Is Holding Out The Best Way For Jackson To Get His Money?

With fans and players from Lehigh to Tucson coming out of their mid-summer football hiatus and hardly able to contain their excitement, Desean Jackson sits at home biding his time. Currently a no-show at Eagles training camp, Jackson has left the Eagles and his teammates in dark. Eagles quarterback Mike Vick has no idea whether Jackson will show up at all.

The reasons are simple enough. Jackson wants a raise from the $550,000 dollars he will be making in the final year of his rookie contract. The man prodding him is the same man who sent Terrell Owens to a driveway for sit-ups six years ago; money-hungry super agent Drew Rosenhaus. Jackson is a big-time player with big-time ability and even your 90-year-old grandma can tell you that his current contract is vastly under-paying him.

But what, may I ask, does he plan on accomplishing by holding out?

While Jackson is dreaming of $20 million in guaranteed money as the drama unfolds in Lehigh, he actually could stand to lose money by holding out, especially if the Eagles balk at his demands. According to early reports on the new collective bargaining agreement, a player may lose some of their signing bonus if they miss six or more days of training camp.

Then if the holdout reaches a T.O. level of hysteria he will face fines from the Eagles front office. Fines and subtractions are not going to force Jackson to work pro-bono but when money is the issue at hand I’m sure D-Jack does not want to lose any more of his minimal contract.

With a frenzy of free agent signings and trades sure to come in this diminutive signing period, the Eagles hands will be hog-tied looking to improve at cornerback and defensive-line. The Birds are well aware of Jackson’s contract demands—he has been quite vocal about what he wants for over a year now—but there is nothing they can do until they figure out what additions they will make and how close they will be to the salary cap.

Holding out does press the Eagles to make a move more quickly than if he simply reported to camp, but I don’t think the team is overly reluctant about giving him a huge contract. There are questions about his size, his all-around receiver skills and maturity but his big-play ability and speed are huge parts of the Eagles offense and special teams. The team knows what he wants, his value and that his contract will expire at the end of the season. The front office is simply biding their time as they sort out other more pressing issues.

Jackson deserves the money, but I don’t believe holding out is the way to get it.

Why not (and who saw this coming four years ago) follow the path of Mike Vick? Vick is going to make a cool $16 million this season due to the franchise tag he signed earlier this summer—certainly a much easier number to swallow than Jackson’s ‘pennies’—and is also looking for a long-term deal in the near future. Instead of making a spectacle of the situation Vick is at Lehigh tuning up for the season and saying all the right things.

In an already shortened training camp every day of practice is essential to getting in-tune with all the other players. If Jackson is so confident that he deserves the big money then he should show up to camp, do the work needed to make this team better and put up the numbers during the season. Then, even if the Eagles balk at his contract demands (I sure hope not) other teams will be waiting in line to give him the money he desperately desires in the open market. He may not get the money he wants this year but a holdout could cause a drop in production from a lack of preparation which could wind up costing him more money in the long run.

I don’t know what the rest of fans think but that seems the logical choice, if the Eagles want to be the best team possible this year. For the record, Desean could show up by Thursday and all of this holdout talk could become a moot point. Yet in the end, the man wants his money, simple as that and he’s going to try and get it anyway possible.

It’s unfortunate that now when a few additions could make the Birds a legitimate Super Bowl contender the last thing they need is an unnecessary holdout from one of their best players.

Nothing more to say on this…Our F.O. will continue this merry go round with our playmakers and wait for a disgruntled player to act a fool without them ever coming forward and taking care of the problem before it starts getting out of hand. Ridiculous is all I have to say on this matter; nothing more.

A holdout is dumb at this point. The CBA was just agreed upon. It’s not like he’s been negotiating with the Eagles for a new contract for the past 5 months. I think we all agree he deserves to be paid higher but I just think a holdout in this point in time just doesn’t make sense given the fact no one has been negotiating before yesterday.

All this talk of holdout – how much camp has happened already? Is this a bizarre year where there were no rookie camps/otas? Are there any new coaches to integrate into new systems? Just curious… and is Desean Jackson an elite player at a position that isn’t effected by any of the new coaches? Is his QB the same as last year? So wouldn’t that mean that Desean has only the slightest reason to be in camp in the next few days anyway? Let’s be real folks. This is SO SMALL POTATOS. He’s so low on the priorieties for reps in camp it’s not even funny.

We don’t know what has happened behind closed doors regarding this issue. We are not in the loop.

However, if want a raise, I go in and ask for one but still continue to work. Can you imagine if you told your boss you were staying home until you got a raise? Please. “Just stay home and I’ll mail you your last check” is what they would say.

Not to mention that league rules would not allow them to give him a raise in previous years due to rookie contracts.

The Eagles Fired TO even when they did not have the depth and youth that they now have.

Holding out does not work with Andy Reid and Banner.

Get your skinny, underweight butt into camp and honor the contract you signed.

Then sign with a warm weather team or a dome team where you would be a reboot of the greatest show on turf. And close to unstoppable.

