DeSean Jackson Confident About New Contract And Future With Eagles

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson was on the Fanatic radio station, 97.5 FM on Sunday afternoon with host Tim McManus and he had quite a bit to say. Jackson did the telephone interview from California where he lives during the off season.

As for football subjects, Jackson didn’t get specific about his workouts, but he did say he’s staying in shape.

“I’m just trying to keep myself in great shape,” Jackson said Sunday. “I’m working out with my coaches, the coaches who have been training me since I was a little kid. I’m trying to stay active in the community. I can’t really sit around until the lockout is over. I need to try to do everything I can to be ready as an athlete when the lockout is over.”

I don’t know what Jackson is doing but it didn’t sound like he was hurting himself working out during his time back home in California. At one point during the conversation with McManus, Jackson said he’s doing more off the field than on the field this off season.

Jackson said that he does plan on getting in some workouts when he comes back this way this weekend, which would be a good thing. Other teams are getting in workouts, the Eagles skill position players need to take some time and get in some work.

I personally don’t think his agent Drew Rosenhaus has been making enough noise about getting him a new contract but DeSean swears by him and he praised him during the interview.

“I know Drew has a plan and that’s the biggest thing, because we really don’t know when the lockout is going to end,” he said. “Drew has been keeping me patient and motivating me and trying not to have me focus on my contract. That’s’ why I have him, so he can do his job and do what he needs to do, so me, as a player can feel confident and know he will do the best thing possible for me. I just really pray and hope that he works it out. I believe in him and know he can work it out for me. That’s why he’s Drew Rosenhaus. He gets paid to do what he needs to do. And that’s’ why in my eyes he’s one of the best.”

As far as I’m concerned, Rosenhaus went too far when he was trying to force the Eagles to give Terrell Owens a new contract, but he hasn’t done nearly enough to help DeSean get a new deal.

As for Kevin Kolb, Jackson didn’t have anything but great things to say about him, but I can tell that he wanted Michael Vick quarterbacking this team once both quarterbacks played a game this past season. Here are his comments about Kolb. “He’s a great quarterback. He’s young … He’s a real down to earth guy … During my time with the Eagles, he’s showed me he’s so much of a leader and a very competitive guy. I really can’t [know] his future. Whatever it is, I think he’ll do great. I just wish him the best whether he stays with us or goes his own way.”

DeSean couldn’t remember the name of any of the players which the Eagles drafted a couple of weekends ago, but he praised the draft anyway: * On the draft: “I think they had a productive draft … I think they got some young heat … I’m ready to go to camp and get this thing going … I feel very confident about it.”

Chances are Jackson knows very little about the guys which the Eagles picked, but so what.

I dont think they sign him. I think the Eagles are going to look for him to take a fragment of what he wants which is top 5 WR salary which is what he is seeking. I do not think he deserves it. He is not a every down WR he only scores you the big play which is good but top 5 WR salary? no.. Desean is not going to give the eagles a break. There is plenty of team that would love to sign him to a top 5 WR salary such as The Panthers.

Maybe the eagles can sign Lakers C Andrew Bynum to WR this season cause dude gonna be out of basketball awhile.. Or at least he should. I say a 20 game suspension after that embarrassing act.

Sry cant agree with you on that one VRIC. Desean should EASILY get top 5 wideout pay. he has above average hands. He has Elite speed i believe top 5 in the league if im not mistaken. With the ball in his hands i honeslty cant think of one other player who can hurt you in so many diffrent ways than Jackson can. End arounds, deep throws, punts, and even across the middle occasionlly he can and will score you points. He has the ability to shift and cut on a dime and really make people look stupid. He is pure excitement. You can try to knock his size, but size doesnt matter if you cant catch him. For the most part he has remained healthy too.

I can envsion a Scenario for the Eagles in the coming year..
Eagles Trade Kolb to Seahawks for Draft Picks in 2012 Draft
Eagle QB Vick sustains major Knee injury putting his carreer in jeopardy
Eagles then Trade D-JAx to San Fran 49ers for QB Alex Smith to lead the Eagles… Good Grief…

Eaglez we seen Desean get shut down before. He is not unstopable. I dont think he ranks in a class with Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald or Reggie Wayne. I think he is a step behind those guys. I would love to keep him but I do not think the eagles will match an offer for him if he did get top 5 WR money

I would agree with everyone on that list to a point VRIN. i would put Desean on a level playing field with Wayne at this point only becase on waynes age. Desean can be jammed at the line of scrimmage i will not deny that(once again leading back to his size). If he gets off the line and two steps behind the defenders though its LIGHTS OUT. I will go on record as saying again though that Desean is MORE DANGEROUS with the ball in his hands than anyone you just listed as far as speed, quickness, juke ability, and just flat out play making. I do c your point though its a double edged sword with him ……but i think his pors far out weigh his cons. Just my opinion.

