C/G Mike Pouncey Would Be A Great Pick For Birds In The 1st Round

Bloodlines are something that is taken seriously when teams are approaching their draft board.  Teams feel that players who have other NFL players as relatives are more likely to make in the NFL than others who don’t have in relatives with pro football experience.  That thinking has never meant more than it does with Florida guard/center Mike Pouncey.

Mike happens to have a twin brother, Maurkice, who was drafted in the first round last year and is currently the starting center for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Maurkice has been everything the Steelers could have wanted and more.

He’s about the same exact size as his brother, 6’4″ 310 pounds, and he’s just as driven and tenacious.  The young man is bright and disciplined which is what you need from your offensive linemen.

I don’t know about you guys but I’m tired of the Nick Cole, Max Jean-Gilles duo working at the right guard position.  The Birds are still a good screen team but they would be a great one against with the Pouncey in there at right guard.

I think he would be a great pick for the Birds at the 23rd spot in the first round.  I could see Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg taking advantage of his athleticism, by getting him outside leading plays on the corner.  This guy was made to pull and leak through to pick up linebackers.

Like his brother Pouncey weighs well over 300 pounds but has the body fat of a linebacker.  He would be a great fit for the Birds because he’s a great athlete as a center and guard.

He could get out in front of LeSean McCoy on screens and sweeps outside.  Pouncey would have no trouble escorting McCoy down the field on screens in much the same way Shawn Andrews used to run with Brian Westbrook on those screens.

The only problem with Pouncey is that he made be drafted before the Eagles have the chance to grab him.

I think Pouncey unfortunately goes to the Giants who are getting old across that O/Line..
I like Camrini at OT as a consolation if Pouncy is taken…

Mike and Marquise are my cousins. Like I said in a previous comment, I was praying the birds would have taken Marquise last season, never happened. We moved up to get a bust instead. Lets all hope we don’t make the same mistake. Mike will be a dominate Linemen in this league just like his brother. Mark that down

I was one of the few last year hoping that Eagles were going to Draft Cente Maurkice Pouncey where he could have been a 10 year starter from day 1 at Center (which was a position of need) and then
McGlynn/COle/MJG fight it out for RG which I would like McGlynn chances..
I remember being ridiculed/crticized from others that it’s stupid to draft a Center in the 1st ROund..Whenever you can get a 10 year vet who can be a Pro-Bowler and any position, you have hit a gold mind…

Maurkice* Have always done that. Anyone who criticized taking a center in the 1st round clearly has no intelligence the way this game is played. Center in my opinion, is the most important player on the OLINE. Notice how I said not the highest paid.

Just because his brother is good don’t mean he will be. Nothing is a given in the NFL..even bloodlines. The only s siblings I think that were ever as good as eachother were the Gramaticas!

Going with your consolation pick of Gabe Camrini although I think he project better than
Pouncey and may also be gone before we pick. They should also look at his Oline coach Bob Bostad he is probably available, he reportedly interview for a lateral move to Texas. I think he is the best Oline coach in college football right now, and the combination of him and Camrini would give us a good punch.

I agree CT,
Look over some of the really good teams over the years, they’ve all had a stud Center’s who is really like the QB of the entire O/Line
Steelers – M Webster
Raiders – J Otto
Cowboys – Can’t remember his name
49ers – Can’t remember his name
Colts – J Saturday
Dolphins – D Stephenson
Jets now have N Mangold, Steeler now have Maurkice Pouncey

All Pro Centers who can play for 10-12 years don’t fall off of apple carts..

Bob Bostad from Wisoncin is an excellent Coach and has done a great job at the Wisconsin Program.
Camrini is NFL Ready and probably a RT for most NFL teams.. The Issue is with his pass protection
and a RT would be Vicks Blind Side so I am not sure if the Eagles go that route..
Wonder if there is a possibility that LT Peters would move to RT to cover VIcks Blind side..
I am sure he can play there and am curious if the Team/Coach AR have given this any thought..
Camrini has the edge as the best run-blocking Tackle out of the draft, the problem is that the Eagles don’t run it the least and really need OT who are better at Pass-Protecting lke a N Solder,
D Love, N Potter, A Constanzo, M Reynolds are ….. just a thought..

