Report: Arizona Cardinals Would Give Up 2-Second-Round Picks For Kevin Kolb

Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb isn’t the first quality backup quarterback for Michael Vick, who was valued by other teams in the NFL. Four years ago in 2007, the Houston Texans acquired Vick’s backup, Matt Schaub, from the Atlanta Falcons for two-second-round draft picks.

Kent Somers of AZCentral.com of the Arizona Republic, who covers the Arizona Cardinals says the Cardinals would be interested in making a similar kind of deal with the Eagles for Kolb. Somers has good sources inside the Cardinals organization and I think he’s doing them a favor by floating the two-second-round offer to the Birds. It’s a way of negotiating with the Eagles despite the fact that they can’t negotiate because of the lockout.

Of course the Eagles have been talking about getting at least a first-round pick for Kolb, but I think they would settle for two-second-round picks for Kolb because they could address to areas of need with those picks. We all know the Birds love second-round picks because if you make a mistake, it doesn’t cost as much when it comes to bonus money.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, they won’t have as much of a leverage advantage when the NFL eventually allows them to trade Kolb. Quite a few teams which would have been in the bidding for Kolb’s services have at least temporarily solved their quarterbacks needs through the draft.

not worth it??? take it and run dont get greedy bc frankly, Kolb is not that good. Very easy to sign a vet to be a backup behind Vick who is just as productive as Kolb.

vrich – drop the crack piep – step back from the keyboard –

reality check. Every year how many QBs get drafted in the NFL – in the first round – how many go on to do anything in the NFL? Look at Russel, Clausen, Leinhart, and how many other ‘future franchise’ QBs just tank miserably – AFTER they signed huge bonus check and fat multy year contracts. Kolb has proven on several occasions that he is a pro caliber QB – so – your a GM – you have a shot at a college hotshot – or…. you can take a guy that has been in the pros for a few years, been thorugh some camps, and played in some games that he was the offensive player of the week…

And Kolb is going to be a very good NFL QB – no doubt.

But If I drafted a guy #2 and a couple years later I could get 2 #2s – I’d take it. Kolb clearly wont be happy being a back up, sign a veteran (love Jeff GArcia) and see what Kafka can do.

Id say try for a first and 2nd, but this is a great deal too. The fact that we would be getting more for Kolb than Mcnabb is just ridiculous and you have to pounce on it.

If trades could have happened prior to the draft and this offer had come before the draft I’d say absolutely accept it. Because they could get immediate impact from the 2nd round pick this year. But since the draft is over, I feel a team will be more likely to fork over a 1st round pick for a future draft to get the immediate impact of Kolb. If New England could get a 1st round pick for a 30 year old DL there is no reason Philly can’t get a 1st for a potential franchise quarterback. Especially considering some of the qbs 1st round picks were used on this year.

vr – draft value boards equate 2 2nd rounder to a 1rst rounder. In fact, if the first round pick is high enough, two 2nd round picks (depending also on where THEY are) could be worth more than a first round pick.

It’s Patrick Peterson or nothing at all….. I would like to have Dockett as part of the deal but he’s another undersided DL and I like the play of Dixon…… I’ll say give Kolb up and a 3rd round pick for Peterson and 2nd round pick……. But Arizona cant’t be that stupid….. But than again they love picking up the Eagles Scraps!

2 second round picks sounds good and all….. But I want something that is going to work out now……. we all know the Eagles love to draft…… And they could do something next season but now is the time!!!!!

He has to be moved. HAS TO. for these reasons;

1) he doesnt want to be here.
2) Gunna walk out the door next year- his stock is at its highest.
3) He’s really not that good for this O (his arm is weak… we bomb it out).

I would do this….. get the best offer for him…. try and get a starting CB as part of the deal…. if that wont work… take the 2#2’s.

You heard it here first- he will come back to us in like 5 years as our backup.

Two second round picks, maybe even a 2nd and 3rd I’d take…if you’re a GM or a fan of course push for the highest you can get… but Kolb has proven to be worth a 1st round pick on occasions and worth a lone 4th round pick at times – maybe even less than that

if you get two picks for Kolb, to me that is better than a 1st round pick…2 picks = improve odds of player production…we see 1st round picks every season, that end up being “ass” – When its all said and done, the Eagles will have to take what they can get for Kolb, or risk not getting nothing at all …Extra picks could be bargaining chips with other teams to trade up in future NFL drafts..or acquiring a player via trade…

Noway! If they take 2 second rounders for Kolb they are dumb. We traded out of the first for Kolb. I want Cromartie and a 2nd or Peterson straight up. Either way we let the league look at all of the shitty qb’s they drafted.

