It’s cutdown time in the NFL. The Eagles will have to reduce their roster by 27 players and go from a roster of 80 to a roster of 53.
They have a number of veterans on the defensive side of the ball, who are in jeopardy of being released. These guys have been with the team and have been key contributors but right now their chances of hanging on don’t look good.
There was a report that the Eagles had been receiving offers for nickel back Joselio Hanson, but they obviously haven’t been able to deal him just yet. I’m confident that they’ll be able to trade him for a sixth or seventh round pick. Hanson does a good job at the Eagles nickel back spot, but he’s slated to make over $2 million dollars this season which is too much for a fourth, or fifth cornerback on a team with three Pro Bowl cornerbacks and two of them are amongst the highest paid at the position in the league.
If for some reason, they’re not able to find a trade partner for the cornerback, Hanson will be released. The Birds would like to get something in return for Hanson, but it’s not a guarantee that they will.
Another veteran who is likely to be released is defensive end Juqua Parker. Parker has averaged 7 to 8 sacks in the last few years, but each year he seems to wear down as the season goes along. His cap number is over $4 million dollars and he’s been hurt most of the camp. If the Birds let him go, it would free up that money, so that they could sign star wide receiver DeSean Jackson.
Parker is amazingly strong for his size, but he’s always battling offensive tackles who outweigh him by 40 to 70 pounds. His strength, quickness and tenacity allow him to compete with the bigger players, but the Eagles are probably going to go with the younger defensive ends, Daniel Te’o Nesheim and Phillip Hunt, this time around. I’m sure that Parker will playing somewhere in the league because
Trevor Laws was in there battling against the Jets last night. His performance was okay but not exceptional. Laws has said his hip flexor hasn’t fully recovered, but he knew he had to play last night to show new defensive line coach Jim Washburn that he wants to be here.
There’s a good chance he will be released today or tomorrow. Jim Washburn who is the new defensive line coach hasn’t seen Laws do much but he has been impressed by the intensity of defensive tackle Derrick Landri.
Washburn likes his players to play like their hair is on fire and Landri does that. If it’s between Laws and Landri I would put my money on Landri. He has a lower salary cap number as well.
No real surprise G, and many have called for this really since mid-camp..
I don’t think a team will trade for Hanson and assume his big contract when they could wait it out and pick-up him up almost zipper on a league minimum deal or much lower Contract than he presently has with the Eagles..
Parker and Law’s inactivity due to injuries has been discussed all camp season and with the upside and energy and consistency that Landri,Hargrove and Hunt bring on every snap and practice, I see it very difficult not to keep these guys over the aging Parker and the very inconsistent Laws..
I think Jamall Jackson may also be a potential cut to save more $$ on the Sallary Cap.. It really depends in Coach Mudd likes McGlynn enough to make the squad and be a back-up Center/Guard. If McGlynn makes the cut, then J Jackson is a goner, If McGlynn is not in Mudd’s plans, then JJ Makes it and it will be his final Season with the Eagles
I hope the Eagles keep 3 TE’s and keep Donald Lee for it would be a mistatke to only go with 2 TE’s and Lee is a very underrated player
5 or 6 WR’s .. HIggins is a goner has been very disappointing and if the Eagles keep 6 WR, they also need to make sure this 6th WR can contribute on Special team as a Return Guy.. I like S Moss over C Hall,HArper and others..Now if they go with 3 TE’s and only 5 WR, than that Return guy needs to be DIon Lewis which is would I would do as Coach..
Offense – 25 Players
QB-3 RB-3 FB-1 TE-3 WR-5 OL-10
Defense – 25 Players
DL – 10 (5 DE & 5 DT)
LB – 6
CB – 5
Safety – 4
Special Teamers (3)
It’s time to move on from all this dead wood. Hanson, Parker and Laws have had their chance to prove they can play and have failed miserably. Hanson had one good 8 game stretch and go rewarded financially. He was horrendous the last two yrs. Parker is Mr. September. You know what you’re going to get (or more importantly what you’re not going to get) and it’s time to see if Graham, Hunt and Teo’ Neshiem can play. Laws couldn’t start over Broderick Bunkley so that’s all you need to know about his sorry career. He’s was an absolute bust for where he was drafted.
