There have been numerous reports that the Eagles are going to workout the quarterback with the fastest 40-yard dash time of the group of what was an athletically gifted group of quarterbacks who worked out at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. I’m talking about Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who ran a 4.51 40 at that combine.
Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reported that Taylor will be paying a visit to the Eagles. Maybe the Eagles want to have a backup quarterback with some of the qualities of their starter Michael Vick. Of course Vick has run in the 4.3 range in the past and like Taylor, he attended Virginia Tech during his college career.
Taylor and Vick are also of comparable sizes, with the younger quarterback standing 6’1″ and weighing 217 pounds. His completion percentage was 59.7 in the 2010 season. He threw 24 touchdowns with five interceptions. The talented young man rushed for 659 yards and scored five touchdowns on the ground.
“Teams are grading me at quarterback and I’m getting good feedback from that,” Taylor said according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I’m a quarterback and I’ve been playing this position since I was five. No other position. My preparation, my training, my thought process comes from being a quarterback. So to play another position, I’d be starting all over again. I’m a winner at quarterback, that’s what I do. Look at the numbers at Virginia Tech that I put up.”
We’re seeing more and more that Eagles head coach Andy Reid likes running quarterbacks, who can pull the ball down and run with it when they get the chance. This puts pressure on the defense and gives them something else to deal with. The first pick of Reid’s career with the Eagles, former Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb had the ability to pull the ball down and make something happen with it.
Reid has to love the way Taylor throws the ball on the run. He’s a talented runner, but he also does a nice job of keeping his eyes downfield as he throws the football. I like his delivery of the ball and his poise under pressure. He has a solid throwing motion and he has a knack for inducing pass rushers to chase him, then finds open receivers in the secondary and gets the ball to them.
Taylor is expected to be picked the fifth or sixth round. I could see the Birds, who are expected to trade backup quarterback Kevin Kolb, so there’s a possibility they could replace him with Taylor.
It is funny that Reid loves running QBs so much, considering that the 1st QB he ever coached and the one he won a SB with was one of the most immobile QBs in the league, in Brett Favre.
bum, true, but maybe that’s WHY he likes running qbs – he didn’t select Farve and he saw him suffering from the inability to run (can anyone say painkiller addiction?)
I can see a sceario where if the Eagles are able to trade Kolb for a couple of
Draft Picks (a #1st Rd and a 4th) or maybe a (#2 and # 3 or something).
I could see the Eagles using one of these extra high picks to Select QB C Kaepernick from Nevada who will most likely go from Mid-3rd to mid 4th area.. He’s very athletic and at 6-5″, 235lbs is much bigger and stronger than Tyrod Taylor who at maybe 6-1″ and 210lbs is a little on the smallish side
I think Favre is highly overrated and isn’t as good as most “experts” try to make him out to be. It makes you wonder if Reid thinks Favre wasn’t that good either and that is why he shies away from players that are like him.
It’s not a new thing Reid has ALWAYS liked mobile QBs. His first choice was Donovan McNabb who started out as a running QB and then transitioned himself into a “Pocket Passer.” I tend to think that’s why McNabb eventually became expendable in the mind of Reid…Well, that and having not won a championship and feeling the heat from upper management to pull the trigger (lol).
I remember him keeping some backup QB because of his athleticism over better passers that were released ( I think it was Paul McMan or something like that.) When that guy got his chance to start he was just horrible. I think that was either 2005 or 2006 maybe. Whatever the case I still will say that in 11 years Reid only drafted one good QB.
McMahon was a free agent signing from the Lions who was a career back-up and played well in 2-3 late season games for the Lions since he was mobile and could run. not much of a QB though…Good thing he was Irish or he wouldn’t have lasted 2 weeks in Philly..
