business which fits well with AR..
Others would include former Miami University Head Coach Randy Shannon, Eric Mangini,
John Washington (who was just released in Oakland)

About 3-4 D…. Everyone is doing it so we are better off staying 4-3 but I’m fine either way.

You could bring in the best D coordinator in the league and it doesn’t matter. REID HAS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!
This guy is a clown and is so overrated. I would rather bring in a promising young coach and lose for a while, than to have my heart broken year after year by poor game plans and “huhum I need to do a better job” WHEN IS THIS GUY GOING TO BECOME ACCOUNTABLE FOR ALL THE CHOKING THIS TEAM DOES!!!WHEN??

Randy Shannon? Seriously?

Randy Shannon at Miami has recruited, coached up a lot of young players who have become good NFL players like R Lewis,E Reed,J Vilma,J Beason to name a few and a host of others..
He has a keen eye for talent and a great personality to communicate with todays younger players.. I think he eventually has HC potential down the road, but his specialty and passion is on the Defensive side of the ball and think he would be a great hire and what the Eagles neesd instead of a re-tread like a D Jauron/J Mora Jr would be..
Mike Trogovac did an excellent job while with the Panthers for years before being let go 2 years ago.. He can’t help that Carolina’s Offense is so putrid.. Now for the last 2 years he’s coached the DL up in Green Bay and is working with D Capers in the 3-4 Scheme.. Trgovac has experience in both systems and the Eagles and Coach AR loves people from the Green Bay organization..
Trgovac would be an excellent hire…

And what has Randy Shannon done the last five years? Those players all came out before 2005. He couldn’t even win in the terrible ACC….why would we want a guy who failed at college coaching our defense? Yeah let’s bring in a guy who led his teams to the Emerald Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl the last two years!

Jauron has proven he can do it in the NFL (although he’s not my first choice)….Shannon is a joke and your credibility for suggesting him is now in question.

Can someone please tell me why Jauron is the best guy? He was responsible for one thing this year; the secondary and based on the stats, they couldn’t have been any worse. So why would he be any better at handling an entire defense that needs a ton of work? I want a hard nosed guy in here. Maybe we should give Tom Cable a call.

Look I see it as….. If Jauron is our defensive coordinator it would be a plus because he uses alot of cover2 blitz scheme and stripping the ball from the opposing opponent…… he has a good record of getting corners to be aggressive and get alot of turnover’s int’s, fumbles etc……. But what he did have in chicago was a good pass rush……… Something that we lack because we are so under-sized……. and Mcdermott didnt like to move men around……

I was listening to the WIP Morning show and Reuben Frank was on saying He believes Mike Trgovac is a darkhorse candidate. Hugh Douglas sounded excited and says a lot being that he played for him. Of course the Eagles can’t talk to him yet being that the Packers are still playing.

U know whats funny……. Everyone here at my job in Charlotte is asking me……. “Why you guys fire Mcdermott”?, “Is he good?”, “We dont want him if he’s not going to produce”!…… LOL!

Panthers haven’t had a winning season in the past few years…… Meeks I think was the only bright side of that whole franchise….. Other than Kicker Jon Kasay…… LOL……

What we need is an emotional leader on the defensive side of coaching…… A guy who can have fun with his defensive players and get fired up when something good or bad happens……. I like coaches like Mike Tomlin and Raheem Davis who show there emotion’s on the sideline…… Even Dick Lebeu shows emotions…… Who ever can give this team that fire and desire to…………. LIKE ARSENIO HALL say’s……. “STRIVE @ BE #1″…… I’m all for it…… GO EAGLES

The teams who run a 3-4 defense are almost every year the top 10 in the league! Or are a decent defensive team……..
Not in order!
– Steelers (Need I say MORE)
– Ravens (Need I say more)
– Patriots (Have cheated for the past 10 years…. This was the only season they actually played real football) Defense was pretty bad…… But young…… They’ll bounce back!!!!!
– Jets (Need I say more)
– Dallas (This was a bad season for them….. But they have been pretty good through the years)
– GB (Good defense….. Alot of players hurt but find away to play good…… Primarily Don Capers)
– 49ers (Defense is good but offense puts them in bad positions)
– SD (Good have been solid for some years……. With Juan Rivera gone who knows now???)
– KC (Good young team who surprised everyone……. The’ll be conteners for years to come… Well coached as well)
– Cleveland Browns (had a better season on defense than previous seasons…… big ????? without Rob Ryan)

Maybe if the CBA could reach a deal…. Maybe we’ll make some trades and get the right players to fit a 3-4 scheme……. the nfl draft will play a major part as well……

We have a ton of speed with the current Lb’s we have with Chaney and Clayton…… With Fouko and Bradley who knows???? Maybe 3-4 could be an option this season…… Brandon Graham played in a 3-4 scheme when he was with Michigan…… We’ll see who they’ll hire?????