As for Jamal Jackson, why is everyone so concerned with a guy who is in the bottom 1/3 of centers in the league? He was undrafted for a reason! Granted, he was a step up from Hank Fraley, but then again, so is my mom.
It’s time to move on from all these guys clogging up playing time for younger guys with potential. Maybe they can play and maybe they can’t….but they’re cheaper and really can’t be any worse.
Parker can go. I like him, but he’s older, getting slower and becomes ineffective down the stretch.
For this defense, I would trade Antonio Dixon and keep Laws. Dixon doesn’t have the speed they want and would do better as a run stuffer somewhere else. Laws showed last year he can get after it and did some good things last night.
As for Hansen, the question becomes can Marsh, Lindley or Hughes be better than Hansen next year. Hansen is as good as he’s going to get and if the upside of the other corners is higher, trade him for what you can get and save the money to sign Jackson.
I like Parker but I love Hunt, I’d rather see what Hunt can bring to the table because I already seen what Parker is about and he tails off after week 8.
Dixon over Laws, that’s not even a question.
Hanson is as good as gone. Both Marsh and Lindley are locks and they are high on Hughes and his potential.
I’m not 100% sure Lindley is a lock to be honest, but who the heck knows. We’ll see by the time our labor day saturday hangovers subside…
You can put Jamal Jackson, on that list, too. There will be no surprises for me. They all need to go. Complete the overhauling process, of the lineup. See ya, wouldn’t want to be ya!
BTW, the LB’s, Safeties & right side of the O-line is a joke & a horrifying disaster! No Super Bowl, this year! Too many ifs, ands, buts, question marks & changes that are on this roster. In football, you need chemistry, trust & cohesion. I didn’t see a grain of sand of that, to make me get all geeked & chunked up for this season. If anyone thinks we can win a SB, with this squad, I have some land, in the tar pits, for you to buy.
GOOD LUCK VICK! GO BIRDS!
DD – you sound very foolish my friend. First of all, since you are sure of what will happen with the cuts, wouldn’t you be surprised if they did keep laws, jackson, hanson or parker!?ha And knowing that the Packers had so many injuries last year, and won the superbowl, isn’t your ‘you need chemistry, trust and cohesion’ argument bunk!? You don’t need those things to win the superbowl, you need wins.
NO, it isn’t bunk, genius! Although the Pack had many injuries, the team they won with, was there all season. Our squad is almost a full make over, with no time or experience to gel. They also had a top QB, good WR’s & solid O-line, last year & a dominant & deep DF. The only dominant thing on this team is the ifs, ands, buts, & question marks. Your argument is idiotic & holds as much water as a cheese grater! Get your head out of Reids Colon, & stop criticising & arguing with everyone who you disagree with. I love the Birds & want to win, but I refuse to live in your La La land of confusion & delusion! Get a life, blog Nazi!!!
Wait, DD, your arugment was that the packers had a whole season together and this team doesn’t? You do realize that at the end of this season (come playoff time) that this team will have had a whole season? And they key injuries during the season too, not just before. Ha. I can see why you don’t want to argue – because you’re terrible at it!
Look, I’m not saying the Eagles will win the superbowl or that the OL will play great early. But I am saying that your negativity (and yes it isn’t reality you dope – the Eagles have yet to make 1 bad play or lose 1 game) is WAY WAY WAY over the top.
Let’s leave it at this, you have your opinion & I have mine! We will see who’s the dope! I hope I am, because that means we win! But i’m very confidant, that i’m not, & i’m rarely wrong. I’m far from perfect, but rarely wrong. Disagree if you want, that’s your right. But I could give a $#!T less! Stop criticising & arguing with everybody, that you don’t agree with! That you don’t have a right to do!!!
OK DD, let’s hope the Eagles win so we are both happy. Thanks for telling me about my rights, sometimes the 1rst ammendment confuses me (sarcasm).
If we cut parker then these guys don’t know what they’re doing because on paper with all of the one year signings and talent we brought in, they thought “hey this is the year baby” and now after seeing the mediocrity kicking game, the abysmal players we drafted they’re going to cut one of our better DE’s which will prove that that they’re not thinking this is our year anymore. I can’t count the number of times I remember Parker being there and making plays. I can’t say that for laws. I’m completely baffled by this FO and AR
