Would NFL Allow Eagles & Cards To Make A “Wink & A Nod” Deal for Kolb & Peterson?

Would the NFL allow the Eagles to accept a trade with the Cardinals that would have the Birds getting talented rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson, and letting Arizona get their quarterback of the future, Kevin Kolb? The Eagles would have somebody to play the right cornerback position for a long time. The presence of the enormously talented young man on the defensive side of the ball would immediately upgrade the Birds secondary. Of course the Cardinals would finally have a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner.

Would the Eagles be interested in acquiring talented Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett? Dockett would upgrade the Eagles pass rush because he would provide pressure from inside which would make the defensive ends better. He’s averaged six sacks over the last four years despite being double-teamed and that would be a tremendous improvement over Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley.

Or are the Cardinals eager to part with multiple 2012 picks for Kolb? Although the picks wouldn’t help the Eagles right now, it would allow them to get some compensation for Kolb before he leaves and they wind up with nothing for him.

Those are the questions that pop into my head when I read what ESPN’s Adam Schefter had to say about a possible deal between the Eagles and the Cardinals with regards to Kolb.

“The market for Kolb will be similar to what it was before, minus the San Francisco 49ersand Cincinnati Bengals. I still think the Seattle Seahawks will have some interest. And still think the Arizona Cardinals are the overwhelming favorites to land his services.

The Cardinals and Eagles were allowed to discuss a deal at various points this offseason, including the first day of the draft. Arizona had the chance to draft Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert in Round 1 — and passed. That tells me that the Cardinals believe they can find a way to land Kolb once trades are allowed. And Philadelphia knows it has to trade Kolb for this reason: After this season, Kolb’s contract is set to expire. The Eagles can’t afford to pay both Michael Vick, whom they intend to re-sign to a long-term deal, and Kolb. So if Philadelphia wants to get back compensation for Kolb, this will be the time to do it. And if Arizona wants to compete in the NFC West, Kolb is the quarterback to lead the way. It’s an ideal match. And I think eventually, ultimately, it will happen.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league office have made it clear that they won’t allow teams to make a “wink and a nod” trade where a team drafts a player which another team is interested in, then trades that player to that said team when trades are again allowed in the league. It’s a way of getting around the no trade situation which now governs every team in the league and was also in place before the draft.

I don’t think the league would allow the Eagles and the Cardinals to make such a trade because it would clearly have violated the previous statements made by the NFL.

is it possible , a majority of the owners are sticking it to the birds right now.? you have a handful of teams interested in kolb and the eagles. you probably have 25 teams have no interest in kolb and probably have no interest in seeing 2 teams reap the benefits of a trade. do you really think jerry jones wanted the eagles taking the spotlight with a draft day trade and getting a top pick? just throwing it out there.

Did the NFL truly believe there wouldn’t be any “wink and nod deals” being discussed? Its ridiculous to disallow trades of any players, reguardless of when they were drafted. The Eagles are getting screwed over hard here already, to do any further damage by not allowing them to make a deal for Kolb would be cause for a lawsuit in its own right.

nev, I think that’s up there with Songs and youtube. The owners’ motive is well known already – $ and power. And even with your explanation, those 25 teams would just sit there and be happy with Jerry Jones’s ploy? Doubt it. It benefits EVERY team to end the locket. I really really think that.

Why does the “NFL” care or feel obligated to look the other way on what the Eagles do with Kolb, then would they have to look the other way when the Redksins trying to deal McNabb, or the Titans with V Young or the Bengals with Palmer.. Every team has players stuck in limbo and it’s just the way it is..
One last thing, there is no way the Cardinals would trade one of the most talented athletes in this entire draft at a premier position in CB Peterson for a QB who had 7 NFL Starts under his Belt . There is just no way
Cardinal have 2 2nd YEar QB on their roster already (max HAll/J Skelton) who both stunk it up last year but players in which they feel have upside and potential down the road, The CArdinals are in the market for a veteran QB who can win now and has experience and is a 2 year bridge to the young QB’s they have on their roster.. Marc Bulger, TIm Hasselbeck come to mind who are both free-agents and would cost the Cardinals nothing but salary to obtain..
Seattle is the only team (maybe the Dolphins) who I see interested in Kolb

G:
Either way, I’d be happy. I still say Vick is an injury waiting to happen; even with an improved OL. We need Kolb to come in and pick the team up when (in my opinion,) Vick eventually goes down. And he may be down an extended period of time. If we can’t get good value for Kolb, (and by that I mean a 1st round pick and 3rd round pick; or a 1st round pick and a good player,) then take the value of having him with your team ready to play in 2011. It’s not the best case scenario, but it’s not bad either.
Finally, during the season, all kinds of opportunities open up for trading a quality QB. The Eagles were stuck bad by the lockout. But they should NOT panic, G.

