Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman sat down with Dave Spadaro of PhiladelphiaEagles.com and gave us his evaluation of his rookie class of 2010. The first guy he evaluated was number one draft pick defensive end Brandon Graham.
Remember that Graham won the starting left defensive end position opposite Pro Bowler Trent Cole during training camp. The Birds had moved up 11 spots in the first round to get him. They had to be expecting and counting on him to be an impact player in his first year, but clearly he wasn’t.
Graham played 13 games and finished the season with 13 tackles and 3 sacks. Those numbers are nothing to brag about even though I thought he was an effective pass rusher most of the time he was on the field, especially early in the season. He’s got to be smarter about knowing when running backs are going to chip him. His intensity, quickness and athleticism are his weapons, but he must find a way to use them to his advantage all the time and not just some of the time.
Roseman began his comments talking about the ankle sprain which Graham suffered early in the season. He believes the injury was the main reason that Graham’s season wasn’t nearly as productive as expected before he suffered the season-ending knee injury. I’ll accept the ankle injury as part of the problem, but I can’t accept it as all of the problem.
The General Manager said Graham was dominant in training camp. Dominant wouldn’t be word I would use. I would say he looked good in training camp. I saw him beating blockers but I didn’t see him display dominant power and speed moves to point where he looked like he could easily take over a game. He was very good at times, but he’s got a way to go to be dominant.
Sometimes he allowed his size and arm length disadvantage get the best of him. He must develop to the point where he counters everything that an offensive unit throws up against him. When he gets to that point he’ll be dominant.
I thought he looked very promising in training camp, but that was mostly in one-on-one drills where you don’t have to be concerned about anything other than beating your man. In an NFL game, you have to be aware of other players on the field, along with tendencies, formations and personnel.
“I think I would insincere to tell you that I know where Brandon Graham is going to be in in August, right now as we sit here today”, Roseman told Spadaro. “I know what kind of work ethic Brandon Graham has. I know what kind of competitor Brandon is I know what kind of training staff and doctors we have. Whatever is the best situation for a player to be in Brandon Graham will be in that situation”
He continued by talking about how the ankle sprain Inhibited Graham because he’s such an athletic defensive end and I would agree, but it’s not a positive. They say it happened early in the year and Graham wasn’t the same player after that. If a player is healthy enough to play, then it’s his responsibility to be productive or take himself out of the game.
According to Roseman, Graham was a special player when he was a 100%.
He pointed out that the Eagles new defensive line coach, Jim Washburn thought Graham was the best defensive end in the draft a year ago. To that I say so what. Washburn may have thought highly of Graham, but we don’t need to talk about what people think about him any more, we have footage of him playing in the NFL and he hasn’t lived up to the billing as of yet.
The young Eagles front office executive said Graham has the tools to be a great defensive end, but according to Roseman, he was hampered by the all of the things that rookies have to do to prepare for the draft. I would agree with those comments and his statement about players making their biggest jump from year one to year two, but Graham won’t be ready to play at the start of year two. He’s not going to get the repetitions he would have gotten if he was healthy. That’s a reason for concern in the short run going forward.
I saw him having trouble with his arm-length disadvantage to the big offensive linemen in the league. Too many times he was pushed around and unable to be an effective pass rusher or run stopper. I do agree that it seemed that he was hampered by the ankle injury. He’s still got much to prove.
I’m more convinced about his ability to put pressure on the quarterback, but I’m not nearly as impressed with his ability to defend the run. He needs to get stronger and smarter.
Graham must prove he can play full-time, but he’s ready to be a factor right now as a pass rusher. He must first get healthy and that can’t be taken for granted with the serious knee injury he had.
I love his positive personality. He’s got an infectious enthusiasm that will help keep him and his teammates going during tough and challenging times.
I cant wait to see how this Dline looks after having a real d line coach.
Only Dline move id really be interested to see is maybe adding Haynesworth. And even that im not so sure about. Otherwise….. lets see how they look. Id like to add…
Big name CB
draft a CB 1st RD
Rg and or RT
Draft a C
If you close your eyes and listen….this Roseman guy sounds like Banner with a few Reid qoutes sprinkled in.
He even use the “High Motor” phrase.
This guy is an obvious “BROWN NOSE”.
Believe me guys…Rosie took the short route to the top.
What rookie Defensive end did live up to there first rd grade? Morgan? JPP?
