Eagles Are Eager To Get Jackson, Maclin And Smith On The Field

Despite Michael Vick’s impressive performance in the first drive of last night’s game, the Eagles are eager about getting the probable starters at their wide receiver positions out there on the field.

Last night Jason Avant and Riley Cooper started and played well, but they’re not likely to be starting any games during the season.

The probable starter at flanker, DeSean Jackson, who was on the team’s sidelines last night, is expected to practice on Saturday. The possible starter on the other side, Jeremy Maclin went to St. Louis a few days ago to undergo more tests to find out what illness he’s facing.

The recently-signed Steve Smith, who was also on the Eagles sidelines last night, is in the midst of rehabilitating his knee, which underwent microfracture surgery this past December.

Jackson played catch with Vick the last couple of days and will be worked into the lineup starting tomorrow morning. He held out to get a new contract and it hasn’t been worked out just yet, but the sides are talking.

As for Maclin, the saga of this mystery illness continues. Despite being in the dark concerning the sickness, his coaches and teammates are talking positive but they still can’t explain why because they don’t know the illness he’s battling.

“I think he’s going to be ready,” Reid said. “I guess I’m optimistic. I’m waiting to hear the results, but I’m optimistic.”

Michael Vick expressed a similar positive concern.

“We’re just going to put Jeremy’s situation in the hands of God and it’ll be taken care of. We’ll see what happens and how it goes. We’re pulling for him. We’re optimistic that he’s going to get back at some point in time and we’ll accept him with open arms. We’ll continue to try and build this offense so when he comes back he can fit right in.”

Reid talked about the reason Maclin is having the testing done back in St. Louis.

“He has to have some tests done,” Reid said. “His (surrogate) father is a doctor, so that is actually a comforting feeling. He has someone there that he is very close to, and his dad has a good pulse on things, which we encourage, so that’s where he had some of the tests done.”

Vick responded to a question about when he expected Maclin back in action.

“I don’t know. I can’t answer that question. I don’t know the situation or what is exactly causing the sickness. So I think you’ll have to talk to our team doctors about that.”

As for the recently signed former New York Giants receiver, Reid described his surgery, the condition of his knee and their plan to get him back on the field.

“He had a small microfracture, but all of his ligaments and cartilage was intact,” Reid said. “His knee is very stable, and he’s had no swelling in his knee throughout the whole process. He’s been running, and he starting running routes this past week.

“We’re just going to bring him back slowly and see what he can do. We’ll get him in a formal rehab with [trainer] Rick [Burkholder] and see exactly where he’s at. It could be three weeks, I don’t know. I have to see how he does here. We know he’s a fine football player, and we just need to get his leg where it needs to be.”

Vick is eager to get him in the lineup because he knows it will mean another weapon which the opposing defense will have to game plan against.

“Having Steve is going to be a great addition”, Vick said after the game. “In conjunction with the other guys we have I think he’ll be able to make great contributions to our offense and whatever package that he’s in. I just think that he poses another threat. So as many weapons as we get, we’ll use. Our plan is to use him.”

Eagles Rushed the ball 32 times for a total of 88 Yards.. (2.8 Average)
Sorry if I am not making the connection of solid OL play last night with an average of this… ..

Game was over 15 hours ago, time to take the Eagle Sun-Glasses off and look at the teams performance for I saw some good things, but there is a lot of work to do and there always is this early in Camp.. But by most peoples comments, It seems the Eagles played a great game and were hitting on all cylandirs and were dominant which is not the game that I saw..The Eagles Defense was dominating ni the 1st Quarter and the Ravens didn’t know what him them.. but man 2 Red-Zone trips resulting in shirt Field Goals just kills me.. (though its good practice for the Rookie Kicker) but would be even better practice for the Offense to score TD’s when getting to the Red-Zone which is waht they will need to get to the next level..

Paulman, remind me what Herman Edwards said… is it “You play to score more points than any other team in the league”? Was that it?