But you disappear in too many divisional games and get completely shut down by physical cornerbacks. The Eagles have a long ball threat in Maclin and have brought in more speed (kid from WVA). They have toughness in Avant and Size with Riley Cooper.

They have game breakers in Vick and McCoy and drafted another RB from Pitt that’s supposed to be good.

It would be nice to have Jackson, but the Eagles don’t need an Undersized won’t go over the middle, alligator arm speedster.

You don’t see the Steelers and Packers playing with pee wee players. Devin Hester with all his kick returns and speed has not bought a championship to chicago.

A solid WR corps is better that one trick pony guy.

He deserves a raise and only the Eagles know why they have not given it to him. But in the past, the Eagles jump at locking down new young talent before they become too expensive. They have avoided this with Desean Jackson. I am willing to bet the yellow teeth of Joe Banner that there is something wrong with this kid.

Paulman’s sources have informed me that the Carolina Panthers are willing to make Desean Jackson the richest WR in NFL history. Desean would like to stay in Philadelphia but the Eagles instead want to sign Braylon Edwards to a 6 year $80 million dollar contract.

He can pout, & hold out all he wants, it ain’t happening. If he doesn’t report by a certain date, he doesn’t get paid at all. BTW, if he’s dreaming of $20M guaranteed, he can keep on dreaming. He ain’t worth it & the Eagles cannot give that to him, with all the holes they have. Awww, too bad. Get in camp diva.

Get hurt in camp? Are you kidding? Training camp is going to be powder-puff derby compared to previous CBA varieties. Though, he might trip over his own feet. He needs to get his fanny in there. Rosenhaus is an idiot who will get his money regardless of what the player loses in fines, etc.

Get this deal done asap and lets get going!!!!! trade Kolb for DRC and a 6th pick IDC….. Make the deal and lets get PROVEN guys off of FA to help us win!!!!! Getting Ray Edwards isnt going to get us over the hump….. He produces the same numbers that Jaqua parker produces with about 8 sacks per season…… We need Jason babin who produced at a high level at Tenn!!!!

He can only hold out until Aug. 9th If he isn’t in camp by then he loses a year of pension credit, which means he does not get credit for the year as it accrues to free agency. For those of you who do not understand that, it means he will be in camp, or the Eagles will control his rights PAST his current deal, meaning he will be a restricted FA next year. He knows the plays, he does not need to be in camp. This is not a stunt or anything silly like that, it is just him protecting himself until his new deal can get worked out. This is a non-issue, they have 6 months of negotiations and paperwork to get through, they can’t do it all in 4 days. I do not know why people care if he gets a huge contract or not. Its not your money, and he isn’t giving you any of his. Brady played into the last year of his deal, Manning’s contract isn’t done, Jackson will be just fine. Pay the man! What for? He’ll play anyway, he doesn’t care about you. Before he got drafted by the Eagles he probably couldn’t find Philadelphia on a map. As long as he makes touchdowns I could not care less if they pay him in pesos.

If you read this website you would think the perrenial pro-bowler sucks. Amazing. What do you want? Who posted “he doesnt go over the middle”?. What do you want from him he is 150 pounds. Her is a 50-60 catch 1200 yard and 10-12 td a year guy. With 8 tds over 60 yards. Then he can drop back for punt returns. What do you want from him?

Anderson its all about chemistry……. we need the man to show up after a long ass drought without football…… Yes I dont care what he makes but look at all these signings going on with guys who aren’t even on d-jax’s stats…… Holmes is a great receiver but after an hip injury with S. Rice he gets 18 mill guaranteed…… If the guy makes the probowl his past two seasons and getting special teams money than something has to get done……. If you were working harder than the other man at your job but he’s getting paid more than you I’m sure you’ll be pretty pissed right or wrong?????

He isn’t annoyed. He knows a new deal is coming, this has nothing to do with the stupid contemporary notion of “respect” or any of that other trash. He’s protecting himself. Rosenhaus has 60 players who are unsigned, he cannot negotiate with everybody in 72 hours. Do you think he is sitting in a dark room thinking angry thoughts? He isn’t. He knows full well he could not, BY RULE, get a new deal last year. It had nothing to do with him or the Eagles, it was due to the language and limits of the CBA. Does anybody think he has forgotten how to run fast? I doubt it. Think Vick isn’t going to throw him the ball because he was late getting to camp? Not likely. It has nothing to do with chemistry, lots of guys play with deals they do not like. It happens all of the time, the do what he will do, like a good little employee, he will come to work, and collect his check. This is a non-issue, but people are not smart enough to see the it.

You know…I agree with the way GCobb phrased it last year. I wouldn’t bust a grape for this organization until they pony up the money owed. Now is the best time to hold out. All of the FOs around the league are the most optimistic they will be for the entire year and the sheer flood of trade calls that will come in for this disgruntled player will eventually force the Eagles FO to make a move in one direction or the other. DJack is really too much of an injury liability to play underpaid for another year. Basically the Eagles want to wait until the man is majorly injured so that they don’t have to pay him while he’s ALREADY EARNED ATLEAST $20M+ for the team. If they don’t want to pay him trade him…30 other teams will pay him like a top 3 WR without breaking a sweat.