#16 PickMorgan 4 games – 5 tackles Injured Reserve
#15 Pick JPP – 30 Tackles, 4.5 sacks 2 FF 16 games
#13 Pick Graham – 13 Tackles 3.5 sacks 2 FF 13 games
With Washburn in place I see Graham having a better season…… Maybe perhaps 7-8 sacks this year……. I like Daryl Tapp…… I think he could be a guy who can learn alot from Washburn…… Tapp is always around the ball and has great awareness…….
@Stevo…… Two of the best DT’s that maybe available (Trade) Haynesworth, and Shaun Rogers!!!!! If you ask me these guys need to stay out of trouble….. I think Haynesworth will settle out of court with his current issues and get back to football……
I think the Eagles are a bit afraid of drafting a corner in the 1st round……. With Kyle Wilson drafted by the jets in the 1st round didnt live up to the hype in his rookie season……. I think the Birds will make a trade to move up in the 1st to get a RT or a guard in the early rounds and draft a corner in the late rounds…… MY Guess!!!
Damarrio Williams didnt play well his 1st season…….. People bashed the Texans owner for not drafting Reggie Bush and now Reggie Bush maybe packing out of N.O. with 11million dollars he is owed this season which he shouldnt even receive…… He’s not worth that much…….
Jroc- remember…. they very well may have 2 first rd picks this draft. I by no means would do it but for some… kolb would be better then a qb pick at the top. He’s cheaper and ready to start. If it happens i hope they……
Grab a FA CB.
Draft a RT rd 1
Draft a CB rd1
the next 2 rounds id go lb and c.
My hope is that with juan as DC they start to actually care about the LB spot.
I feel u Stevo……. That makes since……. Do you think if Jamal Jackson can recover from his bicep tear the eagles may move Mcglynn at RG???? IDK about Justice it may take time for him to recover from micro surgery……. Or could the birds try Jamal Jackson at RT…….. He’s got the height and size to play there…… JUST A THOUGHT!!!
Maybe the birds draft Pouncey and put him at center, Mcglynn at RT…. and Jamal Jackson at RT….. If Justice doesn’t play this season……. We all know how the Eagles do when it comes to moving guys around at different postions…… We didnt expect that Shawn Andrews was going to play at RT when he started his whole “MY BACK HURTS NON-SENSE”!
Mcglynn at RG…… MY BAD…
I think Caldwell will do an excellent job with these Lb’s…….. I think he will bring the fire and the spark that we need to have a very fearful LB’s squad like the Steelers have at Pittsburgh…… I think that the Eagles need to have Trotter on the sideline as a motivational/teacher to help out a coach like Juan Castillio to get the younger players some good advise……
We have a proven LT and a very very solid LG. we have q’s the rest of the way. Id like to see them bring in a Pro level RT and we can go from there. Those other guys can add depth but i dont want to test jackson out at Rt and such.
as far as the d goes- the birds always use the line “we’re gunna continue to go at the qb”. that has not changed. they want to put pressure using the front 4. The fact remains however that this line is just like the lines theyve had in the past. The difference is really at the CB spot. think about it….
Vincent-Taylor i think taylor was not as good as everyone thinkins BUT he had dawk to bail him out.
Lito-Brown this was solid. Lito got the press but Sheldon did his job as a shut down corner.
Asam-Brown how nice it was to have lito ready to jump it at any moment. Plus dawk and q backing em all up.
Asam-Patterson nuff said. Cobine that with the fact that Allen was a rook and our DC sucked ars…. its easy to see what needs to change.
We’ve always had 1 good DE and q’s on the other side. That has not changed…. what has…. is the RCB.
I think a guy like Flozell Adams will be good……. I know guys are going to kill me for that statement but he had a great season with the steelers……. He had limited his false start penalties i think 3 all season long…… He didnt give up a lot of sacks and perhaps you dont have to give him a long term deal….. maybe 2yrs. tops……. Get a young tackle to learn from a veteran like him because we know Mudd is going to make this offensive line better….. We need a guy with an attitude like Adams……. Tra Thomas use to be fired up when it was game time…….. I think Adams will help now but we all know that age is a big thing in Philly Green!!!!
At LB…. we need a guy who is smart and has a nose for the ball. We have always relied on the system when it comes to the LB spot. Think about it…. trotter was amazing in philly then sucked in washington, then played welll in philly again…. why?? cause the system in philly is such that you just play your lanes. In washington they gave him alot of freedom and it hurt him.
Id like to see philly just once make the LB a huge part of what they are doing. Stew is a system guy and we need that but we need a guy who is aggresive but playes with smarts. we need 1 game changer at LB.