Interesting – from a coachin’ perspective cared about two things first scrimmage:

1) Line play (O and D)
2) Exchange between Center/QB and QB/RB

everything else is gravy

and told players they had from the end of the game until the start of the next practice to ‘enjoy’ –

But you are right in one respect – the most important thing to come out of the scrimmage is what areas you need to focus your next weeks practice – (and hope no one hurt –

so how about that – play Ried for a day – what should the Eagles work on for next weeks pre-season game

Biggest positive I take from last night’s game is that no major injuries occured
and you have to be pumped how the DL and Safeties played as well as the Rookie Kicker/Punter

The only thing that bothers me about last nights game is that paulman is still on the team, can we please trade him back to Carolina. If you can’t watch last nights game and be excited you don’t know what your looking at, of course they were’nt firing on all cylinders. They been in camp for two weeks with hardly any hitting at all. Vick went right down the field and we did’nt have 3 pro bowl level rec. on the field. The defense got to the qb with a four man rush, which we have’nt done it 15 years. How about how well the team is coached, hardly no mistakes in a game after two weeks of practice. I’ll say it again, the eagles will be down right scary this year and if you can’t see that your blind.

Paulman- you have been attacked by your detractors. If you had said thew Eagles look like a super bowl team after one offensive series your comment would have been accepted.

This is going to be a scary scary crew at wr. If smith is healthy you have 3 #1 recievers on one team. The birds have loaded up. They have built there team obviously to contend and win a title, but also to match well against the packers. Look at the overall team that the eagles have built, its very similar to that of the packers. Of course the packs have the edge being that there the defending champs but man the eagles are in a close second. Im not eve taking alot from a preseason game besides that they looked fast and ferocious on defense, and the Offense was very sharp with the first unit without maclin, jackson, smith all on the field…

Dont judge Casey Matthews from just like one series of defense… i really think they should have let him play longer, but i think they are really high on him… On some plays i saw the ravens bringing to guys to come block him, with that there isnt much he can do, that means someone can run free and make the play… but he did do a great job of getting everyone in place on Defense and getting the calls out… he ll be just fine…

Random question. Does anybody know how well regarded the Eagles training staff is around the league? Is there any possibility that they may do something better or different than the Giants that makes the team think they can get him back on the field earlier than what the Giants expected?

paulman
paulman
August 12, 2011 9:45 pm

Eagles Training Staff is highly regarded as far as I have heard and read about AS.. I think the Giants orginally low-balled Smith with a deal and were probably hoping with the Injury and surgery he had, that most teams would be scared off.. I believe once he got a decent offer from the Eagles, he was ready to bolt asap for the Giants are known to play hard ball (worse than the Eagles I may add) when it comes to contract Negiotiations.. Go check with DE Osi, & RB Bradshaw and former TE K Boss…

Easy JH, 3 #1 WR’s may be a stretch.. Probably more like 3 #2 WR’s.. who would all have their role/skill set to play, but none are a True #1 WR where they can do it all.. SIze,Strength,Speed, Blocking, Red-Zone threat would make up a #1 WR like a C Johnson,A Johnson, or a B Marshall.. . not the Eagles Corps

Checking on the 5 GAmes (10 teams playing tonight) that are still in progress and I see that 6 of them have already outscored the Eagles from last nights performance.. 3 Games are in the 4th Quarter and 2 games are still in the 3rd so now we can another 1/2 Dozen teams for the SUper Bowl.. Remember these teams are all playing back-ups, have had the same amount of practice and some of them have completely new Coaching staffs and Systems…

Paul there all # 1 reciever. They can do it all, they may not be as tall as the recievers you mentioned but they are all potential # 1s if they were on other teams…Smith was the #1 reciever on the giants, jackson # 1 for us, and maclin is a all around reciever and would be a #1 anywhere else. Stop trying to shut every good thing mentioned about the eagles down paul… goodness…

Anderson Silva, they have one of the best training staffs in the league, the giants tried to get the price lowered for Smiths servicesand they were caught with egg on there face… smh… i know smith will be motivated to play this year… im trying to think did he have the same injury as wes welker? I think wes injury was worst too, but everyone heals differently… Lets hope this guy is healthy because he will be a huge addition, the guy runs great routes and catches everything… they called him in ny “3rd and Smith”… hes money…

I disagreee with you 100% JH,
Most other teams WR’s are asked tro block a lot more than the Eagles, but since the Eagles don’t run the ball enought, it is not stressed much the WR Corp but if you want to say the 40-60 Receptions is comparable to some the WR’s I listed, then you are hooked on the EAgles Koo-Aid.. and especially for how often the EAgles throw the ball.. D-Jax had 45-50 Catches (3 per game) and is ineffective once in the Red-Zone due to to his small frame.. Maclin was the closest WR on the Eagles as a true #1 but with his health issues, who knows how he bounces back health and strength wise .. S SMith is a good versatile slot WR who is a #2 WR on 90 % of the Teams in the NFL and again due to his size and not having the deep speed to play the outside
and I am not down on the EAgles at all for this is the most talented Roster in my almost 40 years as being a fan, but there are lots of good players and teams in teh NFL and I hate who EAgle Fans and media continually over-hype everything and every player… I know the City and its fans are dying for a Super Bowl and are long overdue for a Champiopn..but you have to keep things, players, games and perfomances in perspective.. It’s a long Season and no Championships have been won before in Summer CA
Oh and H Nicks is the #1 WR on the Giants by the way…