Lets see……. 170lbs. Deshawn Jackson……. One of the most explosive WR’s in Eagle green history…… James Thrash, Todd Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell, #’s dont even compare to what Deshawn Jackson has accomplished in such a short period…..

@Vricchini…… The reason why Deshawn was shut down was because of Andy’s coaching scheme….. We pass at a 65% ratio compared to Vick’s run during broken plays or pass coverage was great……. Drop back 8 players with only 5 targets you do the math bro…… If AR comes with more of a balanced approach…… He’s going to do #’s……. With only 47 catches and a thousand yard season……. That speaks something!!!!!!!! Give the guy what he deserves…… Pay the man…….. Down town Reggie Brown said sooooo!!!

I think the best thing about Deshawn is the fact all our other receivers are much better with him on the field. He commands a double team every time he is on the field. Maclin and Avant benefit from him. Celek as well. He takes players with him and the middle is wide open half the time. Speed kills in the NFL(No Football League) and he has some to spare. He will be paid, he will stay.

How could Drew do more to get Desean a new contract? Single handedly end the lockout and change the rules? Maybe go back into time when the last labor deal was made and change the rules regarding contracts in this situation? If he can do that, I can see how he’s not doing enough for Desean’s contract.

jroc757

May 9, 2011 11:27 am

Deshawn is top 5 period……. Hands down…… I have to back this up because he is a game changer…… Reggie wayne is good but we’ve seen him get away from time to time…… He’s also under man coverage/ 1 on 1……… Deshawn has 2 men at almost all times sometimes 3 men……. Demitri Patterson played Reggie Wayne well and that was primarily 1 on 1…… Deshawn gets doubled tripled team…….

-Larry Fitz had nobody to throw him the ball I’ll give him a pass on that…… Andre Johnson is a beast but he isnt getting the double team he once use to receive…..
– Ocho Cinco isnt what he use to be……
– T.J. Houz had a down season……
– Anquan Boldin….. Had a good season but has nagging hamstring injuries quite often
– Hines ward is considered a utility receiver….. He can block well and make key catches but isn’t the most explosive….. The Steelers coaching scheme allows them to be successful because they run a balanced scheme….. Our receivers are way better then them on paper but like I said they stay commited to run/pass game!!!
– Miles Austin….. Good but maybe a 1 hit wonder…….
– Calvin Johnson is a beast top 5 regardless
– Roddy White top 5 deserves it…..
– Santonio Holmes is an excellent receiver and makes key catches during any given moment….. He’s top 10 in my book…..
– Braylon Edwards is good but lacks concentration…… Drops passes and he’s a guy who lacks self-esteem……. Off the field issues makes him suspect……..
– Terrell Owens getting older but had a great season in Cincy….. Not worth top money anymore but what team would want him with his attitude diva ways???? Not even Dallas would take another chance with him!!!!
– Steve Smith…… (Both) they are good Wr’s but have injuries that seem to haunt them every season…….. The older steve smith has heart but isnt the steve smith of old……. The steve smith of the Giants is a killer on 3rd downs but is a killer late in season after receiving punishment for catching 3rd down passes…… Eli will give him an early retirement!!!! LOL
– Brandon Marshall….. Had a down season with no Qb…… Recent hip surgery could decline him and off the field issues with him and women!!!!! If you ask me it seems like he’s the problem or victim in every dispute…. Top 10 in my book…..
– Donald Driver…… The same as Hines Ward very reliable and has the experience……. Good guy to have in the slot like Jason Avant and he’s a motivator…… Cant ask for nothing more/ Often injured as well but plays through them often!!!
– Greg Jennings Is a great Wr…… He’s #6 in my book…….. Very good player and has great hands as well…… I like him a ton…….. Cant say nothing more about GB and them drafting well at WR……
– Marquis Colston his size makes him great…… He often lines up in the slot which is monster because Sean Payton is playing Chess….. He knows this is a disadvantage and it works out well…… I wish AR had the same instinct but we all know too well that aint happening!!!!!! He’s top 10
– Duane Bowe is a beast…. Top 5 and is compared to a young Terrell Owens with his skills and explosiveness….. He is a guy who is going to do #’s thoughout his career……
– Percy Harvin good Wr but has migraine’s that set him back……. Often injured at times but he’s a very explosive player!!!!!