The Cardinals would have to sign Peterson first. They can’t trade an unsigned player according to the NFL directive. They likely won’t sign him until training camp, so it’s hard to think Kolb will have that much value to the Cardinals if they don’t get him until that late.

G, If you go back to some of your earlier posts you’ll see i’ve been saying this for the longest time, find the team thats biggest need is a QB then watch the draft, If that team doesnt take a QB and picks up somebody we can use then thats the team we made a deal with, be it Cromartie or Peterson one of them is coming here for Kolb, I believe it will be straight up for Peterson or Cromartie and a pick, this is more than obvious.

Would love Peterson, but you can pretty much kiss this possibility away. Not gonna happen. I don’t think the Eagles would have any interest in DRC, unless they can’t sign a guy like Nnamdi in FA.Id say kolb goes for multiple picks. Maybe a 1st rounder and Docket? IS Docket good against the run?

Who would you rather have, Nnamdi or Patrick Peterson?

G it shouldn’t be overlooked that the Eagles have another option regarding Kolb. If they were not offered, in the Eagles’ opinion, “fair compensation” for Kolb once trades and free agency is allowed, they could elect to retain Kolb for the 2011 season along with his cap friendly salary and then Franchise him at the end of the season (assuming such a tag exists under a new CBA) a la Matt Cassell. Looking back on that 2009 trade, the Patriots gave up Cassell and 12 yr veteran LB Mike Vrabel for the Chiefs 2009 2nd rd pick. Just on the basis that word around many NFL circles that Kolb could net a 1st round pick (and maybe more) after starting only 7 games when Cassell played in 16 games and started 15 while bringing only a 2nd rd pick is evidence that the League as a whole is currently starving for NFL ready QBs. The downside of course is that by franchising Kolb the Eagles would no longer hold the leverage they currently have because the Eagles would be on the hook for approx. $15-20 million for a backup QB and teams could lowball them with offers. Of course this also assumes that Vick will be offered a long term contract at some point making Kolb’s future in the NFL playing on another team an virtual certainty. There are no guarantees in the NFL and prognosticators serve more to fill space, introduce opinions and hold discussions than accurately predicting events. Paradigms can be turned on their head quickly with a single decision (see Vick announcement as starting QB) and as such trying to read the tea leaves in the NFL usually winds up as an often entertaining exercise that doubles as a complete waste of time and energy.

One last note re: a possible “wink and nod” deal between the Eagles and Cardinals: I would think that the NFL would bear the burden of proof to negate such a deal. How could they possibly prove it? I think the Eagles and Cardinals would have plausible deniability in such a situation if trades were to open and the NFL attempted to deny such a trade. Both teams would be filling a need, and how could the NFL prove that the Eagles wouldn’t have taken a different prospect with Cardinals pick had they been allowed to make a trade prior to the draft.

In summary, I think the NFL would have a very difficult time trying to justify denying such a trade since most evidence would be circumstantial at best.

Paulman I have repeatedly read you talk about what Kolb is not. What is a starting qb worth to the Cardinals? A 10th round pick? A 15th round pick? If Kolb is who they have targeted and they have to sign him to a long term deal isnt he worth the # 1 pick in the draft to them? Hes the friggin franchise qb in there eyes. lol Worth more than any DB, OL, DL, LB anyone. Peterson isnt more important than Kolb. No franchise qb in place the Cardinals win 6 games even with Peterson. I Personally think Kolb sucks but If I was sold on him no damn draft pick is worth more than a franchise qb. I was like you and couldnt believe teams are that high on Kolb. Im past that. If teams want him as the starting qb(the most important position on the team) any player on the Cardinals is expendable. Let go like I did Paulman it feels good.

Xtian, very smart. I didn’t think of that. However, we can’t predict what the QB market is going to look like in a years time so I would rather deal him now. This is not a bad option if we do keep him for a year, because we can still get SOME value for the guy, and you have a “capable” backup.

