The thought of the Eagles adding a big wide receiver like Plaxico Burress to their offense has quite a few Eagles fans beginning an ovation, but I don’t know if the receivers who are already on the squad are clapping along. Right away you can believe that DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are texting each other and talking about the rumor that Burress might be joining the team. It’s going to affect them one way or the other.
What if anything will the Eagles signing of Burress mean for Jackson, who is the team’s home run threat? You know a big receiver like Burress would fit in well in the west coast offense, so he’s going to take receptions from the other receivers, especially first downs and touchdowns.
Just like the case with Michael Vick, Andy Reid has probably been fantasizing about having Burress on his roster and available for use in the red zone. The Eagles have struggled for years down there because they’ve never had that big physical receiver, who could dominate if left one-on-one.
He would immediately be the number one target near the end zone because there are few defensive backs in the NFL who are big enough to deal with his size. I hear he has lost some weight during his incarceration and will need to get his size and strength back in order to be the dominant receiver he was a few years ago.
That’s going to mean less touchdown passes for Jackson, Maclin, Jason Avant and Brent Celek. The team would improve immediately in the red zone, but Burress will be a great target over the middle on third downs. He and Eli Manning developed a good working relationship and they’re a big reason that team won the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots.
Remember also that Jackson is trying to finally get an extension of his first contract. I wonder if the Eagles would bring up Burress’ presence on the roster in their conversations with Jackson’s agent Drew Rosenhaus.
It shouldn’t make a difference because Burress would definitely not a long-term solution, but I can tell you that all kinds of things run through the minds of players, especially players who are trying to get a long-term contract.
They aint signing him. Eagles will sign hank baskett again and talk about how much he’s worked in the offseason and improved his ability and how he will be their red zone target again for the millionth time.
We dont need this guy at all. We have 2 top notch receivers and Avant is great for over the middle and 3rd down. We need a pass rushing DE , a BIG DT and secondary help. The D stunk last year that where we should be improving.
\
Hopefully it would mean the end of Chad Hall.. A nice story but I am sorry, he does not belong on a NFL Field on Sundays..
As far as where Burress fits.. He would be a #3/#4 WR and predominately get his chances down in the Red-Zone where the smaller D-Jax is ineffective
I don’t think Burress is a work in the middle of the field/short to intermediate routs type of Receiver, He is at his best working the Sidelines/End Zone in one on one match up where he can utilize his size and strength..He would definitely take some balls away from D-Jax/Maclin so it’s a little bit of a risk to bring him in the Eagles Locker room but I am sure Vick would love a reliable big target in the Red-Zone
The question is who will get this offense off the field if we get a 70% plex……. This wont affect this Eagle’s team what so ever…….. We all know what D-Jax can do with 40 catches……… Avant will be at his usual 35 catches for 500+ yards or so…… And Maclin with perhaps 60-65 grabs close to 1000 yards if not 1000,,,,,, Plex can get atleast the key catches……… Jump ball situations…….. 3rd and long grabs that can get us in good positions to get tds…….. Use him in the redzone on fade routes……..
“we don’t need this guy” why do you care? its not your money, let them spend it finally. all of it. go for broke. go for the whole thing
He’s a great run blocker who can use his size for advantage….. Play-action pass would be a big advantage……….. That means more 1-on-1 for D-Jax……..
can then Trade D-Jax for some Defense Help and keep C Hall and convert to RB so the Eagles can trade McCoy for more Defensive help..
To Jroc757
Not to be a smart ass, but the Eagles don’t run the ball so they don’t need his blocking skills and since they don’t run the ball much, theire Play action playes do not fool anyone.. Eagles Offense (even with Vick) is one of the Leagues easiest to defend and scheme against.. All you have to do is get after the QB.. The teams that do, beat the Eagles consistently like the Packers,Bears,& Vikings.. If I am a Defensive Coordinaton I will take my chances that McCoy won’t get more than 15 Touches and I am coming after VIck’s ass with the kitchen sink and everyone else.. ,
Sign him – maybe that fade route to the corner of the end zone they’ve been trying to perfect with Hank Baskett for half of my life just might work.