Top 5 not in order
– D. Jax
– Reggie Wayne
– D. Bowe
– A. Johnson
– R. White/ L. Fitz but he had nobody to throw him the ball! and he’s getting older!!!!

If Andy Reid coaches differently…….. We can dead this whole D-Jax isnt an every down receiver……. If you pass every down than how can a team function correctly…….. The colts realized that and did a ton of moves to help their front-line……. And to protect Peyton Manning because he got touched quite often this season more than ever!!!!! I hope Vick can become a better QB but with andy’s pass pass pass scheme can make his stay in Philly short…..

Agreed Jroc. I think the problem is going to come in with the salary cap in the next few years(and yes everyone read that right lol) Think about it. Desean i think will get 8 to ten a year. Eventually i think Maclin could get 6 to 8 a year. Then you have Vick who i think will prob get 3 or 4 years for about 12- 15 a year. I know we have penny pinching lurie and banner running this team and we r WAY under cap beacuse of it but i really think it could become a problem sooner than later

Wow I cannot believe the peopleo on this site sometimes. If anyone does’nt believe that they should sign D Jak to a longer term multi year deal making him one of the most highest paid WR’S in the game then you simply should not be a fan of this team. 900+ yards in his rookie season? Thats ‘exactly how much that over hyped rookie Mike Williams on Tampa had last season, and supposely he’s already an elite WR. People keep sayin that Jackson gets shut down in some games, that may be the case, but what WR does’nt? R White, Calvin Johnson, Andre, and even Fitz have off days and get shut down. This is the NFL with other great defense players on the other side with NFL coaches. Eventually the defense will when the battle. The past 2 seasons he has had over 1000 yards. With only 47 catches last season, that is insane. Even when he is’nt making catches he is stretching the field and has defenses on there feet at all times. When D jak isnt in the Offense just is not the same. That is why we have Maclin. When D jak is having a off day and isnt getting the deep ball we can just feed him the ball. Not to mention Djak is the best PR in football (I dont care what anyones says hes even better than Devin Hester in my opinion)

#15) M Colston- 84 Rec 1023 Yds 12 avg 7 TD’s & 12 Rec over 20 yds

Before everyone jumps on the Top #5 WR in then entire NFL,
You have to look at Durability, TD’s Catches and the # of Receptions..
IF D-Jax can get up to 65 Catches (4 per game avg) , he would have close to 1300-1400 yds and hopefully more TD’s but you have to play all 16 Games to reach these type of #’s and play well against the good teams too.. As you can see, there are lots of Good WR’s all across the NFL..

I feel bad for people on here that base their opinions on D-Jax from a purely statistical point of view from the 2011 season by spending the time to gather it all up and post it on here. Because their just wasting your time. If that were the case Brandon Lloyd would be the highest paid receiver in the NFL which is a complete joke because an NFL coach would prolly choose 15-20 receivers or more in the league over him to have on his team. You can’t measure D-Jax’s top NFL WR ability based on numbers. D-Jax is probably the biggest game changer in the entire NFL when he is just on the field period. And yet I’ve heard people on here who want to trade him for somebody that might have more catches in a season. Thats ridiculous..the WR positon is a position where numbers can be very misguided. When a receiver plays on a very good team the team is obvioulsy not throwing the ball as much because their usually in the lead unlike one who plays on a poor team (Brandon Lloyd). If there are no other substantial playmakers on the field, a wide receiver will obviously catch a ton more balls(B. Marshall/R. White). PLaying indoors/outdoors, playing with a great QB vs inaacurate QB, matching up agasint the #1 corner on the opposing defense wk after wk…I could go on forever with all the diff factors. The fact is D-Jax is a top 5 NFL receiver in the league today. Don’t forget all the games he won us with his return skills…Fitz and Andre cant do that.

Revis was asked who was more difficult to play against in regard to a big physical WR like Fitz or Calvin Johnson or a samller lighting fast guy like D-Jax and his answer was D-Jax. I’ll base my thoughts on the people who actually have to cover these guys instead of some pointless stat sheet from the 2011 season.

pheags88
pheags88
May 9, 2011 3:19 pm

How about instead of having the mindset of wanting to trade D-Jax(who may be the best player on our team) for a bigger physical WR…think about complimenting D-Jax with that type of WR. Im so over having Avant as our slot guy..if one more person says he has the best hands on the team im going to throw up. Ive seen him drop some of the more easiest passes including some TDs in the redzone. He cant run by anybody either. I would even trade Maclin for a bigger guy on the other side of the ball before I even thought about trading DJax. I wanted the Eagles to draft Greg Little out of North Carolina. I thought he would be a perfect compliment and a real threat in the slot.