I honestly don’t think the Cards are going to give us Peterson. I think they value Peterson over Kolb, as really they should.

Still haven’t gotten an answer: Who would you rather have on the Eagles, Peterson or Nnamdi?

To Muimuiman

All things being equal I would prefer Petersen for he has a 10-12 year Career ahead of him, I do think he would eventually play at FS as a Pro instead of a CB
and let him roam around kind of like Charles Woodson does for the Packers and Troy Palamolu does for the Steelers.. Isn’t the new Cardinal DC from the Steelers.. Asmo is a Top CB right now but probably has 3-4 Seasons left.
To Dag, I understand what your saying about how does any team really feel about Kolb on whether he’s # 1 QB/Franchise material.. but I try to realistic and based on the CArdinals already having 2 young unproven QB’s on their Roster that they invested time & $$$ last year with, I beliebe the Cardinals are looking for a short-term Veteran QB who has won in te NFL.. Bulger/HAsselbeck are free-agents and would cost zippo in return for the CArdinals to sign them, why should they trade High Picks if they are looking for a 2 year bridge until one of their uyoung QB’s from last year develops..

The longer this lockout goes, the greater the chance that Kolb remains as the
Eagle Back-up for 2011 for a couple of reasons
If this goes into July, which is very likely, Kolb would have litte time going into a new system to be able to really contribute much unless he goes to a team with a similar system (Seattle has former Viking PC Coordinator who euns B Childress system which is very similar to the Eagles)
COnversely, If we get in July before any CBA or at least OTA/CAmps can begin, who would the Eagles be able to obtain and caoch up in a shortened camp scenario.. Kafka is not ready to be the #2 Back-up
Hence, the Eagles keep Kolb as Back-up for 2011 in the event that Vick gets hurt and if he rides the bench all year and Vick missed no games (which is doubtful) then he walks and the Eagles would get a compensatory pick in 2013 Draft. If Vick misses a lot of time an dKolb steps in and actually plays well, then maybe Eagles offer him an extended deal if Vick only has a 1 Year Deal and never gets a long-term deal which is again a possibility..if Vick gets a long-term deal, then Kolb is a goner, but How about if Vick doesn’t sign a long-term Deal and wants more $$$$, maybe it’s Vick who walks after the 2011 Season for more $$$… still lots that can happen but either way, the Eagles would be smart to hang onto to Kolb for 2011 based on his knowledge of system, realtively cheap salary and a insurance in case Vick would sustain a major injury or even have some off-the field issue

Paulman, what you are effectively saying is the Eagles will give up a 1st round pick and more to keep a backup QB and an injury safety blanket for Vick however another team will not give up a 1st rounder and change to receive a franchise QB of the future?

Secondly I know we cant trust what AR says to the media but I am beginning to be sold on Kafka as a backup from the reports I am hearing.

Thirdly, even if trades arent available until June.. teams will still be in the market for him because Kolb is still relatively young and they are planning for the long term, not just the season ahead.

Fourth, do you see Fitzgerald being happy if the team signed Bulger or Hasslebeck? They need to keep their #1 guy happy and they need to win now before the team slips into ‘rebuilding mode’. They are only a couple years from a superbowl appearance remember.

Mimitaro you are exactly right. Why in the world would the Eagles give up a #1 pick, a player and possibly multiple picks to keep Kolb as a backup for 1 year? LOL. That is ridiculous. I dont care if Vick gets hurt the first game. I STILL wouldnt keep Kolb for 1 year and let him walk for nothing. Has anyone seen Kolb play? Remember the Redskin game when he could only complete 2 yard passess? GB game he looked like a scared rabbit? Are you kidding me. AJ Feeley was better than Kolb with less talent around him.

Bulger an HAssleback had accomplished a whole lot more than the Kolb ever has.. CArdinals have really started to build their team like the Steelers (Mos tof the Staff is from Pittsbirgh), they are not going to be a pass-happy team and sling it around 40-50 times a game lie when K Warner whas QB, they drafted some more RB’s and plan to be a running team.. a Bulger or Hasslebak costs them nothing to obain via free-agency.. plus they draft 2 younq QB last draft hat they like for the future.. Another thing……….This was reported

Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News has floated an interesting theory regarding Asomugha’s ultimate destination. Per Sabin, the Cowboys could try to land Asomugha, in large part to keep him from going to the Eagles.

If Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones want Asomugha……How many of you here believes our Golden Standard will pay more?

Start looking at 2nd and 3rd Tier players (garbage) to man the right corner this year or Trevard Lindley who will get toasted.

For those who might be wishful thinking by using Asante Samuel’s signing to say the Eagles can give out big pay,…… please keep in mind.

The Eagles were not in a bidding war with the Redskins and Dallas for him.

Getting that one player would immediately solidfy us as a favorite in the NFC coupled with a serious offence and Jerry will have none of it.

If the Eagles outbid these teams we’ll know the Eagles are shooting for it all this year…but if they let Dallas get him that will also send a message.

Dallas will not keep Newman if Asomugha is signed, so maybe we’ll take their reject who was torched countless times by our receivers.

Who here think the Eagles will pay more for Asomugha?

paulman

I think the Redskins will land him (Amso) giving them one of the best Secondaries in the enitre NFL after paying him a huge Salary

CB – Asmo and D Hall
Safeties – L Landry and A Otegwe (who they sigend as free-agent before the lockout)
DL — Orapko, Jenkins, Kerrigan (and if Haynesworth returns) watch out

I do think the Eagles will pursue him, but they will go in with a certain $$ in mind but will not get into to bidding war to “overpay” for him and in the end, I think he signs with the Redskins

Why can’t the Eagles win a bidding war?

It’s not like we have a plethora needs to spend the money on.

We’ve addressed the Offensive line with Watkins and Jackson coming back.

We’ve improved the linebackers and safety position with the draft.

What will we hurt by overpaying for Asmo?

This is the BS that pisses me off.

When the Cowboys were winners they still went out and added Deion Sanders to win a bowl….Why can’t we go over the top to send a message not only to the fan base but to the league….

That we’re willing to go all out when the opportunity is there.

A shut down secondary is more valuable than a defensive line because it’s the last line of defense that gives the defensive line more time to get the QB.

We can solve our problems and make a run with Asmo…that alone should make him the priority even if we have to spend more than we think he deserves.

The Alternative is grim and just keeps us in the middle of the pack or respectable at best.

Will we seize this opportunity?

Most Eagles fans would just say he just cost too much…

The two teams that will bid for him have Lombardi trophies in their cubbard and an insatiable appetite for more.

We can expect to not land him…

That’s what we’re use to….So to ignore that reality, we as fans become the watchers of our Eagles Front Office wallets and explain the opportunity off by stating….”We couldn’t over pay him”.

Well…..look in your trophy case before making ridiculous excuses for an already Multimillionaire in Jeffrey Lurie…..overpaying Asmo is a drop in the bucket compared to his take.

Paulman, and Songs, you don’t think Nnamdi is paying any attention to the team he’s going to sign with, just the $? If that’s what you think, I hear you, he’s going to make a shit ton on $ wherever he goes. But I think that there’s another factor involved – wanning to get a ring. I can’t sit here and pretend I know how the two factors weigh in his mind, what percentage of the decision it will be… but seeing as he’s been a Raider so far (and I bet even you Songs admit that the Raiders have sucked (in his tenure there) more than any team in the NFC East. That said, who has the best offense of the Eagles Cowboys and Redskins. Who has the best playoff record in the past years? Who has the most stable coaching staff/QB situation? I say that it is quite possible, if it comes down to those three teams, that Nnamdi thinks the Eagles are the best shot to win a SB in the next few years. You can agree or disagree with me, and opt to let your bias about how good/close to a SB the Eagles are or aren’t cloud your judgement (here’s looking at you Songs), but I think that looking at the sweepstakes as a $ only thing is foolish. Period.

Songs, I want him too and think it should be their #1 priority too. The answer to your question though, about where else do we have to spend money is Desean Jackson, LeSean McCoy (not looked up past his rookie deal) and Mike Vick/whatever we do with that QB position in the next 3-5 years. We will need to resign Maclin in a bit…. there ARE other NEEDS for $ allocations. But I still say they CAN and SHOULD go after Nnamdi. Nnamdi already said he wants to go play for a good team that has a shot. The Redskins just can’t be characterized that way. And who’s a better QB right now in the NFL – Vick or Romo. Who’s the more experienced winning coach, Reid or Garrett? Who’s won the division more, as of late, boys or birds?