Take it and run like thieves in the night. Any 2nd round pick from Arizona is likely to be early in the round. Kolb isn’t that good and he won’t improve the Cards to lessen those picks. Take it and RUN Andy RUN!

schiller everyone in philly is down on kolb except me. i love kolb and what he can do. I look at it more of losing value. He was drafted 36 over all which is a very high 2nd round pick so 4 years later you groom him just to give him away for another 2nd round pick? which could be lower than 36 where he was drafted? also the other 2nd round pick could be for a conditional 2012 selection it does not mean you will get 2 picks in 2011. I say no deal.

A team drafts a QB in the 1st round – no experience – doesn’t know the playbook – doesn’t know the league, the coverages, the speed of the game. Most fail. Only about 1 in 4 make it as average NFL QBs. Yet a team pays millions of dollars in guaranteed money. If the rookie fails, the franchise is set back 5 years. Doomed to football purgatory. Now a player like Kolb comes along, learns the game, has a few 300 yard games, dominates one of the best teams in the league (ATL), and is named Offensive player of the week. At 27, his upside in the right system is terrific. And yet, some of the younger fans, think paying a number 1 draft choice is too much. My guess is If it was their career (as a GM) on the line, they might give up more than a number 1 to avoid purgatory.

With a lot of temas out of the market for needing a QB, if they get an offer of 2 #2nd Round Picks, or a Starter (Cromartie) and a #2 Pick I would take it …
If the Lockout ends, maybe they can wait to summer if canse a team has a QB that gets injured where they may neen a QB nad be willing to give up a #1 Rounder.. I dion’t see that happening s

I just heard thru a Phoenix source of mine that CArdinals and Redskins are making a tradeonce Lockout is lifted

*****Cardinals receive QB D McNabb and DT A Haynesworth from Redksins for CB P Petersen and a 2nd Round & 5th Round pick in 2012 Draft******

The positive is that maybe the Eagles can sign CB Asmogoah since the Redskins won’t be in a bidding war for him any longer

Sure, give the keys to the franchise to a convicted criminal who is one traffic sop away from being banished from the NFL. Although I believe in second chances, I wouldn’t jeopardise the huge strides this organization has made during the Andy Reid era. Knowing the reputation Andy Reid has for evaluating and coaching QB’s, we as fans shouldn’t be so eager for a Kevin Kolb trade to materialise. If the shooting at Mike Vicks gathering wasn’t a wake-up call I don’t know what is. So with the various legal and durability issues surrounding Vick, maybe it’s not such a good Idea to trade Kevin Kolb. After all, one of the best QB minded coaches in the NFL traded hid franchise QB so Kolb could be the starter.

If you’re gonna look at the players upside look at the downside as well…yes Kolb had a few great games (to say he dominated the Falcons is a bit much)

I recall our defense setting the tone that game, holding the falcons to 17! Our Eagles D? That was one of the best defensive games they played in 2010, they dominated the game, Kolb played great! However, the Titans game, the Packers game, the 49ers game? Kolb was not brilliant in those games, if you only seen him play in those games, how much would he be worth to you then?…

If you take his upside and his downside and average it out, its nothing but mediocrity….2 picks, 1 in 2011, 1 in 2012 is still worth more than Kolb right now…

what did we trade McNabb for? A 2nd round pick in last years draft and 4th round pick in this years draft…What has Kolb done to prove he is worth more than McNabb? Not a thing, fellas!

Some of you just are ridicolous, any GM would go for the highest they can get, but at some point reality will set in and they will take what they can get…

settle down with the “dominated ATL” thing- he had a very good game and they actually used the run. The birds won that game because it was the prolly the best coached game of AR’s career. Amazing what can happen when you use all pieces of the game of football instead of just the deep bomb.

johhn q- i understand where your coming from but you need to understand that Kevin Kolb is not going to be the qb of the philly eagles. you HAVE to start vick next year and… after next year Kolb is gone. He should have a chance to start and there is no way that chance is here.

I feel i need to remind everyone that Kolb is not a solid backup. He’s a young QB who could become very good. Those arent the things you are looking for as a backup. Does anyone here really feel like if Vick went down that Kolb would be the best fit for us to move forward for a few games? Over a Mark Bulger? Or a hasselback? or over even an older Jeff Garcia? I dont. What makes kolb attractive is his potential…. not his polished skills. Ill take a seasoned vet over this guy anyday.