My hope is that we will run the ball of course; but with the turnstile that is Winston Justice I am convinced Mike Vick doesn’t have a blind side. This guy can really throw pancake blocks and he has a nasty streak in him. The idea of moving Jason Peters to the right side isn’t a bad idea, I really think he had a great second half of the season and was finally living up to his contract.

——-

I think this might actually turn out to be a big deal but for a different matter. I think if hes still there at 22 the colts will take him as the replacement for the aging Jeff Saturday. Pouncey has been my choice for our first rounder for weeks now but i think we may have to trade up to get him.

i would love to see the birds take maurkice or camirini if either one is on the board and i believe that the eagles should bring john runyon in to help out with the oline coaching.. show these salies we got in here how to mean physical and occasionally spit in ur face.. andy needs to get back to where he was in the draft by getting it done in the trenches.. the birds left side is solid i believe and will get better even next year.. center is ok i think mcglynn will be better this year.. pouncey at right gaurd and improved justice we could be great

I would love to see them take Pouncy but like I said on other posts about him, I just don’t think he’ll be around when we pick. Phillystros Big John is in the house of reps now so I don’t think he can help. That is if your talking about #69.

It would be great to upgrade the guard position. Its too bad Shawn Andrews had all those issues. He was fun to watch sometimes. I wish they had some more mean guys out there that are also athletic.

I would love to have Mike Pouncey. The 5 people I want the Eagles to draft most, in order are…..

1. Mike Pouncey
2. Gabe Camiri
3. Brandon Harris
4. Ras-I Dowling
5. Akeem Ayers

If they can’t get Pouncey in the 1st, there is always a chance they could get another stud G/C in the 2nd, like Stefan Wisniewski, nephew of All-Pro Steve Wisniewski, formerly of the Raiders.

The 5 I listed are the people I want them to target in the 1st. Not that I think they can get all of them. They are the only 5 that I think would be worth drafting with their current pick in the 1st round that could still possibly be there. If they move up, that is a different story.

Just read this and I wanted to post this for a couple reasons…….

1. Neither team might get him. He said he might not accept another job with another team. That would kinda blow.

2. This is a quote in that article from Trgovac “John and I’s relationship was great. I know it’s been written a lot of times in Carolina that I was fired. I was not fired. Our relationship was great”. Apparently he left for “family reasons”.

Nice try Paulman.

To Sports Bum,

1)Ayers probably goes1st and probably gone by the #15th pick (Titans,Texans,Lions all like him)
2) Pouncey/Cabrimi go by the #20 Selections (Cowyboys,Redskins,Giants,Rams,Patiots all)
3) B Harris will be around the 25# Pick and most likely available for the Eagles to select
4) Ras Dowling will be a mid 2nd Round Selection most likely around the 45th Overall Selection
with the Titans,Cowboys,Lions,Rams,Dolphins and Jags all being interested in him

TO Sports Bum,

TRgovac and his entire Staff was Fox and was made out to be a Scapegoat by the PAnthers a couple years Back.. I live in NC and followed the story closely..The Owner demanded that Coach Fox get rid of some of his staff for he felt they were getting stale (which they were) Most in local media
wanted the Offensive Coordinator to go (Jeff Davidson) but Fox chose Trgovac which he was not happy about.. but anyways, that 2-3 years agao and the COaching circles are a close and tight group and you rarely ever hear any Coach talk negative about anothe Coach for it’s not good to butrn any bridges in a small exclusive occupation like the NFL, so the fact that Trgovac says everything is fine with him and Fox is what you expect him to say and the politically correct thing to say

Things are not what they always seem to be Sports Bum and sometimes you have to peel off some layers to get the real scoop…

Pouncy would be my # 1 pick going into the draft. Seeing as Miami needs a RB and can draft Ingram at 23, maybe asome wheeling and dealing can get them up to 15?