Let’s go with the assumption the Eagles gave the Cards Kolb and threir 2011 fourth round picks for the cards 5th overall pick. We all assume the Eagles would have taken Peterson, at least I did. The Lions offered the Cardinals their 1, 2nd and third round picks of 2011. If the eagles did the deal here are some combinations they could have had while keeping all 11 picks.
1st – Fairley 2nd- Bowers
1st – Quinn 2nd Pea or Austin
Can you believe those 2 picks to add to the current draft and then getting a cornerbaqck in free agency. This teams would be crazy.

Some real wishful thinking J Phalines , Trade scenarios including players were not allowed during Draft time and still aren’t and won’t be for a while or until the parties are back at the Negiotiating Table and that’s probably mid-late June at the earliest.
On Asmo, the Eagles will internally set a # for Asmo and his Agent ( 4 years $75 Package with $15 in Guaranteed in his 1st Year as a Signing Bonus which then pays out a $15 Million Salary over the 4 Years of his Contract) I think the Redskins/Cowboys will top this offer for they need him more than the Eagles do and especially since the Redskins/Cowboys know they have to stop/limit the Eagles Offense if they want to seriously contrend for a NFC East Crown
But the Eagles will not get caught in a bidding war for it’s something that they just don’t do, They will come up with a good package for Asmo and present it, but it probably is not going to he good/large/ enough and will be up to Asmo to take less if he really wants to play for the Eagles (like Cliff Lee did with the Phils last off-season) I think Asmo definitely wants to play for SB Contender but we also have to realize that at 30 Years of age, this will be his final contract to really cash in

You are the biggest double talker in here with the DNA of sweat from the crack of Reid’s ass.

Signing Asmo would have no impact at all on the future contracts of Vick and Djax…..that’s why there’s big signing bonuses in deals….that allows the yearly cap number to stay intact. Come on Schill….we watch football .O K?

They can get a blockbuster deal with a big signing bonus having the yearly amount that counts against the cap within reason..period and this have no baring at all when signing your own players…a matter of fact you have better leverage with the players already under contracts with tags and these same players will take a reasonable contract knowing we can compete for a championship…so…kill it.

If the Eagles want Asmo…they can get him if they’re willing to pay the Most..He’s not going to leave millions of dollars out there because he thinks Eagles are closer now, when he can also feel him going to the Cowboys might make them better than us. Jerry Jones can be very persuasive and will put his money where his mouth is.

There were multiple reports of the eagles getting a first round pick for kolb, so why wouldnt the cardinals of traded the pick, moved down, and drafed a QB instead? Also all the people talking about the rogers-cromartie trade… why wouldnt the cardinals rather trade the “prospect” instead of the guy that has already proven he could play ?

zolt – the idea of trading ‘the prospect’ instead of the guy that has already proven he can play is as follows – they very well may think that ‘the prospect’ has a good chance to be better than ‘the vet’ right away. That’s all.

Maybe zona thought that the QBs they could’ve gotten from trading down were no better prospects than signing a bulger or a Hasselback..etc… and they thought Petersen was a dynamo pick at #5. I think that’s totally possible. But hey, I want the trade to go down too.. we’ll see

I don’t understand the fascinations of who the CArdinals selected at #5 this year.. They need held in their Secondary and Selected probably the most athletic player in the entire draft at a Position of need.. For those who don’t remember, the CArdinals selecting 2 QB’s last year– Drafted J SKelton and signed as Rookie-free-agent undrafted Max Hall who they are very high on..
Are they simply going to scrap these players after 1 Season, why add a another young QB in this years Draft from a relatively weak class..
Cardinals will pursue a veteran QB via Free-Agency for a 2 year bridge until 1 of the 2 young QB on their roster already are ready to go.. Look for a M Bulger or M Hasselback who they can acquire for the short-term and not give up any Draft picks in the Process.. Cardinals are not looking to trade P Petersen under any circumstances..

Cardinals OG Allen Faneca officially retired from the Cardinals today..
Wonder if the Eagles/Cardinals have a “Wink and Nod Deal” to send Draft Pick Danny Watkins and Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals for their 1st Round pick next year and players CB DR Cromartie and QB John Skelton…
See how ridiculous this sounds….
