He’s Not As Powerful As He Was, But Reid Is Still The Main Decision-Maker

Andy Reid tried to protect defensive coordinator Sean McDermott even after he had been forced to fire him.  I learned from an NFL source that Reid wanted to give McDermott a chance to get a job on another NFL team before making it public that he was no longer with the organization.

That way it would not have looked like a firing.  To the public and other football people it would have looked like McDermott had decided on his own to move elsewhere.  There were members of the front office who didn’t agree with doing it that way.

After McDermott was set free, Reid took off on a vacation which seemed to come up out of no where, despite the fact that the team was without a defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

For a while there it was starting to look like a major change had taken place in the Eagles decision-making process with Reid on vacation and the team’s front office hiring coaches, but we have to slow up on that diagnosis.  Some chances have been made but Reid is still the main guy making most of the football decisions for the Eagles.

He no longer has veto power over everything and everybody else in the front office.  We could see that with the forementioned decision to fire McDermott and the way that firing was executed.

Reid will be back this weekend to sit down with Saints young secondary coach Dennis Allen.  I doubt that it’s to make Allen the team’s defensive coordinator.

This surely looks like somebody is doing a favor for somebody else with this interview.  Why would you interview a young defensive backfield coach after firing a young defensive backfield coach who had been your defensive coordinator?  Again, it would shock me if Allen gets the job.

Reid didn’t miss anything while he was away because he was on board with the pursuit and hiring of Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn.  Notice that Reid made a public statement on the hiring.

There’s been no panic about the Birds being without a defensive coordinator because they have a veteran defensive coordinator on staff for all intents and purposes.   Sixty year old Dick Jauron won’t sign any where else before giving the Eagles a chance to match an offer, so they have a defensive coordinator under contract.

They can sign Jauron, if they want him but obviously they’re not crazy about him.    They’re biding their time right now in order to wait and interview a candidate whose team is still in the playoffs.

I’m fairly sure that the person they’re waiting on is Mike Trgovac, Packers defensive line coach.  It’s going to be his job if he wants it and interviews well with Reid and the rest of the front office.  Trgovac’s Packer connection means Reid has probably already had some type of communication with him.

I heard that Jauron took the job in Cleveland too. Good. I don’t want him. If he couldn’t coach up our secondary and they were one of the worst in NFL history, then I certainly don’t want him coaching our entire defense. Good riddance.

Wonder if they are looking to hire the Saints guy to do that same job with the Eagles……?…..Doubt Payton would allow that though, just a thought.

dawkplex looks like our next D coordinator will be someone who is a position coach. I will remain concerned as long as we still have the same level of talent.

I agree with G. I think Trgovac is the guy.

Reid needs to use whatever power he has left to get Haloti Ngata. From everything i read this guy will be available. Everyone is talking about Haynesworth but yet Ngata is better, younger, and actually likes to play football. This is the type of guy that will automatically change this defense for the better and will prolly be cheaper to get than Nnamdi A. Ngata might be the best D-Lineman in the game right now..he is a nasty minded type of player who we are missing on D. This guy is a sure thing to be a beast

pheags88….doesn’t Ngata play in a 3-4 system? He IS a BEAST….and I am still pissed that the birds passed on him in the draft….but having played in that system, I doubt he would want to play in a 4-3.

Plus….I seriously doubt that they will let him leave in Baltimore. They are not a stupid organization.

greenfan, Birds didn’t pass on Ngata. Ravens grabbed him before our selection.

Can someone please tell me why they think Ngata will be available? He was an All-Pro this year, not a pro bowler, ALL PRO. Why on earth would the Ravens let him go?

Green i get what you mean but I really think Ngata is that good to where he could play any position on the D Line and i think he would be dominate in the 4-3 with Trent Cole. I would disagree with you that he would might not desire to switch from systems cuz from everything I know about this guy is that he loves to just play football and he is nasty..i dont think he has that selfish mentality that Haynesworth had bout the system.

And yes Baltimore will obvioulsy try to ressign him but this year is totally diff cuz of the CBA up in the air to where no team is going to want to sign players for big contracts because of all the uncertainty there is..And I truly feel that if the Eagles really want a guy they can have them. They have the money, they have the prime time games which players want, and they have the more up and coming team over the ravens..how much longer can ray lewis and ed reed play? And the eagles have the better shot to get to the playoffs/superbowl than the ravens do without having to get through Steelers, Pats, Colts, and now Jets every year

@ btc….you are correct about the drafting order, but I had wanted them to move up to get him. It wouldn’t have taken a big jump, and he would have been worth it.

Yeah Ngata got picked 2 spots before we picked Bunkley. It would have been good to move up but you need someone to trade with and at that time I don’t think we were complaining about the Bunkley pick. You all know, I use every opportunity to point out Reid’s poor defensive drafting but going back over drafts and saying who we should have taken look great with 20/20 hindsight vision.