I would be 100% on board with taking Pouncey at 23. I was really big on his brother last year and all he did was make the pro bowl as a rookie. I like the way the Jets have built their O-line into one of the best in football!! Their best and most valuable line man, in my opinion, is Nick Mangold, who was a first round pick. Pouncey can play either guard or center. That said, I doubt they take an interior offensive lineman in the 1st round. Other guys I like at 23: Carimi (OT), Heyward (DE), Watts (DE)

I cant see them using their 1st round pick(if they dont trade down) on anything but an offensive lineman. Even though Reid/FO like to try and show off their mental fortitude and do the last thing we expect them to do on draft day I really feel there is no way they dont take a lineman and I wouldnt be surprised if they take 3-4 more after that later in the draft

Paulman, 1988 49ers had Cross for center, 1989 was Sapolu, 1994 was Oates and Sapolu was LG and both Pro bowlers that year. interesting oates was undrafted and Sapolu a 11 rounder (286th pick)

comparing the (HOGS) redskins 0-lineman like Jacoby, Eric Williams and Cowboys 0-line, and recent Steelers Super Bowls o-line on all three rosters it seems 2 of starting lineman were undrafted, mostly 3,6,10 rounders i seen maybe 1 first rounder and 1 2nd rounder….kind of interesting

Okay Paulman, Mr. Know-it-all. I live in Philly yet you always try to tell me stuff about the Eagles, so does this mean that you don’t know as much as me about the Eagles, since you don’t live here? LOL, I wanna see your spin on this one.

To SB,
I grew up outside of Philly and have followed the Eagles,Phils,Flyers & Sixers since I was a kid
(I am 47 yeard old now) and even though I moved away, I still follow the Eagles & Phils closely..
I am a Football and Baseball junkie so I try to keep up with all the teams and around leagues but will always root from my home town team..

I did not say that Sports Bum, it sounds like you are saying that ..
All I said is that I follow the Eagles closely and the entire NFL for that matter..
but I didn’t say anything about on who you or anyone else chooses to follow or how closely or not
you choose to follow… How would I know and why would I care…

SportsBum

January 22, 2011 8:41 pm

Also want to add….. I grew up INSIDE Philly. I figure I point that out since you think that how close you live to somewhere some how has any effect on how much you know about that team. Again, doesn’t that seem a little stupid?

You posting on here that you somehow follow every team closely, like you follow them closer than anyone else when you couldn’t possibly know that considering that you don’t know me personally is about as dumb as you posting your asinine predictions/reports on here without any evidence to back it up, other than your “sources”. You throw enough sh!t on the wall, something is bound to stick, so I don’t want to hear for the 100th time how you said 1st about Trgovac being a possible candidate. Why don’t you repeat over and over again about ALL the things that you predicted wrong?

Listen, I don’t care you post here or post your asinine predictions/reports here. I am just tired of you acting like you are superior to everyone else like everything you say is right and what everyone else says is wrong. I constantly see you responding to people about how what they said, there is no way it will happen, yet you continue to post your stupid sh!t and think people are supposed to listen to you and take you seriously.

Just to use an example of what I am talking about, just so you see where I am coming from.

I posted in the one thread (Reports: Jauron Soon To Be Announced As New Browns Defensive Coordinator) about me suspecting that Trgovac is gonna go to either the Eagles or the Broncos, which is an opinion (my opinion), and you seemed like you couldn’t accept that so you had to correct me by saying that there is no way he go to the Broncos, because Trgovac and Fox had a horrible separation. So, I post in here (by accident) and in there a article in which he says the complete opposite. Now again, you come back with how you live in NC and know more than me because you live there and follow it closely, like somehow I am supposed to go by your word instead of Trgovac himself. Of course you would spin it so you don’t look like a fool, again trying to act like you are superior, or you know everything.