Stevo, I wasn’t implying that I wanted Kolb here because he’s a solid backup. He is under cotract for one more year weather he wants to be a starter or not. If we keep him for one more year we still have the option to franchise him after the season to acquire compensation for him. Same thing applies to Mike Vick. Yes Vick is the starter and the future franchise QB assuming he keeps his nose clean and he doesn’t miss another 3-4 games due to injury. If he proves he is worth a long term deal he get’s an extension. If not Kolb is our “Young QB who could become very good” at no extra cost!

May 13, 2011 7:30 pm

ok johnny, ill run with it- so you keep kolb this year and either pay him top 5 money (Tagged) after not playing yet another year and hope that after he signs that tender that a team will trade a first rounder for him and pay him all that money AND have that team try and work out a long term deal with him for him (after not playing yet another year).

or

Vick goes down and Kolb comes in and tries to run a deep bomb kind of O when he doesnt have that kind of arm and at the end of the year we pay him top 5 money OR… he plays like crap, walks and we get nothing for him.

hmmmm- ill take the 2 2nd rounders or better yet- a starting CB.

I’m just very sceptical about Vick based on his history and reckless style of play. The electrifying play that Mike Vick brings to the table has tremendous upside and in return is a major liability. NFL teams spend a fortune on the tackle position to protect their FRANCHISE from the very same violent hits that Mike Vick is exposed to more often than any other QB in the NFL. The simple fact is, QB’s aren’t built to withstand the punishment that Mike Vick endures week in and week out. In addition he’s smaller than the your avg QB and has reached the magic age of 30. Although that would be the prime for most QB’s, that’s not the case with Vick. His recovery time will increase and speed will decrease. A long term deal with him is just too scary for me based on all the facts we’ve discussed. Keep Kolb for the year with the idea you can franchise him to acquire compensation. If Vick doesn’t have a lights out season we still have Kolb as an insurance policy for the long term of the franchise if we elect to resign him.

1. In 2004, there were two men arrested for distributing marijuana with Michael Vick’s truck. The incident allowed Dan Reeve to lecture him about being a reflection of the team. It was also reported in that year that a watch had been taken from Alvin Spencer during a security check at the Hartsfield International airport. 2. Criminal charges were brought up against him by Sonya Elliott, claiming that he gave her genital herpes in the autumn of 2002. He was aware of his condition and the case was settled outside for an undisclosed amount. 3. In 2006, it was found out that Vick was paying taxes for the state of Illinois instead of Georgia or Virginia. 4. In that same week, he was fined $10,000 by the NFL and donated $10,000 to a charity as a consequence of obscene gestures made on the field towards fans. 5. In January of 2007 one of the final criminal activities he participated in was attempting to take water bottle through the Miami International Airport security that had a hidden compartment, a police report states, “The concealed compartment contained a small amount of dark particulate and pungent aroma closely associated with Marijuana. 6. In August 2007, he plead guilty to federal level charges of running an unlawful interstate dog fighting ring. He is also being sentenced on the case brought by the Virginia Grand Jury for animal beatings & killings, in addition to the dog fighting charges. He then tested positive on September 13 for marijuana use.

JohnnyQ76
May 14, 2011 11:35 am

Let me guess… he didn’t know his vehicle was beeing used in trafficking illegal drugs. Or the secret container had something other than marijuana in it. Or maybe someone tried to set him up by falsifying the drug test results… No wait he ate too many poppy seeds which gave a false reading. Hmm, it wasn’t tax evasion. Oh stop it’s okay for athletes to knowledgeably spread sexually transmitted diseases. Now let’s not forget to embrace him and pat him on the back and tell him that he deserves another chance after killing countless dogs by drowning and electricuting them. The insane part of it is that some dogs were actually family pets. Everyone deserves a second chance but this not the first second or third time he’s done something illegal and classles. So no, I don’t feel comfortable signing someone to a long term deal after a short recovery period with no insurance policy for the future of the franchise. Although I believe in second chances I won’t let one year of extraordinary play dictate the next 5 years in a QB driven league. As much as people tend to think franchise QB’s grow on trees, they don’t. So it’s obvious that Andy Reid thinks Kolb is a franchise QB or McNabb will still be here playing for the Eagles. So don’t jump the gun by trading Kolb. We don’t know how sincere someone is when the millions of dollars he lost are what’s the very same fuel driving him to succeed. A lifetime of wrong doings and classles causes me and many others to be sceptical.

G:
Crack pipe?! First sentence? Never mind…
G, I don’t like that deal at all. It’s not terrible, but I think that the first instinct for the Birds should be a 1st rounder and a very good player. The latter meaning some one to help them this year. Again, the Birds should not be thinking fire sale here. During the season Kolb’s value may go up!
