Marty Mornhinweg coached former 49ers great Steve Young and that’s who he had to be thinking about when the Birds signed Michael Vick to a contract. How many lefthanded quarterback, who is a super-athletes have there been in league history.
There have been two and Mornhinweg has coached both of them. Why wouldn’t his mind go to Young, when the Eagles signed Vick?
People see Young as a Hall of Famer now, but he wasn’t regarded as a Hall of Famer when he stunk up the place in Tampa Bay and was given to the Niners after two hellacious years. He was regarded as a bust and nobody wanted him, but Bill Walsh.
I’m sure Mornhinweg remembers the dejected and defeated quarterback, who showed up in San Francisco, so he knows what process is needed to take Vick to another level.
Morningweg talked about Vick at the Ed Block awards dinner in Baltimore last night and he shared some of his thoughts with the National Football Post. You could tell that he thinks they can do the same thing with Vick that they did with Young.
“We’re all excited,” Mornhinweg said. “He’s had a year under his belt in our system to bank on. I really think he’s so talented that if he does it the right way he could end up being one of the greatest of all time. He’s got another step to take to do that.”
“I’ve been impressed with a lot of things with Mike. That mentality he has right now is whatever it takes to win the next game and it doesn’t matter how it gets done. And the leadership qualities he has, I’ve been very impressed with as well.”
“Greatest of All-Time” sounds like Hall-of-Fame talk to me. Do you think he said that with Young on his mind?
I hope the CBA gets signed so that Mornhinweg and Vick will be able to work together this off season. Vick needs to work on recognizing blitzes, whether they be straight blitzes with man-to-man coverages behind them or zone blitzes with zone coverages behind them.
Vick and the Eagles have to develop a way to take advantage of his athletic skills yet keep him out of harms way. He’s got to get the ball out of his hands much quicker and avoid taking all of those vicious hits.
cool, i cant wait to see him flourish and bring a ring to philly
(multiple would be sweet)
Gotta run the ball to protect him. If they don’t do that, it won’t matter how much Vick improves.
drummerwinslow…EXAAACTLY. but you no that will never happen. Hasnt happened in 12 years and it wont next.
drummer – the fans and most experts ave been banging the “pound the rockmore” drum for several years but nobody on the Eagles coaching staff is listening…
He’s not even in the top 5 right now. He had 4-5 great games and 4-5 average games. I don’t think it’s time for Mr Montana or Manning or Marino, etc to be worried about their place in history.
mugzybrown says “He’s not even in the top 5 right now.” What a joke! Do me a favor and stay off of G Cobb’s site! Look at the top 5 QB’s from last year on the official NFL web site, and you will see that Vick comes in number four.
Let’s brake down the stats if you will…..
Passing yards – 3,018 / Rushing – 678 Total= 3,696
Touchdowns – 21 passing / 9 Rushing =Total 30
QB rating – 100.2 4th in the NFL
NFL Player of the Year!
Came in second in the NFL MVP race!
If your still mad about the Dog’s, cool… but don’t come on here and start making stuff up! Beat it……..
7’s finish big disappointment, play regressed to days in Atlanta, Reid probably to blame but therein lies the predicament: with Vick’s skill set, Reid will never balance the attack with runs, short and intermediate throws, same disappointment to follow I fear, Kolb leaves and fans rue the day he left
Black Cat
Run the numbers for his final 4-5 games in a row. Look at things like fumbles, INTs. Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, Rodgers are all better QBs. That puts him AT LEAST #6.
@Mugzy
OK, I’ll look at Vick’s Int’s and fumbles,
Vick threw for over 3000 yards and rushed for over 600 yards, in 12 games!
The last four games of the regular season in which Vick played the Eagles record was 3-1, one of those games being the miracle comeback, which was led by Vick!
Houston 22/33 for 302 yards and 2 TD’s 1INT, 1fumb 0 lost, 103.3 QB rating (I guess this is a disspointing game)
Dallas 16/26 for 270 Yards 2TD’s 2INT’s 0 fumbles QB rating 90.2 (not superb but got the job done)
NYG 21/35 for 242 yards 3 TD’s 1 INT 0 fumbles QB rating 97.6 130 rush yards
MIN – yes Vick did not play that great in this game –
Manning and Brees should not even be mentioned in the top 5 after this season. They both were not that impressive!
Thank you Real Talk 777! First he said he wasn’t a top five QB, but when I told him to go on the NFL web site to see that Vick was in 4th place he changed his stance to somthing else! What a looser! Manning had a strech of games where he was a pick 6 machine!
Get out of here dude!
Defenses figured Vick out.
Last 6 games
10 TDs, 6 INTS, 11 Fumbs, 3 lost fumbles. So 10 TDs, 9 Turnovers. Eagles were 3-3. Lets get him to Canton.
Marty getting a little ahead of himself with the greatest of all time talk, but I can tell he is extremely excited about having Vick around… Im glad… I too hope they can get this labor stuff sorted out so we can have some football in the fall
Hey Mugzy
Defenses figured Vick out.
so what does that mean ? Please elaborate further..
What it means to me is simple…the other teams coaches and players get paid too
Gotta Luv It.
It means that teams with decent defenses were able to neutralize Vick just like they used to do before he went to prison.
I expect next year’s Vick to be more like the last 6 games of the season than the first 6.
Not to mention, if he survives a full season I’ll be shocked. He’s not that young anymore.
Figuring Vick out is utter nonsense. Teams figured out that the Eagles couldnt block anyone and that we were going to run the ball 65% of the time, thats all that was figured out…Vick was away from the NFL for 3 seasons, first NFL start since his incident came in 2010. Vick will only get better.
Also before Vick went to prison the offensive game plan was much different on ATL.They had designed runs for Vick all the time, Falcons did all of their damage on the ground, between Vick and the RB’s. He was also surrounded with very young players that had not flourished yet. Not too mention the instability of the coaching staff while he was there….Everyone expecting Vick to be the QB of old, just stop it already. This is a different team and most importantly a different QB.
of course I meant pass the ball 65% of the time
Real Talk 777! This is what happens when you are crushed by the grip of logic! You change you arguments like the weather!
As Roger Gordell said…..” I know that there are people out there who are wishing and praying for Mike to fail! And one of those people are mugzybrown!
LMAO…….
@smugzybrown Do you really think defenses have figured out Vick? What i saw was teams sending the all out blitz (because they knew that 65% of the time it was a pass) and the Eagles not blocking it. that combined with Vick not always recognizing the blitz, or his hot reads- I would expect that from his 1st year in this system.
If you truly think teams have “figured out” Vick- then you’re saying that every team we play for 16 weeks is going to be successful against the Eagles offense using a zero blitz. You clearly don’t understand the chess game element to football. If an offense is thriving, other defenses will study what they’re doing and counter it. When they finally find something that “works”, the offensive coaches go back to work with a new plan of attack and counter attack- It’s funny you’d say that Vick is figured out. Have they figured out Brees, Manning, or Brady? Because all those guys have rings but they all got knocked out in the 1st Round just like the Eagles- At least we lost to the eventual champs- No shame in that. Your prized Brees who according to you is ranked higher than Vick couldn’t beat the backed in Seahawks.