Just sidestepping this for a sec. I like how the one report where Garry corrected about the Eagles waiting to interview Pettine, which wasn’t true. You responded in that thread for G to say how he didn’t get that from you because your “credibility has taken enough shots as it is”…. LMAO, seriously? You live on this site, don’t you?

Anyway, back to what I was saying…… So, you corrected me twice, not accepting MY OPINION, because it isn’t what YOU believe. Why do you feel like everyone should be praising you somehow or for some reason? Why do you try acting like you know everything? Again, telling me where the players I listed about who I would want the Eagles to target like I was asking for your opinion. I remember you doing a mock last year, and trying to correct me on where certain players will be drafted. How did that work out? I hope that it was 100% correct by the way you act like you are right again this year.

paulman
paulman
January 22, 2011 10:28 pm

To Sports Bum,
I think you take me way too serious.. on “credibility has taken a shot”. .. relax man…I have no credibility and like to poke fun sometimes (even when its at myself)
I only corrected you on your article about what Coach Trgovac said as if he would say anything else..
Coaches travel in small circles…because the truth is that Coach Fox had asked for the Defensive Staffs Resignation including Trg, they refused to do so , so they were all fired.. I believe Coach Fox was forced into this decision to save his own job and that they were indeed good friends with each other, but the fact remains that Trgovac would not work for him again…I say this with certainty for this was a big story down here in NC 2 years ago when it happened and that’s all they talked about for 2 month’s so I recall very well how the Coaches,Players and the local media reported on it and the ugly aftermath
As far as the Mock Drafts, they are fun to do and critique and who knows what’s going to happen
3 months from now… All I know is that you listed 5 players in your post that you stated the EAgles to pursue.. Now the Eagles have the #22 or #23 Overall pick and 3 of the players you listed will most likely will be gone by then by most NFL Draft Observors including myself
1 player CB Brandon Harris will be on the board and availalbe and 1 player in CB Ras-Dowling will b availalbe and most likely be a mid 2nd Round pick… I base this from what I read about players rankings, teams scouting tendancies, teams needs, players characters, metrics, etc, etc
But it’s still early in the process and ther are some All-Star games coming up, the Indy Combines where players get to show off their athleticism and of course team interviews which means some players will drop dow if they have red flags, adn some players will move up by great workouts,all-star performances and good interviews..I will make a better effort of not being so critical of any posts made here from you or any other poster from here on out..

SportsBum

I’m not gonna continue with you further, because no matter what I say, and what I do to prove my point, you will continue to try to spin it. As evidence of your reply.

I do want to add 1 thing though. You saying that you “know” that Trgovac won’t work with Fox again is your opinion. It can’t be considered a fact, unless you talked to Trgovac himself. You seem to misunderstand that concept.

As for the rest of your reply, being all jumbled and all……. I could come back with a reply for all of that too, but I will let you get away with them things.

I would have drafted his brother last year instead of a undersized defensive end because those undersized defensive ends fail more than any other position drafted out of college ranks. The reason for that is those offensive lineman guys like that beat like a drum in college don’t make it to the next level, what does make it are the bigger more mobile OT’s that a that a guy like our 1 pick last year can’t beat on Sundays. But mistakes like this happen when you hire a guy who should be doing your taxes as your top player personnel guy.If I had a business that I wanted to make the most money I could Banner and Roseman would be the guys I would choose but if I wanted to win a Super Bowl these 2 are no where on the radar screen. As I get ready for my 27th year as a season ticket holder I see little chance of going to a parade for this team, just look at all the needs we had after last year and we sign 1 free agent coming off knee surgery.I guess since we did not trade out of the first round again to save first rd signing bonus money I considered that a victory for the fans….they have me brainwashed with low expectations as you can tell