Anyhow, Reid needs to take a chance this year and go after the defensive studs. Stop trying ti build for the future. He may not have a future. No time for another 5 year plan. Bring in some guys to help this defense now.

btc…im just trying to express the little hope I have for getting the guy on our team. The Ravens might not be able to ressign this guy and give him what he wants..I dont kno what their salary situation but im pretty sure they dont make as much money as the eagles do. And this offseason is just going to be different due to everything thats going on with the league

Spot On G..
I posted Sunday that LB Coach Trgovac (Packers) would be a leading Candidate for the Eagles DC,
for many reasons that have since been talked and reported on. He has great expereince, is tough, fair and a very hard worker who has experience in the 4-3 and the 3-4 schemes and has been succesful at every stop during his coaching career. He is in his prime as a coach, in age and has the right demeanor
and personality to be able to handle the job and coacing in Philadelphia which is not for everyone…
I do think Jauron/Browns are withholding/delaying the announcement of naming Dick Jauron
as their next DC as a common courtesy between Holmgrem/Heckert & Reid who have close conncections together.. I think the Eagles feel that if Jauron annouces that he’s taken the Browns job,
then the DC Position is completely vacant and that it somehow gives more leverage to any potential candidates who pursues the position.. Either way I still think Trgovac is the man and I think he would make a great hire..

Reid just named NFL Coach of the Year by Maxwell Club. Reid isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Vick named NFL player of the year

Yes yes…. i also believe him to be the guy. I like whats happening… we are changing much the same way we did when Andy finally went out and got WR’s. I honestly believe that coaching is Half of what needs to change on the D side this year.

1> Get a coaching staff on D that has attitude. 1 down 2 to go.
2> Add 1 or 2 starters in the 2ndary. CB and upgrade from q if we can.
3> Move bradley over and bring in 1 monster at MLB.
4>Bring in a fat boy at DT if one is there for the grabbing. (this would be optional really)

Id trade Kolb and Mike Patt to add starters or depth. We need 3 or 4 new starters on the overall team next year. 3 of them would need to be serious beef to make me happy. id also bring guys like q back while trying to replace him. We have long suffered from a lack of depth on this team.

@rev…like the way you are thinking about where we need the focus, but without a CBA in place, there can be no trades…..i think this is going to be a very different off season….if an agreement comes late in the game, i think it will be a scramble to put together much of this defensive overhaul….the teams that need fewer changes this year will do much better next season.

Great information. If the front office went out of their way to let the world know they showed McDermott the door, then they know the Eagle fanbase is sick of excuses.

They feed us McDermott as an appetizer for the main course. “The 400”

“The 400” will be the only one left to blame after next season.

Next season will be fantastic. Every win will bring us closer to the playoffs and every loss will be nudging “the 400” and his sissy brand of football closer out the door.

I am glad the Eagles are waiting to hire more coaches. They are’nt done firing either. There is no way the linebacker coach is staying. He’s getting fired. That’s one of the perks of whoever they hire as the defensive coordinator. He’ll get to watch David Akers kick (LB coach shuey’s) behind out the front door.

They also hired Donald Trump to let Ernie Sims know his services will no longer be needed. Only the best, for the greatest scrub linebacker the Eagles have started since…well ever!

green i agree..its going to be interesting to see how the eagles play in the draft this year..the only thing your really going to be able to trade before the draft is future picks from next year but i really dont think that is the eagles style. Since its going to be difficult to makes trades maybe they will actually pick players in the 1st and 2nd rounds instead of trading down to load up on picks for players that can “maybe” be this or that in the later rounds

common sense, Eagles want to win a Super Bowl. do what SB champions do. that is have 2 players with 10 or more sacks. 1 or both are usually LBs. here is proof.
starting in 1986 Giants Sb Champion sack leader-lawrence taylor (LB)21 sacks 1988 49ERS SACK leader (LB )cHARLES Haley 12 sacks 1989 (Lb)Haley 11sks 1990 Giants TAYLOR (LB) 11 SACKS 1992,93,95 Cowboys Haley 3rd in sacks in 92,93 and had more sacks in SB than Bruce Smith 95 sack leader Haley 11 sacks NEXT yr Packers lbs not big factor for sacks they had Reggie white then Broncos two years Romanowski sack leader Mobley notable LB Rams, ravens, bucs won next three. De ruled(sacks anyway) Carter 17 sacks, ravens of course lewis and boulware tampa bay had rice 17 sks then came patriots 2001,03,04 Vrabel, mcginest, brusci, johnson took turns leading sacks for LBs 10+ sacks Giants 3 players umenyiora (de)13 tuck (dt)10 strahan (de)9

of course Steelers won 2 of last 5 Sb are close again Harrison lb 16 sacks woodley(lb) 12 in 2008 and in 2005 leading sack leaders 2 (LBs) Porter 11 and Haggans 9 last year Saints sack leader DE will smith 13 Seems like Lb lol were very important to past Super Bowl champions not just in stopping the run but SACKS the few teams that DE ruled they had 16 17 sacks not 10 If Andy Reid is not going to be fired for not running ball when westbrook and Mccoy ave 5.2 a carry, changing game plan when not working, clock management shouldn’t he be fired for not having a beast of a DE, 2 AWSOME lb’s, a pro bowl SS this year Eagles sack leader is Cole with 10 but 2nd player is no where near 10 Parker with 5 DC Johnson must have been a miracle worker cause EAagle Super Bowl yr sack leader was kearse with 6

great dhani helped out big that yr with half a sack and ike reese with 1 sack man i thought douglas was a bigger factor but he had 3 for the year just think if johnson had a romanowski, mathews, vrabel, mcginest

I’m hoping that moving to a guy who coaches one-gap will bring out what we all hoped we’d be getting out of Bunk. I don’t get to read the comments on these posts too often so i apologize if someone already brought this up, but how common is it to hire a positions coach w/o a coordinator. You would think that the DC would want some input in his own staff.
