Michael Vick Expected To Sign Franchise Tender On Wednesday

According to Jeff McLane of Philly.com, Eagles starting quarterback Michael Vick is expected to sign his franchise tender on Wednesday. The Collective Bargaining Agreement will expire on Friday if a new agreement isn’t worked out in its place. Nobody knows what rules the league will be operating by after the potential work stoppage, so the players’ union has advised players like Vick to sign their tenders.

Vick’s salary will be in the $16 million dollar range. A franchise player’s salary is the average of the salary of the top five NFL players at his position.

Top level players throughout the league who had the franchise tag placed on them by their teams are signing the deals as protection for them going forward. The NFL players association has argued that the franchise tags won’t be legitimate if and when the current CBA expires, but there’s no guarantee that ultimately the franchise tags will be voided after the CBA expires.

Clearly the union wants to use the franchise tag as another negotiating chip because teams like the Eagles would face serious pressure if they had to face the possibility of losing Vick to free agency. It would also give Vick tremendous leverage in a contract negotiation with the Eagles.

Yo G, So if there is no season, does that mean he just made 16 million for doing nothing?

No Season, No CBA, Vick and every player get “Zero”..
It would be a work-stoppage, lockout, strike whatever you want to call it.
But once the Current CBA expired Thur 3/4 at 2359pm, there will be no paychecks for the players..

Does anyone think the Eagles will eventually sign Vick to a long-term deal..
I don’t, the 2011 Season will determine Vick’s fate in the Philadelphia I believe.

Yes Paulman… a deal will be made. I have explained y over and over and you cast it out like its crap. These are my OPINIONS but i think there is strong history to make my point.

1. The 2 most valued positions by the Andy reid Eagles are a. QB b. CB. They will not “wing it” for the next few years.

2. The eagles are not going to pay Vick 15 million this year and have him get into trouble, not play and still get paid. Therefore… they want him to sign a deal that has TONS of clauses in case that happens. That is not in the franchise deal he is about to sign.

3. They wanted to sign him long term but were not able under the “30% rule” as part of the current cba. I know you dont seem to realize this but THAT DEAL IS STILL IN PLACE for a few more days so…. they couldnt do it.

4. There is no way that they trade kolb and have vick only for 1 year. Also no way they put themselves in a position to have to franchise 1 or the other next year (both would be FA’s again). So…. somebodys getting a long term deal. Kolb would never do that knowing vick is still here,

So…. Vick will sign this 1 year deal and then after a new CBA is in place the birds will lock him up for 3-5 years. On top of that… Kolb will be traded to the highest bidder.

In the end….. i have no idea how they have done this. Frankly…. they look really smart. Im not a FO guy but we need to give them credit. Also look for Kolb to return in 4 years as a backup.

btw…. reason #1 on my last post is why i strongly believe the birds will not rest until they have a solid and long term plan for the Right CB spot. think of the duos weve had here…..

I read that CB Jimmy Smith (the 3rd Rated QB this draft and will most likely be on the board when Eagles select at #23) has some character issues about his
work ethic, coachability, off the field issues so he may well drop into the 2nd Round though he scored well in his drills from COmbine Observors..
It’s not a deep draft for CB/Safety this year, in fact, this Draft pool is not very
deep across the board and at the skill positions. The DL is by far the deepest followed by the OL and then pretty think almost everywhere else and escpecially after the 3rd Round or so which may be another reason for the Eagles to keep Kolb as a back-up for 2011 since it doesn’t appear that they can get a high pick this year with no trading allowed with no CBA in place..

Other promising CB’s like Aaron Williams,Chuckie Brown from Texas didn’t grade all the well either and many Combine think that Aaron Williams may be better suited at Safety at the NFL level…

Right now it looks like after Peterson and Amukarama, the best all around CB is Brandon Harris from Miami who is a little on the small side and only has 4 Int in 32 Career Games while in COllege which is not what you call a
playmaker,, Hes’s built a little like SHeldon Brown was when he came out..
I think the Eagles need a physical CB to compete with the big WR’s in the NFL and especially in the NFC with Nicks,Austin,Bryant,Rice,COlston,Fitzgerals,Crabtree and the Packers WR’s.

no backroom deals..
The Owners want to limit player movement as much as possible until their is a new CBA in place..(regardless if it helps their own team) they are in it together

Paulman- r u kidding me? The pats cheat on everything. there is no way to keep 32 teams from making moves. Banner talked about having 2 guys to work on deals when the new CBA gets rolling. You think they are going to sit tight and wait till then? You are nieve if you think so. Football is a 24hr 7 day a week buisness. The eagles traded their all time leading qb on Easter Sunday. Give me a break man.

To Stevo,
I am not sure what it’s going to take for many of you to realize this is not a
“normal offseason”, if no CBA within the next 24 hours, they will be no player moverment either thru trades or free-agency or anything until a new deal is
made which won’t be until Mid-June sometime at the earliest..
The good news is that there won’t be any Paulman Trade Alerts during this time too… Owners are going to squeeze these players and the players union as much as possible these next 3-4 months.. the GM’s, Front Office and Coaches will fall in line…

simply put….. f you were correct pman then there would not already be people getting new deals. Owners would just sit back. But NO….. they are moving here and there trying to get players on their teams that make them better. They can not just turn that off. It will look like this….. hey 49ers…. want Kolb?