paulman
paulman
May 9, 2011 3:54 pm

Greg Little will be a beast at the NFL level and I wanted the Eagles to grab him also.. I agree with Pheags that Avant is a nice 4th/5th WR on most teams but not a 3rd WR.. and I am not completely sold of how productive R Cooper will be.. D-Jax/MAclin are great talents, but they can be hit around & intimidated though Maclin made some nice improvements, the remainder of the Receiving Corps (Avanta,Cooper & Hall) would struggle to make most other teams rosters as a 4th/5th WR..
I gather the infor (that took my 5 minutes) because it shows as usual that the Philly Fans tend to overrate their players.. D-JAx is electric and the most dangerous open field Receiver in the NFL, but his durability issues and his lack of be a viable threat in the Red-ZOne/LAck of Blocking may not have him quite as high and many of you think…
When did Revis ever cover D-Jax in a Regular Season game.. Never…
Maybe the Pro-Bowl.. C’Mon man…

You know what’s funny? We here guys in Philly who always gives excuses on why the Eagles should not give their top players top money.

Now..DJax is too small…Give me a damn break….He strikes fear in any defense yet he’s too small and may get injured.

How big was Bo Jackson? How big was Leonard Weaver? How big was T.O. last year when he got injured and how big was he when we made the run while he was down during the playoffs?

All players in the NFL run the risk of being imjured, and what might happen is not a factor in determining contracts.

Players in all positions get injured.

What should DJax get according to his play?

That’s what he will get paid …here..or on a team who knows what a gamechanger is.

Yeah let’s not pay him….let’s get Riley cooper in there and sign Greg Lewis……”VALUE”

You say he has dropped some easy balls i will agree with you there, hell a couple still piss me off.If i recall though even the hall of famers rice and carter dropped some balls albiet occasionally. That being said i honestly would take avant over 90 percent of the current number three guys in the nfl. He doesnt have the best speed or the flashiest numbers but his hands r not only the best on our team but some of the best in the league. He also is extremely fearless over the middle of the field and finds a way to make a play. I remember a couple of times seeing him get destroyed over the middle and still come down with the ball. Ill take a guy like that anyday.

No doubt D jax is an awesome WR but he is not top 5 WR money. At 16 million a year which is what he is seeking. His stats I agree do not show what he does on the field but there is some gaps in his yardage per game. Being in the west coast offense I dont see Andy Reid signing a WR to this kind of money. you may think because I dont think he is worth 16 million a year im not a eagle fan which is not the case. You have Jeromy Maclin, Avant and Riley Cooper who are all legit WR who will take catches away from D jax’s numbers. I would not put him on the same level as Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson cause these guys are both future hall of famers. D jax is not quite there yet but we will see.

May 9, 2011 7:19 pm

I read an interview that Revis did in which he said a small speedy guy like D-Jax is harder to cover from a CB’s view than a bigger stronger guy like A. Johnson. I also heard the interview being talked about on philly sport radio one day when I was listening at work. Furthermore, D-Jax is the face of the Eagles right now and the face for the future of the team(Dont give me Vick who is already up in years, who knows how many effective years he has left). He is a primary reason the Birds have had primetime games almost every other week which is making the Eagles Brass bank. There is no way hell the Eagles dont sign him.

Eagles4ever…the talent you speak of in Avant can easily be found in backup receivers all over the league. When you have lighting fast guys on the outside you need that big presence in the slot and Avant doesn’t give you that.

Ok, I would take either of these guys right now over Avant as a better 3rd receiver…

Mario Manningham
Steve Beaston/Early Doucet
Jordy Nelson/James Jones
Earl Bennett
L. Moore/Henderson/Meachem(all of them work the slot btr than Avant)
Jacoby Jones
Austin Collie
Roy Williams….

Thats about a dozen right there and I didnt even go through half of the league.

My point wasn’t too bash Avant’s magnificant abilities that he displays on the field for us to see sunday after sunday. It was to argue against the point that people on here actually are willing to trade D-Jax, who is probably the best player on the team right now, for a guy that has a bigger body. Instead people should just realize how about the Eagles just compliment D-Jax with a legit threat in the slot who has size. I stated I would of loved to see the birds select Greg Little in the draft who I think might be just as good as those 1st round guys. Obviously, they can’t do that now. So I would rather have a different guy play the slot than the overrated guy we have now.

stevo.. Sorry I never played clue before.. Im more of a monopoly guy. No one has ever questioned what he means to this team? im only questioning is he ranked up there with fitzgerald and andre johnson? if you know football you’d be an idiot to say yes. Desean is on the same level as Marcus Colston or a Roddy White. Elite yes but HOF material? as of now no.

