Andy Reid On Eagles Free Agent Plan: “It’s A Good, Aggressive Plan”

Eagles head coach Andy Reid, new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and special teams coach Bobby April got the chance to talk to some players yesterday but they weren’t talking to Eagles, they were talking to local high school football players, who will be competing in this Saturday’s City All Star Classic at Lincoln Financial Field.

Reid gave the youngsters a pep talk and told them to “fear nothing and attack everything” both in their football careers and in their life outside of football. As you would expect the youngsters were excited to be talked to by the Eagles head coach and to get the chance to workout at the Nova Care Complex.

After speaking to the youngsters Reid did get the chance to make some comments to the assembled media about the lockout and he gave Eagles fans reasons to dream when he talked about free agency.

“Howie [Roseman] and I got the plan together,” Reid said when talking about the team’s free agency plans. “It’s a good, aggressive plan. When they say go, we’re ready to go. It’s just a matter of that time coming forward.”

One would think that a good, aggressive plan would include a quality cornerback, but at this point nobody knows because that’s as far as Reid would go in his description of their free agent plans.

Big Red says he and his coaching staff are currently working on their plans for training camp. He says they’ll be ready to prepare the team to play football regardless of when the work stoppage ends.

“If it happens Day 1, that’s great,” Reid said. “We got a plan for that. If it happens a couple of weeks into camp we got that taken care of. If it happens right before the first game we got that taken care of. Anything else we don’t need camp.”

The disappointing thing about this situation is that it seems that there’s a good chance there won’t be any training camp. In fact it appears, that we’ll be fortunate to see a 16-game season.

As expected, we can see the Reid and his staff are ready and waiting for the day to come.

I wonder if the Eagles are going to pursue QB B Farve (Coach AR has always loved that Guy) and maybe WR Randy Moss.. Good Grief..

If they both had ACL surgery recently it’d be a definite move Paulmeister..Just kidding..I loved the Eagles draft btw..Danny is the new Runyan, maybe…different pos but same attitude..that much talent with a solid line gives me shivers…

The off-season is still incomplete. They have money, so let’s see what they will do. I think that it is pretty clear that they are going to sign or trade for a CB. If that guy is Asomawosownshw(sp?), Joseph or Rodgers-Cromartie then I am ok with that. Kolb is still a good chip to play, but I am hoping that they get a player instead of just picks.

What does everyone think of Laron Landry?

Safety Leron Landry was having a Pro-Bowl Season last year and then was injured and missed the last 4-6 weeks.. A very good Strong Safety and solid versus the run, a little suseptible in pass coverage.. but he’s under contract with the Redskins
I think you mean Dwan Landry from the Ravens who I think is one of the most underrated Safeties in the NFL and get’s overlooked since he plays with Ed Reed.. I look for the Cowboys to pursue to him big time.. I think with the Eagles Drafting 2 Safeties in the 2nd Round of the last 2 Drafts (Jarrett & Allen) they likliehood that they will pursue another one thru Free-Agency (whenever it arrives) is very unlikely.. But he’s a very good player who is in his prime right now and wil contend for Pro-Bowls the next 4-5-6 years

You are right Pman. Thanks. That is what I get trying to sneak in a comment before a meeting. Unfortunately, you are probably right about the safeties too even drafting a guy in his prime to let these 2 come into their own seems to be the smart move to me. I really like the Raven’s Landry and think that he would be a crowd favorite here.

Yes he would and he will be a good pick-up for whover gets him and maybe the Ravens re-sign him since Ed Reed can’t play forever…
I think the Eagles will pursue CB/DE in Free-Agency as their Primary needs and maybe a OLB or a TE if they see someone they really like ..

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Reids definition of “Aggressive” means. Nhamdi Aso I hope is what is going through his mind. Please Andy we deserve this and so do you. If we have Samuel and Aso on the same field we won’t even need elite safetys, just solid ones that can do their job (Mikell). Our 2 corners will have everything on lockdown, and I see our pass rush being way more effective this season with everyone maturing a little more and Jim Washburn doing work,

Not a lot of DE’s out there in FDree-agency to help the Eagles

DE C Jenkins (Packers) is better suited for a 3-4 scheme
DE R Edwards (Vikings) is a good one for a 4-3 and will command a big contract
DE C Johnson (Panthers) is a under the radar player and would fit in nice int he Eagle Scheme

OLB – B Leber (Vikings) excellent size and strength, great in pass coverage
OLB – B Rudd (TB Bucs) great insticnts, tough and good feet who runs well
OLB – J Anderson (Panthers) great athlete whoe plays the run and pass well

CB – C Rogers (Redskins) Great size and especially in the Red-Zone,
doesn’t have great hands but plays well versus the run and knows the NFC East teams very well having played for the Redskins the last 4-5 Seasons..
CB – J Joseph (Bengals) Good size and a excellent cover guy with good hands

TE _ Donald Lee (Packers) – Good size and blocker and effective in the Red-Zone, (The Packers released him just before the lockout went into effect since they are so deep at TE with younger, more athletic players)

I think the Eagles are still looking at the Offensive line as a need to address in free agency along with corner. Not alot of big names out there on the Oline but there are guys out there at C & OT that would be upgrades for this team. I don’t see the Eagles going out and paying a free agent DE that is looking for a payday. They traded for Darryl Tapp and drafted 3 DE’s last season to go along with Trent Cole and Juqua Parker.

Here are some players I could see the Eagles targeting for the right price.

Ryan Harris, OT, Broncos
Jared Gaither, OT, Ravens If he’s healthy

Kyle Cook (RFA), C, Bengals
Samson Satele, C, Raiders

I don’t see the Eagles paying 30 yr old Nnamdi Asomugha but I would love to see him in Eagles green. Here are some others that make sense for Philly.
Johnathan Joseph, CB
Richard Marshall, CB, Panthers
Eric Wright, CB, Browns

Manny Lawson, OLB
Thomas Howard, OLB

i like joseph the most out of those guys. I might be the minority, but the lack of a preseason and training camp scares me, the birds seem to have a hard time getting in a groove, which usually happens in a pass majority offense with timing and such. However, could it be a huge boost with the undersized defense not tiring out as fast due to a shorter season? Id love to see a big time corner, at least 1 de and dt, im not so sure about edwards, seems a little overrated, i could be wrong but i dont think he’d be worth the excessive contract, wouldn’t mind seeing babin back, i always loved the guy, check my posts 2 years ago, great motor kid, not too expensive i would think. Maybe haynesworth with an incentive based contract, and dl coach that could possibly handle him. As long as there was a way to dump him at the first sign of bein a “knucklehead” as sir charles would say.

like the thoughts on the possible pickups. i really think joseph could be a target for the birds, also would love rudd in an eagle uniform.

another thought… not sure but would vick be an advatage if the lockout lasted into august for the fact he can run on broken plays? having vick in place and letting him run could buy a little time for the team to develop and learn the offense/defense. in the same breath i think kolb (or another veteran qb) would need to be here to jump in and play around games 5 through 9.

I think one of our biggest problems is stopping tight ends. I think we should pick up nmandi and a good LB rather than a DE. Even if we get nmandi, teams can still throw down the middle. Also nmandi is shutdown, but not asante. Asante is a great corner but i dont think is a shutdown corner like revis, nmandi, or woodson. And i like the donald lee idea. Celek is the only TE that does anything on this team.

Nmadi & C. Johnson works for me. Would have loved Mankins, but he was Franchised before the lockout. Wouldn’t a line of Peters, Mankins, McGlynn, Watkins, Herrimans look sweet for the next 3-5 or so years.