I wouldn’t mind Trgovac. But I also wouldn’t mind Mangini. Ellis Hobbs had some very high praise for him on DNL last night. I know Hobbs probably wont play again but just for a player to have suck high praise for an old coach is nice to hear.

He was a top flight D-coordinator, he just didn’t do so well as a Head Coach.

and for the Record about Randy SHannon from Miami,
He was on the Defensive Staff/LB Coach for the Dolphins 1998 theu 2000 and then was hired as
Mimi’s DC in 2001 by then U of Miami Cocah Larry Coker and in the 6 Years he was D/C
the Miami Hurricaines were ranked in the Top 7 in Defense for 5 of his 6 Years He was DC
Take a list of some of the Defensive players he helped recrui & coached

Safety Postiion — Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Kenny Phillips,Andre Rolle & Brandon Merriweather
CB Postion – P Buchannon, M Rumph, J Joseph,
LB Postions – J Vilma, DJ JOhnson,R McIntosh, J Beason,
DL POsitons – V WIlfork, C Campbell, A Dixon,B Pata, J McDougle, J Green

I think the man’s record as a DC stands for itself, he may not be good as a HC or on the Offensive side of the ball, but he knows how to coach a Defense and knows talent and how to put those players in positions to succeed..

@jroc

You make some good points with out LB core. Graham is a 3-4 guy. Cole could play the Terrell Suggs role in a 3-4. The one big thing the Eagles would need is a NT. Haloti Ngata is a free agent. I know he will be expensive but he is the guy that could fill the middle. We have the 3-4 talent more so than 4-3 talent.

It will be interesting on how they handle it.

It’s ironic that 3-4 teams that are in the playoffs play a 3-4 defense……. Maybe the 3-4 defense is the key to success…… Notice that the good Qb’s struggle against 3-4 defense…..

Peyton Manning……. Struggled against the jets, patriots, Ravens, Texans, SD, and etc….
Drew Brees……. The ravens put out a good strategy on how to slow him down…….
Tom Brady….. Struggled against the Jets and Browns this season…… Killed 4-3 defense this season Chicago anyone…….???????? EXAMPLE
Joe Flacco……… Struggles against the Steelers (But who doesn’t)………….
Lot more Qb’s but im not going there lol!

@paulman….. I think 3-4 will be great for this team……. Besides that we get a beast NT…….. use trent cole as a Demarcus Ware type player……. Keep Bradley and Chaney as your middle linebackers……. Make Graham your outside pass rusher…… Or Fouko or Clayton…….. We can cause problems and let go of Patterson and Bunkley……. We need some real round houses in the middle of this defense…….

Hey guys

Just wondering if anyone has notice that the majority of the teams that made the playoffs this year and in the previous few years have head coaches that are defensive minded. They served at some point as defensive coordinators somewhere. And the head coaches that are offensive ones usually have a very good defensive coordinator e.g Sean Payton and Greg Williams, Mike McCarty and Dom Capers. But I just thought it was interesting to note that. It seems that in many cases, in big games, Andy is either matched up against a defensive minded head coach or a very good defensive coordinator. More recently, not matched up with an offensive minded coach who has a “so-so” coordinator. We usually meet those teams in the regular season. Beat them and lose to teams structured around defense. What do you guys think? Just a coincidence?

And then I’ll pose the question….how many college coaches are successful in the pro’s? As head coaches or assistants? Randy Shannon would be the worst hire of anyone mentioned!

Jauron would be our best hire because he already knows the players and with a lockout looming, you don’t want a new coach coming in here trying to hit the ground running in July or August. And if he were really a favorite in Cleveland, he would have signed there already. Jauron is absolutely the guy going to be hired as our DC.