@Paulman……. What up Paul…… I feel your point…… Maybe and if maybe AR could make atleast the effort to make this atleast a 60/40 scheme……. Thats only if…… With a new look offensive line and coaching staff….. Perhaps AR could make a run attack on any given sunday….. We all know the eagles play-action even without a solid run game……. What AR needs to do is analyze what’s been working and what hasn’t…….. Execute on plays that mean something such as how the steelers score on key drives that determine games……… And make sure they stay consistant week after week……… This passing on just about every play has to end…….. Giving your best runner the ball 15 times a game isn’t going to cut it……. AR now has weapons on offense to take him to the next level……. The question is…… Is AR ready to EAT……. WHich we all know he loves to do…… But you get what I mean Though…….
@Paulman……. Guys like SHILLER……. Who seem to be alright with Andy’s way of thought seems just fine to him……. I give Andy a ton of credit……. But some of his flaws are very elementary…… They say some geniuses dont have common sense……. I see that with AR……. He knows his stuff within football but his scheming and clock control skills just makes you wonder at times…… Plex on this team would get the Eagles over the curse perhaps……. He killed Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard and made Eli Manning a better Qb…….. GET HIM…….
People who dont want him are crazy… hes going to be mad cheap, a huge threat, and if he isnt any good, they just cut him. There is no risk at all here. they get a humble hungry 6’6″ reciever, who will be ready to beast his way to the SB. Or at least get a camp body to dispose of on final cuts. Hes quiet, nondisruptive, and a new father with a lot to proove. His run blocking will work the screen game btw, not just on rushes
Just bustin Jroc757,
I would like see the Eagles give a long look at Burress for he could help this team in the Red Zone, Short-yardage and keep him away from other Competitors.. and if Maclin/D-Jax were to get hurt or a D-Jax Hold-Out, Plex would be a good WR to have to add big play capability and depth to the Receiving Corps which is unproven after D-Jax/MAclin/Avant…
@Paulman…… That is so so true…. We have to look at the injury options as well……. I dont want the eagles to lose Maclin and they sign Hank Baskett to be a guy to fill in on the roster…….. Everyone is still on cars and trucks……. The eagles need to be on Planes and Boats…….. Start spending to get better quality…… No more of this Great Value walmart non-sense….. I want some Real Welch’s grape……. not grape drink with perservitives and sugar/high fructose corn syrup…….. We need longevity…… I want a dynasty in the making………. CAN I GET A HOT TUB!!!!!!!
@Stopgoat…. You are correct bro…… Plex can do a lot…….. He’s physical and he’s hungry….. ANd Vick is the fuel that he needs to make him get back into shape…….. It all makes since…… We get him Namdi and perhaps Haynesworth…….. Namdi would be a decent contract perhaps a 5 year deal, Vick’s soon to come and D-Jax is due for a contract…… Thats it…….. Stew Bradley wasn’t that much of a miss when he was gone and Chaney carried the MLB position pretty well…….. We have 5 good solid young Boys who can play the LB position under rookie contracts….. Chaney, Foukou, Clayton, Mathews, and Rolle……. Under Mike Caldwell who is going to have the time of his life coaching guys of this calibur……. I see this being a good season perhaps……. The Eagles need to spend…….
Haynesworth would love to come to philly under Washburn……And would take a pay cut as well……. We sign him to a 2 year deal because he’s been out for about 2 years now…….. The jersey sales would even out his contract the same as Namdi……. And the Plex jersey’s would sell like hot cakes at IHOP as well….. The same with Vick when he became an Eagle…… It’s a win win situation for the Eagles franchise and more money in there pocket as well……… More brains can make you more wealthy…….. These are guys who can take the eagles to the next level!!!!
Where do the Eagles lose in this deal………. They end up making more than losing…… Q. Mickell is done for……. Stew Bradley?????//// David Akers is done for…….. Akeem Jordan is gone……. V. Abimiari is gone…….. Was still under a rookie contract…….. Omar gaither gone……. and etc……. A lot of these guys for philly are still young and are under rookie deals…… WE CANT LOSE!!!!!!