I see Jax best used as a 35-40 Plays/Snaps a game type of player.. Get the ball in to his hands 6-8-10 times a games on som deep passes, deep outs, reverses and of course the return game
I would not have him on the field once inside the Red-Zone or in in short-yardagae situaitions ..

@Paulman I agree

Put in Avant, Maclin, and that bad ass white boy R Cooper to do some damage in the redzone. Did we even draft a big WR in this years draft? I don’t think so..? Alot of people don’t realize and mention that that is also one of our big missing pieces on Offense..not just the oline. Look for rookie Dion Lewis to do work this year on 3rd and short and in the redzone. He’s my favorite pick this year for some reason. I have a feeling he might be better than our beloved Mccoy one day. 😛

CT,
How about Chad Hall, where does he fit into the big picture..

@Paulman

Hopefully he does’nt fit in anywhere. Just wasting a roster spot for all I can see. Too small and not quick enough. Sorry everyone, Chad Hall is not the Wes Welker we all that we had when we first got him.

Chad Hall is not even a Danny Amendola who had some hops…
Maybe this RB D Lewis from PItt can do play various positions and handle differnet roles and be able to take replace both C Hall and E Buckley spots on the Roster which would “free up” another Roster Spot for another position..

Vrich- i hear ya but on THIS team he is worth every penny. If we were a team that was built, starting with the Dline and on O focused on the run game then you would be correct-Djack would not be woth that kind of money BUT- we are built with the QB being first…. deep bombs are what we do and he is not only one of the top % for that kind of O but perhaps top 3. He fits what WE do better than any other player out there. Plus…. he is a team player, says the right things and is a leader. when talking about players… dont just think about what players sell the most “fat heads” or has the coolest hair. Think about who fits us best.

Good points Stevo and there is no doubt that D-Jax Special SKills fir this Eagle Offense perfectly, The key is can he take the Ponding at his szie week after week, season after season.. I am not sure his body will hold up in 3 years time if he is out there for every snap.. Again I think he’s would be better utilzed with about 35-40 Snaps from Scrimmage and not every play (60-65 Snaps from scrimmage), It’s nice that he can decoy, but all the other WR’s are talented and have to make plays too.. Hearing how D-JAx is such a great decoy and pulls defenders with him all the time, then why aren’t the others making plays all the time then, If this was the case, then the Eagles offense should never be stopped and talking about Punt Returns,How many did he actually failed and run with last year.. Again the fear of injury has him as a part-time returner and not the weapon being utilized as it should/could be..
Bottom line to me, a truly dynamic player whose highly productive shelf-life will probably not exceed 5-6 NFL Seasons before injuries set him back
Do I want to committ $50-$75 Million while he plays for 3-5 Years
I wouldn’t if it were my $$$$ anf could have 3 Different players assume the 2-3 roles that he excells in..(The Deep Route and the Punt return)

its a fair q pman- i hope they take the chance though. Im fine with him hitting the deck after a big catch and before getting killed. He should not be running screens and crossing routes (should only do that in my madden game).

I really dont get the money issue guys- every year we talk about how the birds should pay top dollar to bring someone in and now you dont want to pay the guy we have? It makes no sence. Pman- i mean no disrespect but this is just one of those times that you want to sound smart.

As far as that money could go to 3 other players….. BUT THOSE PLAYERS DONT DO WHAT HE DOES!!! we have tried MANY players at that spot-fred x and so on and it has not worked. And believe me- giving him an extra few million is not going to kill the rest of our team. Lets talk about the spots we need help at and leave our strengths be.

Stevo – agreed. Especially to your last point – I can’t believe people are talking about Chad Hall. Our WR spot is fine, and they’re going to resign DJax. And he won’t hold out. Now defense… Oline….there’s stuff to talk about

That’s my poin t Stevo,
If D-Jax doesn’t run the Bubble Screens,Quick Slants,Crossing Routes, Reverses and increases his Fair Catches on Punt Returns and to limit his exposure to big hits, then what is he going to do, simply run nothing but Deep ROutes or the Deep Crossing and or Double moves and Up ..
Don’t you think the other Teams Defense’s and DC’s will catch up on to this.. He looses his “threat” of Big Play Ability if he isn’t running all routes and would then become too predictable to defend and therefore loose his effectivenes and not be anywhere worthy of a #1 WR..