BigE – not bad points, but I firmly believe that what actually occurs in the American workforce is a lot of down time on the job. I think that’s natural, necessary, and aboslutely harmless. It should be that way. Humans function best and most naturally in that sense. It’s fact. Think of sleep v. awake, but on the micro rather than macro sense. We’re programed to take breaks. And frequent short breaks can be the most functional for some poeple depending on the job. OR – as is the case with me, your job may require you to be on hold for long periods of time – hence, I click over to this site.

Paul, your missing one fact. Those teams dont have more than 1 premier wr. The dolphins, texans, cardinals, outside of there superstar reciever they have no other premier wrs. The eagles have 3. Smith led the giants in recieving a tds the year he went to the probowl… macling had great numbers last yr and is poised for a great yr this yr if he can get healthy… and desean command on the field is self explanatory, he commands a double even a triple team at times. People dont realize that fact. So all the other stats dont matter what matters is what we see on that field… And ive been watching football and playing football all my life (a wr myself) so i know what its all about…

Paul iam a realist, if its something about this team i dont like then i will call them out about it. I have some concerns but there not glaring like they were in previous years. And when Smith was there nicks was not there #1 reciever, smith was. Actually Nicks has only been in the league for 2 maybe 3 years, both he and manningham along with manning have been criticized over not having the prpoer chemistry on the field, smith was always mannings guy, esp after burress got arrested… So yes in my opinion the eagles currently have 3 #1 wrs on theresquad this year only if smith is healthy…

we got too many recievers jackson smith maclin avant cooper.. i was hoping cooper would move up the depth chart now there is noway unless maclin and smith are out awhile and cooper shines tremendously in their roles.. cooper is 6’4 225 and runs 4.5 flat that very fast for a big solid reciever and that play last night was beautiful, the move he put on carr and then beat the best saftey in the league ed reed over the top..

I disagree JH
Packers are a team with a better WR Corps, Take a look this year at teams like Seahawks, Chiefs,Falcons , Colts (when healthy), Chargers, Saints,COwboys,etc,etc.. There a lots of good WR Corps around the NFL and I think the Eagles group is good, but they are not the best

Paulman ..I’ll say this and say it only once.

If Reid would have addressed the corner position, no one on here would be talking about how good green bays receivers are.

Once they got past us, getting to the Superbowl was quite easy.

Last season was up fro grabs and that’s the real reason no one is really heralding Green Bay with fan fare.

Falcons were frauds, Chicago is Chicago, Seattle were just happy to get in, Tampa Bay was too young and still growing…

So, again …Green Bay won..But please stop touting their recievers as the best since sliced bread…

If we had a corner instead of the old stubborn Reid ignoring key positions, that could have very well been us hoisting the Lombardi last year.

Don’t forget “The Sky pointer” missed two simple field goals in a game we lost by 2 field goals…and we still came away one play from winning.

In my opinion paul as an overall group the eagles rank up there in the top 2 or 3. Since they drafted maclin and jackson and I’m not the only one that says that either I hear that too from other fans of other teams… packers eagles colts, this year we may in fact be #1 with the addition of steve smith…

How can they be positive on Maclin when
1. They don’t know what is wrong with him
2. He looks horrible and will take a lot of time getting weight back on and getting into FB shape if they ever find what is ailing him
3. With the great hospitals and doctors we have in the Phila area they can’t get a diagnosis and he has to go to St Louis

paulman

To RCP1936

#1) They are running more tests to determine what’s wrong
#2) He has lost 15 lbs and will not be ready to play Football before Nov,if at all,
#3) Maclin’s from St Lous and has his own family physicians based there who have been working with him since he first got “Mono” back in the Spring

Eagles are moving forward which is all they can do at this point.. It’s a shame but Maclins Health Condition is the #1 Priority, and I am no Doctor, but I would be very surprised to see him back on the football field this year..Who knows his family’s health history and whether conditions like Sickle-Cell ,Chrone’s, Meningitis or any of the other diseases that are hard to identify are in play.. I am sure he is getting all the tests he can and is getting the best care possible and depending what thy find, then we will hear something, but it may take a while..
