Howie Roseman Tries To Explain Daniel Te’o Nesheim

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman did his best to explain 3rd round pick Daniel Te’o Nesheim to Dave Spadaro of PhiladelphiaEagles.com and it wasn’t an easy job. Third round draft picks are quite valuable to NFL football teams, so it’s not easy to explain drafting a guy who looks over matched against the competition.

I remember the GM comparing Nesheim to the Steelers Troy Polamalu because he was so quiet off the field. I thought that was a major stretch because being quiet says nothing about how you can play football. Some little girls are quiet but that doesn’t mean they can play football.

Roseman talked about Nesheim having arthroscopic procedures on both of his ankles. He said he had a shoulder issue as well. The GM said the young man went through some growing pains, but they still have high expectations of Nesheim.

In my opinion, this young man didn’t look like he belonged on the field in training camp. At times during the one-on-one drills, I felt like walking on the field and stopping the drill to protect the young man. He was getting his butt kicked every time they snapped the ball.

I look at Nesheim and see him as a high school football player, who got lost on his way to practice and made the mistake of walking onto the Eagles practice field. He didn’t look like he belonged out there. I saw him getting up off the ground most of the time after being knocked down. He’s got a lot to prove.

Seriously, he was no match for the NFL offensive lineman which he faced. They threw him around like he was a dish towel. It was a total mismatch. He’s got to get much stronger and bigger, especially if they continue to ask him to move inside and rush the passer from inside. He didn’t look fast enough to make any noise from outside at defensive end.

This young man must live in the weight room during the off season to have any chance of being an NFL football player.

I’m starting to think these idiots draft guys they can take to see there momma. They must be a bunch of butt loving circle jerks looking for some young tight locker room booty.

Here’s a piece of advice for the FO, if they look like they belong in a maroon crown vic with tinted windows and gold rims… DRAFT THEM! Chris Johnson case in point.

these guys are too caught up in finding diamonds in the rough. this guy probably would have been there in the 5th round.

The FO has done a terrible job in the draft and free agency on the defensive line. Trent Cole is the best lineman they’ve drafted, and he is a good player. Other than Cole, the best defensive lineman of the Reid era is Hugh Douglas, a holdover from the Ray Rhodes years. My suggestion would be for them to use the George Costanza method and go against their every instinct of drafting small fast guys and draft a big huge beast to play defensive line.

Going over my notes from last years Combine and Draft
Teo was seen as a 5th Rd Pick and in the #20 to #25 Best DE rankings coming out of College. Then he went to the Combines and was off the Charts in almost every metric/drills, he really shot up the charts and within a weeks time, shot up the rankings… I watched a lot of film on him while he was at University of Washington and he reminded me just likt Chris Gocong did when he was in college..Fast,quick burst and getting into the backfield making plays.. but once they play against NFL sized players , these guys just can’t get disengage from blockers, they are simply not strong or big enough at the point of attack.. He was a mistake selecting in the 3rd Rd
where the Eagles passed on better DE with bettter upsides like a COrey Wooten, Austen Lane, Greg Hardy…
If anyone recalls, I had the Eagles Selecting OG Mike Johnson from Alabama, who now plays for the Falcons and will probably be a 8 year Starter at the Guard Position

They said the same about Matt McCoy!!!!!!!!!!
Matt McCoy+ Gocong+Te’o Neshiem= a recipe for disaster………. Pretty soon we will be hearing Te’p Neshiem playing a LB this season and we wont draft a stud LB this season…….. Gocong was DE turned LB…….. Horrible in coverage……

This pick was another example of the Eagles only using their in house opinions without cross checking against some of the national reports they have access too. Millions of dollars is now spent by non-NFL teams to produce in depth scouting reports. They are typically done by ex-NFL people so they are vaild opinions.
I absolutely do not expect the Eagles to pick ESPN’s best available player, but they often use a pick on guy in a high round that makes no sense to anyone involved in the draft. There is always going to be some scratch your head picks, but they are to good to waste forth round and higher picks on guys everyone knew in a late round picks at best.

Go look over the previous third and forth rounds of the drafts to see all the misses. It still amazes me that teams don’t use these picks to trade for a player that can play on Sundays. The dream of striking gold on long shots has doomed many men and the Eagles on occasion,

Get Phil Savage in the draft room again this year!! Look at all his late round SEC picks that worked. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves from the media. He was hired because he was announcing SEC games since being out of the NFL. Hell, let’s use all picks from round 4-7 on SEC kids. It may sound crazy, but you would be surprised how many of them beat out the higher draft picks.

Jroc757, Dont forget they also said the same thing about Mke Mamula ! I love how Schiller n Navyeagleguy try to justify these kinds of picks by saying, well look who else they drafted, Forget that ! You take your chances with the lower level picks, You dont go take somebody thats considered a 5th round pick by EVERYBODY else and use your 3rd on him, If your building your team through the draft you cant take hits like this, it sets your team back YEARS!These are the reasons why we cant get to the next level.