I understand Silva but the players got to see first hand how these owners are during this whole lockout ordeal…… Yes its business but the whole deal thing was about paying rookies crazy money without NFL experience…… the Panthers addressed there issues quickly by signing guys who are proven in the NFL…… We’ll see how everything unfolds during the KOLB trade with money being free and perhaps this weekend Djax could be dealt……. these owners and the players perhaps have a total different relationship towards each other for now on!!!! Lurie and the Eagles have plenty of money to pay a proven man who sells jersey’s and made historical plays that Philly fans have never seen before ever!!!

With the money Peyton Manning is getting, they will not be able to pay anybody else anything. Please recall this is the team that traded Marshall Faulk so they could draft a less expensive option. have you lost your mind? Jackson is not getting traded anywhere. Why in the world would the Eagles trade him anyplace? They have him under contract for this year at $500,000. Every team in the league goes through this with a player or two every single year. Logan Mankins swore up and down, he would never ever play for the Pats again. Come week 10 of the season, guess what he did? Go back to work. The fact that Jackson has made the team money means squat. Nobody in the NFL pays for what you DID. They pay you based upon what you are expected to achieve. Again, you fail to comprehend the basic tenets of running a business. There are no “make-up” payments in the NFL. Jackson did not get drafted in the 1st round, and that money is gone, the ship sailed, the train has left the station. Wave bye-bye to that cash, its gone. How much money the franchise makes or does not make has absolutely nothing to do with what Jackson gets paid. Keep in mind much of that money gets shared throughout the league, with teams like Kansas City. It does not all go to the individual teams, they have a revenue sharing agreement. Payment to players is governed with respect to the salary cap, as negotiated by the NFL and NFLPA. So many commenters are so obviously employees that have never been responsible for anything more than showing up to work and collecting a paycheck. Its always about the downtrodden employee who is being taken advantage of by evil managment. Never mind the fact that without leaders and managers and supervisors, it would be disorganized chaos where nothing gets accomplished. The relationship between the players and owners will never, ever be anything other than what it has always been, and remains up to and including now. Owners own, they are the bosses, and players play, and collect a paycheck. Again, I repeat, this is not a big deal, he is going to get a new contract, which he will not share with any of the people who scream “Pay the man!” It is not a time to panic or lose your small little minds about this. If he does not appear by Aug. 9th, then it is a different story, but that is not going to happen, because at that point the consequences for not showing up will be too much for him. And he will probably have a new deal by then anyway.

2 Deals announced today on COmparable WR’s in Age though D-Jax has been more consistent and healthier than the other 2

#1) Santonio Holmes — 5 Year $50 MIllion with $24 Million in Guaranteed $$
#2) Sydney Rice — 5 Year $48 MIllion with $18 Million in Gauranteed $$

Drew Rosenhaus and D-Jax I suspect will ask for more than these 2 Players sincw he’s made 2 Pro-Bowls and also Doubles up as very dangerous Punter
It will probably take a $55 Million Deal with about $20 MIllion of it guaranteed $$ to satisfy their Demand…

Paul i already said that earlier on a post… Holmes set the market, now teams will base what they give off of his deal… I also mentioned that desean deserves a deal similar if not better than Holmes… hes the most dynamic player in the NFL… If the eagles dont pay him some other team will and they ll probably come out of our division the skins or cowboys or giants, is that what any of us would want? We have no corner that is on this roster that can cover that man, period. So lets hope they can get a deal done with him, also so it wont be so messy and this offense cant afford to have him hold out we need him… we have no depth behind him and maclin… Im not trying to have Avant go out there as the 2nd starting wr week 1… so they need to get a deal done…

Songs, I am done discussing it, you clearly fail to understand the situation, so I am done wasting time on those who cannot handle simple reading comprehension. He could not get a new deal from the Eagles last year. The uncapped year had new rules regarding the re-working of players under contract with a team. He could not recieve more than a 30% pay raise, which was not enough money to make it worthwhile. It was a RULE, as in could not be worked around in any sensible way. He will get a new contract, he was not the only player caught up in the rules last season. He deserves a new contract, and you have not heard me suggest anything otherwise. A new deal will get done, and he will be happy with it. He could not have gotten it done prior to this year in any sane way, regardless of what owner or front office he played for. The Eagles understand what he means to them, i say again, it is a non-issue. He is just protecting himself from injury by staying home, which is prudent in his situation. The teams have only had 3 days to begin working on new deals with players, it takes time to get everything done.

Haynesworth,Bush,Ochocinco,TO,Farve,Plexico are all players of the past with their best days way behind them.. Eagles are doping the smart thing and continuing to build for the future and spend their resources on players who will contribute and be around for the next 3-4-5 Seasons, not these rebt a player for a year…