I am not saying the Randy Shannon is a Coach of the Year Candidate, but when you say the man
can’t coach a Defense, I have to call you about it for you don’t know what your talking about if you look at his record and his accomplishments….

To Scorpion,
They still say that “Defense still wins Championships” and teams with Defensive minded Coaches
like a Belichek,Dungy,Lovie Smith,Cowher,Ryan,Tomlin,Coughlin,Fisher will definitely emphasize that side of the ball more which seems in the end, to beat out the Offensive Guru’s Head Coaches more times than not..
Look at all the great offensive minded coaches that have not won a Championship..
D Coryell,Dennis Green, Norv Turner,Andy Reid, Sam Wyche, Steve Spurrier, and of Course the
Offensive genius that was Richie Kotite…

paulman, I agree. And the offensive minded coaches surround themselves with a very good defensive coordinator. That’s what Andy did with JJ and now he’s not here anymore, he’s being exposed. We had a great special teams coordinator in Harbaugh, great defensive coordinator in JJ and very good offensive coordinator in Chilly. It’s no coincidence that now they aren’t here this team is either just bad in certain areas or not as efficient.

A big key with 3-4 is in a 4-3 u have 4 guys coming at QB. in 3-4 the fourth guy coming is a fast LB and when u send 5 there is 2 fast LB’s going to qb

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
January 18, 2011 1:02 pm

tydm, I think that also has to do with who you blitz. We used our secondary very heavily in the blitz and our LBs less than what I thought we should. For instance, Ernie Sims can’t cover anything but is fast as many safeties. Why not have him chasing down the QB? Instead we’re running CB or safety blitzes. But when you say the 4th guy coming is a fast LB, that depends. Listen to the guys around here they are saying line Cole up as a LB as rush like Ware. He’s a DE so that’s not having the 4th guy being a LB. That’s just having your DE not put his hand on the ground.

If the Eagles keep Vick which they will going to a 3-4 will be a mistake. Its takes 2-3 years to make the adjustments to be successful. On top of that the NFL always goes through fads. Right now 50% of the teams run a 3-4 soon that curve will be back to the usual 4-8 teams. 4-3 is the way to go for the Eagles.

@ paulman….Randy Shannon had a decent run as DC of Miami. Does that make him even remotely qualified to run an NFL team trying to win a Super Bowl? Absolutely not. I never said the man couldn’t coach defense….I just said he would be the worst possible hire and shouldn’t even be in consideration. I also said, for him to be running that team in the ACC and not dominating it, should also speak very loudly. Now for you to suggest his name, and his name hasn’t been mentioned once for ANY NFL coaching vacancy, does that count in that fugazi 36%?

Defense is a priority on a team. If you can stop the other guy, you always will have chances to score no matter how average the offense is. But if your team can never keep the other out of the end zone (like Eagles this year and last) no amount of offense can continually outscore the other team.

Defense is absolutely key this offseason, so we better get a well-rounded experienced DC in here, and keep him here during the defensive reorganization the next 2 years. Get a solid OG if either Jackson is ready or McGlynn can improve more, or find a new center and slide McGlynn to guard. The OC MUST make better use of RB’s and help block blitzers when necessary.

Unless this team is a TRUE superbowl contender by 2012, Reid better be gone. If there is no top HC material ready to take over this team and improve it, might as well keep AR one more year. Oh… and no 18-game season!!! Besides, if we’re still not in playoffs end of January, I’m ready for the Flyboys’ second half march toward the Cup… and that looks good this year!

The Eagles need to hire someone who will stand up to AR and I agree a veteran coordinator would probably be best. paulman

AR would love to hire an experienced DC and not have to worry about the Defense 1 iota…
It’s what he did when JJ was here, paid little attention to that side of the ball , which is part of the reason of all the Problems facing this Eagles Defense now
Years of neglecting the LB and DE postions have come to roost.Coddling former #1 Picks Patterson and Bunkley when they clearly were underachieving instead of calling them out and or replacing them.
Coach AR has only gotten active on the D Side of things since JJ’s passing, but he did very little when JJ was Coaching and this Defense has been slipping from the last 4 Seasons..
It’s an area that he is not comfortable in so he better get an expereinced Coach to run things or their Defense will be in worse shape than I thought…
