NFL Mediator Says Progress Was Made, But Strong Differences Remain

I think the NFL owners are playing the players’ union and the media like a fiddle. I feel these talks are nothing but a mirage. A number of owners made it clear during the season that they were willing to scrap the season in order to get the agreement changed. These fake talks will give the owners cover, so they can say, they tried to get a deal done, but weren’t able to do so.

According to George Cohen, who is the federal mediator who is overseeing the negotiations, the NFL owners and the NFLPA have made what he calls, “some progress”. The only problem is what exactly does that mean?

He says progress was made but follows that up by saying, “but very strong differences remain”. When you say “progress was made”, but “very strong differences remain”, you might as well not say anything.

I understand his situation. Cohen’s reputation is on the line, so you know he’s going to say something that will be as positive as possible. I would be pleased if they get a deal done, but I expect them not to get it done.

Cohen says the talks will begin again on Tuesday of next week. They’ll have three days to make enough progress to postpone the work stoppage.
