Chase Utley hasn’t been talking to the media of late but he’s supposed to talk with the media later today. I doubt that he’ll add anything to the what’s been said so far.
This is the strangest situation. One of the best players on the team which is supposed to win the World Series is hurt, but nobody knows what the team is going to do to help him get well.
All we’ve done is sit and wait for something to happen with Utley and his injured knee, but so far nothing has happened.
Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. couldn’t add anything new. The Phils are getting ready to come north this week and Utley will start the season on the Disabled List.
“There’s really nothing new,” Amaro said. “I think it feels better but it’s kind of a long term process.”
Are we going to see Utley just sit on the bench for the entire season? When is something going to give? Amaro still doesn’t have an answer.
“I’m sure he’s frustrated,” Amaro said recently. “He should be frustrated. We all would. But actually his demeanor is pretty good. I know he’s disappointed he’s not playing, but he understands it, and he’s being patient as he possibly can. He’s not a real patient guy, but overall he’s being pretty patient.
“He’s not happy he’s not playing, but he’s not distraught.”
Utley continues to take batting practice, field ground balls while sitting on a stool and stand around with nothing to say.
When is a sense of urgency going to kick in?
I guess simply leaving your constituency in the dark is how business is done nowadays. If Utley has an overuse, chronic tendonitis problem that requires rest, guess what happens as soon as he starts to stress it again. The bigger issue is that there is no way that this wasn’t a problem during the offseason, and Utley put his teammates in a very bad situation. There is no way it just recently got bad. I wish Utley well, want him back, but he screwed the team and it’s fans.
