The Delaware County Times reported earlier today (and was followed up with an official press release) that Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren will receive a three-year, $4.5 million extension. It’s well deserved considering the success of the team in his tenure.
Early in my tenure on this site, I wrote that he should be on the hot seat after the Simon Gagne trade for Matt Walker and a 4th round draft pick. It was a knee-jerk reaction to the loss of a great player and one that I regret writing.
The truth is, Holmgren is an excellent read on hockey talent and has built a team that can succeed with a coach that provides the Flyers with the best chance of bringing back the Stanley Cup in 36 years.
If there’s any complaint, it’s his management of the salary cap. He’s been fairly reasonable with regards to the contracts he’s offered himself (although Jody Shelley is arguably overpaid), but much of the talent he’s acquired over the years have come with a hefty price tag.
Defensemen Andrej Meszaros ($4 million), Matt Carle ($3.4 million) and Matt Walker ($1.7 million) have added to any already well-paid defense. The defense has been great this season for the most part, so you can’t be too upset. It just limits the team’s options if they want to pursue other players as the season progresses.
His drafting in the last few years has also left a bit to be desired, but the lack of high picks was the result of very talented players acquired in trades. It’s difficult to be upset about losing two first round draft picks when you’ve got Chris Pronger on your team and it’s unlikely you’re going to tailspin into mediocrity (*cough* Devils *cough*).
The organization is in good hands with Holmgren at the helm.