Haynesworth Pimped the Redskins organization….. So he’s straight off of the signing bonus money……. Plex doesn’t want to be on the Giants because him and Coughlin didnt get along pretty well……. Cowboys is just another team to land him in jail……. To much going on in Dallas…… Cocaine perhaps……. Michael Irvin…….. WE know the story…… Celebrity life style there in Dallas would ruin a guy like him…….. Eagles please make it happen…… The Philly’s did what it takes to win a championship……. Why can the Eagles follow suit!!!!
Bottom line at least i hear the eagles liked to names, to me it looks like there trying to get a superbowl title. And thats all i can ask for. Bring in the players that will help you get there. And if you cant then its the scheme. Andy still dosent run the ball enough. Im not quite sure how that would affect the team but if they did get him i think they would use him like they did vick, situational. So i dont think it would take to much away from the other guys. Speaking of recivers……………YO G wheres that top ten recivers article??? Because i just watched top 100 players of 2011 and i was absolutley STUNNED that miles austin got a higher ranking then greg jennings………you have to be kidding me.
To dawkplex1221
I believe it’s Contributor Haran Knight with the Top 10 lists..
I think G is on vacation in Hawaii until the lockout is lifted..
A Couple of DT’s that could be good fits in Philly
#1) DT Barry Cofield from the Giants is a Free-agent and with the Giants Drafting DT Austin with a 2nd Round pick, they probably don’t have any interest in re-signing Cofield..
#2) DT Brandon Mebane from Seattle.. another high motort player who can actually rush the passer and get into the backfield.. I would expect that he could thrive playing under DL Coach Washburn and still is in his prime..
It should just be the best 100 players.Sure you can rank certain guys over otheres but once you get past 25 its pointless. If a team values pass rushers more then run stoppers then those guys rank players different.
Miles Austin is a nice reciever but Gregg Jennings is a monster among boogie men.
Trent Cole ahead of Jared Allen.
Eagles that have to be on the list.
Sante..savy…picks speak for themselves
Dsnacks…tope 2 deep threats in a passing league and dont forget about return threats…ehhGiants
Mccoy..one of best all-around backs in the league…i dont care how long he’s been in league.
Vick-no brainer
I think it would be worth a try. If the Eagles are pre-emptive and let the prime receivers know then it would not hurt the WR core ego. This move would give us a depth and demension at the WR that we see in the Packers, Saints and Patriots. Teams where you can’t be sure what WR to match up heavy on.
A few less Recps might make Djax better. A three WR set of any combination of DJax, MacLin, Burress, and Avant would make defensing McCoy much more difficult, thus we can keep our same run numbers but be more devastating when we do run, which in turn makes teams more scared and opens the pass game more…it would become a vicous cycle of poision chosing.
And like someone else said already it shouldn’t cost much (But there might be a potential run on this guy that could make his price go up if teams see the potential in taking a risk like the Eagles did Vick), he is worth going for at a lower cost and years contract, at a higher price he will disturb the working of the machine.
We need our money for Vick, Jax, FA studs on defense, and rounding out other contracts with our own role players.
As always LONG LIVE THE EAGLES
Burress underneath will open it up for DJAX and MAC…. Celek was supposed to do that last year, but struggled getting open.
DJAX and MAC struggled in the red zone against press coverage….Burress gives the Eagles a legit red zone threat that they lack.
Maybe we can get Bernie Madoff as CFO for the Eagles.
Burress shot himself, I dont think he should have went to jail in the first place…ill take him ..he’s an idiot, but he can be our idiot
LMBO! Bernie Madoff! Classic. All jokes aside, right now we need to concentrate any & all signings on a CB & the D- front 7. Another wide out is just extra whipped cream on top of your ice cream. Keeping my fingers crossed for Nmadi Asomugha, C. Johnson from Panthers & Poslutzny. (forgive my spelling).
I Just hoping the Eagles “aggressive free agency plan” does not include another Marlin Jackson stiff on wheels like signing of seasons before.
It would remind the other receivers to holster their guns properly when going out on the town.