Your right stevo……. RC position has been a real big ?????…… I think the birdz will get a proven guy (finger’s crossed) like Asmouga or perhaps for cheaper Carlos Rogers who cant int. a ball to save his life…….. But he is a solid corner……. I think Lindley can get the 3rd corner position over Hanson and make Hanson the 4th corner…… Slot receivers are getting bigger and Dallas likes to use Dez Bryant in the slot……And the saints with Colston…… etc……
Jroc- not a bad idea as far as im concerned. They have upgraded coaching and now they need to upgrade the roster. Bring in some bodies and let them compete in camp for the job. Draft a rook and bring in a FA RT. let them push eachother.
Jroc- so we give Lindley the 3rd spot and asam goes down in camp and now Lindley is our #2??. I dont agree with you on that….. you need 3 starting CB’s in this league. Especially if your the birds and you plan to be up by 21 with that amazing O.
If im the birds i bring in Asmo AND draft a CB in the first RD. then Lindley is your #4 CB (still will be on the field a TON).
@Stevo do you think the birds will move Bradley to the strong side and chaney in the middle and Fouko to the weakside…….. Have Clayton to back up Fouko pick up 3 LBS in the draft because the birds will release Gaither, and not resign Sims????
@Stevo….. I feel you bro you need 3 starting corners in the NFL…… But my thing is that how T. Williams and Shields from GB they played great this season……. It all came down to trust with the coaching staff to let these guys play against wr’s one on one and let Woodson blitz……. I think the eagles have some faith in Lindley to be a good backup #2 in case of injury!!!
im not sure…. i know everyone loves Chaney and hates sims but i just dont know. The problem for me is that i dont think the birds have really been smart about the LB spots and so i dont know what we really have. I feel like we have guys like Jordan and foku at LB, and Mcglynns and such on the Oline that can move around and do different things but are not starters. I like that we can do that but we need to upgrade the starting spots.
I want to see more Clayton if you ask me……. I’ve seen footage of him and he is a pure athlete……… Very fast and someone who the steelers will love to have for the organization…….. He could be someone the Eagles could use on key downs and perhaps a game changer if he gets enough reps this season!!!
I agree Stevo…….
There was no doubt that Graham looked good at times when he was heatlhy,
There is also no doubt that his endurance and Cardio-Vascualr Shape needs to improve a 100% if he wants to stay on the field.. I was surprised on how such a young man/player in the the prime of his life could get so winded after just a few plays… I am not sure if he has a problem somewhere, but his Stamina must improve fior he has all the physical tools.. ..
Or maybe it was his ankle.
Yeah he was dominant in training camp against who? King Dunlap and Justice. Whoopty freakin doo.
After one season he has done nothing to indicate that he is Jerome McDougle or more than Juqua Parker. Sad thing is we probably won’t know until 2012 because when he doesn’t play well this year, it will just be chalked up to coming off the injury (which is definitely true). But honestly, we probably won’t know what this kid really is for 2 seasons. By then Cole will be downhill (it’s not like he’s Mr. Impact late in the season anyway).
the sad thing is we had clemons and babin here , and we trade up to get grahm , the 2 ex guys end up in the pro bowl and are new high motor guy ends up on IR ,this team can not evaluate the line position , they got lucky with cole and maybe have one in laws. hiring segrest was a coachingblunder . as you always say andy ” i got to do a better job” just let washburn handle the line
I still say that Washburn will do wonders for this line. I expect good things from Graham, Cole and even Tapp. You also have to understand that if we can cover the wr’s… we will have time to get to the qb.
@nev856 …Dude both Clemmons and Babin are 1 yr wonders….It’s not like they were beasts for the 3 or 4 other teams they played for before the came to Philly…..Half of us on here talked shyt about them when we first signed them
thats funny ,cause with reid on his last leg of his contract hes despratly needs a couple of one year wonders.
I’d rather have a 1 year wonder than a bunch of scrubs. Maybe they aren’t 1 year wonders and turned the corner. No? Clemons was decent in Oakland anyway and then fell off once here with injuries. And Babin barely saw the field. So who knows if they are really 1 year wonders or just not good here. Just because a player doesn’t have success here doesn’t mean they are good.
I am sure that R Segfrest & McDermotts Schemes and Coaching abilitiies had something to do with the lackluster play from Clemons & Babin too..
The General Manager said “Graham was dominant in training camp”. THIS IS THE DILUSION THAT THE EAGLES POSSESS. WITH THEIR OFFENSIVE LINE ANY ONE CAN LOOK GOOD IN PRACTICE. Roseman has the same spin that Banner possesses when he talks Eagles. Just say nothing if you have nothing to say. Don’t make it up.