JP – you think ANY NFL team listens to scouts other than theirs (or other teams’ scouts at the combine conversations…etc)? Hell no. They have professional guys that do the same work that the ‘outsiders’ do that you mentioned. They do it just as in depth, and with just as qualified people – scouts that were players etc…

AND for this whole Teo thing – I’m not defending the pick, the guy clearly hasn’t panned out yet. But it was widely reported that the Patriots wanted him and were targeting him in the 3rd round. Very widely reported. To say that he was a concensus 5th round guy is to ignore many other reports. Dont just jump on the pualman bandwagon.

JP – but you really think that any team is going to listen to the media over their own professionals? And then you went on to praise Savage…

andrew – Ok, I hear you, you have to draft sure bets with high picks. That’s reasonable. Unless you want to get players on your teams. There’s no such thing a sure bet in the draft. There just isn’t. If you want to hold coaches/FO accountable for missing on high draft picks, go ahead, but then we’d have a league with 32 teams, 0 front offices and 0 head coaches.

I think that we will have some better results with Washburn having much more input regarding any picks for the line….I want to see this team give him players that he likes to work with.

are you cats listening to what Mr. Cobb says, he doesn’t even belong on the football field, that is as strong of an indictment of the eagles draft that I can think of, yet you will here these clownish remarks that Kolb isnt’t worth a number one

G-Man stated some concerning things about Ernie SIms last Spring & Summer Camp too, which proved to be true ..(lost in space, doesn’t recognize plays quick enough, out of position, etc, etc,)
Back to Phil Savage (who I thought signed a 2 year Deal last year to help in Scouting for the Draft) I noticed he doesn’t show as an employee any longer
under the Eagles Employee listings on their Web-Site so I am not sure if he’s still invovled with the Eagles or not, but he does have a good eye for talent.. I still think the Eagles should hire Paulman to help out with the Draft/Roster Management to help this team Win a Super Bowl

Paulman, you can’t win a superbowl when your players are constantly being traded to other teams. There would be 0 continuity from game to game.

jake, the difference is I don’t think anyone can dispute Andy drafts offensively when he makes that a priority. Kolb has nothing to do with failed defensive draft picks. Looking over the Reid era, his best and only good defensive draft was 2002. But when he has done a pretty decent job offensively. In the earlier years, it was his neglect and stubborness to not place high priority on WRs that was the problem. But we clearly see that when he makes that position a priority he can draft it well. Now defense is another story. Here he just can’t seem to get it right.

G, there are a lot of defensive picks the Eagles make where the guy shouldn’t even be in the league. We’re always trying to outsmart everyone and get a player who we think can play more than one position or convert him to a position he’s never played in his life. And we know all teams do it, but we don’t care about the other teams. We care about what we do and we constantly fail at that. We won’t draft a LB high but we will spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a DE and try to convert him to a LB. What?

To Schiller,
I would promise publicy to stop all “Trade Alerts” if Hired by the Eagles
Give me 2 years on Drafting,Signing Free-agents and I would have this team in legitimate Super Bowl Contention for the next 6-8 Seasons

Schiller,
I agree the final decision on picks is obviously based on in house evaluations. I know there are countles cross checkers in scouting baseball talent to get as many opinions as possible. Football definately has cross checkers, but not near the number that baseball has for additional input. The number of qualified opinions may have to be expanded. I understand the in house opinions carry much more weight. Guys that have several questions marks like being undersized, a step slow, second rate competion, injuries, etc should be picked late. Nobody can critisize a team for missing on questionable guys after the fourth round. Let’s see if the Patriot scoop up Teo after he’s cut, doubt it.

I can confidently say Phil Saveage didn’t want Teo (Pac 10) in the third round. He probably had 5 guys with a third round grade from the SEC. I can compliment 1 person in the scouting department while questioning some percieved procedures of the whole scouting department. Just 1 outsiders opinions.

Teo is much worse than Gocong at this point. Teo needs to add 15 lbs to have a chance to be a back-up I think he has less than a 10% chance of making the team next year.

jp – fair enough. That will be a fun little side project to watch what happens with Teo if/when he leaves the Eagles. I’m not sold on calling him a definite bust yet though. I don’t do that after 1 year. But yeah, there’s definitely a precedent of NE picking up Eagles ‘throw aways’ – Jabar Gaffney, Kyle Eckle, of course Greg Lewis…I feel like 1 more WR…?

I think these coaching changes on the lines, and in particular Washburn, will help get things right (I hope!!). There was no earthly reason Segrest should have been on the coaching staff at any position as long as he was. This organization needs to stop trying questionable “experiments” and using sound judgment in evaluation of prospective talent. I agree that the biggest slip-ups have been on evaluating defensive prospects and bringing in guys with history of injuries “hoping” they can stay healthy for a year.

Schiller,
Sounds good, I understand your not proclaiming Teo a great player, just a guy that a few teams may have thought was worth a middle pick. New England had a few tough years with their higher rounds before last years crop of good players. They don’t hesitate to cut a second or third rounder after 1 year.
